It’s a long way down for Andrew Suntjens as he rolls around the field house of Flyin’ Bob’s Circus Camp. After a generous donation from the Drumheller Rotary Club, the Badlands Community Facility was able to host a summer day camp for kids willing to take a swing at their circus skills. The camp ran from July 16 to 18, with the kids learning fifteen circus skills in various activities from tight rope walking, feather balancing to stilts and unicycling. After the two days of skill building, the kids will be able to showcase their newly acquired abilities in a performance at 2 p.m. to wrap up the camp.

Garry Arnold “Lots of fluids, lots of hats, and lots of sunscreen.”

Motorists ignore radar speed sign Lauren Main | inSide Drumheller

After an investigation that took place by the radar speed sign near McConkey park yielded surprising results, one answer is clear: when it comes to speed, drivers are bending the rules. Wednesday, July 9, between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., an inSide Drumheller stakeout was placed near McConkey Park.

“Playground zones are in effect from 8:30 a.m. until a half hour after dusk. When we write a ticket, and you’re doing 50 in a 30 zone with children in the park, there’s going to be no breaks.”

The radar speed sign sits outside of McConkey Park as a warning to drivers to slow down to thirty kilometers per hour while passing through the playground zone.

Below is a breakdown of the 81 vehicles inSide Drumheller observed passing the radar speed sign located at McConkey Park, heading west on Wednesday, July 9 between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The playground zone, and speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour is clearly posted.

Former Drumheller Town Councillor Doug Stanford has increased his family contribution to the Badlands Community Facility and he challenges others to follow suit. Always a proponent of the facility, Stanford donated to it early on, and his family has been members. He feels it is a valued part of the community. He recently increased his contribution to $5,000. This was spawned by a number of factors. Drumheller Town Council recently received a retroactive increase for cost of living. Because he was serving during the allotted time, he received a cheque, which he decided to donate to the facility. He then decided to top up the funds to the level that his family can be recognized on the BCF

donor wall. Recently, all of the Town of Drumheller Town Council committed to pledge their cost of living increase over the next 12 months to

BCF fundraising. The total donation of $3,640 will be recognized as part of the Legacy Project, to be installed on the Legacy Wall in the BCF.

selves on the rules associated with playgrounds. “We’ve had the sign up for about three weeks now,” Doucette says. “Playground zones are in effect from 8:30 a.m. until a half hour after dusk. When we write a ticket, and you’re doing 50 in a 30 zone with children in the park, there’s going to be no breaks.” Speeding tickets for a playground zone will vary. Fines are determined by how fast a vehicle is travelling. License demerit deductions will vary from 3-6 demerits taken off.

With the car parked and a watchful eye on the radar speed sign, an alarming amount of the eighty-one drivers drove through the playground’s thirty zone with no regards for the posted speed limit. Fifty-nine per cent of drivers passed through the 30 km/h zone speeding, and of those speeders, fifty-seven per cent were going up to 10 km/h over the speed limit. Constable Eric Doucette is a traffic control officer with the Drumheller RCMP and urges drivers to educate them-

St. Anthony’s host pilgrimage to Passion Play Bishop Fred Henry to say mass

St. Anthony’s Parish in Drumheller is hosting the Drumheller Passion Pilgrimage and has invited everyone to a special event on July 20. At 10 a.m. there will be a mass at the Passion Play Amphitheatre said by Bishop Henry, followed by a barbecue and then the production of the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. submitted

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Catholics from across the province will be coming to Drumheller this summer for a special event at the Passion Play site. St. Anthony’s Parish in Drumheller is hosting the Drumheller Passion Pilgrimage and is inviting members of the Calgary Diocese to the Passion Play for mass, a picnic and then the famous production of the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. Bishop Fred Henry will be leading mass. “It is going to be a great time, we are looking forward to it,” said

Deacon Gary Haney, of St. Anthony’s Parish who is organizing the event. “It is hosted by St. Anthony’s in Drumheller and we just decided we needed to do something for the community to bring people together. There is local community at the parish, then there is the diocese and there is the world community, everyone outside the actual church because we invite everybody.” “You don’t have to be Catholic to come to mass. If you ever want to see what one is like it will be at the Passion Play site.”

