Jordyn and Taylor Reid ready their Canadian flag from this week’s Drumheller Mail for the Canada Day parade scheduled for Friday morning at 10 a.m. The Drumheller Mail and inSide Drumheller will be trailing behind the Atlas Coal Mine’s and mining families’ floats near the front of the parade. As well as tossing out frisbees, we’ll be taking pictures of kids with the flag, and if their photo is selected for next week’s Mail they will win one of two bikes. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie

Racing returns this weekend to Dinosaur Downs as the IMCA will be hosting the first races of the season in Drumheller. This Friday and Saturday dust and smoke will be blowing and four-wheeled racers will be flying around the 3/8-mile oval track. Mike Hansen of the Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society says the races are just one more way residents and visitors can celebrate the Canada Day holiday. “On July 1, we put it in the afternoon, so people can go to the parade, come up and watch some races, and be out of there in time to go downtown for the Canada Day events,” said Hansen. On Friday, gates open at 12 noon, and races start at 1 p.m. On Saturday, they are doing an evening show with gates opening at 6 p.m., and races starting at 7 p.m. The races include IMCA modifieds, which are open front wheeled, but have a stock

car body, IMCA stock cars and truck classes. “It will be pretty entertaining,” said Hansen. “It will be nice to get a show off.” He said they expect a field of 12-16 IMCA modified rac-

ers and about 10-12 IMCA stock cars. He adds the interest in the trucks is spreading throughout drivers. “With the trucks, last time they were here we had about 10 of them, but it sounds like

there might be more coming this time,” said Hansen. The Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society is hoping to stage two more races this season in August and September.

Sandstone Manor, the affordable living apartment building run by the Drumheller Housing Authority, has undergone shifting which has caused cracks in the foundation and other cosmetic problems to the building. It is not a public safety matter at this moment, but there have been significant cracks in the drywall and in one part of the building the cement has dropped significantly. There have been numerous problems with doors being shaved and planed to close easily and properly, and with the shifting that has been the biggest hassle factor. “It’s bad enough that we’re definitely working on solutions at this point,” says Jay Garbutt, board member of the Drumheller Housing Authority. “We’re still trying to get to the bottom of what caused water saturation under the building.” Town CAO Ray Romanetz told council on Monday that the town had de-watered the area as they waited for an architectural analysis. They served notice to the contractor should repairs be needed. Romanetz said even if the weeping tile was fixed, the building would still have water issues as the storm sewer was not extended close

Sandstone Manor, the affordable living apartment complex managed by the Drumheller Housing Authority and built in 2009, has experienced shifting

enough to the building when it was constructed in 2009. Building on the bentonite clay in Drumheller is difficult, Garbutt says, and shifting is something every resident is aware of. “It sounds like the issues that Sandstone Manor is facing are beyond the normal circumstances.” He says the weeping tile, the pipe used for underground

until time has passed, to ensure work has been done properly. “We still have that, and certainly the people who are responsible will be held to pay for repairs. We’re confident we’ll proceed with the repairs and proceed to get monies back from them. We’ll get things fixed then recover our money,” said Garbutt.

Canada by the numbers Each and every July 1, Canadians across the globe celebrate the country's independence. Though the most ostentatious celebrations are likely within Canada's vast borders, Canada Day celebrations also occur in London's Trafalgar Square and in some cities in the United States that border cities in Canada. Canada Day celebrations are significant to native Canadians as well as the country's adopted sons and daughters. To better understand Canada, consider the following figures, courtesy of the Central Intelligence Agency's World Factbook. • 1867: the year Canada became a self-governing dominion • 34 million: the estimated population of Canada as of July 2011 • 41: the median age of all Canadians • 39.8: the median age of Canadian males • 42.1: the median age of Canadian females • 1.056: the at-birth ratio of males to females in Canada • 81.38: the life expectancy at birth of all Canadians • 42.6: the percentage of Canadians of the Catholic faith, the highest such percentage of any religion in the country • 18: the age at which all Canadians become eligible to vote • 18.59 million: the 2010 estimated labor force in Canada • 8: percentage of unemployed Canadians as of 2010 • 1,404: the number of airports in Canada • 12: the number of heliports in Canada

