OPINION Drumheller destination marketing hires executive director Michael James | inSide Drumheller

After months of work by tourism stakeholders in Drumheller, a new destination marketing organization (DMO) for the town may be ready in the near future. A new name has been chosen for the group; Travel Drumheller. Upon formalizing the group, they will be eligible for funding from Travel Alberta. “We’re pretty close to moving forward on the Travel Drumheller Marketing Association. We’ve come up with a tentative structure,” said Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services with the Town of Drumheller. To become fully operational, the group has recruited an executive director to take the helm. “This is a critical piece for the organization to move forward. It will put us in a good position to take advantage of more opportunities in tourism in the future. He has an incredible amount of en-

thusiasm and experience in business and not-forprofits. We had a good level of comfort with his application and the ideas he brought to the table,” said Salvatore.

Christ Curtis... New executive director of Travel Drumheller

Chris Curtis, the new executive director, feels he can bring another perspective to the marketing efforts of Drumheller. “I was really excited. I’ve been to Drumheller twice and the second time I was really overwhelmed by the scenery. It’s a beautiful and unique place,” said Curtis. “I think I can bring a unique perspective.

I’ve travelled all over the world and worked in 45 different countries. Quite often, if you live close to something, you don’t see the beauty that other people, like a tourist, might see.” Curtis is preparing to make the move from Halifax. Upon arriving, he will start by engaging tourism sector businesses and see how best to move forward from there. “I’ve done a lot of work helping get into the tourism business as entrepreneurs,” said Curtis. “The best thing to do is to talk to people in the community and find, from those discussions, what needs to happen. I have some ideas, but it needs to be driven by the community and it’s my job to see that it happens.” Early estimates had the organization up and running this summer. The timeline has been pushed back slightly and the organization will move ahead once Curtis arrives in Drumheller.

Flooded Nature Trail sections closed indefinitely Michael James | inSide Drumheller

One of Drumheller’s most beloved features will remain largely closed for the immediate future. Sections of the Drumheller Nature Trail that were ooded two weeks ago will remain closed until Town of Drumheller crews are able to clean up the mud and debris that has inundated the trails. Stretches of the trail next to the river were blocked prior to the ood reaching its peak. Since the ood, safety concerns are still present, including slippery conditions and possible erosion. “Obviously there is a concern. If our sta have ribboned it o, there’s a reason for that,â€? said Allan Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Drumheller. “There’s probably going to be more sinkholes or sloughing of the banks. We expect more issues to show up.â€? The wait for the trails to fully reopen may be longer than residents had hoped. “We have ten pages of things to get to after the ood. The trails are a lower priority than ďŹ xing sink holes on the street for example,â€? said Kendrick. However, town crews will be approaching the trail clean-up intermittently over the summer. “We had a couple of the guys on the trails this morning (Wednesday, July 10). The mud is

We tried to clear a couple spots, around the train bridge and two or three other places, but I think it’s going to be an intermittent approach over the next few days if we get some hot, dry weather,â€? said Kendrick. “Some areas have eight inches and others have two. It’s something we’d like to get to, but we’re limited by the equipment we can get in there.â€? Since the ood, Town crews have been tackling projects that were placed on hold during the ood, such as cast iron water main replacement, street improvements, and hydrant ushing. Drumheller is about to yee-haw for the latest musical to hit the stage at Kaleidoscope Theatre. Over the past month, the cast and crew of Kaleidoscope Theatre’s latest production have been hard at work rehearsing, building sets, and singing and dancing up a storm for Oklahoma!, which premiers on Wednesday, July 17. With less than a week before opening night, the cast and crew are putting the ďŹ nishing touches on the play and are doing the ďŹ nal dress rehearsals. Sitting in the director’s chair is theatre veteran Becky Neuman. Free child development advice available at Dino Days Submitted | inSide Drumheller

Parents with questions or concerns about their children’s development can get answers and advice later this month during a free Alberta Health Services (AHS) community event. Oered by Children’s Rehabilitation Services, Dino Days provides parents an opportunity to connect with a variety of health professionals, including occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, and social workers. Dino Days will also show parents how they can promote development during their everyday routines. Dino Days will be held in Drumheller July 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Rotary Spray Park. A second Dino Days will be held in Drumheller next month and similar events are planned for Hanna and Three Hills over the summer. Initiated in 2010 as a prevention-focused initiative, Dino Days oers engaging activities for children by using developing skills in a series of activities. The activities are related to dinosaurs as much as possible, which adds an element of fun to the day. An obstacle course incorporates activities from all the disciplines involved in Children’s Rehabilitation Services, including verbal sequencing, listening and attention skills, motion and movement, and ďŹ ne motor skills. As children make their way through the obstacle course, health professionals observe their abilities and oer tips and suggestions, when requested, to parents, who must be present. More than 200 participants have taken part in Dino Days since 2010.

