Monday is Heritage Day. Celebrated in some provinces in Canada, including Alberta, the day is a civic holiday, which means it is not statutory. inSide Drumheller asked, “What does Heritage Day mean to you?”

“Proud to be Canadian!...I didn’t know it was called that, or that it was a long weekend.”

Celebrating its 25th birthday this summer, the Royal Tyrrell Museum seems to be getting nods from all over the country. The latest came from the Royal Canadian Mint which rolled out a new dinosaur collectorcoin in honour of the museum. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Mint’s series of dinosaur coins,” says Tyrrell marketing coordinator Leanna Mohan. With a lenticular Albertosaurus in front of the museum itself, the brass coin is sure to be a favourite of local and visiting dinosaur enthusiasts. Monday is Heritage Day Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

Monday, August 2 is Heritage Day in Alberta. Labelled as a civic holiday in this province, the day, first Monday of August, is only celebrated in parts of Canada. However it is a statutory holiday in some provinces; for instance in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. The history of this civic

holiday tells that the day was created to ‘fill a gap’ between a long period between two legal holidays, Canada Day and Labour Day. Originally, Heritage Day was established in 1973 by the Heritage Canada Foundation to encourage the preservation and promotion of Canada’s nationally significant historic, architectural, natural and scenic heritage.

are you? WHO Kirsten Pallesen

Friday, July 30, 2010 - 3

The Heritage Canada Foundation promotes Heritage Day as the third Monday in February. Since its creation, several attempts have been made to try to make Heritage Day a statutory holiday so Canadians across the country can celebrate. So far, the attempts have failed. In Alberta, the third Monday of February is Family Day

and is recognized as a statutory holiday. Heritage Day in Alberta is an “optional” civil holiday, having been downgraded from a statutory holiday following the introduction of Family Day in 1990. Being an optional holiday, some organizations will close for the day while others are open for business.

The federal government is acting before it becomes a necessity, and it is either rushed into a poor decision or the whole process gets bogged down in committee hearings. I’m speaking of the decision to purchase new fighter aircraft to replace the F-18 now in service. There will be those who question why we need to be in such a hurry to buy them when we are pulling out of Afghanistan and we don’t even know what will be our next mission. I suppose that is a bit of a problem, we don’t know our next mission. That being so, don’t you think it prudent to operate by the Boy Scout rule, “Always be prepared”? For indeed, who knows what we may face. The F-18 is a fine aircraft, but by the time we take delivery of the new F-35, the F-18 will have been flying for Canada for over 40 years. Do we really want to hear the same type of stories from our airmen as we have so often heard from our Navy pilots flying the decrepit Sea King, helicopters, that they work so hard to keep airworthy? The Sea King was a good work horse helicopter in its day, but that day passed at least 15 years ago, maybe more. It’s at the point where these machines spend way more time in maintenance than they do in the air, and when they are flown, they can be unreliable due to age. Too many accidents, too much down time. Time to replace. Finding a replacement for and then replacing the Sea King helicopter was a government circus; unfortunately those same helicopters were the circus rides, and Navy and Coast Guard pilots were made to ride them, as with each year they became more unsafe. There were committee meetings, caucus meetings, department meetings, until the government decided to spend money on a new helicopter. Then of course, government changed hands, and in a fit of spite the Liberals cancelled the contract, costing taxpayers $500 million in penalties. Brilliant-no contract, no helicopters and a half a billion dollar tab, for nothing! Only government. The Harper government seems committed to replacing the F-18 and has made a huge step in that direction with the purchase of the F-35. Canada has an interest in purchasing this particular fighter, because Canada is a part of the team responsible for its development. It isn’t called the Joint Strike Fighter for nothing, it was developed jointly by the U.S., Britain, France, Canada and several other NATO AM/FM. To help in its development and then not buy it would be a bit of a waste. Wouldn’t it? At any rate, I can only hope that the Liberals, or a Liberals/NDP/Bloc coalition doesn’t win an election, because if they do, our armed forces will be back to using muskets, heavily padded Red River carts as troop carriers, and propeller-powered fighter planes whose high-tech would be AM/FM radio. It’s not over I know, but to this date, this has got to be the rainiest, coolest, wettest summer I can remember. I don’t think there have been two days back to back when it hasn’t rained, either during the day or at night. If we were to capture half the water that has fallen, we would have more than enough to get us through a dry summer next year, should that occur. Unfortunately we don’t or haven’t done that and so billions of gallons flow merrily by, on their way east. There are those who put out rain barrels and I applaud them, but so much more could be done. There is so much water and we are saving so little of it. Oh well, try to stay dry, and ask the Lord for a week or two of sunny warm weather. 30m

