INDEX

This year, the theme of the Drumheller Parade was “Digging Canada, in honour of the Royal Tyrrell Museum celebrating its 25th year anniversary. The celebrations have already kicked off with a brand new exhibit “Alberta Unearthed: 25 stories of discovery, showcasing 25 of the museum’s most significant specimens and the intriguing stories of their discoveries. They are also planning a major birthday party on September 25, inviting everyone who has been a part of their success over the last 25 years to a reunion. More celebrations are being planned as they are anticipating their 10 millionth visitor walking through the doors sometime over the summer. See more parade coverage on page 2.

inSide STREETERS Drumheller has plenty to offer to celebrate Canada Day. inSide Drumheller asked, “What do you look forward to the most about Canada Day in Drumheller?”

Melissa Stolz “I think the parade will be cool! I am from Ontario and this is my first Canada Day in Drumheller.”

inSide Drumheller - inSideDrumheller.com

Happy Canada Day !

By 10 a.m. more than 4,000 pancakes were served by the Drumheller Kinsmen Club at their annual breakfast at Riverside Value Drug Mart. This year, members of the Drumheller Titans, who are heading to San Diego this fall, helped to serve up fresh pancakes. Kinsman Wes Chung, right, tests the Titans receivers to see how well (l-r) Brandin Mullin, Zach Thomson and Tony Samoleski can catch a pancake, as Kinsman Darcy Schinnour looks on.

The Walmart float won third prize in the commercial float at this year's Canada Day Parade, and made sure to cool off the crowd with water guns.

Tom Stolz “Getting involved in bringing 50 kids from all over the province who will be in the Passion Play, and walking with them in the parade.”

The Drive By Shout Outs performed live on the Hi-Way 9 Express float, which won the commercial float category. (l-r) Jillian and Marcel Augey and Courtney Morse rock out along the route.

Tregg Schneider “I love small town parades so I can’t wait to see the parade in Drumheller. I have just moved from Calgary so this is my first time here on Canada Day.”

Congratulations to all the floats that took part in the 2010 Drumheller Parade and made Canada Day memorable for all. Cindy Clark, president of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce and Andrew Neuman, executive director of the Royal Tyrrell Museum, selected the following Parade float winners: Commercial category: 1st: Hi-Way 9 Express Ltd. 2nd: Riverside Value Drug Mart 3rd: Walmart

Jason DiPietro “I am off to the mountains for Canada Day, because it gets too busy in Drumheller. I still celebrate Canada Day and will be summiting in Athabasca.”

Antique category: 1st: Classic Barns 2nd: Homestead Museum 3rd: Knox United Church

Colin Kloot was busy reminding parade revellers of the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon coming up on Sunday, September 12.

Equestrian category: 1st: Freson IGA 2nd: Western Financial Group 3rd: Golden Valley Equestrian Center Sports category: 1st: Drumheller Gymnastics 2nd: Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon 3rd: Drumheller Dragons Youth category: 1st: 4-H Club 2nd: Drumheller Sea Cadets 3rd: Kidztown Community category: 1st: Freemasons 2nd: Drumheller Area Health Foundation 3rd: Calgary Stampede

Becky Neuman and the Band-o- Coots rocked the stage in downtown Drumheller in the afternoon, and then were at the concert in the park bringing in the fireworks.

are you? WHO

Be on guard for telephone scams Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller The Drumheller RCMP are warning residents to be aware of scams, and that a little bit of suspicion can go along way in guarding yourself from potential fraud. This comes in light of a growing number of incidents where people believing they are helping a friend or family member in a time of emergency end up being taken for a ride and cash.

Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins… says to be aware of fraud Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins explains one recent type of fraud that is being employed by criminals is using another person’s identity. Often the culprit will pose as a close relative or a close friend and call the victim on the telephone. The caller knows enough about the person to be believable, and pleads that they are in dire need of money. They ask for the money to be transferred via a wire service. Once the funds are gone, they are generally unrecoverable. He says seniors can be particularly vulnerable to this type of scam. For example if a person calls and says they are the person’s grandson, many seniors may not recognize the voice of their grandchild, but the culprit is believable.

