What do you do when faced with a dozen swimsuit-clad lifeguards? If you are Discovery Channel personality Jay Ingram, you give them a math test, of course. Ingram and his crew were filming in Drumheller at the Aquaplex on Wednesday testing the theory that people are worse at math when wearing a swimsuit. See page 3 for more.

OPINION Sorenson shares busy first days as cabinet member

Drumheller is recovering after the flooding several weeks ago, but there is still much left to do. inSide Drumheller asks: “What is your top post-flood priority?”

Cindy Malmberg “Getting the tourist areas repaired and cleaned up.”

Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson, left, was sworn in as a new Minister of State (Finance) by Wayne Woulters, Clerk of the Privy Council, with Prime Minister Stephen Harper looking on. Sorenson’s new duties are keeping him busy, but he hopes to bring rural Alberta issues to cabinet and continue making regular visits to the Crowfoot riding. PMO photo by Jason Ransom

Al Mortensen “Focusing on mitigation to prevent these things. I was evacuated, but my house was pretty far away from the river.”

Joe Castonguay “We need to build some more berms so we don’t panic each time this happens.”

Linda Farmer and Keagan “Our recreation areas, so we can get our kids back playing baseball, but everyone did a wonderful job during the flood.”

Chandelle Hilton “For me, the trails would be nice, because we like to go walking along them.”

Earlier this week, Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson was named as the new Minister of State (Finance) in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet. inSide Drumheller had the opportunity to catch up with Sorenson regarding his appointment to his new position. “It’s a huge undertaking and one is always honoured when the Prime Minister shows that confidence, so I’m very pleased,” said So-

renson. Sorenson was appointed as a Minister of State (Finance), a junior cabinet member position. His duties will include assisting Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance. Since the announcement, Sorenson has been learning his new portfolio and responsibilities. “We are working through those now. My last day and a half have been briefings and there’s binders piled three feet high that I have to go through. Day one on the job, I was being introduced to Fi-

nance Ministers across Canada,” said Sorenson. “The opportunity to work with Jim Flaherty is a huge privilege.” There are challenges ahead. Sorenson highlighted job creation and economic recovery as the major priorities of the Ministry of Finance. Sorenson, who was first elected in 2000, has had a number of responsibilities over his political career, including chair person of various federal committees. “I was honoured when I was asked to chair the Foreign Affairs Committee and then I was asked to chair the Afghanistan Committee. They were difficult committees. Then, when we wanted to get the gun registry completed, I was asked to move to the National Security Committee. Now in cabinet, it’s a huge responsibility. There will be a lot of sweat and hard work put into this. The best way to accomplish anything is to do your homework and work hard,” said Sorenson. Now being a part of cabinet, Sorenson hopes to bring issues from Crowfoot and rural Alberta to the discussions in cabinet and the Min-

istry of Finance. “Rural Alberta and Canada is represented at the table. I think having a rural voice at that finance table is important. Being from Alberta, I can talk about issues facing us. In Canada, job creation is an issue, but in Alberta we’re needing labour. That’s a voice that’s going to be heard,” said Sorenson. Despite the extra workload, Sorenson, who routinely visits communities in the Crowfoot riding, remains committed to appear throughout the

Charges pending following deadly collision Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Charges are pending for the 35-year-old truck driver involved in a fatal accident at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 21 on, July 15. Shortly after noon on Monday, an 18-year-old Three Hills man was killed and a 19-year-old female from Three Hills was airlifted by STARS from the scene of the collision. According to investigators, it appears a transport truck northbound on Highway 21 failed to stop at the intersection. The truck collided with a Honda Civic, eastbound on Highway 9. The two vehicles collided with a parked Carillion pick-up truck north of the intersection. Two workers who were doing highway maintenance were struck by the out-of-control vehicles. The transport truck finally came to rest over 80 metres away in a farmer’s field. The 18-year-old male from Three Hills was confirmed deceased at the scene, while the female remains in critical condition. The occupant of the Honda Civic was transported by ground ambulance and has since been released from hospital.