He said the local Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Women’s League will be helping out during the event with the picnic barbecue. The youth group is also helping out. Deacon Haney said the Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle is offering childcare during the play. “The Passion Play has been well involved with us too,” said Haney. The Drumheller Passion Pilgrimage is on Sunday, July 20. Mass is at 10 a.m. Following mass there will be a barbecue picnic at the tent area north of the amphitheatre. A free will offering is taken. During the picnic there will be a shuttle bus that will take those who wish, to St. Anthony’s Church to visit The Man of the Shroud exhibit, with a full sized replica of the Shroud of Turin, as well as other artifacts. After that the Passion Play takes to the stage at 3 p.m. So far he says it looks like there will be a good crowd for the event. “It looks like a lot of people are coming in. Many have bought tickets directly through us, we have a special group area in the Passion Play for this. We have also had people out selling tickets at parishes,” he said. The last time Bishop Henry was in Drumheller was for the opening and blessing of the new St. Anthony’s school.

Our farm is actually closer to Rumsey than Drumheller, but I’ve been living in the area for nine years now. What made you move to the area? I got married to a local guy who owned a farm. Since he was more attached to the farm than I was to the city, I ended up moving here. How long have you and your husband been married? Eight years.

What do you like the most about Drumheller? The small community. The city was always crowded. Here, actually know your neighbors. Most interesting place you’ve visited? Mexico, on my honeymoon. Most interesting place you want to visit? Rome! Any hobbies? Since we have the farm, and have to take care of the horses and cows, that ends up being my hobby. What ancestry is “Block”? Danish. Carbon Farmers’ Exchange a tucked away gem Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

A short, scenic drive up Highway 575 out of the Drumheller valley sits a treasure tucked down within another valley. The beautifully preserved Farmers’ Exchange in Carbon is a ninety-nine year old heritage building housing a museum and small art gallery. The Farmers’ Exchange was built in 1915 when coal mining in the area was booming. Originally called the Nash and Burnett store, it was built after Carbon’s fire of 1914, when almost all of the town was destroyed by the fire. As Mabel White, 93, recalled to the museum’s Marvel Nash, the fire

started in the old ice house at the back of her mother’s ice cream shop. The town’s community hall was also lost in the fire, and Nash and Burnett became the town hub for banquets, dinners, dances, and movies. The main floor of the building had the general store known as the Farmers’ Exchange. In 1917 Jack and Len Poxon purchased the store, and the store was tied in closely with community life in Carbon in the 1930s and 1940s. Len later turned the Exchange into a furniture store, which stayed as a family business until 1974 - almost 60 years. Pieces of everyday life from bygone eras can be found at the exchange, including memorabilia from the area’s coal min-

Throughout summertime, drumhellertourism.com will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

Richmond, British Columbia Who are you? (l-r) Bree, Lanous, Molly and Ashley Stotts. Where are you from? We’re visiting from Richmond, B.C., which is basically a part of the Vancouver city, so we just say we’re from there. Nobody knows where Richmond is. What type of transportation did the family use to get to Alberta? Well, Bree and the kids flew and landed in Edmonton, but I drove a couple days later. How long of a drive is it from Richmond to Alberta? It took me two days.

Why are you visiting Drumheller today? My family is from Bashaw, and Bree has always wanted to visit. Anything planned on your tourlist? We’re going to see the hoodoos, the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and if we have time, going to take a ride on the Bleriot Ferry. If we visited Richmond, what would you suggest we see? Go down to Steveston Market, it’s right near the ocean. Go see the boats and have some fish and chips. Also, visit Granville Island.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