Hopkins outlines three ways to protect oneself from this sort of fraud; these are prevention, detection and awareness. He says if you are suspicious of the person., something simple is to ask for a number to call the person back. He says the more detail a person can get from the caller on their identity, the better. Another hint is to discuss things only this close relative would know. A simple question like “Why are you calling?” can be revealing. “If someone is asking for money, don’t necessarily believe it, go a few steps further to genuinely verify that it is a legitimate call,” says Hopkins. There is a tool at your disposal to help track the caller. “If you punch *57 after you terminate a call, it locks the phone number into the telephone providers information bank,” said Hopkins. The number is then recoverable by the police. If a person is suspicious of such an incident, Hopkins says it is important to write down the time and date of the call, and as much detail as you can remember from the conversation, and to report it to the police. He adds these sorts of scams are just as easy to pull off via email or through text messages. Phonebusters.com, The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre is aware of this type of scam, often known as the “Emergency Scam” or “Grandparent Scam.” According to its statistics in 2008 there were 130 reported attempts of this scam and 69 successful pleas, amounting to $157,452.16. By the end of October 2009, there were reported 278 failed attempts and 88 successful pleas, amounting to $317,732.63. The website estimates that the reports reflect only 5 percent of the actual number of cases.

inSideENTERTAINMENT Photographer receives commendation from international photography contest inSide | Drumheller - inSideDrumheller.com

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller man’s photography is turning heads, locally, provincially and internationally. About five years ago Darryl Reid took his photography to the next level, going from a hobby to craft at the urging of friends. He has stepped out into the photography world, and it appears that it has begun to pay dividends. His work received a special commendation from a jury of the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards. This means he was in the top 50 entered in the landscape category. This is one of the most prestigious photography contests in the world, and quite a feat as there were more than 45,000 entries overall in the contest. The photo chosen is entitled 'Carved in Sand', and it is a long exposure of the hoodoos taken at night, us-

ing only natural light. This is one of Reid’s favourite techniques. “With a long exposure, details you can’t see in the dark begin to come out,” he said. With international success, he is humbled, but also proud of another work that was shortlisted by the Visual Arts Association of Alberta. This photo, entitled 'Crop Buster' is a dramatic capture of an anvil cloud. His work will be on display with other selected works in Edmonton this summer. Many may already be familiar with Reid’s work, as he was featured the Drumheller Public Library in May, and he will have another exhibition in August. His entry in the Sony World Photography Awards will be published in a book with other selected works from the contest in the near future.

Canadian Passion Play returns to Drumheller in July Kyle Smylie The Weekender

Every year the Canadian Passion Play undergoes minor “tweaking” to improve the already starkly authentic play that is set to continue its almost two decade run on the weekends of July 9 and 16. The Passion Play has made a number of physical changes to the grounds and infrastructure, as well as enhancements to the script and a number of scenes. “When you include Bill Hamm’s musical arrangements with the choir, it all adds up to what we believe will be our best Passion Play performance ever. Thankfully, amidst all of these changes, we’ve kept our core group of leading actors intact,” says artistict director Randall Wiebe. The actors playing Matthew (Saskatoon actor/playwright, Tim Hildebrand), Mary Magdalene (British/ African actress Lennette Randall), and Jesus (Strathmore’s Stephen Waldschmidt) will be returning to play the lead trio. “Their performances and audience feedback were exceptional, so we de-

cided to repeat it again this year,” says Wiebe. “Also returning for his third season as Jesus is Waldschmidt who has grown into his role with an understanding and passion that is a joy to watch.” The Passion Play is also welcoming David Snider back to their fold, who played Jesus in 2007. “David who has played the lead role in several recent summer musicals at Rosebud Theatre will portray Sadduk, one of the top Pharisees in Jerusalem. He will also be the understudy for both Jesus and Matthew. David is a consummate professional actor who makes us all better.” Wiebe says 2010 is a special year for Passion Plays, as many North Americans will be travelling to Oberammergau, Germany to see their version of the Passion Play, only performed every 10 years. “Many patrons tell us they have seen the Oberammergau version and they prefer ours,” says Wiebe, “because it is so authentic both visually and geographically.” Another change that may affect the way you buy tickets this year, is seating is now assigned. Tickets can be

purchased allowing the audience to choose where they would like to sit. Tickets can be bought online at www.canadianpassionplay.com or by dialling 1-888-823-2001. The first weekend of shows starts on

July 9 and 10 at 6:00 p.m., July 11 at 3:00 p.m., then the second weekend Friday, July 16 at 6:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18 at 3:00 p.m.