Police are considering charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. Police are still seeking assistance from possible witnesses. If you have any information on this incident, please contact the Airdrie RCMP at (403) 945-7200 or the Beiseker RCMP at 403-947-3240.

constituency. “The best part of my job remains my constituency and it’s my priority. They have told me I will be doing a lot more travel across the country for meetings and discussions, but I’m going to have time to be around Drumheller and my riding,” said Sorenson. “Constituency work is my bread and butter and what I get the most satisfaction out of. I certainly intend to not disappear with this job. I need to be in my riding.”

How well do you do math in your trunks? Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Broadcaster and author Jay Ingram and the Discovery Channel were at the Aquaplex with the staff testing math skills to

verify a study that suggested people do worse with math in their swim suits. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

How comfortable are you in your bathing suit? Are you one of those that jumps out of the water and covers up with a towel? Or do you stroll down the beach? Do you bask in the sun? Or do you head for a private spot in the shade? Most importantly how good at math are you in your trunks? That is what broadcaster and writer Jay Ingram and the Discovery Channel came to Drumheller on Wednesday to ďŹ nd out. The sta at the Drumheller Aquaplex was put to the test as the Discovery Channel crew ďŹ lmed a new segment for Daily Planet. “There is a study that was published in the U.S. that showed people don’t do math as well when they have a swimsuit on compared to when they are fully clothed,â€? Ingram told inSide Drumheller. To test out this theory, they asked the lifeguard crew to put their math skills to the test. According to Ingram, part of the reasoning behind the theory is that people are self conscious about themselves when they are not fully dressed and not able to concentrate as well. “We’re doing it with

the lifeguard crew here, and we’re not sure if it is going to work because they are so used to having swimsuits on, but then we are gong to run over to Chestermere and get random people who may be in a swimsuit for the ďŹ rst time ever,â€? said Ingram. In fact, Aquaplex sta produced six, 100 per cent results in their bathing suits and only one perfect score clothed. The column for the Daily Planet is tentatively named Seriously. He explains the name came from the Lethbridge City Police spokesperson when they were attempting to debunk the myth as to whether it was possible to light a candle with a Taser. The segment Seriously is slated to air every second Thursday on Daily Planet. No word on when the Drumheller clip will be running.

Show highlights Drumheller’s role in shaping palaeontology bunch of cool things in our collections and galleries, and the crew had the chance to spend the day with him at a new quarry he discovered this year that contains a ceratopsian dinosaur,” said Dooley. Prior to 1884, there was little palaeontology research being conducted in Canada. Then, Joseph Burr Tyrrell discovered the bones of an Albertosaurus near Drumheller. The discovery sparked palaeontological research in Canada and over the century, researchers from Eastern Canada and the United States regularly stopped in the badlands of Alberta. In 1985, the Tyrrell Museum opened and quickly became one of the major facilities for palaeontology in the world. “The Royal Tyrrell Museum is a world renowned facility,” said Dooley. “It’s really great to see that continued recognition. It’s great for the museum and for Drumheller.”

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Dr. Francois Therrien, of the Royal Tyrrell Museum, speaks with the History Channel as part of a new show looking into the history of palaeontology in Canada. Ca-

“The History Channel was visiting the Tyrrell Museum last week, shooting for their four part series looking at the history of palaeontology in Canada. They’ve been travelling across the country, visiting dig sites, scientists, and museums to learn about the history, current work being done, and cool stories over the past 100 years,” said Mike Dooley, public relations coordinator at the Tyrrell Museum. While at the museum, crews filmed in the back rooms and galleries, and even joined researchers and technicians for a day in the field. “When they were here, they were visiting with Dr. Francois Therrien. Bike winner claims prize for flood victims Dallyn Schinnour, 5, son of Crystal and Darcy Schinnour of Calgary, was one of the bike winners in The Drumheller Mail’s Show Us Your Flag Contest. The youngster was through town this week to take possession of his prize. Even at his age he understands the devastation others in his community felt following the serious flooding in Calgary and he has decided to donate his bike to another youngster who lost their belongings in the flood. We give our thumbs up to Dallyn! Barb Coney of The Mail presents Dallyn with his prize. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Volunteers needed for Tour of Alberta Patrick Kolafa The Weekender

