Heritage Resource Bylaw expected in fall

The Prince of Cambridge, son of Will and Kate, was born earlier this week, so inSide Drumheller asks: “What naming advice would you have given Will and Kate?”

Tracy Behuniak “Don’t name him Charles.”

The Town of Drumheller hopes to help historic buildings in Drumheller, such as the Navy League building, access provincial funding through the long-awaited Heri-

tage Resource Bylaw. Recent events have resulted in the bylaw being pushed back, but it is anticipated the finished draft will be ready in the fall. inSide photo by Michael James

Brenden Huntley “I’d name him Anakin, because he’s the chosen one.”

Robin Telasky “Charles would’ve been an appropriate name.”

Drumheller residents hoping to restore their historic properties will have to wait just a little longer to be eligible for funding from the provincial government. The long awaited Heritage Resource Bylaw is expected to be brought before Drumheller Council late this fall. “We’ve got so many other things that have come forward on the agenda. For now it’s on the back burner, but I’m anticipating it will come out in the late fall,” said Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services for the Town of Drumheller. Staff are working on the move to the new Town Hall. At the moment they are investigating similar bylaws in oth-

er communities, which either create separate bylaws for each heritage resource or creates an all-encompassing bylaw that is amended each time a new resource is added.

“I’ve done some research on other communities on what their bylaws look like. Generally speaking, I want to create a bylaw that is as easy to administer as possible. It’s definitely a worthy project, but has been simmering for awhile.”

Paul Salvatore Director of Community Services Town of Drumheller

“I’ve done some research on other communities on what their bylaws look like. Generally speaking, I want to create a bylaw that is as easy to administer as possible,” said Salvatore. “It’s definitely a worthy project, but has been simmering for awhile.” Some owners have been waiting a long time for the bylaw to be finished. “Three years ago, it was supposed to be an 18-month process. My building is on the list with the other properties worthy of being promoted as historical properties. Over the years, we’ve done most of the recommendations to our building, but there are quite a few others who need the resources a lot more,” said

Mike Todor, owner of Fine Photography. Heritage designation from the Town of Drumheller would allow property owners to apply to become an Alberta Heritage Resource and be eligible for funding for restoration. Fifty properties were identified in the Heritage Inventory. “Once the bylaw is passed and a building designated, it does put some restrictions on the owners. The main precept of the committee was to preserve these buildings,” said Councillor Tom Zariski, who participated in the Heritage Inventory. “There were properties where the owner decided not to be a part of the list, which is a shame, because they can do whatever they want with the

building and even tear it down.” Some of the sites that are being considered for heritage designation include Dinny the Dinosaur, the Midland Train Bridge, Navy League Building, Central School, and multiple properties in downtown. After the first 50 are designated, more properties are being considered to also be named heritage resources. However, before more properties are added, the bylaw has to be passed by Council. “I’ve talked to a number of people who have some pretty neat plans for their buildings, but can’t do anything yet,” said Zariski. “It’s unfortunate we can’t push things through a little quicker.”

Rollover on Carbon Hill A female driver was transported to Drumheller Hospital Wednesday evening following a single vehicle rollover on the Carbon Hill (S.R. 575) on Wednesday evening, July 24. Apparently she was distracted for a moment and hit the guardrail as she reached the crest of the hill. A door was ripped off as a result of the impact and the late model truck she was driving rolled in the north ditch. Drumheller Emergency Services responded to the scene

at approximately 8:15 p.m., and traffic was halted while the area was cleaned up by fire crews. A second truck, though not involved in the incident, was coming down the hill and had to take sudden evasive action to avoid oncoming traffic, elected to hit the ditch, re-entered the road, and finally stopped on an approach road. Weather was clear at the time and not a factor in the accident. Extent of injuries to the driver is not known at this time. inSide photo O.R. Sheddy

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Local truck gets driven Tony Butt has twice restored his 1953 GMC Custom and isn’t afraid to take it out on the road. He bought this pick-up about 35 years ago from his cousin who had the classic just sitting at his farm near Horseshoe Canyon. The truck is all original, powered by a 216 cubic inch inline six, and delivers the power through a three speed with on-the-tree shifting. It’s fivewindow cab design makes it even more rare. He rebuilt the truck but it sat for a while as his family grew. Since then, he refurbished the classic, and isn’t afraid to take it out on the road. “I’d drive it everyday if I could.” Weekender photo by Patrick Kolafa

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Food for

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist

Summer Salads In my last column, I said Summer and Salmon go hand in hand. I now say Summer and Salad go hand in hand. Summer is such a nice time to kick back and enjoy easy foods that you aren’t standing over a hot stove to prepare. I also mentioned a lovely salmon meal the men treated us to at the cabin. In the meantime, the ladies put together a beautiful berry salad to compliment the salmon. I have since found a similar recipe with a few enhancements that make it even better than I imagined it could be. The one we had used a base of mixed greens and herbs. I am not sure if this blend is available locally, but it was mighty tasty - there was even a hint of dill in there.

BERRY TOSSED SALAD Yield: 8 servings. Ingredients • 1 package (10 ounces) salad greens • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries • 1 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced • 1/4 cup chopped red onion • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese • 2 tablespoons slivered almonds CREAMY RASPBERRY DRESSING: • 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons sugar • ½ cup mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon raspberry vinegar • 1 tablespoon 2% milk • 2-1/2 teaspoons poppy seeds • 2-1/2 teaspoons seedless raspberry jam Directions • In a large salad bowl, combine the greens, strawberries, kiwi, onion, feta cheese and almonds. • In a small bowl, whisk the dressing ingredients. Drizzle desired amount over salad and toss to coat. *Our cabin salad included blueberries, raspberries and strawberries - so you see, you can use almost any fruit available. It is so great in the summer time! I have also made this on a base of fresh spinach for the greens. You can dress the salad with a simple poppyseed dressing as well. I hope you are enjoying these lazy hazy daze of summer!