MAKE IT, BAKE IT, GROW IT! Saturdays from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm Greentree Mall, Drumheller Remie Defoor had his eye on this land-yacht for quite some time. He found this 1969 Chrysler New Yorker north of Rowley. For a few years, he kept his eye on it, and when it finally came available, he jumped. This New Yorker is about as big as it gets, weighing over two tons and over 18 feet tip to tail. This was the first year of the reworked c-body by Chrysler, known as “fuselage styling.” To get

something this big off the line takes a bit of power, which this brings it in spades with 440 c.i. V8, delivering 480 foot pounds of torque out of the box. This car is as original as it gets, with even original paint. An extra treasure that came with the New Yorker is a collection of 150 eight track tapes.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you have a lot of energy going into this week, so tackle any assignments early on. By the end of the week your energy levels may dip, so get to work. Just begin tomorrow with a can-do attitude. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, your mind may wander but it is important to remain as focused as possible. Important information is revealed in the next few days. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, a budding relationship appears ready to grow more serious. Take advantage of this opportunity.

AUCTIONS It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Angela Maria Gieck, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on July 14, 2014 at Drumheller Continuing Care (Victoria Lane), surrounded by her family. She was born in Haynes, Alberta and moved to Drumheller with her family at an early age and lived in Drumheller for the rest of her life. Angela was predeceased by her husband David Gieck (2007), her parents Agostino and Francesca Cardamone, her brother and sister-in-law Tony and Noemi Cardamone, her sister and brother-in-law Kay and Mario Blasetti. She is survived by her loving children, Cathy (Bob) Chambers of Morrin, Ed Butt of Morrin, Tony (Cathy) Butt of Drumheller, her grandchildren Mark Chambers, Chris (Deanna) Chambers, Melanie (Ryan) Monaco, Jenna (Wes) Leath-Watson, Michael (Monica) Butt, Tyler Butt and Brittany Butt, her great-grandchildren Malachi, Kerric, Kaelin, Tyson, Tanner, Julia and Cali, her brother and sister-in-law Joe and Anna May Cardamone, and many nieces and nephews. Angela enjoyed working with the public at North Drum Grocery, Anderson Drugs and Jennifer’s Fashions until her retirement. Family was everything to her. She donated many evenings and weekends babysitting her grandchildren with Dave’s help for 7 years. She especially enjoyed family gettogethers, picnics, holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. She was interested in all the grandchildren’s activities and travelled to many hockey games and tournaments. She treated all the kid’s friends as extended family. She enjoyed camp-outs at Pine Lake, the trips to Ft. McMurray and Kelowna with each of the families and spending time at the farm riding around on the machinery especially at seeding and harvest. Dave taught her to fish and they spent many days fishing and travelling in the motorhome to B.C. and Pine Lake. Angela was a life member of the CWL and a member of the Sewing Circle and enjoyed their many get-togethers. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her. We wish to thank Dr. Maseka, the staff of the Drumheller Hospital, the staff at Continuing Care (Victoria Lane) for their care, kindness and compassion to Mom and us especially in her final days. It will always be remembered. A service will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Drumheller at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Interment of her ashes will follow at the Drumheller Cemetery for the family. In lieu of flowers, if you so desire donations can be made to: Drumheller & Area Health Foundation (Continuing Care) 351 9th St NW, Drumheller AB, T0J 0Y1, Alberta Diabetes Foundation or the charity of your choice in memory of Angela Gieck. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Their help is greatly appreciated. 2 9 c

Not all dangers in the river are monsters... Lauren Main | DrumhellerTourism.com

The Red Deer River which flows through Drumheller has been an integral part of the community; it provides residents with an escape from the blazing Albertan heat, various water activities, and a peaceful view at the end of the day. But as floaters, boaters, swimmers, and bridge jumpers take to the river this summer, safety precautions must be kept in mind.

summer months, river goers are urged to examine it closely before going in for a dip. Shelby Augart is a certified lifeguard at the Drumheller Aquaplex and knows the dangers of unsafe

“You can’t have any alcohol on the beach, or if you’re floating down the river on a tube. You can’t be drinking, and obviously if you’re operating a boat and you’ve been drinking, then it’s Criminal Code. It’s impaired operation of a vessel. It’s the same as if you’re drinking and driving in a car, the same rules apply for a boat.” Corporal Kevin Charles Drumheller RCMP

