Bill Spooner “I use Muskol. It’s strong and keeps the bugs away. It’s good stuff.”

Pam Earl “We use tons of bug spray so we can enjoy the outdoors and the nice weather. I would never want them to keep me cooped up inside.”

Mike and John Ray “We smack ‘em and slap ‘em.”

Town assures mosquito numbers will fall Michael James & Patrick Kolafa

| inSide Drumheller

Drumheller is besieged. After a perfect combination of weather it seems no where is safe from the mosquito hordes that lurk in every corner of town. However, Town of Drumheller officials say the blight of mosquitoes won’t last. “All of the standing water in town right now has been sprayed,” assured Mayor Terry Yemen. “Residents should notice a difference by the end of the week.” Since the last major rainfall, crews have been working diligently to spray standing water throughout town. Sampling has confirmed minimal larva counts. An unseasonably wet spring and early summer left an abundance of standing water throughout town, ideal for laying eggs. Two helicopter spraying programs have been done, with the last being two and a half weeks ago. No more helicopter sprayings are expected for the rest of the year. Significant rainfall after the last aerial application, created more ponds to serve as breeding grounds. More rain could result in more surges in mosquito numbers.

Just as residents were starting to enjoy the summer weather, a new horde of mosquitoes hatched this past weekend. Heavy rainfall has resulted in many pools of standing water throughout town, ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The Town of Drumheller assures residents ground spraying continues and the mosquito numbers will drop by the end of the week. filephoto

“We’re looking at $40,000 for each helicopter trip and we’ve done it twice. That’s pretty much tapped out our budget as far as the aerial application goes. We can still do it by hand, but it’s not as effective. If we continue to get lots of rain, we’ll have to apply on the ground, because we don’t have a budget left for aerial applications.” Residents should be prepared when going outside, as mosquitoes can carry the po-

tentially lethal West Nile virus. Alberta Health Services warns residents need to protect themselves. Although there were no cases of West Nile virus in Alberta in 2011, there were 102 cases confirmed in Canada. Dr. Gerry Predy, Alberta Health Services Senior Medical Officer of Health said residents should not take the risk of West Nile virus lightly. “West Nile virus infection can cause severe illness with

debilitating, lifelong effects, particularly in older adults. I urge all Albertans to continue to fight the bite,” said Predy. Residents can protect themselves by covering up; wearing light coloured long sleeve shirts, pants and hats can help protect the skin. So can mosquito repellents that contain DEET. Residents could consider staying indoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

Presenting longevity awards

We’ve got a winner!

Following the Canada Day Parade, on July 1, friends and family gathered in the Freemasons Hall as three Brethren were presented with longevity awards. Bill Hunter (left), was presented with his 50 Year Jewel by Doug Wade. Robert Gibson (middle), was presented with his 60 Year Bar and Bill Spooner (right), was presented with his 70 Year Bar.

Sara-Jade Angers (left) gives a big thumbs up with reporter Donella Swan and her new bike. Angers, who just turned five this past weekend, was the second winner of The Drumheller Mail’s Canada Day Parade Win a Bike contest. Angers, who lives in Calgary, was visiting Drumheller with her family during the Canada Day weekend. During the parade, she yelled hard as The Drumheller Mail/inSide Drumheller float rode by, screaming “I want to win a bike!” This is the first time Angers and her family came out for Canada Day in Drumheller. Congratulations!

Sailing the mighty Red Deer River

Rides Phillip Judge captains the Bleriot Ferry on a hot summer day. The newest Bleriot Ferry was built in 1997, but there’s been a ferry at the same site for over a century. Andre Bleriot, brother of Louis Bleriot (the first person to fly across the English Channel), moved from Paris to the Orkney area and operated the first ferry. The Bleriot Ferry is one of only seven ferries operational in Alberta today. The Bleriot Ferry can be found going west on Highway 838, past the Royal Tyrrell Museum and Horsethief Canyon, and runs from 8:00 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. every day, until the river freezes. Judge has been piloting the ferry since May, with fellow operators Andy Eckland and Warren Guterson. “Everybody who comes are smiling all the time, the people are great. It is so much fun to drive the ferry, said Judge. “I like to think I have to coolest ride in town. inSide photo by Michael James

