Husband and wife, Les and Lesa Grammer were soaking up the sunshine and having a little summer fun at the Rotary Spray Park on Thursday, July 19. The couple, from Lac La Biche, were enjoying the park with their children. Lesa Grammer commented how much fun they were having and said, “We don’t have anything like this at home.”

Passion Play breaks attendance records during second weekend Michael James | inSide Drumheller

There seems to be no slowing down at the Canadian Badlands Passion Play.

In another sign the Passion Play continues to grow its world class performance, the 2012 production has set a new record for attendance.

On Saturday, July 21, a record 2,647 people came out for a single performance.

The same weekend saw the highest numbers in the history of the Passion Play.

“The second weekend was phenomenal,” said Vance Neudorf, Executive Director of the Passion Play.

However, despite the record weekend, overall numbers were roughly 1,000 below the record breaking 2011 season, which also had the 100th performance milestone.

Rainy weather plagued the opening weekend of the 2012 Passion Play. The performance on Saturday, July 14 was cancelled part way through, only the second time in the history of the play a show was cancelled.

The performance the next day was beset by a prolonged drizzle.

Neudorf credits word of mouth playing a critical role in bringing in record breaking numbers the following weekend.

“After the first weekend, word of mouth got out about the quality of the play and we saw huge numbers during the second weekend,”

said Neudorf.

This year’s performance also saw a noticeable increase in the number of international visitors to the play.

“It might be a spin off of the Calgary Stampede, but we saw a lot more international crowd. As word of mouth spreads and we keep doing what we do, we hope with what we have to offer we will see more of that crowd,” said Neudorf.

Now that the Passion Play has wrapped up the 2012 season, staff will be pouring through the 1,000 evaluations emailed to attendees. So far, roughly 700 people have responded. So far, the response looks good.

“It’s an unheard of response rate on a survey. It’s been positive with glowing reports on how much people loved it. The overall recommendation rate, where we ask if people would recommend seeing the Passion Play, is 98 percent,” said Neudorf.

The survey is sent out each year, but a new question was added this year asking attendees what else they did in Drumheller.

The Passion Play is in the process of reviewing the responses and hopes they will provide new insight to the economic impact of the play.

Loving dog owners Dwaine and Betty Kipling were beside themselves when their beloved 12 year-old Pug, named Sidney, was having trouble moving her back legs while she walked.

Due to a pinched nerve in her back, and old age, her back legs would mostly drag when she walked, causing her nails to become cut and bloody. “First o we bought a stroller from the Salvation Army and turned it into a dog stroller. However, she wasn’t getting her exercise riding around in it,â€? said Dwaine Kipling.

It was while down in San Diego, California that the Kipling’s ďŹ rst heard of a “doggy wheelchair.â€? “We found some for sale but they were around $400.

So I went on eBay and found this design and decided to make one myself,� said Kipling.

Going back to the Salvation Army, Kipling was able to take the wheels o an old toy, and bought the pipe and ďŹ ttings separately.

The ďŹ rst prototype was a bit too narrow for Sidney’s physique, so it was back to construction. “This is the new and improved version. She’s been in ďŹ ghts with it, she’s rolled it, she runs over your feet and loves every minute of it,â€? said Kipling, smiling at his old pet.

Trying to avoid too much loss of muscle mass in her back end, Kipling said they keep her out of the wheelchair while she’s at home or around the yard. It is when they go out for their routine walks that they put her in, to avoid her nails being drug on the ground. “She’s pretty happy since we got her in it,â€? said Betty Kipling. “When she gets in a ight though that’s a sight to see. Those wheels are almost smoking,â€? said Dwaine Kipling with a little laugh.

During the stop, the investigator developed suspicion of the presence of illicit drugs. A search was conducted which resulted in the seizure of 535 grams of cocaine and the seizure of over $3000.

Graham will be appearing in court on July 27, 2012 in Drumheller.

Returning a 95 year-old photo Donella Swan | inSide Drumheller

During renovations to their 1915 farmhouse, located in Kneehill County just minutes from Monarch Hill, Lori and Doug Jacobson came across two photographs in between the walls after tearing some of the original plaster down.

The first photo found was the Rodseth family, and it was returned to the Vickers family who live here in Drumheller, grandchildren of Joakim and Ingelev Rodseth.

“The second photo only had the names

Alice, Violet, Grace and their ages written on the back. Two were 17 and one 15. There was no date given and no surname, so we weren’t sure if we were going to be able to find the family,” said Lori Jacobson.

The Drumheller Mail decided to put the word out via Facebook to see if anyone had information. Kim Pliva was able to point out one girl as most likely being Alice DeBoer. Her daughter, Lois Beaton, still lives in Drumheller.