The spring runoff from the snowy winter, in combination with heavy rainfall, could be a deadly recipe for residents seeking fun on the river. As the temperature and river flow reach higher throughout the

waters. “Be conscious of the current and realize that it’s different than the pool.” Augart said, “Know your limits. Educate yourself. You don’t know how dangerous things can be.” Safety guidelines have been put in place to make sure harm doesn’t come to any wishing to cool down in the river, and these guidelines will be reinforced with fines ranging up to $287 (bridge jumping.) Other punishments affiliated with the river are; littering, $115, drinking in public $115, and if an operator of a boat appears to be intoxicated, Criminal Code charges may be laid. Corporal Kevin Charles of the Drumheller RCMP explains that if rules are overlooked, there can be repercussions. “It’s a public place. You can’t have any alcohol on the beach, or if you’re floating down the river on a tube. You can’t be drinking, and obviously if you’re operating a boat and you’ve been drinking, then it’s Criminal Code. It’s impaired operation of a vessel. It’s the same as if you’re drinking and driving in a car. The same rules apply for a boat,” Charles said. The river has been, and always will be, a hot spot for the residents of Drumheller. Whether it’s to cool off or wind down from the day, residents are advised to be conscious of the dangers associated with flowing waters.

Funky fitness movement hits Drumheller Lauren Main| inSide Drumheller

A local woman has exchanged the gym for a playground in a new ďŹ tness craze she has dubbed Functional Fitness Fascia. Carol Todor has pursued athletics all her life. Training ďŹ tness leaders, yoga and dance students, Todor realized something had always been missing from her ďŹ tness classes. When Todor happened upon the idea of fascia, the network connections between and around our body systems and muscles, she began to learn how the human body works as a continuous unit. “Because I had a back injury, I started exploring for dierent information about fascia, and I came across this guy who was doing a “Fascial Active Stretching Technique,â€? so I started to incorporate little bits into my yoga and my dance, and for myself. I thought, this is starting to feel a little better, and it feels pretty natural,â€? Todor explains. After learning about fascia, Todor was inspired to

reach further in an eort to properly educate herself and integrate the ideas into her daily ďŹ tness routine. Todor’s eorts were rewarded when she

found “MovNat,â€? a program that revolves around the natural movement skills every human has: walking, running, jumping, balancing, crawling, climbing and swimming. In addition, the training also focuses on manipulative abilities like lifting, carrying, throwing, and catching. “I saw what was involved in moving naturally. I was really inspired because I wasn’t too crazy about just walking, and this gave me activities to do while I was walking, so now it’s like walking has opportunities to ďŹ nd ways to move naturally.â€? Todor says, “Basically, it’s based on all the moves we learn when we are very young but we forget to use them. So if we ďŹ nd a log in the bushes, we squat down to pick it up, balance it, and push it up over our head.â€? Todor has found herself looking forward to her future exercises, classes and health. The Functional Fitness Fascia classes Todor had introduced in Drumheller ran for six weeks, and she is contemplating another set of sessions in Mid-August.

summer, which includes working at the Dinosaur Trail Golf and County Club. His golf season has been made even better by some personal bests at Dinosaur Trail. “I got my best score of the year on the ďŹ rst nine,â€? said Hummel, who tells us he also drove 260 yards on a hole there this year and recently sank a 20-foot birdie putt in Acme. He said Dinosaur Trail is his favourite course to golf at, and one of the reasons is in becoming more familiar with the course. He wants to keep working at improving his golf game. Hummel’s game development includes trying to play in a similar style to young American golfer Rickie Fowler. He likes the way Fowler plays and likes the colorful style in which Fowler dresses. Hummel encourages others, especially kids, to give golf a try. It’s hard to beat being on the open fairway “and just cranking itâ€?, he said. “It’s a great sport to get into,â€? Hummel adds, “because if you golf at my age and keep going until you’re 18, you can be ten times the golfer.â€?