It will be madness downtown tomorrow. The streets will be filled with the rumbling of hundreds of motorcycles in the 2012 Motorcycle Madness. This year, the event will be supporting Big Country Victim Services. “This year we’re giving to Big Country Victim Services. It’s a great cause to support,” said Connie Tremblay, with the downtown committee. “The whole event is done to have some fun, enjoy the biker lifestyle, attract bikers to the valley, and raise money for charity. We hope people come and support us, so we can give them as much support as we can. It’s a needed service in the valley,” said Terry Kuhl, who helped organize Motorcycle Madness Last year, Motorcycle Madness raised roughly $2500 for the Drumheller and District Humane Soci-

ety. The action kick starts on Friday night with the Steak Ride and Dinner, which starts between 5 and 6 p.m. tonight at Yavis Family Restaurant. Things pick up again tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. for the DARTS pan-

cake breakfast and Poker Run registration. The Poker Run starts at 10:30 a.m. Participants must collect playing cards from various stops to make the best poker hand possible. “This year, the poker run will take us to Rosebud, Rockyford, Carbon, Wayne, and then back into downtown Drumheller. The person with the best poker hand wins the prize,” said Kuhl. “The best poker hand is going to win half of the proceeds, the other half becomes part of the donation to the charity.” After the riders get back from the Poker Run, it’s time for the bike games, burnout pit, and the show and shine, where the bikes are judged. There are four categories, American standard, metric, custom, and vintage. The top three in each category will get a cash prize. “The bike games are always a huge hit. People, especially those who aren’t into biking, wonder how the bikes can do what they do,” said Kuhl. To go along with the motorcycles, there have been more activities added for the whole family. This will be the second year of the Motorcycle Madness fashion show, and the first for a lacrosse demonstration and miniature golf. “We’re able to reach the younger children and teens. We’re trying to bring it to families in the communities and make it fun for the entire community.” The madness begins tonight for bikers, but everyone can come out tomorrow and enjoy a day of horsepower and fun.

Residents warned after confirmed Hantavirus case Michael James | inSide Drumheller

A potentially fatal virus has been conďŹ rmed in a Central Alberta resident. Residents are being asked to take precautions when dealing with mice droppings, nests, or bodies to avoid infection by Hantavirus. Last week, Alberta Health Services issued a warning about the deadly virus after a Central Alberta resident developed Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. “Because humans can be exposed to Hantavirus when the urine or feces of an infected rodent, such as a mouse, becomes airborne. Anyone who disturbs areas of mice or mice droppings can be at risk,â€? said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Medical OďŹƒcer of Health in a press release. “It’s essential people take precautions to protect themselves and reduce their risk of illness.â€? Upon discovering mouse droppings, nests, or dead mice, residents are asked to take the following precautions. Open doors and windows for ventilation and stay out of the area for at least 30 minutes. Wear rubber gloves and soak the droppings, nests, and dead mice with a bleach/ water solution of one part bleach to nine parts water or a household disinfectant. Let the solution sit for ďŹ ve minutes.

Never disturb the area prior to soaking with the bleach solution. Mop up the bleach soaked droppings, nest, and dead mice, or pick up with paper towels. Then place them in a plastic bag and seal. Wash your gloves before removing and then your hands. Do not vacuum or sweep droppings, nests, or dead mice. This can create dust, which may contain Hantavirus, and could be inhaled. Anyone dealing with signiďŹ cant mouse infestations or infestations in poorly ventilated spaces should contact Health Link Alberta at 1-866-408-5465. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome can result when coming into contact with rodent wastes, saliva, or through being bitten. Though rare, it can be fatal. Individuals infected with Hantavirus show symptoms one to two weeks after exposure, or in some case up to ďŹ ve weeks. Symptoms resemble a severe u and include fever, body aches, chills, abdominal problems, and severe breathing problems. “It is important anyone who has recently been in an area contaminated by mice and has developed severe ulike symptoms or diďŹƒculty breathing see a doctor immediately,â€? said Hinshaw.

