Atlas receives federal grant boost Thursday Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

The Atlas Coal Mine in East Coulee received a federal boost on Thursday when Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson announced $110,000 was awarded for the completion of several projects. With this money, the Atlas may go ahead with beginning work on the Blacksmith Shop, Rotary Dump, and opening the #3 mine entry. “We are in the planning stages,” explains the Atlas’ Executive Director, Linda Digby. “The job is very hard logistically.” With the rugged terrain that makes the site special, it also makes construction work difficult and hard to find contractors. “As with everything we do, it has to be done historically. If we add little changes that aren’t accurate, gradually the site would lose authenticity.” This money, from the National Historic Sites CostSharing Program, was awarded to the mine because visitation to one site in the valley increases money earned by all businesses. “If we can have people stay for two or three days, that is increased money spent elsewhere in town, not just the Atlas,” said Digby to a crowd of about 50 gathered at the foot of the mine tipple. “It helps tourism throughout the valley,” said Member of Parliament Kevin Soren-

I would like to make a few comments on the Dinosaur hunting boat trip described in the July 16 issue of inSide Drumheller. It would appear that for as much preparation that went into organizing this adventure, some vital details were ignored which would have made it a much more successful trek than it was, barring the leader of the expedition getting sick. I worked at the National

son. “The government understands the potential sites like these have. Our cost-sharing program is an interesting tool.” The Atlas was approved the money last year, but due to an

ers past who built our town,” says Digby. “Parks and historic sites represent the best Canada has to offer. It gives us a sense of community, place, and pride,” said Sorenson. Visitation to the mine has

Museum in Ottawa for several years where I befriended Charlie Sternberg. Being a history buff, I often had conversations with him about the “good old days”. I too was puzzled by their use of such a large vessel as a scow to float down the Red Deer. Charlie told me that at the time, before the Dickson Dam and before large cities sucked so much water out of the river, the level would have been much higher, therefore the river was deeper. One only has to go to McMullen to look at the location of the old levee when the river was higher to see that it must have been about 3 meters deeper than today. This would imply that indeed Barnum Brown and the Sternbergs were able to do what they said they did. As for piloting the scow,

one must remember that in the early 1910’s human and horse powered vehicles were the order of the day, unlike today where everything is mechanized. Those people had better skills manipulating such vessels than we do now. Even at that, Sternberg often mentioned the difficulties steering the scows and poling was often used, especially when attempting to land somewhere. I was told that Mr. Tanke complained that when they dropped anchor, the tug of the anchor line nearly ripped the back of the scow. It is obvious from this remark that they had the anchor at the wrong end of the boat. When one looks at any ship in port, one sees that the main anchor is at the front. Sometimes there are two anchors, one on each side.

This way when the anchor or anchors are dropped, they form a “V” shaped “sac” into which the vessel is snared. The tearing at the aft does not happen is such a case ... the single anchor is normally used when landing and the side of the bank acts as the second anchor. Anyway, if this venture is attempted again, perhaps some of those considerations will be observed and it will go better.

The weather may have hindered a few outdoor events this summer, but there was one show it spared, and this was the 2010 Canadian Badlands Passion Play. In fact, the play received a record attendance this year. “We had record attendance with 12,200 people attending,” artistic director Randall Wiebe told inSide Drumheller. “We would probably have had even more if it hadn’t been a bit rainy beforehand but in terms of the play itself, the weather was absolutely wonderful.” The show, which has run for 18 years now, saw quite a few changes this year, such as some major revisions to some of the scenes, a large change in the costumes, and the addition of the Baptismal pool. “I think the play looks more beautiful than ever,” said Wiebe, “and in terms of the play itself, it was clear, the transitions were faster,

cleaner and the play, as far as I am concerned, transitioned extremely well from scene to scene and the story itself was clear.” Wiebe is so content with this particular production that when asked if there was anything he was particularly pleased with this year, his answer was “Everything! That was my response many times over… There’s always room for improvement, but I was extremely pleased.” As well as the set, costumes and production, the

play comes alive thanks to hundreds of actors and volunteers. “We had the most excellent team of staff and volunteers - they worked together in harmony, they were just amazing volunteers,” said Wiebe. Now that the 2010 production is over, minds are already thinking about the future. “Next year, it may in fact be a whole new play, we are contemplating that, but it is too early to speak about it,” said Wiebe.