Surprising activities at library’s summer reading program Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Cayden Zackaruk, 10, gets up close and personal with a milk snake from Reptile World at the library’s summer reading program on Thursday. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie

Long summer days require entertainment for those lucky enough to be off school for two months. The Drumheller Public Library is offering a very un-boring way to spend those days, with unexpected thrills three days a week. On Thursday the group of a dozen kids were treated with a visit from Edward the turtle and a slithering milk snake, residents of Reptile World. “It’s a cool experience to have a snake slithering around on you,” says Jordan Mazereeuw, 10. On any given day of the program, which runs Tuesdays to Thursdays, children can expect to build pop-bottle rockets, meet interesting animals and guests from all over the valley. “We like to be involved in partnerships around Drumheller,” says Linde Turner, Director of Library Services. “The activities are varied and it's always strong.” This week’s snake and turtle fit well with the program’s theme “Destination Jungle”, with the entire library decked out with a jungle motif. Interesting fact: milk snakes get their name from a century old myth saying they would suck milk from cows. They simply were in the barn hunting mice and other pests.

Canadian Diabetes Association to host clothesline blitz day in Drumheller Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

Due to a large number of phone calls they received from the area, the Canadian Diabetes Association Clothesline program is coming to Drumheller for a “Blitz Day.” On Saturday, August 14, one of the trucks will be parked at the Walmart parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to receive donations. The association is looking for unwanted, reusable household goods and clothing, they can then resell in

their Value Village stores. Proceeds from sales help three million Canadians living with diabetes. The Clothesline campaign also focuses on the environment and reducing the carbon footprint. Last year, their campaign helped to divert more than 41 million kilograms of clothing and household items from landfills. This translates into a savings of 766 million kWh of energy while reducing the carbon footprint of the donors by 105 million kilo-

Emma Black tells a tale of the train ‘Big Bertha’ in a ghost stories tour at the Atlas Coal Mine Tuesday night. The train’s driver met an unfortunate end with an overhead beam, having his head crushed in 1947. Fishing in the Badlands

Pat Kolafa Weekender

According to long time anglers, there is a big difference between ‘fishing’ and ‘catching’. Fishing refers to the attempt to have one of our Piscean friends grab on to your bait; catching is the act of having said fish available for photo opportunities or as the evening entree. The area near Drumheller offers at least four distinct possibilities for those of you looking for great ‘fishing’ opportunities within a one hour drive. Two of those spots are located within Starland County and are operated and maintained by contracted employees. The McLaren Dam Recreational area offers users potable water, communal kitchens and well defined campsites. Located approximately 80 kilometres north and east of Drumheller near the intersection of Secondary Highways 589 and 851, the McLaren Dam’s location is marked by signage leading to its exact location at Township Road 33-4 and Range Road 18-2. Stocked with trout since the mid-1970’s, McLaren Dam has a reputation for some sizeable trout being taken (up to 16 inches by some reports) and has gained a strong following of local anglers. The second opportunity to catch the elusive ‘Badlands Trout’, is offered at the Michichi Recreational site located within Michichi’s corporate limits. Although the water’s surface area is smaller than the McLaren site, Michichi has benefited from the fish stocking program of the provincial government for well over 25 years. The campground and day use facilities at Michichi are all in great shape and drinking water and washroom facilities are well maintained. Michichi’s smaller size allows for more shore access with a lesser amount of walking required to find your own fishing spot. The recreation area that contains the reservoir is located approximately 20 kilometres from downtown Drumheller, just north of the intersection of Township Road 30-4 and Range Road 19-0. When travelling on Highway 9 north of Drumheller, the intersection of Twp Rd. 30-4 is hard to miss because of the railroad crossing bearing the title ‘Dinosaur Junction’ just metres east of the

highway. Just a few kilometres east on 30-4 and a left turn at Range Rd. 19-0 and Michichi’s trout await. A third lake that produces some big fish is the Crawling Valley Reservoir located south of Drumheller approximately 70 kilometres. To get there travel east from Drumheller to Rosedale and turn south on Highway 56, just passed the Hussar turnoff is an intersection with Secondary Highway 561, head east approximately 18 kilometres and look for the signs. Crawling Valley Reservoir is on the south side of the highway. The lake has a good variety of fish, and fishermen often return to Drumheller boasting of the size of the fish they catch. Walleye in the lake are big but regulations state they are catch and release only, as the stocks are being replenished. Last but not least of the Badlands offerings is the Red Deer River. Drumheller is located in what is referred to as Reach 4 of the Red Deer River’s Integrated Management Plan. In the Plan, Reach 4 is described as “ a warm water fishery as indicated by the absence of trout species. All sport fish species are native and include walleye, sauger, pike, goldeye and mooneye. Avid anglers know the Red Deer River can produce some

trophy size fish. There are a number of easily accessible riverbank fishing spots from within the designated town parks and some old timers in the area might point you to some other prime locations. To quote a common bumper sticker, “A bad day of fishing is a lot better than a great day at work.