Sooo… Where ya from? Who are you? Janice Oslie Where are you from? Vancouver, British Columbia What brings you to Drumheller? Our friends came to visit us from the United Kingdom. We decided to take them to the Calgary Stampede this week. After melting in the sun at Stampede Park we decided to travel to Edmonton. Drumheller wasn’t too far off the beaten path so we took them here. We have been here a few times before and thought it was really neat. What do you like most about the valley so far? Our friends had read about The World’s Largest Dinosaur and thought it was pretty neat. As

to

Keith and Janice Oslie, Hanna, Mark, and Karen Busby, Vancouver, BC and North Wales,UK

for myself, I think the Tyrrell Museum will be a highlight. My husband and I brought our kids here a few years ago and they just loved it. We enjoyed all the dinosaurs. Is there anything you haven’t liked about Drumheller this trip? Not really, we’ve really enjoyed our adventure so far and we are happy we were able to share this with our friends. If we were to visit Vancouver, what is something you would suggest we do while there? I would tell visitors to check out Grouse Mountain. It provides a spectacular view of the city and gives it a different perspective.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

or have a new appreciation for [reptiles and amphibians] then I feel accomplished,” said Shawn Fraser, a keeper at Reptile World. Fred the alligator, which is one of the main attractions at the private exhibit, weighs in at 600 pounds. It’s no surprise he gets excited at feeding time. “We feed him every Saturday at 5 p.m. He eats dead rats and mice. He can eat up to a dozen at a time,” said Fraser. Brittany is brought out from time to time for guests, young and old, to have a chance to hold. Showing her off, curious visitors flocked around her and Fraser. Some timid and some fearless, there was a sense of wonder surrounding the snake in the group of visitors. “We like to bring Brittany out for people to see that [snakes] are not the monsters they are made out to be in the movies,” said Fraser. Fraser said this exhibit is one of the few places in Canada that has venemous snakes on display. The idea is to educate visitors about the

animals and Fraser reminds guests that snakes usually won’t attack in the wild, unless provoked. Also making their home at Reptile World are some Burmese pythons, anacondas, a salt water crocodile, and poison dart frogs, who sport a vibrant blue because there isn’t much they're afraid of in nature. Besides public visits, Reptile World also gives special school or group talks, which

is part of their goal to educate the public about these interesting, and somewhat misunderstood animals explained Fraser. Open from 10 a.m to 10 p.m. seven days a week, for the summer, Reptile World makes it easy for visitors to stop in and view the spectacular reptiles and amphibians on display. Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Some change is in order, Aries. You have realized it for some time now, but this week it must come to fruition. Think about the way you want to approach this. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you are on an emotional roller coaster and don't know how you will feel from one second to the next. Figure out your goal for each day and then go along for the ride. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you feel like staying in a dream world surrounded by a fence of your own making. But the reality of work and family life has to set in at some point. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 There is something in the stars this week pushing you to make a change, Cancer. The change may be as simple as wearing your hair a new way or as significant as changing careers.

Campfire Cones Here are the basic ingredients, but what you fill them with is a creative choice. The possibilities are many! * Sugar Cones * Peanut Butter * Mini Marshmallows * Chocolate Chips * Bananas * Aluminum Foil 1. Slice the bananas and get some marshmallows and chocolate chips ready. 2. Spread some peanut butter on the inside of the cone, then put in the bananas, marshmallows and chocolate chips. 3. Wrap the whole cone in aluminum foil, then put in over the hot coals for 5-10 minutes or so, turning every so often. 4. Unwrap, checking that it's all gooey, and melted inside ... then dig in and enjoy!

Arts, culture, recreation & inspiration. Outstanding lifestyle, amazing business opportunities.