Children’s Rehabilitation Services provide initial assessments, treatments, recommendations and referrals to community services for children up to 16 years of age. Dino Days is a chance for parents to learn more about childhood development and have fun. Dino Day is Wednesday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Motorcycle Madness is back. The annual event that celebrates the motorcycle and the open road has been a mainstay in the valley for about a decade. Organizer Terry Kuhl says the event has been a good chance for local riders to get together and head out. They are joined by riders often

from Brooks, Strathmore, Calgary, and even Saskatchewan for the day’s festivities. While the main event is this Saturday, July 13, many get ready for the weekend with a Friday night steak run. Those wanting to participate will muster at Yavis Family Restaurant at 5 p.m. before they head out. The real madness begins on Saturday. Kuhl explains they are changing up the schedule a little bit this year. In previous years, the bikes would hit the road on a run before they headed downtown for the show and shine. This time they will be shining extra early. Head to downtown Drumheller Saturday morning for breakfast. Proceeds from the pancakes will go to the Drumheller and Dis-

trict Humane Society. After eating, stick around for the bikes. The streets will be lined with some of the nicest rides from the valley and beyond. There will also be bike games, food, and vendors participating. There will be trophies for the best in show in standard and metric categories. After that, it is time to hit the road for the annual Poker Run. This will hit points throughout the area on a leisurely afternoon ride. Proceeds from the Poker Run this year go to the Salvation Army Summer Camp for kids. After the poker run, riders can muster at the Newcastle Hotel where the fun continues into the evening. So if you like bikes, burnouts and family fun, get in on the madness.

Motorcycle madness is this weekend. Head to downtown Drumheller Saturday morning for breakfast, bikes and biker

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Terry Kuhl has a unique ride and he’ll have it out this weekend during Motorcycle Madness. Considered the “other” American motorcycle, he found a great fit with his 2012 Victory Cross Country. A relative newcomer to the American motorcycle market, Victory is a part of the well-known Polaris Industries. They started up Victory in 1998, producing everything from cruisers to touring bikes. Polaris also now owns

the famous Indian Motorcycle name. Kuhl’s Cross County came from a dealership in Edmonton. It is powered by a big 106 c.i. V-twin and brags the biggest saddlebags on the market. Kuhl was in the market for a touring bike and it was choice between this and a Harley Street Glide. The Victory simply fit. Weekender photo by Patrick Kolafa

World’s Largest Dinosaur to get dino-fix Patrick Kolafa The Weekender

The World’s Largest Dinosaur is due for a makeover, and the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce moved to make it happen. The Chamber committed almost $300,000 to the dino-sized project. ‘They are going to refill all the little holes and cracks and do an artistic repaint,” said Chamber president John Shoff. “Instead of the two-tone

John Deere–like colours, they are going to do a new paint design, so it should look completely different and significantly better.” He explains the Chamber hired F&D Scene Change, which has experience with major clients in everything from movie and television studios to amusement parks and public art installations. Shoff said the overhaul should make a significant different in looks and durability. “What they are doing should improve the

longevity of the colours. The paint is a special epoxy type that will harden,” said Shoff. They are also planning to rework a visible support so it blends in with the scenery. “They are going to wrap it in a bark-like material so it looks like a tree. The net difference should be a great improvement,” said Shoff. The World’s Largest Dinosaur opened in 2001 and immediately became a Drumheller icon. A key component of the project was to give

back to the community. Every year, a part of the proceeds of the World’s Largest Dinosaur and Gift Shop goes back into the community. It has supported everything from smaller projects, like supporting local soccer, to a substantial donation to the Badlands Community Facility. In its lifetime, it has contributed in the area of $500,000.

As the province continues to dig out of some of the worst ooding it has ever seen, there are some supports for businesses and cultural institutions that need to rebuild. Canadian Badlands have provided its membership a breakdown of programs available for those aected by ooding. The Provincial Disaster recovery program is the main funding program, which will provide ďŹ nancial assistance to municipalities, businesses, agricultural organizations and residents. These are for uninsurable losses as a result of a disaster or event. It is administered by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, part of Municipal Aairs. The Economic Development Alliance of Southern Alberta has also oered to assist businesses and agricultural operations with applications to the Disaster Relief program. There are more programs for dierent levels of government and agencies to provide support

following a disaster. The provincial government’s Community Initiatives Program (CIP), which is funded by Alberta Lotteries, is there for not for proďŹ t organizations, including in the case of disaster relief. There may be support for museums that were damaged in the ooding through the Canadian Heritage Museums Assistance Program. This has an emergency program that is open to all incorporated non-proďŹ t Canadian Museums. This funding can cover moving and storage of at risk collections. The Alberta Museums Association does not appear to have an assistance program in place, but is working on coordinating with other organizations to assess the needs of culture and heritage organizations. One endeavour is the Calgary and Area NonproďŹ t Organizations Flood Impact Survey by the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations. This will identify what the greatest needs are, to be passed to partner organizations.