Drumheller marketing group moves forward Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller Drumheller has taken its first steps towards creating a marketing organization specifically for promoting the valley. Members of the Drumheller Valley Buying Group recently briefed council on a meeting they had with another marketing organization, Chinook, which serves the area of Lethbridge. Leanna Mohan of the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the town’s economic development officer Ray Telford spoke to council last Monday about the initiative, which was put in motion by the Tourism Master Plan completed this year. The buying group has been responsible for researching the project and all their suggestions at this point are only recommendations given to council. “The most important thing right now is that we have to come up with a draft budget, how we are going to fund it, a list of rec-

ommendations on how it will be self sustainable,” says Telford. The Drumheller Marketing Organization (DMO) has been recommended by the buying group to offer a fee based service for valley attractions to contribute funds for promoting Drumheller in the media and online. The recommendations offered on how to run the DMO are only suggestions, and the final function of the DMO will be agreed to by both the town and the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce. Mohan told council the Chamber of Commerce has said they are interested in providing office space for the DMO. “Our goal right now is to have a manager in place for the DMO by the fall, I’m going to say October,” said Telford, adding they will have a plan on how to fund and operate the DMO. “It will be arm’s length from the town and the chamber, it will be

run by a board of directors. That is one of the things we have to work towards,” said Telford. “We’re looking to bring in more people. We’ll be doing good marketing to bring people to the valley, whether its spending time at the museum, the convention centre, or just having a good time in Drumheller.” They will also look to bring in operators to take advantage of the DMO’s marketing. The research group is recommending that the DMO be self sustainable, to not rely on member fees. “It’ll be an organization that focuses solely on marketing Drumheller. We’ve done well the last 20 years for tourism, but it's not at the point where you need someone full time to be doing it.” “Tourism is really good for economic development because people visiting Drumheller may make it their home in five, ten, twenty years.”

Here is a lovely, summery dessert or, perhaps, with a nice iced tea in the afternoon on the deck. Fresh blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries all top it off perfectly.

Blackberry Basil Panna Cotta 2 c. heavy cream 2 c. half and half ¾ c. sugar 2 envelopes gelatin 2 tsp. grated lemon peel 1 ½ tsp. vanilla Combine the creams and sugar in pan. Sprinkle with gelatin and stand 1 minute. Heat over low, stirring until sugar and gelatin are dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in lemon peel and vanilla. Pour into 12 greased ramekins or custard cups. Cover and refrigerate until set (about 4 hours) To serve, unmold onto dessert plates and garnish with sauce, berries and basil.

2 c. blackberries 1 c. sugar 1 c. blackberry or port wine ¼ c. minced fresh basil 2 Tbsp. cold butter Additional berries and basil to garnish Bring the berries, sugar and wine to a boil, cooking until

thick and reduced to about 1 ¼ cups. Remove from heat, stir in butter and basil. Cool to room temp. As you can see in the photo, I did away with the sauce and served with fresh fruit. I set mint sprigs atop for garnish and added a dollop of dulce de leche for just a hint of caramel flavour to round it all off. A dash of chocolate sauce could work, too. I have been using those silicone muffin/cupcake liner cups to make desserts and other dishes. There is no chance of sticking and everything comes out perfectly. You simply push the cup inside out to remove the contents. • If you are using regular cups, you might want to set them in hot water for a few seconds to loosen the mold. Don’t leave too long in the water, or they will begin to melt and the cream will run onto the plates. And, if you don’t have anything like that to make individual servings, it would be fine as a pudding in a large bowl and simply scooped out to serve. I think this will go well with a July 1st picnic, potluck or barbecue. I plan to try it in a 9x13 pan, unmold and decorate with strawberries to make my traditional Canada Flag cake :) Happy Canada Day! 24l