Jenn Beaupre to share new and old songs Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Local followers of the career of Jenn Beaupre will have another chance in the near future to see and hear her on the stage doing what she does best. Last time inSide Drumheller caught up with Beaupre, she completed a stint with the Moscow Ballet and was getting ready to perform at the Vancouver Olympics. Today she is set to take centre stage at the University of Calgary Theatre. “My tickets just went up on Ticketmaster on Saturday for a show October 7,â€? Beaupre said. “ It is a 500-seat theatre, so it’s ambitious.â€? In 2008, Beaupre released her most recent CD, Lullabies for Grown-ups, and has been working to support it. This year she breathed new life into some of the tracks after heading to Kentucky to re-record. 97.7 FM Radio in Calgary funded the trip. “Some of the songs are the same, and there are a few new ones,â€? said Beaupre. “It’s a little more mellow. The tempos are down but it is crisper and cleaner.â€? Another exciting development, she tells inSide Drumheller, is she shot her ďŹ rst video. “I have two dancers who are just beautiful. They have both been involved is So You Think You Can Dance Canada and they did a lyrical dance to one of my tunes called 'What If'," said Beaupre, adding while it is an older song in her repertoire, it was one she re-worked with Duane Lundy of Shangri-la Productions in Lexington, Kentucky. “It’s a really simple piano vocal,â€? she said. She hopes to include the video as part of her performance in October. She envisions live dancers on stage as she performs while the video plays as a backdrop. She also hopes to invite some of the artists she has worked with during her career, so the show has a cosy atmosphere of friendship. Her recent experiences of recording and the shooting of her video have moved Beaupre artistically to a point that she has begun to start writing again. This excites her and she is about to embark on an ambitious direction with her music. She said this might be the last “albumâ€? for her for quite some time. Because the music industry has been moving towards singles, she is following suit. “Hopefully I’m going to be releasing a new song every two months, be it through

iTunes or the internet,â€? she said. “It seems to me the industry is moving towards singles and really quick turnaround. People can look forward to hearing new stu

very soon. Those wanting to learn more about what Beaupre is up to can go to www.jennbeaupre.com or visit her Facebook page.

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

I don’t think too many people have a problem with paying someone for work well done. I don’t think too many people have a problem paying bonus to someone who performs above and beyond what is expected. No, the problem arises when a bonus is paid to someone already being paid close to half a million dollars in salary, and then performing well below expectation. The subject of discussion is the $149,00 in bonus (and other beneďŹ ts) paid to Stephen Duckett the CEO of Alberta Health Services. In total, the man received $744,000 in bonuses and salary, yet waiting times for surgery grew longer, he ran a huge deďŹ cit, and bungled the swine u vaccination program. In actuality the man only received about $76,000 in real bonus pay, but that was only because he met just half of his set targets. Who decides this stu? He sets his own targets (Would you set a target you didn’t think you could reach?) and when he fails to reach them, he still gets a big fat bonus that would constitute a year’s salary for a lot of Albertans. Who are the people who write up these contracts? Of course there are those in government who try to justify such obscenities. Treasury Board president Lloyd Snelgrove says that we ought not to react too strongly to these bonuses, that to have the best health care system costs money; that good management costs money; that we must pay fair wages to attract talent to the health care system. I can’t disagree too strongly with Mr. Snelgrove, but I think it’s just a little scary to have him think that way-he’s the guy with the reins on the money wagon! Albertans don’t mind paying a fair day’s wage for a fair day's work, but have we got the best health care system (ask your uncle, who’s been waiting for hip surgery for 18 months, or the senior who spent six hours lying on a gurney in a hallway while waiting for a room). Good management costs money. Good management doesn’t need huge deďŹ cits with no improvements to show for it. Is the “talentâ€? we went out of country to buy worth what we paid for it? I’d like to know who started all this bonus business in the ďŹ rst place, and should not the reaching of only half one’s goals not result in one losing half of one’s wage? I mean, if he receives a huge bonus for reaching his goals, why not the complete reverse for not meeting them? He gets paid a huge salary to do the work. When he fails to do all the work, he gets a bonus. What kind of deal is that?

