One of the more prominent dinosaurs in downtown Drumheller was getting a new look this week by students of artist Vicki Myers who are participating in her Art and Science Day Camp. Earlier this week they were busy working on designs and on Wednesday morning they picked up their paintbrushes and rollers and began repainting “Hollywood” the triceratops in front of the Napier Theatre. Finishing off the base coat are (l-r) Erik Brosch, Andi Calon, Sarah Acorn, Vicki Myers and Rebecca Brosch.

OPINION

Community mourns loss of Jerry Brett Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller man known for his passion for family and soccer died Tuesday in Seaside Oregon. Jerry Brett, 53, was on a holiday on the west coast of the United States and was at the beach with family. According to Seaside officials, at 5:22 p.m., he had gone underwater. He was pulled from the water about 10 minutes later three blocks from where he was last seen. Emergency officials were not able to revive Brett. Brett was a development officer with the

Town of Drumheller before taking a position at Kneehill County where he was director of planning and protective services. Those who worked with him and who he dealt with describe him as jovial and very professional. He was past president of the Alberta Development Officers Association. Bob Long, Reeve of Kneehill County knew Brett before he came to be employed by the county and considers him a good friend. “He was a very special person and like I said ‘you will be able to replace the planner, but you will never, ever be able to replace Jerry,’”

Jerry Brett… passes away

said Long. Brett had a passion for soccer and was involved as a volunteer and coach with the Drumheller Mi-

nor Soccer Association for many years. He was a wealth of information on the subject and this year made it back on the pitch to play in the Drumheller adult coed league. Born in England he was a passionate fan of the Tottenham Hot Spur. Part of his recent trip to the Pacific Northwest was to see his favourite team take on the Seattle Sounders on July 19. Tom Dooley knew Brett well through soccer and coaching. They also played together on the same team as adults.

Often family and soccer overlapped. Dooley coached Brett’s son Nicholas on a team that won the U18 provincial championship. A few years later, Nicholas passed away. Dooley noted that after each game this year Brett played, he would go to a bench dedicated to Nicholas, and sit and reflect. “He loved his family and he was a good friend,” said Dooley.

are WHO you? Martha Chambers

Birthdate: March 22. Occupation: I teach playschool two times a week and work at the pool in Drumheller occasionally. How long have you been with those jobs? I’ve worked at the pool fifteen years. For the playschool, last year was my first time on my own, then I was there for two years on my maternity leave, and I had subbed there 7 years prior. What’s the most enjoyable thing about working with your two jobs? At the playschool, the kids are only three and four, and the things they say are really funny. They’re so truthful. With the pool, I like how quickly the kids learn, whatever you’re teaching them. How long have you lived in Drumheller? Full time, 10 years. Where are you from? I’m originally from Edmonton. What made you move

to Drumheller? My husband and I met at Red Deer College, and he has a farm here. We didn’t live here full time until we had our son in 2002. Where were you two living before moving? We were here in the summer for the farm season, and then we were living in Banff for the winter. What’s your sons name? Chase, he’s 11 now. Do you have a favourite thing about Drumheller? Probably the dinosaurs. Most locals don’t, but I like that they attract people to the town. Favourite place you’ve visited? I try to go to Phoenix, Arizona once a year. My parents have a house there, but I enjoy the dry heat. Any hobbies? Gardening. I don’t know if we could make it through the year without garden carrots. I grow a lot of things for my sisters, nieces and nephews.

International Program wraps up for another year Lauren Main | inSide Drumheller The Drumheller Valley Secondary School’s (DVSS) International Program has ended for the school year and the town of Drumheller said farewell once again to students heading back home for the summer. Fifty-seven students were welcomed at the beginning of September from countries across the world, reaching as far as Mexico, Nigeria, China/Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Germany, Cameroon, Ghana, and many more countries. The program has brought in a distinct diversity of students, which, in turn, has impacted both the school and the community of Drumheller. Curtis LaPierre, principal of DVSS, isn’t surprised these students have made such an impact. “They help define us as a community,” LaPierre says. Running for ten years now, the program has been hitting higher numbers of new students each year. This year, the numbers for international students have reached an all time high and LaPierre estimates next year’s incoming student population to the school will increase even more. LaPierre and the students of DVSS look forward to the mixture of new and returning international students for the 2015 school year. Opportunities set-up through the dorms and small businesses around town have created an economic benefit that budded due to the placement of The International Program at the school. The program has given the Drumheller workforce an edge as they offered a three month practicum for a group of fourteen Korean students hoping to gain career experience in Canada. Jobs offered varied from cooking to hairstyling and cosmetology. Dennis Standage at Sublime Food & Wine has