Butterfly Treats (see photo) You can fill the small bags with any assortment of treats. In mine, I put grapes in one half, then Goldfish crackers in the other. I think these would look pretty with M&M's or Smarties too. I held the middle of the bag with one hand, giving it a bit of a twist while filling the second half. Use the pipe cleaner to hold it closed in the centre, then clip on a clothespin that you or a child has decorated. Curl the pipe cleaners to become antennae. Use your imagination to glue on eyes - you can buy the google eyes in craft departments, use sticky dots as I did, or simply draw or paint them on. These would be nice party favors, but also fun for a picnic or road trip.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Things are off to a rough start this week, but better days are right around the corner. Keep thinking about the good times ahead. They will be here before you know it. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, it's time to reconsider a difficult situation. If you still hold to a particular belief, you could be limiting your possibilities. Adopt a new point of view to gain a different perspective.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 This is the week to shop for something new, Libra. It may be a new wardrobe, some new furnishings, or even a new car. Your purchasing power is high right now. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Your academic history and workload don't leave much room for creativity. But if you want to go out and do something, then simply do it. You will find a workaround. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, something important has passed but you are still reaping the benefits. Bask in the afterglow as much as you can because it can't last forever. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you may find you're struggling a little to define your identity, but things will fall into place soon. You're an ecclectic mix of attributes, anyway. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, maintain a positive attitude this week and you'll benefit greatly from having done so. Once you get it right, everything will click. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, for one reason or another, some issues will go unresolved this week. They can wait, so don't worry.

Groups support facility with colossal donations Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Two community groups are pitching in to help the Badlands Community Facility. On Wednesday, July 11, Herman, Kloot, and Company and the Drumheller Lions donated substantial sums to the new facility. Herman, Kloot, and Company donated $25,000 to the Badlands Community Facility. “This ďŹ rm is committed to this community. We want to see our community thrive, grow, and have stability. It’s a beautiful facility, and we want to see phase 2,â€? said Colin Kloot. The Drumheller Lions added to their previous donation. Two years ago, the Lions donated $16,000 to the facility. They have now donated an additional $15,000 to the facility. “We’re adding to our ďŹ rst donation. It’s a great facility for out town and the Lions want to be part of it,â€? said Tony Lacher, with the Lions. “Our mandate is to help the Drumheller community, and that’s what this donation is about,â€? said Clark Layden, president of the Lions. The Badlands Community Facility is hard at work raising money to help the new facility and make the next phase of construction possible. Anyone interested in donating can contact Heather Little, Marketing and Events OďŹƒcer for the facility, at hlittle@dinosaurvalley. com.

The Miners Memorial fund got a huge boost thanks to the Drumheller Royal Purple. The ladies of the Royal Purple donated $5,000 to help make the memorial a reality. It is estimated the donation brings the memorial funds to roughly $47,000 from donations. That, combined with a matching $49,500 grant from the province, will help the memorial be ready for the unveiling on November 10. The Miners Memorial Committee is in the process of finalizing the design with the sculptor. Sea Dragon makes splash at Stampede Parade After wowing crowds at the Drumheller Canada Day parade, the Royal Tyrrell Museum took it’s monster show on the road for the Calgary Stampede parade last week. The Tyrrell float, a huge elasmosaur complete with working paddles and bubble machine, won several awards, Most Creative, Best Non Profit, and second overall. The Tyrrell float was based on the museum’s newest exhibit, Alberta’s Last Sea Dragon. submitted photo

Do you remember when a new challenge was inspiring?

are you? WHO Age: 19 Employer: Rocky Mountain Equipment Employment: A second year apprentice heavy duty mechanic What do you like most about your job? I like the people I work with. We have a really good crew here. How long have you lived in Drumheller? I’ve lived here all my life. What do you like most about the valley? The scenery for sure. It’s different than anywhere else, and I’d much rather be here than in a big city. What are some of your hobbies outside of work? I like to go quadding. I sometimes go to Willow Creek to ride, it gets me out of the house and that’s what I enjoy. What technology could you not live without? Well to be honest, there’s a lot of things I could live without. However, I don’t think I could live without my alarm clock. Without it, I’d be late for work a lot more often. If you made a movie about your life, which actor would play the role of you? Now that

would be a box office hit. I would have to say Tom Green. He’s hilarious! What are three words that describe Brett? Funny. Outgoing. Energetic. What has been the unluckiest situation you have ever encountered? When I found out the fuel gauge didn’t work on my truck. I had just pulled out of my driveway when it ran out of fuel. I wasn’t very impressed to say the least. What’s been your most embarrassing moment? Definitely when I bring a girlfriend home to meet the family and my mom breaks out the baby albums. It’s not even funny, it’s like a cliche out of a movie. Is there anything that you would like to try that you haven’t gotten the chance to yet? I really want to go deep sea fishing. It would be an adventure I think. Reeling in like a 50 pound fish would be awesome and would definitely test your fisherman skills. Any words of wisdom? Never give up.

