One of the world’s most famous guitarists turns out to be a palaeo nut. Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns and Roses, and who is on a solo tour stopped in at the Royal Tyrrell Museum with a couple of his band mates, Myles Kennedy and Brent Fitz, for a peek. They spent about four and a half hours, Wednesday, at the facility touring the gallery as well as behind the scenes with palaeontologist François Therrien. Leanna Mohan of the museum extended an invitation to Slash via Twitter, and he jumped on the idea. He has already expressed his thanks through the social media site, and with more than 1.7 million followers, his fans are sure to take notice of the Royal Tyrrell Museum. It appears Slash and Therrien got along well, and (inset) the guitarist checked out some of the impressive fossils. photo submitted

Emergency crews rescue lost sisters from Horsethief Canyon inSide | STREETERS Michael James

The world is heading to London, England, to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics, so inSide Drumheller asks: “How will Canada fare this year?”

Chase Kostelecky “I think we’ll get 45 medals. We’ve got some good athletes and they’ll get results.”

Tyson Powell “We’ll get 22 medals. There’s a lot of good competition out there, but we’re still top notch.”

Tracy Kakuk “We have some really good athletes, but I would say we do way better in the Winter Olympics.”

Shanna Kean “22 medals. Hopefully we’ll do good, but I usually just watch the Winter Olympics.”

Joe Castonguay “I think 22 medals. I’ve got a feeling we’ll have a strong showing.”

An afternoon hike through the badlands turned desperate for two young ladies from Drumheller on Wednesday evening. At roughly 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, emergency crews responded to a 911 call from a pair of sisters who had gotten lost in Horsethief Canyon and they were in dire need of help to get out. The sisters, aged 20 and 12, had decided to go for a hike given the nice weather. However, they became lost in the maze-like coulees and ravines of the Badlands. They described their panic after becoming lost. “We tried to find another way out, but we couldn’t find it. Eventually it was too steep to climb and we didn’t have any water,” said the elder sister, who did not wish to be named. The sisters wandered for roughly three hours in search of a way out or a cell phone signal so they could call for help. When they finally got a signal, they called 911. Drumheller

Two sisters were rescued unharmed Wednesday evening after a short hike became a three hour ordeal when the two became lost in Horsethief Canyon. The sisters wandered until they found cell RCMP, the Drumheller Fire Department, and the Munson Fire Department rushed out to Horsethief Canyon to locate the ladies. Boats were called in and the RCMP brought their ATV. The girls were soon located by firefighters and the ATV was low-

a hike and a message to the crews who helped them. “Bring lots of water and something to leave a trail so you can find your way back,” said the elder sister. “And to everyone who came out, thank you so much, it was much appreciated.”

Mayor reacts to East Coulee reader’s water project assessment Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Mayor Terry Yemen was quick to respond to a letter to the editor in this week’s Drumheller Mail. On Monday evening, Margaret English provided The Mail with a letter addressed to Premier Alison Redford on behalf of the Concerned Citizens Delegation of East Coulee. Mayor Yemen has taken issue with many points in her letter. “In regard to the letter to the editor dated July 13; being directly involved in the process, it baffles me as to how misconstrued the facts can get,” said Yemen. The letter states council was proceeding against the wishes of residents of East Coulee in approving a water transmission line at the July 16 Council meeting. “Those officials responsible for this untenable situation obviously do no know what is best for the taxpayers. They do not respect the diversity of the villages, nor do they respect the democratic process,” states the letter. Mayor Yemen said it is simply untrue. The residents of East Coulee did not vote on the installation of transmission line, nor did council approve such a project at last Monday’s Council meeting. “The residents of Lehigh and East Coulee were polled by the Town of Drumheller to seek their opinion on a local improvement tax which would see water being delivered to their residences. The poll, not vote, showed no support for this local improvement

and as a result, the Town has not pursued this project any further,” said Yemen. The Town of Drumheller is proceeding with a line that will run from Cambria to the western edge of East Coulee. This was approved in the Town’s 2012 Capital Plan. The Town has received funding for the project from the provincial Water For Life Program which will pay 90 per cent of the project. East Coulee residents are not being asked for any funding. “Council dealt with second and third reading of a borrowing bylaw which would provide the authority for administration to borrow up to 10 per cent of the water transmission line extension costs. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone because as required by the Municipal Government Act, this bylaw has been advertised in The Drumheller Mail for the past two weeks,” he said. He also takes issue with the statement that the Town of Drumheller is deeply in debt and that East Coulee residents will face “taxation that will destroy the village.” “To suggest that the Town of Drumheller is deeply in debt, again, untrue. Municipal debt servicing limits are set by the provincial government and while Drumheller does have debt, the Town is nowhere near this limit. In fact, the Town is at less than 50 per cent of allowable limits,” said Yemen. “To suggest that the residents of East Coulee are going to face taxes which would destroy