inSideCRIME Rumsey man sentenced for possession of stolen property Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller A former Rumsey resident has been given a two year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a number of property related offences. Stanley Glodek appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, June 24 for a number of offenses stemming from two separate incidents. On January 6 of this year, as a result of a complaint, RCMP were on their way to interview Glodek when they came across him. He had in his possession break-in instruments including bolt cutters, a reciprocating saw and tin snips. He was placed on probation in April of 2010, which includes a weapons prohibition and to carry his release paperwork. He had in his possession a BB gun and was without his release documents. He pleaded guilty to possession of break-in instruments, possession of a weapon, breach of his release and not having release papers on his person.

From information received that day, police were able to secure a search warrant and executed it on a property the next day. Police discovered a number of stolen items including hand and shop tools and a scooter. He pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. Glodek was in custody since his arrest in January, but was able to secure release on March 17. One of his conditions was that he is to remain in the Calgary area. On March 22, he was arrested in the Rumsey area. He was in possession of a 2005 Ford F350 truck, stolen from Balzac and a stolen licence plate from Calgary. The Crown and defence agreed that Glodek’s time spent in custody awaiting his guilty plea last Friday was an appropriate custodial sentence and agreed on a suspended sentence of two years. Lourie Keller, who was also accused in relation to these incidents, saw her charges dropped.

Bryden to appear July 8 Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Lawrence James Bryden is to make his next appearance in provincial court in Drumheller on July 8. The Drumheller Mail reported that Bryden has been charged with causing damage or injury to an animal and creating a common nuisance under the Criminal Code as well as Animal Pro-

tection Act charges. He did not appear and subsequently a warrant was issued. On Friday, June 24 an agent for Bryden’s council appeared and explained that Bryden’s non-appearance was the result of a miscommunication. The warrant for Bryden was vacated and he is scheduled to appear July 8 with co-accused John Barry Graham.

Rancher fails to meet all conditions for animals return Kyle Smylie| inSide Drumheller

The man charged with animal cruelty after over 300 head of livestock were removed from his East Coulee ranch by the Alberta SPCA has paid a $160,000 court ordered fine for the animal’s return, but has failed to provide adequate fencing at his property. John Barry Graham, who had 200 cattle and 150 horses removed from his property after the ASPCA say they were left in poor conditions, paid the fine on Monday, June 20 at 4:00 p.m. However, Graham failed to meet the requirement of fencing on the property, and his lawyers have been given a one week extension (June 27) to do so, RCMP say. Drumheller RCMP were not available to comment on whether the conditions were met Monday. A Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench ordered the animals could be returned to Graham upon strict conditions, including conditions to safeguard the health and safety of the animals. These conditions include weekly visits by a vet selected by the ASPCA. The animals remain in the care of the ASPCA until the conditions are met.

West Nile virus remains a health concern for all Albertans. Those over the age of 50 are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill when infected with West Nile virus. Your best protection is insect repellent with DEET. Used as directed, DEET has an excellent safety record. Products with lemon eucalyptus oil are effective for shorter periods of time. Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes 11064MA1 are most active.

“I went from training for a marathon to having a three and a half month headache to being off work for almost a year.” – Graham, Medicine Hat, AB West Nile virus survivor

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Swingin’ in the Badlands The Weekender The Drumheller Mail

Avid golfers beware, the golf courses in the Drumheller area can lure you into complacency with their natural beauty and awe-inspiring scenery and then turn around and bite you with challenge and unique terrain. Whether your surroundings be towering coulees or rolling prairies, the golfing experience in the Drumheller area promises a more than memorable time. There are three golf courses within an hour’s drive of Drumheller, each with their own special character and unique challenges that add up to make a terrific round of golf. Dinosaur Golf and Country Club is located just five minutes from downtown Drumheller, west on North Dinosaur Trail, Highway 838. This 18 hole, 6,392 yard course boasts expertly groomed, broad fairways that wind along the tranquil Red Deer River. A couple of ponds bring water hazards into play on the fourth and sixth fairways. The front nine is walkable but