Summer and Salmon Ahhh - those two go hand in hand. Nothing beats a nice salmon on the barbecue! We recently had guests at our cabin and the men took turns cooking. Yes, it is possible! There are some great cooks out there! One of the finer meals included a wonderful salmon dish - I couldn’t wait for the recipe. Here it is - simple and delicious: Mix equal parts maple syrup and brown-sugar barbecue sauce. Add some lemon pepper to taste. Brush on the salmon, wrap in foil and grill for 25 - 30 minutes (depending, of course, on the size of the fish) The bottom portion has a lovely carmelized glaze to it and the top is moist and heavenly. You can make your own barbecue sauce or use a favorite and simply add brown sugar to it. I hear people say they don’t make salmon often because they get tired of making it the same, boring way. Here is an easy and interesting serving idea: Use salmon filets - or just slice up your whole salmon. Slice each filet into four strips. Wrap each piece around a dill sprig. Slide onto a skewer and grill, turning once until it flakes - 4-5 minutes per side. To serve, you can purchase some very good ready-made tzatziki dressings and dips, or try this: 1 cup fat-free plain yogurt 1/4 cup fat-free mayonnaise 2 tablespoons finely chopped seeded peeled cucumber 2 tablespoons snipped fresh dill 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 garlic clove, crushed Mix all ingredients and drizzle over the salmon. Serve either of these salmon recipes over a bed of rice and enjoy!

SPORTS Two more additions top up Dragon roster Submitted | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Dragons are two more players stronger, signing Ethan James and Harrison Blayney to the squad. Ethan James is a 1995-born forward who played for the Southeast Tigers AAA in Medicine Hat. Ethan had two goals and nine assists in 12 games last season. “Ethan is a highly skilled, smooth skater with very good hockey sense,” said Dragons

head coach and general manager Brian Curran. “We look for great things from Ethan and are very happy to have him in Drumheller.” Ethan had this to say about his recent signing, “I chose the Dragons because it’s the best fit for me as a player entering junior hockey. I feel Brian Curran will develop me and he is a proven coach at all levels. I am excited for this opportunity.” Harrison Blayney is also a 1995-born for-

ward who played for the St. Albert Sports Raiders AAA. In 32 games, Harrison had three assists and 108-PIM. “Blayney is a strong skater, a big forward who competes hard and likes the physical side of the game,” said Curran. “ He is player who our fans will enjoy watching. We are happy to have him as part of the Dragon Family.” Blayney commented on his signing with the Dragons, “I chose Drumheller because I felt that

the coaching staff and the organization itself were where I wanted to start my junior career. I have family down in the Drumheller area which also helped me out on choosing where I wanted to go. I am very excited for the season to start and to meet new faces.” The Dragons Organization would like to congratulate Ethan and Harrison, along with their families.

Spring league basketball wrapped up and in the junior high–high school division, the Heat, coached by Joey Browning, won the gold medal. Spring Basketball has become an institution in the valley and this year four teams at the grade 7-12 level competed as well as Grade 4-6 teams. Browning’s team went 7-3 in league play, and then cruised through the playoffs. “They were one of the greatest groups I had to coach,” said coach

Browning. James Fournier, and Sam Lockhart also coached teams this season, but it was Browning’s team against a team coached by Kyle Masson in the final. Spring League is a minor development

To win, you have the highest amount of points throughout the event.” Spencer had a bronze finish the 7-11-year-old 85cc class and finished 18th in the supermini. Tori raced in two competitions, where she finished 7th in the 50cc class and 12th in the supermini. Barrett, Decklin, and Spencer competed in the supermini against one another. “(In the supermini) there are kids racing against each other from 7-years-old to 16. There were 37 riders at the

gate, which is the largest number of riders the Drumheller boys rode against during WCAN. It got some nerves going, because with that many bikes, anything can happen before the first corner,” said Sherry. Over the past week, the riders were given some intense training from Brandon Beabout from Rockwell Training in California. Beabout has trained some of the top youth riders in the US. The Drumheller Offroad Vehicle Association is getting ready to host their own Alberta Motorsports Championship Series competition on August 3.