Upon first look, Lois Beaton studied the picture carefully.

“I’m fairly certain

the far one on the left would have been my mother,” said Beaton.

She wasn’t sure who Violet was, but Beaton was sure the darkhaired girl on the right would have been her aunt Grace.

“My grandparents homesteaded where Lori and Doug now live. My mother was born in 1900, and grew up there as a kid, spending the summer in the area and they usually wintered down south in the States,” said Beaton.

Beaton said her grandfather professionally plastered walls, which would have explained why the farmhouse walls were done in that fashion. Beaton lived in the house herself for over 30 years.

Beaton said her aunt Grace would have been a few years older than her mother. Judging by the ages written

on the back, which Beaton said matched her grandmother’s handwriting, her mother would have been 15 years old and her aunt 17 at the time the photo was taken.

“We are so pleased to return this photo to the family. We also

found a letter in the wall, something written to Lois herself from her cousin in the States. It mentioned something about meeting a boy,” said Jacobson, teasing Beaton.

“Oh goodness, my past is catching up

The only explanation Jacobson had as to why the photo was in the wall is she figures they fell off of a table or dresser from the room above and slid into a crack.

Two Drumheller residents got a huge surprise recently. Jerry Costache and Linda Paller were winners in the 2012 Hospital Lottery.

Costache has a difficult decision to make.

He was given the choice between taking home a 2012 Ford Explorer or a 2012 Ford Mustang, valued

at $30,028 retail price.

When contacted, Costache had yet to decide which he would be driving home.

“I’ve never won anything before,” said Costache in disbelief.

Paller won $1,000 cash in the lottery.

Though the final number has yet to be calculated, the 2012 lottery is exceeding expectations.

Engagement 65 million years in the making

In this screen capture, Scott Caroline (left) proposes to his girlfriend Sharon Langlois. Caroline asked the Royal Tyrrell Museum to help make his proposal special. Tyrrell Museum staff hid the ring in a box of matrix containing rocks and fossils. Langlois found the ring and thought it had been lost. Then Caroline surprised her by asking for her hand in marriage. The video of the engagement can be found on the Tyrrell Museum’s YouTube page.

Michael James| inSide Drumheller Scott Caroline made engagement history on June 27 by proposing to his girlfriend of six years Sharon Langlois during the indoor DinoSite program at the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

A video of the unique proposal can be found on the Tyrrell Museum YouTube page. In it, Caroline and Langlois are working away on boxes filled with rocks and microfossils.

“I was trying to keep my cool and not blow it. But, when she was digging through the box with the ring, it was sitting right in the open. She wasn’t going for it and I wondered if she wasn’t going for it on purpose. That’s when I started to get really nervous,” said Caroline.

In the end, Sharon finds the ring and Caroline kneels and proposes. Langlois said yes.

Afterwards the couple took some time to drive around Drumheller

and see the Hoodoos.

Caroline got the idea after coming to Alberta for his career.

Caroline works as a heavy equipment operator working to build a wind farm near Stettler.

“One of Sharon’s hobbies is fossil hunting. We live on Vancouver Island and where we live are a couple river beds that have been productive for nice fossils. Since I’ve been working in Alberta I’ve been told about the museum and Drumheller, so I flew her out for her birthday and took her to the Tyrrell Museum for the day. I thought she would get a big kick out of it,” said Caroline.

He contacted the Tyrrell Museum and the staff there went to work helping to plan the special moment, “Scott called us up and asked if it would be alright to surprise his girlfriend at the museum.

We thought it was a really cool idea and wanted to support it.

He wanted to do an outdoor DinoSite, but due to the large amount of rain we had to switch to an indoor program,” said Mike Dooley, Public Relations Coordinator with the Tyrrell Museum.

In the DinoSite program, participants usually head into the Badlands to search for fossils. The indoor version, held when its rainy, has participants sort through boxes filled with small rocks and fossils, similar

to palaeontologists collecting microfossils.

Caroline gave the ring to the Tyrrell the day before and staff made preparations, hiding the ring in one of the DinoSite boxes and gathering a few other employees as extras in the act.

For Caroline and Langlois, their immediate future has them in a long distance relationship.

While Caroline works in Alberta, Langlois still lives on Vancouver Island working as a firefighter for the military.

Things will hopefully change soon for the couple.

“It was about time, after being apart so often, to make it official.

Now we can work towards being together somewhere. She wants to actually move to Drumheller,” said Caroline.

This was the first engagement the Tyrrell Museum has participated in.

“We’re really excited for them and wish them all the best in the future,” said Dooley.