the back nine requires a cart because of its unique valley terrain and plateaus. A close inspection of the hole map for the back nine is well warranted before teeing off. The par five 10th hole presents a particular challenge with its narrow fairway and long yardage. Be sure to direct your tee shot down the middle of the fairway in order to catch a view of the green and set up for a clean approach. Carved out of the hills and coulees, the natural landscape shapes the method of play on the back nine. A few hidden greens pose a particular challenge with an especially tough set up shot. Manager and club pro Scott Westman selects the 149 yard 12th as the signature hole of the course. The green, down in the coulee, is surrounded by hoodoos and hills and the spectacular view from the tee box allows you to see the Badlands for miles down the Drumheller Valley. Dinosaur Golf and Country Club offers a full service clubhouse, tee time reservations are advised. For more information or tee times call the club at (403) 823-5622.

The Dinosaur Golf and Country Club always leaves a lasting impression of its unparalleled landscape. It’s the one course that leaves everyone talking about it. Heading 45 km south of Drumheller on Highway 9 take the road into Rosebud. Cross the bridge over Rosebud Creek and you will come upon the exceptional Akokiniskway Golf Course. This 1,845 yard executive nine hole course is derived from the plains Indians’ description “creek where the roses grow”. The creek is an integral part of this course. The signature 3rd hole fully develops the image of the par 30 course and the fine job that the designers did to incorporate a wide range of natural elements. A full service clubhouse offers meals, refreshments and other services including club and power cart rentals. For more information or tee times phone the pro shop at (403) 677-2250. Just northeast of Drumheller is the Hanna Golf and Country Club. To get there you travel Highway 9 North from Drumheller about 15

kilometres to the Morrin corner, turn right and head East on Highway 9 and travel approximately 50 kilometres to the Town of Hanna. The Hanna Golf and Country Club has eighteen holes and they mixed the new 9 with the old 9 to make an exciting and challenging golf experience. The new 9 is a Les Furber design and has only two par threes. The club also offers a driving range, practice putting greens and a practice bunker for polishing up your short game. Their Les Furber signature hole is number six and demands a combination of power and accuracy as it lays out

up hill and often directly into the prairie wind. Water also presents a challenge on five of the current nine holes. The pro shop has club, power and pull cart rentals. The club house has a seating capacity of 145 indoors with a large deck outdoors that overlooks the first tee and the ninth green. All of the courses offer exciting challenges and breathtaking valley scenery. When hitting the links in Drumheller and Badlands area prepare yourself for alluring views, unmatched fairway and green maintenance and above all an unprecedented great round of golf.

Parliamentary Report

Kevin Sorenson M.P., Crowfoot Happy Canada Day! Members of Parliament are now home in their constituencies and celebrating Canada’s 144th Birthday! Throughout our large riding numerous communities

are organizing events to commemorate Canada Day. My family and I will be in Drumheller, Strathmore, Donalda, and spend the evening in Camrose. I will bring greetings and birthday wishes to everyone on behalf of our Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada. Since the earliest days of our history, Canada has been a land of promise. Today, we celebrate our country’s achievements. All across Canada, our celebration brings us together and strengthens our sense of community. On Canada Day, Canadians young and old teach and learn about the significance of the citizenship we all share. In doing so, communities across our country

are showcasing our symbols; our identities; our traditions; and, the talent of our local artists. As a nation, we have good reason to be proud and to express our pride - loud and clear. We can be proud of the peaceful way we live. Citizens of Canada enjoy freedom. We respect each other - from coast to coast to coast. We benefit from our differences in our large geographic territory, and when we come together, our differences bring us strength. Our great nation was built by previous generations of Canadians. Together, we try to build on Canada’s past achievements. We work to protect Canada’s accomplishments and standards and provide for future