The Passion Play is returning this month with the same leading trio playing Jesus, Matthew, and Mary Magdalene, but will feature a number of aesthetic changes that will greater improve the already authentic show. Assigned seating is one of the new changes to the tale that relives the life of Jesus Christ. photo submitted

Everyone Welcome Building a 70’s classic

CRUISE IN EVERY THURSDAY

Even the name Aspen conveys a calming quiet mood. That is until you see Dale Combest’s 1977 Dodge. He has put about three and a half years work into making this 70’s classic not just a show car, but a go car. He originally selected this car as an affordable hot rod, but with all the work and parts he has invested, it rivals many of the classics on the show circuit. On the outside, he modified the body by filling in the rear windows, and shaving the bumpers to fit the body contours. It is topped off with a performance hood scoop. It took him two trips to the paint booth to get it looking how he envisioned. Inside he started with the stock 360 c.i. V8 the car came with, but now it breaths in through a Elelbrock carb and intake manifold which feeds the Mopar power plant with high performance camshafts, and exhales through a custom performance exhaust system. The power is put to the wheels through a rebuilt transmission with a shift kit and a 2,500 stall torque converter. With all of that, it is amazing there is still some tread on the tires.

Rowleywood, ghost town ‘gem’ next door Kyle Smylie The Weekender

For many, ghost towns conjure images of tumbleweeds and by-gone cowboys who still haunt the saloons and hotel rooms of empty, deteriorated buildings that dot the prairie landscape. But not all ghost towns are forsaken, as the ones surrounding the Drumheller valley still hold the same spirit and determination of the ranchers and farmhands who pioneered the west. Rowley, a half hour drive north of Drumheller, is a ghost town that is all but dead. “Rowley is one of the best preserved ghost towns,” says Chris Attrell, creator of www.ghosttownscanada.ca and an avid ghost town fan himself. “It’s a rare gem, just a gorgeous place.” Having travelled to Rowleywood (dubbed this for marketing purposes) many times, Attrell knows a gem of a town when he sees it. He adds that it is also one of the best preserved ghost towns he’s seen.

Peacefulness is what keeps Christo- ings to be removed, people want

change. This is what drives him and his fellow enthusiasts to photograph the beautiful reminders of our past while he still can. “It really captures the sprit of what a small town would be like in the 1940’s, they do it without commercializing it too much. That’s what not only brings people in once, but what brings them back over and over.” “One day, probably not Rowley, these buildings will go to the wayside. You can drive by an old grain elevator one day and the next it’ll be gone.” These towns are our history, says Attrell, it’s what we were like, and it’s who we are. Rural communities are feeling it coming with the closing of rail-lines and grain elevators that have been the arteries of the community. With those disappearing, the towns will almost inevitably turn into ghosts themselves. “It’s the way it is.” But with the help of observant camera lenses, these towns can be kept in our history forever, regardless if the buildings can’t be.

ers and students are excellent role models for all other Canadian schools, by awarding them with the National Diamond Recognition Award for K-9 and the Secondary School Award. The Diamond Award recognizes the provision of 150 minutes per week of quality physical education. The Secondary Award is for providing students with compulsory quality physical education courses that are exceptional and enhanced by leadership opportunities and intramural activities. The school is leading the advocacy initiative for the physical education of all Canadian children. Research from leading na-

tional and international health and physical education associations and experts confirms that our children need a quality physical education program in order to enjoy healthy, active and productive lives. UNESCO goes as far as saying that quality physical education is a basic right of every child. Quality physical education provides children with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and habits they need in order to be physically active and to enjoy healthy, active, and productive lives now and

in the future. Over the last decade or more, there has been a significant decline in the quality and quantity of school physical education being offered to our children. Most schools in Canada are not providing the recommended national standard of 150 minutes per week of physical education, or even the minimum requirements as set out by their own provincial curricula or. This school year, only 910 schools applied and qualified for an award out of over 15,000 schools across Canada.