“I couldn’t have asked for better support from the museum, they went above and beyond,” said Caroline. “It was a perfect day. The museum is always going to hold a special place in our hearts.”

The IMCA Modified Stock Car Races took place on both Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22 up at the Dinosaur Downs Speedway. My brother and I came to see Calgary and we had heard about Drumheller as being “dinosaur town.” So after many recommendations from friends and people we met we decided to come out and see what all the buzz was about.

What do you like most so far about the valley? We just arrived here not very long ago, but we are looking forward to seeing the Tyrrell Museum. However, it seems like such a nice, close knit community here. I like the small town feel, it’s much different than being in Mon-

treal where everything is so busy and everyone is on the go constantly. Everyone has been so friendly since arriving, and I really look forward to touring Drumheller for the day.

Is there anything you haven’t liked so far on your visit? No, like I said I enjoy the smaller community feeling. It’s a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

If we were to travel to Montreal,what would suggest we go see? I definitely would recommend shopping downtown, visiting old Montreal, Olympic Stadium is pretty cool, and the Botanical Garden is always a favourite with visitors.

A few of the dinosaurs that make Drumheller one of the most unique places on the planet will soon be migrating.

The Dino Arts Committee hasn’t been slowing down with efforts to revitalize the dinosaurs that populate the town. Five dinosaurs will soon be given new homes, others will be given new looks, and the committee is working on bringing even more dinosaurs into town.

The five dinosaurs that are moving include the one in the park by the Civic Centre (where the Miners Memorial will be located), the one hiding in the boulevard by Sublime, two that were in front of the bowling alley, and the large duck-dinosaur that used to sit at the corner of 2nd Street West and 3rd Avenue. The duck-billed dinosaur has been sitting in storage for years.

The new locations will be along Highway 9 South, in front of Shoppers Drug Mart, the southwest corner of the Drumheller Memorial Arena, and at the intersection of 2nd Street West and South Railway Avenue.

Our goal is to try to do one a year,” said Shoff.

On July 1, the committee held a fundraiser, with a new truck as the prize, to raise money for further projects.

The fundraiser was also a great way for the committee to get feedback from the community.

The Dino Arts Committee will be fundraising again at Family Fun Day on August 18.

“It was a good fundraiser for us, but I also thought it was excellent to get feedback from people and see it was something they care about,” said Shoff.

Community support has helped make the committee possible. With the help of volunteers, the dinosaurs that are currently in town are maintained and given a new look every now and then.

“It’s been an ongoing process since we’ve started. We been trying to redo and repair the dinosaurs,” said Shoff. “It’s a good team building exercise.

If you plan it right, it’s a lot of fun.”

Groups interested in painting a dinosaur can contact Shoff at 403-823-2983.

Once a design is submitted and approved, there is no cost and the Dino Arts Committee supplies all needed materials.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area.

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

This photo was brought in to The Drumheller Mail by Barney Popovich. It was found in an album that belonged to his mother, Mary. The photo is believed to have been taken outside the Commercial Coal Mine in Wayne in 1918. Barney’s father, Eli (as indicated by the arrow) worked at the mine. Upon first glance, Popovich said he thought it was mountain terrain because his father had previously worked for the Canadian National Railway before going underground. However, after reading the information on the back of the photo written by his mother, he realized it was from the Drumheller Valley area. Given the date, Popovich believed his father would have been around 20 or 21 years old in the photo. What’s interesting about this photo, is how many men are smoking a tobacco pipe. Miner’s usually weren’t allowed to smoke underground, for fear of fire hazards. Most smoked above ground, and alternatively chewing tobacco was used while down in the mine. However, also given the fact that the miners have carbide lamps attached to their hats, which had an open flame, may indicate there was no smoking ban yet. One may also take note that the men’s faces are clean. The photo must have been taken before they made their way underground. The mine was open from 1916 until 1938.

Red Wine Wings

The minute I saw this recipe, I knew I had to try it! It sounded unusual but I had a feeling it would taste great. And I was right!

Poaching the chicken to begin with ensures well-cooked wings that are so very tender.

I wasn’t expecting them to have quite the kick to them that they do either.

All the ingredients simmer together for 40 minutes. It’s as easy as that!

4 lb. chicken wings, separated and tips removed 6 cups water 2 cups red wine 1 cup barbecue sauce ¼ cup soy sauce

¼ cup Worcestershire sauce 2 Tbsp. hot pepper flakes 2 Tbsp. ground pepper 1 Tbsp. paprika 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 Tbsp. salt 1 medium onion, chopped 1 large tomato, quartered (I chopped the tomato and served the wings with the tomato bits) After simmering, remove chicken from sauce and grill for 15 - 20 minutes on the barbecue to crisp them up a bit.