The Calgary Stampede always brings out those opposed to it, and they have a right to be, but if you don’t like it, don’t go. It’s been there for almost a hundred years, and will probably endure another hundred. The Stampede started as a rodeo and agricultural fair, and is billed as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earthâ€?. People go in droves to watch the rodeo, the grandstand show, and the chuckwagon races. It’s the ďŹ rst and last of those that the animal rights activists come out against. They rail against the inhumane use of animals to entertain us. They deride calf roping, bronc riding and especially the chuckwagon races. Everytime an animal dies, there is an out cry to halt the rodeo and the races. This of course is absolute foolishness, in that the cowboys involved in any of these events are as much at risk as the animals, maybe more. The problem with an animal, such as a race horse, is that it has twice the chance of breaking a leg as it has twice as many as the guy riding it, and when its leg is broken the chance of rehabilitation is almost nil. How do you tell a horse to “stay o it for a few weeksâ€?, or how do you teach a horse to use crutches, or remain in a wheelchair? Here is a comment (insane as it is) from a spokeswoman of the Calgary Humane Society about the Calgary Stampede: “We have nothing against the Stampede, it’s the rodeo events that we are fundamentally opposed to.â€? They have nothing against the Stampede except for the rodeo events? She might just as well have said “We have nothing against wind energy, it’s the wind turbines that we are fundamentally opposed to.â€? It is after all, the same thing: no rodeo events, no Stampede; no wind turbines, no harnessing the wind for energy. The woman is daft.

Delectable rhubarb pie reason alone to visit East Coulee Biting into hand picked and hand made rhubarb pie has probably been the highlight of this writer’s week. The $3 slice of heaven may be worth a daily trip to the Old School Cafe in the East Coulee School Museum, where Ruth Digby, 18, is offering a delectable alternative with a quick wholesome bite in the tourist haven. Once a classroom, the cafe is creating a buzz among hungry visitors to the Atlas Coal Mine and the school museum who look to bring their tykes for a bite to eat in the village. “I love it,” says Digby, who has taken complete management of the restaurant which opened for the first time in four years this summer. “Before, parents visiting the

mine or museum would stop to ask if there was something to eat in town, but with only a bar around, I would have to send them back to (Drumheller).”

QUOTE

Kyle Smylie The Weekender

“I’ve had someone tell me it tastes like I’d been baking for 50 years... It’s only been 17 or something like that.” Ruth Digby

The Old School Cafe offers a tasty reason to get visitors inside the museum. “They come in for the food and say it’s such a cool building,” says Ruth. “The cafe used to be the epicenter of town, a place where people came to have a coffee and talk. I’d like bring it to a place where it can run without

me.” Along with the desserts, the cafe offers sandwiches: the Atlas Roast Beef Sandwich, B.L.T.’s, Hoodoo Dogs, Miner’s Minor (grilled cheese), Peanut Butter Pony sandwich, floats, and baking. All home made, of course. The rhubarb for the pie is picked down the street from historic rhubarb patches that were once a staple food for hungry miners working at the Atlas. “I’ve had someone tell me it tastes like I’d been baking for 50 years... It’s only been 17 or something like that,” she laughs. Maybe it’s the decade old rhubarb plants that give the pie its old time taste. Or maybe it’s just the amazing baking skills of an East Coulee resident dedicated to keeping her home alive. Happy 10th Birthday to the World's Largest Dinosaur!!

Ruth Digby, 18, has taken over at the Old School Cafe inside East Coulee’s School Museum, offering wonderful meals for tourists and visitors from Drumheller alike. More than worth a trip out.

Avid golfers beware, the golf courses in the Drumheller area can lure you into complacency with their natural beauty and aweinspiring scenery and then turn around and bite you with challenge and unique terrain. Whether your surroundings be towering coulees or rolling prairies the golfing experience in the Drumheller area promises a more than memorable time. There are three golf courses within an hour’s drive of Drumheller each with their own special character and unique challenges that add up to make a terrific round of golf. Dinosaur Golf and Country Club is located just five minutes from downtown Drumheller, west on North Dinosaur Trail, Highway 838. This 18 hole, 6,392 yard course boasts expertly groomed, broad fairways that wind along the tranquil Red Deer River. A couple of ponds bring water hazards into play on the fourth and sixth fairways. The front nine is walkable but the back nine requires a cart because of its unique valley terrain and plateaus. A close inspection of the hole map for the back nine is well warranted before teeing off. The par five 10th hole presents a particular challenge with its narrow fairway and long yardage. Be sure to direct your tee shot down the middle of the fairway in order to catch a view of the green and set up for a clean approach. Carved out of the hills and coulees, the natural landscape shapes Happy 10th Birthday to the World's Largest Dinosaur!!