Drumheller has an incredible opportunity this September to be a part of an international sporting event which needs the help of a few more volunteers to make it seamless. Excitement across the province is building for the Tour of Alberta, a professional, six-stage race that will crisscross the province with some of the top teams worldwide in the saddle. Drumheller is blessed to see the riders come through the valley twice. Stage 3 on Friday, September 6, will see riders head from Strathmore north through Rosebud and Drumheller. From there, they will head north on a loop and then finish at the World’s Largest Dinosaur. Community Enforcement supervisor, Greg Peters, says there are all kinds of volunteer opportunities for those wanting to help out with the prestigious event. He adds there are op-

ment, or other celebrations highlighting the community. He said the way to sign up is to head to www.tourofalberta.ca and click on the volunteer link to register. Peters says there is a short form to fill out and he will receive a list from the organizers of who has qualified to volunteer for the race. “We need at least 50 more, and I may be being conservative,” said Peters. Mayor Yemen has offered one-month passes to the Badlands Community Facility for those who sign on as volunteers. For more information, go to www.tourofalberta.ca or contact Peters at 403-823-1363.

Oklahoma! engages audience Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Director Becky Neuman had a vision to bring one of the world’s most beloved musicals to Kaleidoscope Theatre’s stage, and the energy injected into the production from all fronts leaves the audience cheering for Oklahoma! The summer musical opened to an appreciative audience on Wednesday night. A cast of familiar faces to Kaleidoscope Theatre, as well as some new ones, bring life to the idyllic western countryside where two suitors vie for the young and beautiful Laurey Williams; one through brute and one through charm. Laurey, played by Darby Andrus, is radiant as the teen crushing on the bowlegged ranch hand, Curly, played by Eric Neuman. While they flirt coyly, the brooding farmhand, Jud, played by Devon Syvertsen, also has an eye for Laurey. As this develops, the more-than-ami-

they put on a professional show. Oklahoma! is more than singing and dancing. Its characters are not superficial, and the story is not trite. The cast is able to draw the audience into the characters, make them believable and sympathetic. This makes everything from the most dramatic fight scenes, to the lightest moments of comedic relief engaging.

Across the board, everyone contributes to make the show engaging, heartfelt and fun. Oklahoma! is on the Kaleidoscope Theatre stage tonight (Friday, July 19) at 7:30 p.m. and this Sunday July 21 at 2:00 p.m. Evening performances continue Tuesday-Friday, July 23-26. Summer School lets young actors hone skills Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A healthy 58 theatre students are getting the education of a lifetime, participating in the Canadian Badlands Summer School. Going into its 15th year, the Canadian Badlands Summer School allows high school students to earn credits, gain incredible experience in the Canadian Badlands Passion Play, and develop their fine arts skills. This season,30 and continues to July 21. This is the second year the school has been delivered from the new St. Anthony’s School. This year, there are students from all across Canada and there is an international flavour with students from Africa.

All of the participants have a chance to participate in the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. On top of that, they get professional training in drama, voice and dance. Professional instructors train students in the fine arts. “They are going to get the most professional experience by participating in all nine performances of the Passion Play,” said Tom Stolz, who operates the school. “Where they are going to be challenged, on their personal growth, is when they come back to the school and do a week of singing and dancing, with acting threaded throughout.” On top of the Passion Play, the students also produce a gala show. Stolz says this year they have made it more reflective of true theatrical

experience. “In order to get some of these lead roles you have to audition against some of the other students,” said Stolz. “That is what it’s like in the real world.” The program is delivered through Christ the Redeemer School Division and students can earn 10 credits from Alberta Education each year. Students can earn five credits in Advanced Acting 15-25-35 and five credits in Leadership 10-2030. Students from other provinces typically can have the credits recognized. “Any Canadian kid will get recognition for what they do here,” said Stolz.