Serve up these FRIED PICKLES along side the red wine wings and you will be the talk of the town!

The dipping sauce makes these twice as good! ½ cup flour 1 ¾ tsp Cajun seasoning ½ tsp Italian seasoning ¼ tsp Cayenne pepper ½ tsp salt ½ cup water

2 cups sliced dill pickles Heat 1 inch of peanut oil in a pot to 375 degrees.

Whisk flour, seasonings and water until smooth. Spread the pickles on paper towel and blot dry. Add half the pickles to the batter and toss to coat. Using a slotted spoon, remove and let excess batter drip off.

Add to the oil, one by one and fry until golden – about 2 minutes.

Drain on paper towels and repeat with second half.

Serve with this sauce: ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 Tbsp drained horseradish 2 tsp ketchup ¼ tsp Cajun seasoning The first time I made this, I didn’t have horseradish. I substituted a spicy mustard and it was very good.

I moved here about four weeks ago, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all new to me. I am originally from Medicine Hat. What do you like most about living in the valley? I like how the buildings and the houses and everything is so close knit. It has that city feel

with a small town atmosphere. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really excited to start exploring all the museums around here.

At first I thought there was only the Tyrrell but after moving I am realizing they are all over the place! Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to try to take them all in.

What would you say is your best quality as a person and why?

DORVA revs up to host Drumheller races Donella Swan | inSide Drumheller

During August long weekend, the, “brappp,” sound of dirt bikes and quads will be heard at the DORVA Motocross track located just off of Highway 9 south, by the Stampede Barn. Campers and trailers will fill the parking space, and riders from all over will flood the valley to take in the action.

The Drumheller Off Road Vehicle Association (DORVA) will be hosting the Southern Alberta (SOAB) Series Round 6 & 7 race from August 4-6. An addition to this year’s event will be the quad and side by side mud bog .

For the mud bog, DORVA will build a mud pit. Quad and side by side riders will challenge each other to see who can get through the pit the furthest and the fastest, making it a fun way to get dirty.

“I think Drumheller has one of the best tracks in Alberta because there are so many volunteers and a lot of community suppport to make everything possible. It’s a great practice track for our local riders, and there are facilites for riders of all caliber,” said Casey Christensen, president of DORVA. Practice sign-in will begin Friday evening at 7 p.m. Practice will be held Saturday, and race sign in will

Seven vendors, as well as a concession will be on site for riders' and visitors' convenience.

Members of the Drumheller Titans Football team will be helping out at the race by doing their time flagging for each event. In return for their help, DORVA will make a donation for the players time to the Titans.

“We like to try to give back to the community when we host these events and it’s so great to receive the help,” said Christensen.

There will be lots of local talent in all different classes competing during the race weekend to watch for said Christensen. He also said it is a great way to see the sport up close and personal, without having to travel far.

It’s to the point we are going to have to do some deadheading.

Some plants respond well to different kinds of deadheading.

Perennials, as well as some annuals, need to have some care given to them at this time of year to try and extend the blooming season or in order for the perennial to move into the fall season.

Shearing is one way and a lot of perennials will do well if this is done. It seems a little drastic but in the end you will be glad you did. For the low growing rock garden plants as well as some of the finer textured plants, Snow in Summer, Coreopsis, Basket of Gold, trailing Lobelia, hardy Geranium, take off all the spent flowers and any untidy growth.

Petunias and Nasturtiums also respond well to this treatment. This will, in some cases, make a spent plant become new. Be sure to fertilize gently and don’t let the plant dry out so it has no further reason to be stressed out.

Be sure to use clean shears, scissors anything that is going to be able to make a good clean cut that doesn’t do the squish and tear thing.

Some plants require a more specific approach to the trimming you give them.

Irises, Daylilies, Delphinium, anything with a spike type bloom. I wait until most of the blooms are spent or the one flower in the case of the daylily, is done and then I just snip off the stem or shoot close to the base. Be sure not to get too low into the plant’s green growth as some of them will continue to put up new flower stocks until frost gets them. I also do this in the fall. Once the plants have had a frost, I trim everything back. Again, don’t get too deep or close to the ground, you don’t want to damage anything that is developing into new growth for next year or the next burst of flowers.

Some plants just need you to trim off the spent flowers; Begonias are a good example of this. You can usually do this with your finger tips. Just gently snip the flower off and dispose of it. This helps keep them clean and gives them a better chance to re-bloom.

Doing this also keeps the chance of mold and other fungus from starting in the Begonias, Delphinium, etc. By keeping the plants cleaner you allow more air flow, lowering the chance of problems.