the village is malice and irresponsible and again, not true.” In fact, Yemen is proud of the Town’s efforts to keep taxes manageable. “In 2012, the Town of Drumheller approved a three year budget of a tax increase of 3 per cent.

This increase is there basically to cover the costs of inflation,” said Yemen. “A large number of municipalities in Alberta are very envious of a 3 per cent tax increase.”

Threads of Love helps Haitians in need The Threads of Love Quilt Club has been working away sewing blankets and more to give to those in need. A group of young girls have been learning how they can make a dierence in the lives of those in need. The Threads of Love Quilt Club is donating their hard work to Haiti citizens. The group has been busy for the past few months making blankets, diaper bags, and more for Haitians struggling to recover after the devastating earthquake which shook the country to the ground two years ago. Kim McDonald, as part of a Compassion Canada Mission, is bound for Haiti this week and will be taking along the quilt club’s donation. McDonald has been looking forward to the trip for a long time. “Excited is an understatement,â€? said

McDonald. “I’m taking one of my daughters, Sophia, and we’re bringing one outďŹ t and everything else will be donations. We’re taking about 200 lbs. of donations. It’ll be awesome,â€? The club has also donated close to 50 diaper bags and receiving blankets to other causes, such as the Morgan Jane Project, Christmas Project, and the Slave Lake ďŹ re disaster. The girls have also sewn personal items as well, such as pajamas and table runners. Sandra Gullacher was inspired to start the club in October 2011. The goal of the club was to teach how to sew. “It was part of the church and my son kept saying I had more material at home than Walmart. The girls wanted to learn how to sew. We started with easy projects, like rag

quilts. When we started, most of the girls had never sat at a machine. They’ve gone from not knowing how to do anything to being proďŹ cient. They’re learning skills that aren’t very common anymore,â€? said Gullacher. “We’ve come so far. When we started we could barely do anything,â€? said Isabella McDonald. The girls have become a close knit group over the months and they have been learning more than just sewing during their time with the club. “It’s been a really cool journey for the girls. It’s about self esteem and the girls have really grown. They’re focused in a really positive way and they’re doing positive stu outside of the club as well,â€? said Gullacher.

Visiting from Belgium, Jo Duyck, Frans Van Frausum, Rita Van Frausum, Mia Felix, and Jill Vanderreven travelled to Drumheller to see the dinosaur’s but also everything else the valley has to hold. Visitor numbers have been great this year at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, Atlas Coal Mine Historical Site, and the Homestead Museum. Guests seem to be travelling from further away to see Drumheller and all its beauty. inSide photo by Donella Swan

Drumheller attracting visitors from afar Donella Swan| inSide Drumheller

The summer months are usually a very busy time for the valley. However, this year it seems people are coming from further away. “We’ve been seeing extremely good numbers. Actually over July long weekend, over 50 countries were represented. We had guests from every single province and territory in Canada, 31 states were represented out of the United States, and something really interesting was we had almost as many people from Saskatoon as we did from Red Deer,” said Leanna Mohan, marketing coordinator for the Royal Tyrrell Museum. “We were up five per cent in June, from about 41,050 visitors last year to 43,210 this year.” June was a busy month for the Royal Tyrrell Museum, but July has already been busier. As of July 17, the museum saw 57,513 visitors walk through the front doors. The nice weather Mohan said has been a contributing factor. However, the Calgary Stampede is another big draw for tourists. “With the Stampede gonig on there are just so many more visitors coming to Alberta. After they check out the Stampede they want to see other parts of the province and I think that’s what draws them here,” said Mohan. The Tyrrell isn’t the only museum that has been enjoying the crowds. Atlas Coal Mine National Histoic Site saw a 27 per cent increase in visitors from about 949 visitors last July to around 1,205 this July, and the month isn’t even over yet. “Looking at the crowds coming in, there definitely seems to be more diversity in the guests this year than seen in previous years,” said Linda Digby, executive director at Atlas Coal Mine. The extreme heat put sort of a damper on visitor numbers Digby said. On the hot, sunny days she said they