Special Educational Programs are available for pre-booked groups.

the method of play on the back nine. A few hidden greens pose a particular challenge with an especially tough set up shot. Manager and club pro Scott Westman selects the 149 yard 12th

as the signature hole of the course. The green, down in the coulee is surrounded by hoodoos and hills and the spectacular view from the tee box allows you to see the Badlands for miles down the Drumheller Valley Dinosaur Golf and Country Club offers a full service clubhouse, tee time reservations are advised. For more information or tee times call the club at (403) 823-5622. The Dinosaur Golf and Country Club always leaves a lasting impression of its unparalleled landscape. It’s the one course that leaves everyone talking about it. Heading 45 km south of Drumheller on Highway 9 take the road into Rosebud. Cross the bridge over Rosebud Creek and you will come upon the exceptional Akokiniskway Golf Course. This 1,845 yard executive nine hole course is derived from the plains Indians’ description “creek where the roses grow”. The creek is an integral part of this course. The signature 3rd hole fully develops the image of the par 30 course and the fine job that the designers did to incorporate a wide range of natural elements.

A full service clubhouse offers meals, refreshments and other services including club and power cart rentals. For more information or tee times phone the pro shop at (403) 677-2250. J u s t northeast of Drumheller is the Hanna Golf and Country Club. To get there you travel Highway 9 North from Drumheller about 15 kilometres to the Morrin corner, turn right and head East on Highway 9 and travel approximately 50 kilometres to the Town of Hanna. The Hanna Golf and Country Club has eighteen holes and they mixed the new 9 with the old 9 to make an exciting and challenging golf experience. The new 9 is a Les Furber design and has only two par threes. The club also offers a driving range, practice putting greens and a practice bunker for polishing up your short game. Their Les Furber signature hole is number six and demands a combination of power and accuracy as it lays out up hill and often directly into the prairie wind. Water also presents a challenge on five of the current nine holes. The pro shop has club, power and pull cart rentals. The club house has a seating capacity of 145 indoors with a large deck outdoors that overlooks the first tee and the ninth green. All of the courses offer exciting challenges and breathtaking Valley scenery. When hitting the links in Drumheller and Badlands area prepare yourself for alluring views, unmatched fairway and green maintenance and above all an unprecedented great round of golf.

The Weekender 2010 - Page 11

Homestead Museum’s past treasures can be found through scavenger hunt Weekender

The Homestead Museum oers a very imaginative way to discover the treasures from the past on display under its dome: with a scavenger hunt. Available in both English and French, the hunt will get players to seek items located in 17 dierent sections of the museum. French native Gilles Danis, of the museum, came up with the idea and originally the hunt was started to entertain the school groups that visited the museum. Since last year, it is now available to the public, and provides plenty of fun for children and adults alike. Museum employee Chris HadďŹ eld explained to the Weekender that the scavenger hunt has proved

very popular, giving parents a chance to take their time looking around the museum while their children have fun hunting around or doing the hunt as a family. Adults enjoy the hunt as well. “Everybody loves to test themselves. Before I realized we had an answer sheet, I have had a few adults actually leave me their email address saying, ‘would you check how I did and let me know.’

Having it available in French too is a bonus, as the museum gets quite a few French speaking visitors. “We have had a lot of French speaking visitors this year; sometimes they appreciate a little bit of their own mother tongue.â€? Those not uent in French can still try it out in that language as the museum sta is more than happy to help out.

INSIDE ADVERTORIAL

Quadra Manor oers great home investment There is a new opportunity for Drumhellerites who are interested in entering the homeowner’s market, and want to begin building some equity. Recently the Quadra Manor on 11 Avenue S.E in Drumheller has gone through a condominium conversion, and there are 20 units now listed for sale. For between about $110,000 and $130,000, residents can quit paying rent and begin paying themselves by buying a unit. To put into perspective, at a modest interest rate for between $600 and $700 a month a person can own their own unit.

“The key thing is aordability,â€? said Gary Chambers of Century 21 Power Realty, the company listing the properties. “With the interest rates the way they are, and the fact there is very little vacancy in town, it’s a good option.â€? Currently the units that are for sale are occupied with tenants. Chambers says this is a great opportunity for those living in the units. “They can secure the property they are already staying in. The fact they can begin to get some equity in the property they are living in, and plan to live in, makes good sense.â€? He adds there are clients living in the complex who have shown interest in pur-

chasing in the Quadra Manor. “They are the only condos in Drumheller under the $140,000 mark. The square footage is good, and there are two comfortable bedrooms in some, and one bedroom in some that are a lot lower in price, so it is an aordable option for people as a ďŹ rst step to ownership,â€? he said. Current owner of the building Bill Henderson is excited by the changes. He says for the price, there are deďŹ nite advantages in buying a condominium suite. “If you look at the pricing, for someone to get into the market to buy a little house, compared to buying a suite, our building is a completely renovated, well kept place. There is one roof and one boiler,â€? said Henderson. “If

you bought a little house for the same price range, you are buying something you may have to re-roof, or re-side, or the foundation may be cracked.