SPORTS on the

run by Michael James

I’m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks I’ll write about my training and what I’ve learned. The On the Run column has dealt largely with the trials of a beginner getting into running for the ďŹ rst time. One of the challenges I’ve been facing, especially recently, is time. Since I began the column, I have typically been able to get out and run three to four times each week. I was feeling good and had been making considerable progress. When I decided to get in shape and run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon, it was not only out of a desire to get in shape, but also as part

of a larger goal to push myself out of my comfort zone. That desire to push beyond my comfort zone also led me to get involved with Kaleidoscope’s new production of Oklahoma!, which has been a fantastic experience. However, between the show and a number of other things going on in my life, I’ve been left with little free time recently. Consequently, I haven’t ran for almost two weeks. This is the danger zone for anyone getting in shape. I’ve worked out over the years o and on, and the most diďŹƒcult part is forcing yourself to get back into the rhythm of things after a hiatus. Even a week can be dangerous. The biggest hurdles to

overcome aren’t physical, though there is an increased potential for injury, they are psychological. There’s the loss of motivation and disappointment when you can’t perform up to your previous eorts. The question I’ve been asking myself is how do I regain that desire to run? The ďŹ rst step is realizing I’m going to have to run a little less. During my last run, I managed to run from the Badlands Community Facility to the Tyrrell Museum and back in one shot, which is about 15 kilometres. It’s important when getting back into the swing of things to take it easy to reduce the risk of injury. The hardest part is convincing your ego that it’s okay to not be at the same level you were prior to your break. Try running with a friend. If you’re in a running rut, having someone to help motivate you may make the

dierence you need. Tracking your runs may help as well. For example, just marking on the calendar what days you ran (not necessarily how much you ran) could help provide some motivation. Another thing to try ,is changing something about your run to relieve any boredom. A TV and treadmill can help do the trick, but for anyone running outside, like myself, you can change your route, for example. For me, changing my playlist helps and I’ve been listening to audiobooks while running. It makes a pretty big dierence. There are many ways to ďŹ nd the motivation to start running again. The trick is to ďŹ nd what works best for you. I’m not sure I’ll have much of an opportunity to run for another week, but once I have more free time I’ll be back on the trails.

Local softball player gearing up for nationals Michael James | inSide Drumheller

One of Drumheller’s softball stars is getting ready to head to nationals later this summer. Cersten Peters, a recently graduated Drumheller Valley Secondary School student, will be joining her team, the Calgary Xtreme, as they head to the Softball Canada Nationals in PEI on August 12. The team earned the opportunity after a strong showing at Division A Provincials last weekend. The Calgary Xtreme started the tournament strong and ended up facing Calahoo in the medal elimination game. In the final inning, the Xtreme

were down by two. “The Xtreme were able to advance runners into scoring position with no one out. Calahoo slowed down the Xtreme’s momentum by changing pitchers and bringing in their closer. The next Xtreme batter had a line shot past the pitcher which was played by the Calahoo infield. Then, a controversial call near second base was one out and a throw to first was the second out. The next Xtreme batter was not able to make full contact and was put out at first, ending the Xtreme’s chance of obtaining medals for the weekend,” said Doug Peters, Cersten’s father. Despite the loss, the team earned a spot at nationals and is preparing for

Cersten will continue her promising softball career after signing with the Lethbridge Pronghorns for the upcoming season. Cersten’s not the only member of the family who competed over the weekend. Brayden, who plays with the Calgary Adrenaline, joined her team at the U14 Provincial Championships. The team soundly won their first two games of the round robin, but lost their second two, putting them in a four-way tie for second place. In the ensuing playoffs, they fell behind against the Lloydminster Rebels and lost by one run. Brayden’s softball season is over, but she plans to return to the field next year. “Brayden is looking forward to next year as she has matured at a fast pace being only 12 years old competing in the U14 A division. The Adrenaline has may opportunities and goals for the 2014 season which she anticipates to be part of,” said Doug. Though Peters’ family had to travel back and forth between Drumheller and Calgary, the experience, like with many sports, has drawn them closer together. “We traveled 29,343 km this year to participate in winter training, spring