would see a lot of activity in the morning but by high noon people were searching for somewhere to beat the heat. “I think when the temperature soars people are more apt to go to the spray park and places like that and who could blame them. When the weather softens a bit is when we see more guests, and we are quite happy with the numbers we’ve been seeing this year so far,” said Digby. Over at the Homestead Museum, visitor numbers have been holding steady. “We’ve been seeing around 20 to 40 people per day. There have been many from the States, eastern Canada, and even Europe,”

said Alec Hammond, who is a customer service clerk at the Homestead Museum. Hot or rainy weather usually brings people indoors to see the exhibit said Hammond. Visiting from Belgium, Jo Duyck said they mostly came for the dinosaurs but were amazed at everything the valley had to offer once they arrived. “We have a lot to see. I don’t know if we will be able to do it all in one day but we're sure going to try,” said

Sooo… Where ya from? Where are you from? Yakima, Washington. It’s about 2 hours east of Seattle. What brings you to Drumheller? Our grandparents (Ted and Pam Earl) live here and our mom (Jackie) grew up here. We came here two years ago to visit. What do you like to do when you come to visit Grandma and Grandpa? Float down the Red Deer River. We’ve done it four times since we’ve been here! What did your mom tell you to do when you got to Drumheller? She said, “do not annoy your grandparents.”

Who is the best fisherman, Grandma or Grandpa? Grandpa. What is your favourite food Grandma cooks? Spaghetti. If someone from Drumheller went to Yakima, what would they see? They should go to the Family Fun Centre where they have bumper boats, mini golf, and arcades. It’s also a huge fruit area for cherries, apples, and grapes. Come Tuesday, July 31, a volunteer jury of trained professionals from Communities in Bloom (CIB) will make their way to Drumheller. Touring the valley, these trained judges will be evaluating the community green spaces on eight key criteria: tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape, turf and groundcovers, floral displays and community involvement. “They will drive all over town and judge on how we take care of everything from greenspaces, tree placement to flower displays,” said Trish Parker, president of Drumheller Communities in Bloom. Municipal, private, corporate and institutional sectors, and citizens will all be considered in the judging process. CIB is a non-profit organization, which is committed to

fostering community pride, environmental responsibility and civic beautification. Through community involvement and the challenge of a national program, CIB is focusing on the value and promotion of green spaces within municipalities. “It is important for communities to get involved with Communities in Bloom because it helps us to applaud those who give back to the community and to let us know where we can improve,” said Parker. Established under the guidance of Britain in Bloom, CIB held its first edition in 1995. Twenty nine communities were honoured at the awards ceremony on Parliament Hill in the first year. The program now includes hundreds of communities across the country. “We have been involved since 2002 and in that time, I have seen great improvements. Since we are a tourist town, and have so much to show case, it is

important to keep things tidy and well cared for,” said Parker. The judges will arrive in Drumheller at 10 a.m. for a reception at Town Hall. Judging will begin following the reception. Brendan Casement and Colin Carmichael will be representing CIB as judges this year.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

“Anne inspired quilts wanted at Rosebud submitted The Weekender

In honour of its summer musical, Anne of Green Gables, Rosebud Theatre is looking for quilt blocks inspired by Canada’s favourite redhead – Anne Shirley. And quilters who submit these blocks have a chance to win prizes. Mark Lewandowski, marketing coordinator for Rosebud Theatre, says the idea of a quilt contest took a little doing.

QUOTE

“We didn’t want just a standard log cabin or other basic pattern to be submitted. We wanted a direct connection with the show Mark Lewandowski

“Last summer, we held a writing contest in honour of Jake & the Kid by W.O. Mitchell and loved how it engaged our patronage. This year, we wanted to keep the tradition of a summer contest. Although Anne is ripe for storytelling, we struggled to come up with a good angle. At some point in the meeting, someone suggested displaying quilts in Rosebud, and the idea of a quilt contest just jumped to the front. Because making a full quilt is time consuming, participants are asked to