always had a great experience with the International Program and he thinks it’s a great opportunity for both the students and businesses. Standage enjoyed hosting four Korean students, and holds a “Korean night,” each year where they allow the students to create their own cultural dishes for the customers to experience. Sublime has been committed to the program for two years and are looking forward to their third. The long term program at DVSS has produced roots in some of its students like Yonathan Leonard. Originally from Indonesia, Leonard has been coming to Drumheller for two years with The International Program. Leonard graduated this 2014 school year and plans to come back to Canada again in the fall to pursue a postsecondary education at Red Deer College. “It’s a great experience to know other people with different culture and personality. Also, using English as my second language

for everyday conversation helps me too. With all of that, it builds my independence and my confidence,” Leonard says. As the International Program continues to positively impact its global stu-

dents, the local students living in Drumheller are also feeling the benefits. Emily Spitzer, a DVSS student entering grade twelve in the fall, has been impacted in her personal life due to the program. “It’s a great opportunity to meet people and expand your outlook on the culture outside of Drumheller,” Spitzer says, “I’ve made new friends that I wouldn’t have ever met if this program didn’t exist. I’m really excited to meet and learn from even more students next year.” The International Program will continue in the fall and Drumheller’s school, businesses, and community will once again be diversified by the presence of their multi-cultural student body for another school year.

Stuffed Artichoke Bottoms This is a win-win recipe for spinach-artichoke dip lovers. You get to eat the spinach dip out of a mini artichoke bowl! Sometimes canned artichoke bottoms are hard to find, but when you come across them, they are worth stocking up on. This is the most tender part of the artichoke and the possibilities are endless for the ways to use them. One of my favorites, is to take my spinach dip recipe and fill the artichoke bottom with a heaping tablespoonful. (or you can buy a nice dip in the deli of your grocery store, too) *take a thin slice off the bottom of the artichoke so it stands up. Top it off with a spoonful of grated mozza or parmesan cheese (or a nice Italian blend) and bake at 375 for about 10 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly. This is the recipe I use for the spinach dip (you don’t have to add the artichokes, but it is still as good if you do)

Spinach Artichoke Dip 2 - 8oz. pkg. cream cheese 1 pkg. frozen spinach, thawed and drained well 1 c. grated cheddar cheese 1 c. grated Parmesan (or the Italian blend package) 2 tsp. dill 1 can artichoke hearts, chopped 1 c. mayonnaise 2 c. diced onion 1 clove garlic 2 c. cooked, crumbled bacon Mix all together. This recipe is the one used to fill a hollowed bread loaf. For the stuffed artichoke bottoms, you would only need to make ½ or ¼ of the recipe. It doesn’t hurt to make half and enjoy the rest as a dip. If you make the full recipe, you can freeze what you don’t use. I have hollowed out buns and stuffed them with the dip to make individual spinach dip loaves, too. You can freeze them and just take out as many as you need that way.

Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan Who are you? Sarah McDonald & family. Where are you from? Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan. It’s a town 30 minutes away from Prince Albert. What brings your family to Drumheller? The museum, but also the fact that as kids, we visited the town and we wanted to share that with our children now. How long are you staying in town? We’ve been here for one day now, and we’re staying for three more days. What is on your tour list today? We visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

If you had to contrast a place that you’ve visited with Drumheller, what is better about Drumheller? It just appears out of nowhere. It’s a hidden gem, and the fact that it’s family orientated is such a bonus. Would you change anything about Drumheller? No, the history really overcomes any negatives that may appear. If we visited Christopher Lake, what would you suggest we see? Prince Albert National Park, along with all the surrounding forests and lakes.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

During its busiest time, the East Coulee School held 250 students on the main floor and at least 110 students in the basement classrooms. The school was originally built in 1930 to house grades one to five - 1934 addition relocated students who were being schooled in temporary classrooms in town. The school served a growing population through the 1930s and 1940s, and as coal mines were closed and residents moved away from East Coulee, the school was finally closed in the 1970s. Museum Executive Director Barb Steeves has been told the backhoes were almost at the front door to demolish the school when efforts to save

the building were successful. In 1985 the school reopened its doors as the East Coulee School Museum. The museum helps visitors to remember and learn about the “men who mined the black” and their families, along with the contributions they made to the local community. Visitors can wander through the museum or they can take part in one of the guided tours available. Tours include a visit to the coal boiler room, where the hardworking boiler finally gave out in 2012 after a solid 78 years of service, and the last load of coal delivered in both the boiler and coal room still sit. There is a 1936 style classroom set up that

is an interactive classroom for both school groups and visitors who take the selfguided tour at the museum. A room at the museum is dedicated to the miners who worked the area, and holds pieces from their working life that serve as a poignant reminder of the dangerous conditions in which these men were expected to work. Visitors can wander through the museum or they can take part in one of the guided tours available. The museum also has a fossil display on the main floor that’s now in its second year. This fossil exhibit was created from the collection of East Coulee resident Wayne