SPORTS Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

Last week I went grocery shopping. As the term “shopping” implies, I like to shop around, that is, I look for the best price on the product for which I am looking. This sometimes necessitates visiting all three of the grocery stores in town, at one time or another. With three stores, you can usually find what you are looking for at a reasonable price. While out shopping, I grabbed a couple of smaller items, and as I was making my way to the check-out, I saw 2 litre bottles of pop on sale for $1.39. I would have paid no heed, except that I remembered my sister was coming for the weekend, and she likes root beer. At $1.39 for 2 litres, how could I pass it up? I grabbed a jug. As it turned out, my sister couldn’t make it to town, and I wound up drinking the whole 2 litres of root beer. I like a nice, frosty mug of root beer every now and again, but I’m really more a of Dr. Pepper man. And this is where the story really begins.

After weeding and mowing the lawn several days ago, I had a thirst on, and an ice cold Dr. Pepper sounded real good. I had been out visiting an old friend, and on the way home stopped in at a local convenience store. I had exactly $2.40 on my person. I went into the store, grabbed a 350ml bottle of Dr. Pepper, priced at $2.19, and took it to the counter. The kid at the counter scanned it, it beeped, and he “$2.40”, to which I replied, in disbelief, “2 dollars and how much?” “Two dollars and forty cents”. I gave the kid all I had and walked out. Normally I would say “thank you” but I was a little shocked. When I got home, I tried to figure out how the kid had taken $2.19 to $2.40. I couldn’t do it with GST, so I went back to the store and asked how they did it. They explained to this ignorant mook all about deposits, recycling charges, and stuff like that. I thanked them for the lesson that I can get almost 6 times their $2.40, 350 ml bottle for half the price at another store. I learned convenience has a price. It is convenient for the store that so many of us are lazy and stupid, speaking for myself anyway.

Upon first hearing the name pickleball, a tasty appetizer might come to mind. However, down at the new Badlands Community Facility, pickleball includes paddles, a ball and a whole lot of fun. Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the game of pickleball is being played in the field house, and no it’s not something involving a kitchen. “It’s really a sport for both

body and mind,” said Janice Rosgen, who comes out regularly to take in the action. Pickleball is a racquet sport, combining elements from tennis, badminton and table tennis rolled into one. This is why Rosgen said it is both a physical and mental sport; you’ve got to be both quick on your feet and sharp of mind to remember all the rules. However, that does not mean the game is difficult once a player catches on. The rules are seemingly very

Charting a new course for Alberta-Asia relations Asia Advisory Council Member

Alberta will focus new energy and expertise on the growing economies of Asia with an advisory council of experts to advise on business, cultural and academic relations with Asia. We are looking for interested volunteers to serve on the council and help inform and advise on strategic priorities and how to best tap into the tremendous opportunities in the region.

similar to table tennis, but what really makes the sport popular is its accessibility to a wide range of players. “We are aiming to get more players out here on the court. Right now it’s mainly older people playing but we would like to see some younger people here too,” said Bob Friesen, who also is an avid pickleball player. The game is played with hard, small square paddles, which the BCF supplies, and a plastic wiffle ball, (hollow with holes surrounding its outside) which allows the speed of the ball to be approximately 1/3 of the speed of a tennis ball. The court is similiar to the layout and size of a doubles badminton court. Games are only played up to 11 points, and at the end of each match opposing players tap their paddles and say “good game,” as a sign of sportmanship. Pickleball was originally developed in the summer of 1965, by US Congressman Joel Pritchard and some friends. The families were bored, so they set out to play a game of badminton but the shuttlecock was missing. Improvising, they lowered the badminton nets, found a wiffle ball to play with, and made small paddles out of some plywood they had kicking around. The name Pickleball originated from Joan Pritchard, who said the game reminded her of a “pickle boat,” where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. Today, the game is played by many throughout the world. If anyone has questions, regular player Bob Friesen said he’d be happy to answer them and to give him a call at (403) 823-4407.