create a 12-½â€? square quilt block, using only cotton fabric, something most quilters can do in a day. The trick is - it needs to be inspired by Anne. “We didn’t want just a standard log cabin or other basic pattern to be submitted. We wanted a direct connection with the show,â€? says Lewandowski. “We’re interested in how people are aected by Anne of Green Gables, whether it’s the books, the play, the movies or TV show, or even just that imaginative and creative girl herself.â€? The submitted blocks will be judged by a panel of quilters local to Rosebud. The top ten will then be entered into a draw for some prizes. “When investigating quilt contests,â€? Lewandowski explains, “we realized so much of the judging has to do with the whole quilt, how the blocks interact, how the colours work, etc. So an individual block is more diďŹƒcult to assess. “We decided we could probably come up with the ten best blocks based on if the block conforms to the entry criteria, on its workmanship, and on how it is inspired by Anne. Each of these ten blocks will then receive a metre of specialty fabric. These winners will also be entered into a draw for more prizes, including tickets to an upcoming Rosebud Theatre show.â€? The contest, which began June 15, ends August 11.

Blocks can be mailed in, or dropped o in Rosebud. And what will become of the blocks after the contest? “We thought of that. Last year we ended up with over 60 story entries which we then made into a book. We have no idea whether we’ll see six or 60 blocks. After the contest is over, we’re going to have a good, oldfashioned quilting bee and make some quilts out of them. We’ll then auction them o at dierent events as a fundraiser for our parent organization, Rosebud Centre of the Arts.â€? “We’re very excited about this contest, and so far the quilters we’ve talked to Rosebud Theatre is hosting a contest for “Anne" inspired quilt blocks. think it’s a great idea.â€? submittted

Call us at 403-823-2580 or email news @insidedrumheller.com What could be cooler than cruising the valley in “Papa’s cool car.” Steven McLachlan of Edmonton is holidaying with his children and grandchildren, and they brought along his 1949 Oldsmobile 98 Fastback. Originally an Arizona car, he bought it about a year ago in Kelowna. An Olds 307 C.I. V8, breathing through a Rochester Quadrajet carb, powers the car. Sitting on air shocks he said the car cruises along nicely on the highway, and for McLachlan it is a “go” car, not a show car. He uses it to “go” to the grocery store and “go” on holidays, and is enjoyed more on the road than in the garage.

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Inmate assaulted at Drumheller institution Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Violence at the Drumheller Institution last week has left one inmate in the hospital. At roughly 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, an inmate was assaulted by a fellow inmate at the Drumheller Institution. The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and taken to an outside hospital. In a press release from Correctional Services Canada (CSC), the extent of the injuries was described as unknown, but the victim was reported in stable condition. No other staff or other inmates were injured during the

incident. The aggressor has been identified and action taken. “The CSC is investigating the incident with the RCMP right now,” said Dawn Bancroft, from chief administrative services of CSC. The institution is not reported to have any changes to its normal routine. CSC is reviewing the incident to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents. “When something like this happens, if it’s a violent incident, preventing and controlling violence is an ongoing concern,” said Bancroft. “We are always working to review these incidents and make our department better.”

Hey Romeo launches third CD another nonstop summer for Hey Romeo. Fresh off the stage at the The band, which features Calgary Stampede and with Rob Shapiro of Drumheller a new album in stores, it is on keyboards, guitarist Darren Gusnowsky and lead vocalist Stacie Roper, once again rocked Nashville North at the Calgary Stampede, which was (Jive) celebrating its centennial. Dance Lessons “It was packed and we were thankful to be 6 weeks beginning Thursday, August 2 included in the celebration, at 7 p.m. the whole committee did an amazing job of putting Couples or Singles top notch Canadian talent Welcome on stage,” Shapiro told The $5.00 per class Mail. Taught by Colin Wills, Timing for the band Professional Country couldn’t be more perfect as Swing Instructor just three weeks ago they Held at released their third album carol todor dance school called Twist of Fate. Its first Call (403) 823-4377 single Jump Back hit the to register or message radio on May 3 and a video Carol on Facebook w29c30m for the same track debuted inSide Drumheller

on CMT June 12. It just hit 31 on the charts. “We wrote this album over about a year and it was accelerated after we won the 2011 CCMA Group of the Year in September,” said Shapiro. “Our group wanted new material out

ASAP, but some things you just can’t rush as you have to have the best songs you can write or get your hands on.” This was a feat for the hard working band that seems to be constantly in front of an audience.

“Since January of this year, I think we’ve been home less than a month. Between the three weeks we spent in Nashville writing and recording, then a month in Calgary finishing the recording and then a week later going on a cross Canada tour with Gord Bamford,” said Shapiro.