Local rider Gary Chambers was put to a test of endurance this weekend after his team won their category at the 24 Hours of Adrenalin mountain bike event in Canmore. It revolves around a massive relay race, where solo riders or teams of up to ten people compete to ride as many laps as possible

in 24 hours, though participants are only required to complete one lap. “The weather was beautiful, and we won our class, so it was a lot of fun,” said Chambers. Chambers’ team rode 24 laps of 17 kilometres in the 24 hour timeframe, switching off within the team of four. The event took place Saturday, July 24. “The laps take roughly an hour,” said Chambers. The route winds through the picturesque mountains and parks near Canmore, Alberta. Chambers has done it eight times in the last 12 years, and doesn’t see why he wouldn’t compete again. This is also the second year in a row his team has taken first in their category. 24 Hours of Adrenalin claims the title of “fastest growing mountain bike event series in North America”. The race generally favours speed over technical skill and begins with a 600-metre Le Mans start where racers run to retrieve their bikes. In addition to placings, awards are presented for Best Theme and Best Helmet.

AUTOS Husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, friend. Farmer, carpenter, electrician, community leader and church man, Mason, board member, dancer, joker: these things and many more describe the extraordinary life of Merton Melvin McGhee who died peacefully on the morning of July 27, 2010 after a brief stay at the Drumheller Regional Hospital. He is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 52 years, and by his devoted sons Stacy, Randy and Todd and their wives, Ruth, Joan, and Faye. Mert was also a loving grandfather to Bradley, Alyse, Keara, Delaney, Gavin, Michael, Curtis and Courtney. He is also survived by his four sisters, Verna, Elzaida, Lois and Joan; he was predeceased by his brother Calvin. Mert was born on October 7, 1933 in Drumheller, and raised on the family farm in the Orkney District. After a brief stint in Calgary training as an electrician and welder, Mert returned, in 1959 – with Jean, his bride of two years – back to the farm to stay. Mert loved his chosen career and the community in which he lived and contributed much through his leadership in 4-H, as an elder with the Presbyterian church, president of the Orkney Athletic Association, member of the agricultural advisory board for the municipality, and as past Master of Symbol Lodge Number 93. He eventually moved off the farm into Drumheller in 1997, handing over the farm to his youngest son, Todd. He never really quit farming; as long as his health would allow, he was up at the farm helping in whatever way he could. Mert was also an avid curler, skiier, and hockey player, spent countless summers playing softball and tennis. He enjoyed dancing on Saturday evenings with his wife Jean, and playing all sorts of card games, Dominoes and Mexican Train with many good friends over the years, all evidence of his very fun-loving and social nature. Mert loved traveling, too, and had many memorable trips with family and friends. Mert McGhee, lover of people, of life and the land he worked, will be fondly remembered and always deeply loved by his family and many dear friends. He leaves a wonderful legacy as a family man and community man. The McGhee family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Drumheller Regional Hospital, Drs Olfert and Racz, Homecare, and the many family and friends who have extended such warm care and assitance to Mert through these recent years. A private committal service was held at the Sarcee Butte on Friday, July 30. A memorial service is being held on Saturday, July 31, at 11 a.m., Knox United Church in Drumheller. 30c

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Ziploc Omelets This is such a handy recipe, I am repeating it from a couple years ago. I know many people missed it last time. Whenever I serve these omelets, my guests love the idea. They are fun and easy to make! I like to do them when I have a crowd because everyone is able to add just the ingredients they prefer. Young kids always like to see what their own creation ends up to be. Perfect for camping and casual summer mornings. No pans to wash either! Take a good quality, medium ziploc bag and crack 2 or 3 eggs into it. Then add whatever fillings you like - or have the guests do their own. I set a plate of various items such as grated cheese, bacon bits, chopped ham, mushrooms, onion or chives, tomato, etc. Everyone simply chooses whatever they desire.

Then you seal the bag, removing the air as you do so. Vigorously shake the ziploc, breaking up the yolk. Place the bags into a pot of boiling water and wait 12 - 15 minutes. You can use this time to cut up some fruit or make toast to go along with the eggs. To serve, simply open the bag and out rolls a lovely omelet! I get each person to write their name on their own ziploc bag to make it easier to serve. They will firm up and set a little more once they are taken out of the water and passed around to the “owner.” You can also try this with a pot over the campfire. Several bags will cook at once. I usually have 8-10 per pot and it works out just fine. Happy summer, happy camping and happy eating!