Marshall, from pieces that were retrieved from the area many years ago, some of which have been beautifully crystallized over time. The museum will next be working to set up a realistic exhibit in the school basement’s science laboratory, putting to good use the old school equipment presently stored away. The museum offers reasonably price drinks and meals in the lovely Willow Tea Room, and also has a gift shop holding a variety of items to appeal to a wide range of tastes. The East Coulee School Museum is open daily May 2 to September 2, 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, very little can disappoint you or affect your mood. Enjoy the responsibility-free week with a free spirit. This is a great time for a vacation. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Think through all of your options before you act, Virgo. While something may seem like a good idea at first, careful thought may reveal some bumps in the road. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Work hard to earn a promotion at work, Libra. While you may need to take on more responsibility and work longer hours, the payoff will be well worth it.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, if you feel you are at a crossroads, take your time to make the best possible decision. This is a significant moment for you, and it requires focus and forethought. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, supporting a family member who deserves it has you riding high this week. This support may be emotional in nature or even financial support if you can manage. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, family activities are getting in the way of business prospects, and vice versa. You may need to make a difficult decision in the near future. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, think through the pros and cons of speaking your mind at work. Your opinions are valid, but you run the risk of alienating certain people, and that should not be taken lightly. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Approach a problem that’s been puzzling you from a different perspective, Pisces. This new way of looking at things makes all the difference.

Already 231 are signed up for the ďŹ fth annual Community Futures Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon event scheduled for September 14, and along with runners, they are looking for volunteers. This year the event is celebrating its ďŹ fth anniversary and to mark this, they are adding a full 42-kilometre marathon road race. It takes on all aspects of the varied Drumheller terrain. While registration appears strong, organizer Colin Kloot says there are only 16 racers signed up for the full marathon. “Those numbers are strong,â€? he said, adding

that the participation in the 5K family walk and run usually picks up towards the end. The Community Futures Half Marathon registration is strong with about 130 and counting signed up. Kloot says there is still time for those wishing to train and do their ďŹ rst half marathon to get in shape for that race. “It’s not too late to start training, but they should get going,â€? he said, adding, “when training, listen to your body.â€? The Encana 10k run also sees strong registration, however Kloot expects they could see some dropping out to take on the ďŹ rst Tough Mudder Event in Drumheller coming up on

Fourteen year-old Carmanah Olbrich has her eyes ďŹ rmly rooted on the future, and an invitation to a fall soccer training camp. The provincial training camp has twentytwo positions, and eight of those are at a coach’s invitation, which is what Olbrich would like to receive. The invitation would come at the end of the season with the soccer squad she joined in Carstairs. She travels there to play with a team made up of players from Southern Alberta, including Carstairs, Olds, and Drumheller. She was looking forward to the practices that started at the end of June in Carstairs because it was her ďŹ rst time trying out with a provincial team. But plans fell through, and the team won’t be heading to the provincials this year. Although disappointed, she’ll be playing in some tournaments the

coaches are organizing, and she’s working hard to earn an invitation to the fall provincial training camp, location to be determined. “Now at my age it’s probably time to start getting serious, and it’s a good time to learn to try and build some skills,â€? she said. Olbrich said she ďŹ nds using those skills in an offensive position is more of a challenge for her, but one that she enjoys. “I love to play forward, that’s my favourite position. It involves being on the attack more than the defense, and trying to score goals early.â€? Her determination, coupled with advances in her skills, could lead

to the provincial training camp, and a step closer to achieving her goal of joining Team Alberta. And the young soccer player is thinking even farther ahead than just Team Alberta. “It would be nice to play for a college team. It would be great to play in Canada.â€? She adds it would be good to have soccer in North America, because it hasn’t been as popular lately. Her Dad introduced her to soccer when she was very young, and she hasn’t looked back. “I love it,â€? she said. Olbrich will ďŹ nd out in August if she gets a spot at the provincial training camp.