“We all love making albums, you just finish one and you're thinking of the next one...really, writing songs and recording is truly rewarding.”

“We all love making albums, you just finish one and you’re thinking of the next one really...writing songs and recording is truly rewarding,” he said. He describes the sound of the band as being more modern than their previous offerings, although the essence of the band’s vocals remain intact. He said there is a good balance of radio friendly tunes as well as what he calls “album cuts,” not exactly songs you would hear on the radio, but strong songs. Hey Romeo has a couple days to rest after the Stampede before they head back out on the road to perform at Strathmore Heritage days. Shapiro says there are plans to play in Delia in April, and they are working on a local date. “Also, we’ve been aching to make some noise in the brand new facility as I’ve heard its]'s amazing. We’ve been working on the town to bring us in."

Welcome to the

Rockyford Rodeo Age: 45. Employer: The Canadian Badlands Passion Play. Occupation: I’m a singer, playwright, actor, painter, and sculptor, but I also do construction. Who are you playing in the show this year? I play the head temple guard. He’s basically the muscle for the Pharisees. He almost becomes a believer in Jesus as the Messiah, but then he loses his job over it. To earn his way back, he has to become the enforcer again. How long have you been involved with the Passion Play? I was here when I was a student in Rosebud, so I was about 21 or 22 years old. In ‘97 and ‘98 I played Jesus. I took a break for quite awhile and went to the west coast. When did you come to Drumheller? I jumped on my motorcycle last year in April, came here, and have been working here ever since. Dream job? I think I’m doing it. This is as close to the dream as it gets for me, because I’m building, I do a little design, I get to be in the show, and there’s lots of people around. Where are you from originally? I grew up on a farm near

Linden, Alberta. What do you like most about Drumheller? The summer, I love small towns, and there are really good people in Drumheller. If you could hang out with anyone, who it be? Leonardo da Vinci. I would want to hear his opinion on all sorts of stuff. What is your most memorable childhood toy? Lego, it was a new toy every day. We always built Lego towers to see who could build the highest one. Any favourite movies/TV shows? Moulin Rouge, Lord of the Rings, Au Chocolat, Ballroom Dancing, Mad Max, and Star Wars. I like Sci-fi. For TV, I liked Dexter, but then it got ridiculous. What would be your theme song? I’ve never really thought about it. How about Dreamer by Supertramp, or The Logical Song. If you had your own band, what instrument would you play? I’ve played keyboard since I was 8. I usually play blues, jazz, folk blues, or ballads. Any words of wisdom? Just because you don’t believe doesn’t mean it’s not true, or

It was a beautiful morning. The sky was bright, the air warm, the fish were biting, and it was a chance to have a guys day out. Drumheller senior men got together on Thursday morning to do some fishing at Michichi Reservoir. The shore was lined with men casting lines, baiting hooks, and bonding in a way that only spending time fishing can do. “It’s a chance for the guys to get out of town and for some it’s been years since they’ve fished. We thought it would be nice to get them out and do something they used to enjoy,” said Rose Poulsen, seniors coordinator with the Town of Drumheller. The men sat on the shore fishing or just taking in the beautiful weather and scenery. “It’s good. It’s a very nice, quiet place to be. I’d like to come out again,” said Eugene Montgomery, who had fished quite a bit at Michichi in his youth. The idea came when on Mother’s Day, Poulsen organized an event for the ladies. When Father’s Day rolled around, they weren’t able to do anything with the guys quite yet.

“I did a Mother’s Day tea for the ladies and we weren’t able to do anything for the guys. I promised them something, so I asked them what they most like to do and they said fishing,” said Poulsen. Senior men from all over Drumheller, including Sunshine and Hillview Lodges, Pioneer Trail Society, and those living on their own came out for the day. The only restriction was no ladies, it was boys day. “It’s not necessarily about fishing, it’s about the boys hanging out together,” said Marcel Augey, activities coordinator at Sunshine Lodge. It is hoped the trip will lead to more similar activities in the future. “If it’s a success, we’re considering doing other trips for anyone. One of the seniors said he would rather go golfing, so we’re already talking about golfing in August. The possibilities are endless. It’s about getting out and having some fun,” said Poulsen. “This could spawn more for next year, or something completely different,” said Augey. For those who came out, the day will be one to remember. “We roasted hot dogs, caught some fish, and told a few fish stories,” said Poulsen. “It was fun!”