BUILDING SUPPLIES OSTER, Benjamin 1927 - 2010 Ben passed away peacefully at his room in Continuing Care in Drumheller, on Friday, June 25, 2010. He will be missed by his sons, Jerry (Janet), Jim (Sharon), and grandchildren, Scott, Cindy (Lee), Michael and Laura. Ben was born on May 18, 1927 on his father’s homestead NE of Hussar, Alberta, 2½ miles west of Ducklake. He was the 13th child in the extended families of John & Christina (Herman-Schaffer) Oster. He attended school at the Fairyvale country school and after losing his parents at an early age, was raised by his older siblings. At age 17, Ben worked for 3 years for the Douglas family on the ranch in Gem, leaving for short stints in the Reserve Army at Suffield. After that, Ben moved to Hussar, and bought a 3-ton truck, hauling gas in barrels for his ½ brother’s service station in Hussar, as well as coal and grain. In 1948, while taking an electrical course at SAIT, he met Fern Campbell, a nurse at the General Hospital. They were married on October 8, 1949. They bought a ½ section 1 mile west of the DuckLake Hall, built a house and started raising a family. Gerald was born in 1950 followed by Jim in 1952. They continued to expand their farm and in 1973, bought part of Ole Christensen estate and started to farm with his boys until his retirement in 1989. Ben & Fern built their dream home in Newcastle in 1991. Throughout his life, he enjoyed many hobbies, including snowmobiling, rock & coin collecting, lapidary work, and gardening. In his later years, he became an avid collector of unique antiques. Ben & Fern were active members of the Hussar chapter of the Masonic Lodge, and Ben was a Past Master. He was predeceased by his father John, in 1937, and his mother Christina, in 1942. On the Oster side, by his ½ siblings, Ed, Leona, Katie, Adolph, Ida and on the Schaffer side, by his ½ siblings, Maggie, Albert, Frieda, Walter, and Johnny. He is survived by his oldest son Gerald, wife Janet, children Scott, and Cindy (Lee); his youngest son James, wife Sharon, children Michael and Laura; his ½ sisters Olga Mackenzie (nee Schaffer) of Kamloops, Elsie Powers (nee Oster) of Calgary, sister-in-law Irene Schaffer (Johnny) of Calgary, and Fern’s sister Shirley & Herman Dorin of Didsbury, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Ben’s life will be held on Thursday, July 8 at 2 pm in the Hussar Hall, with Courtney-Winters Funeral Chapel in charge of the arrangements. Donations on Ben’s behalf can be made to Drumheller Continuing Care.

Globe celebrates World Cup…What about Drumheller? Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The world is cheering as nations go toe-to-toe in possibly the largest single sporting event on the planet, but in Drumheller the air is somewhat silent. The World Cup only comes around once every four years. In the time between the tournaments, teams from around the world are challenging to be one of the top 32 elite teams selected. While there are almost 200 Drumheller youngsters playing soccer, as well as adult drop-in and indoor soccer throughout the winter, and there were historic sides playing in the valley in the days of the mines, the global buzz about the tournament seems to have skipped over the valley. If you listen carefully, there isn’t a buzz, but a quiet hum. While the sports pubs aren’t broadcasting the games on giant screens, there are some diehard fans enjoying the action. “The reason I like the Winter Olympics so much, is three or four months later there is going to be the World Cup,” laughs Jerry Brett. “It’s my warm-up, my indicator this is a World Cup year.” Brett’s pre-tournament predictions of an EnglandPortugal final were dashed by the German side on Sunday. Especially disappointing to him because this year there were five Tottenham Hotspurs, his home team, on the English squad. He likens the rest of the world’s obsession with the “Beautiful Game” with that of Canada and its national pasttime of hockey. You don’t have to look too far out of the valley to see the game is more appreciated. Brett went to Calgary to take in England’s first game at the Ship and Anchor, English pub that has been bursting at the seams since the tournament began. In previous World Cup years, some local soccer fans have gathered at Yavis and the golf course for England's games. This

year Brett said he and local friends are gathering at home watch the matches. “Like hockey, playing the game certainly helps you understand the game,” he said. There are a few Canadian connections to the World Cup. Some of the seed for the grass pitches in South Africa was grown in Manitoba, and British tabloids have connected a Canadian model with one of England’s goalkeepers, and his fumbling a goal was blamed on the couple's recent split. There are, however, many more Canadian connections to the game. Soccer has eclipsed hockey in participation, as more Canadian youth are taking up the sport. Gavin Makse, who coaches and referees socsilent. cer in Drumheller, says it While youngsters have latched onto soccer as a favourite, World Cup buzz in the valley is relatively inSide filephoto is, a matter of time before soccer captures the imagination. “It is one of those sports that is popular with youth but not at the professional level,” said Makse. The Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society hosted their 2nd Annual Tractor Pull event at the stampede grounds on Saturday, June 26. Under glorious sunshine, many came to see highly modified, supercharged trucks and tractors compete for the longest pull. Adults and children alike were given plenty of excitement. Ear protectors were even supplied for the little ones to cope with the roaring sound of the machines. The trade show offered a variety of products, and the Glover truck on display couldn’t help but capture the attention of people browsing the stands or getting refreshments. The Calgary Stampeders Outriders, a very welcome addition to the event this year, were busy signing autographs and helping with the sale of 50/50 tickets. The girls did a great job cheering the final pull, a video of which can be seen online at drumhellermail.com. The above left photo shows the Brawny truck in mid-pull with the Badlands providing a spectacular backdrop. The above right photo shows Outrider Ashley, left, with event co-organizer Elwood McCarthy, and Outrider Stevie.