generations of Canadians. Canada was one of the last nations to be affected by the recent global recession. Canada was one of the first nations to emerge from it. In the midst of the economic crisis, many nations envied Canada and the strength and integrity of our economy. In 2011, we have seen Middle Eastern and African nations striving to secure the very core values that Canadians have also fought and died for: Freedom; Democracy; and the rule of law. Canadians have built on these values and created a nation that qualifies to be a member of the G-8 group of nations. We embrace our role working with our allies and partners in the

international community. On Canada Day, we celebrate our remarkable history and the bright outlook for our country’s future. Throughout the country, we have also built prosperous communities that are enriched by the hard work and contributions of our citizens who are ready to meet the challenges of our century. On this memorable day, we join all Canadians and we wish everyone a happy Canada Day! BUYER Morley Blake June 27, 2011 Morley Blake Buyer went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on June 27th, 2011 at the age of 73. Morley leaves to mourn his loving wife Shirley of 51 years, daughter Candace (Randy) and son Cameron (Tracy) as well as his five precious grandchildren whom he dearly loved; Tanner (Chilla), Eric, Tyson and Jenna. Morley is also survived by his brother Daun (Phyllis), sister Nova Olhauser, two sisters-in-law Mildred (Vern) Olhauser and Lillian Moller. All his nieces and nephews were very special to him as were his many good friends. Morley was predeceased by his parents and two brothers-in-laws Ben (Frieda) Schuler and Rudy Moller. As a lifetime member of the Carbon Baptist Church, Morley considered it a privilege to serve for many years as a Moderator Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, and Youth Group Leader. Singing in the choir brought him much joy as he greatly enjoyed singing in regular Sunday Worship and numerous cantatas. Morley was active in the community serving for more than 20 years on the Carbon Community Centre Board, many of those years as Chairman. He was very proud of the community he was born and raised in and assisted where ever and whenever possible. 4-H was a large part of Morley’s entire life right from participating as a member in his youth, then as a leader, on to volunteering for many years of judging and right up to the last few years when he never missed his watching his grandsons Eric and Tyson participate in their own shows. Morley attended Olds College right after high school. His passion for farming quickly became evident when his purebred ranch was also filled with hogs and turkeys at different times. If there was ever a spare moment he could be heard putting his auctioneer skills to work at the local auction market or pitching a sale as a realtor or Arctic Cat Dealer. Most recently Morley could be found cooking up a storm behind the grill of his restaurant Good n Plenty. Morley enjoyed visiting with each one of his guests, finding out where they were from and sharing some good ol’ stories with them. Morley loved children and many had their first taste of ice cream at his restaurant whether their parents knew it or not. A Memorial Celebration will be held at the Carbon Baptist Church on Saturday, July 2nd, 2011 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Carbon Baptist Church Memorial Fund, the Carbon Community Centre or the charity of your choice. Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at www.courtneywintersfuneralhome.ca. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home (403-823-2666) honoured to be entrusted with arrangements. 26c

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Sponsored by

The Drumheller Pure Venom softball team has gone undefeated in the Calgary Minor Softball league playoffs over the weekend and is now guaranteed silver with the prospect of claiming gold. The bantam girls beat both Nosecreek and a South Bow River team 5-3 in two games on June 27, and will be competing for gold on Monday, July 4. If they lose Monday, they have another shot at winning gold on Wednesday, July 6. “One of my favourite games of the season was actually when we lost, and afterwards I heard a couple girls from another team say, ‘We finally beat Drumheller,’” said head coach Brent Sands. “We’re doing very well this year.” The Venom have played 22 games over the two month season, and had only lost two

games over the last stretch of the season. “They’re really gelling, they’ve stepped up a lot since last year. They’re progressing with their throwing and pitching and they're hitting the ball extremely well,” says Sands of the team, who have been forced to travel to Calgary twice a week for games in the league’s second division. The Pure Venom team have been together for just over four years now, and the team has been complimenting and communicating well with each other on the field. After playoffs finish next week, the Venoms will be moving up to the midget division of provincials next weekend. They are stepping up from the bantam level because of personal commitments of a lot of the players. Of provincials, Sands said, “It’ll be a good competition, if they stay stiff and strong they’ll do great.”