“If you look at the pricing, for someone to get into the market to buy a little house, compared to buying a suite, our building is a completely renovated, well kept place. Bill Henderson

“Getting into a house is just a trap for some people because they just can’t aord it. They can aord the house, they can’t aord the upkeep.â€? He says the management is proactive. “We are good landlords, we

manage everything so there is no delayed maintenance. Everything is brought up to snu,â€? he said, adding another advantage is pride of ownership. “You are no longer renting, you own your suite and you can do exactly what you want with it,â€? said Henderson. Chambers says because the building is managed, it is a turnkey option for someone who would be interested in purchasing an investment property. “It is a simple investment option,â€? said Chambers. "Because the building is managed, many of the pitfalls of taking care of a property for a tenant are taken care of.â€? Local artist swipes World Body Painting Championship title Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

Local resident face and body painter Lucie Brouillard can relax for a while now, she has finally achieved a long time ambition. On Sunday, July 18, in Austria, she became the World Champion Body Painter in the brush/sponge category, a title that had eluded her for the past three years, coming third place on each of her attempts. “I don’t know, I felt very confident this year. That’s the one I wanted. So it’s all done. I have the feeling it is done now,” she told inSide Drumheller. When Brouillard featured in our February, 26 edition of inSide Drumheller, she had just come back from Las Vegas, where she had won the first North America Body Painting Championship and brought home her 13th award at top championships. She set off for Austria determined this was going to be her year, working with the same model as she painted in Las Vegas, Viktoria Law. “When we won in Vegas, we collaborated very well together, we get along and I like her be-

cause she has, in my eyes, the perfect body for painting. The feeling of winning as well creates a great bond. She has been doing this for seven years and has never won the first place, so for her, too, it was really nice,” said Brouillard. Good choice, some might say, as models were affected by the heat in Austria, in the high 30s everyday. “I was lucky because my model was half Asian so she didn’t sweat as much as the other models. Working in this heat becomes quite a challenge,” she explained, adding many models fainted during the contest. While body painters could work in teams of two, and for each theme were allocated six hours to paint their model, Brouillard decided to do it alone, and that got her a new nickname: “The Painting Machine”. The themes for the painting this year were “Sub Cultures“ and “Sources of Power” and Brouillard won by nine points in the brush/sponge body painting category. “The competition was close,” she said, “There was a lot of good quality work there.” At the World Championship

this year, Brouillard slid down one place in the face painting category, coming second. “Actually, I was happy to get second, it gives room for another person. A Mexican artist won first place. She really did a beautiful piece.” With the world title for body painting under her arm, Brouillard is now concentrating on her longer term plans: to teach body painting at an international level. “It’s looking good. So far, I am booked as an instructor in Brazil in January, and I am going to Australia to teach and to judge a competition in February. And that all came in the last week, before I got this title... My aim is to be a good instructor, enough that people really want me and I’ll say, ‘Okay, I’ll go, but you don’t need to pay me, just pay the fare for me and my family [her partner and her two children]. That’s my big plan, so I can bring my family with me to visit the world.” Brouillard said she will not be entering the competition next year. “You need to give the chance to other people. I have had everything I wanted, now I just want to teach. I am happy, I got my wish.”

Local resident Lucie Brouillard (left) and her model, Viktoria Law won the World Body Painting Championship in brush/sponge category in Austria on Sunday, July 18. For the Sub Culture theme, photo above, Brouillard chose to talk about the Aztec civilization. “Because they did not choose to become a subculture, it was out of necessity because they got conquered by the Spanish in the 1500s. When people talk about subculture, it usually refers to a group who wish to get out of society and become a marginal group. I thought I felt it could be stretched to a sadder point of view, when you have a great civilization like that that got totally crushed.” photo submitted

For the Sources of Power theme, photo above, Brouillard used the four elements, air, water, earth and sun, on the front of the model. During her presentation, she explained how those powers are abused and gave a solution on the back of the model, where she had painted a family of three, the woman being heavily pregnant. “It’s love – if you fall in love, very often you have a need to have children, once you have them, the love you feel for them and give them is so humongous and immeasurable and you have that desire to want them to live... you are not egotistical as you were. Because of this love for them, then I think that there is a hope that we will change our habits of consumption, because we want a future for them... And so we can collaborate with these elements instead of abusing them because very soon they will turn back on us and start attacking us.” photos submitted
