We deal with money every day but don’t give much thought to the small details. inSide Drumheller wonders: “Which coin weighs more: the loonie, or the toonie?”

Jenn Eskeland “I wanna say that it’s a trick question... but I’d have to say that the toonie is heavier.”

Tobias Storbo “I’d guess that the loonie would weigh more because it’s been around for many years.”

Summer is the season for road construction, and this summer it also means website construction at the Town of Drumheller. “One of the things we’re going to focus on is making it more user-friendly, especially for those using mobility devices (smartphones, tablets),” said Paul Salvatore, the Town’s Director of Community Services. He said the website redesign is to give users the easiest access to the information they need, or access with the shortest number of clicks. “We want to be really clear, so the frequently asked questions should be obvious. It’s also to enhance the customer service we provide in person,” said Salvatore. The website redesign is to give users the easiest access to the information they need, or access with the shortest number of clicks.

He said examples are people seeking hours of operations for Town facilities, and common answers to questions about different permits, processes and by-laws. A number of staff from different departments are also going over the website to recommend changes. Summer student Oliver Felisilda was hired with the Town to help with coordination of the project, so anyone experiencing problems using the website can call him at the Town’s main number, 403-823-6300. Salvatore said they’ll be selecting the company to do the web redesign for the Town over the next few days. The Town received ten responses, four of those from companies in the area, to their request for proposal for the web redesign. Salvatore said the Town website sees about 15,000 visits per month.

It’s both a change of pace and a change of scenery for the Drumheller detachment’s newest RCMP member. Corporal Trent Sperlie moved from Saskatchewan to Drumheller, where the primary role for the 16-year RCMP veteran will be working with the Drumheller Penitentiary. Sperlie said he and wife Candice, along with their dog Sasha, would like to plant some roots here for awhile. “Drumheller seems like a really nice spot. We’re intrigued by the de inSi

As residents of Drumheller welcome the start of summer, staff at The Drumheller Mail/ inSide Drumheller greet a new change of their own; the addition of a new member to their team. A recent graduate from Drumheller Valley Secondary School, Lauren Main, 17, will be working at The Mail for nine weeks throughout the months of July and August. This opportunity, stimulated from connections at the high school, is one Main is eager to fulfill, as her central goal after the summer is to pur-

sue a communications program at the Vancouver Island University in British Columbia. Main initially found her passion for writing earlier on in high school, but through the encouraging staff at DVSS, she was able to direct her skills and interests into a worthwhile future career in journalism. Before attending DVSS, Main began her high school career at Delia School, deciding to transfer for her first and final year at a new school last September. “It was a change, definitely.” Main said, “but it was one I was keen to take on.” Main hopes to hone her skills in journalism

Corporal Sperlie is part of the local RCMP’s General Investigative Section (GIS), and will be doing a significant amount of work up at the penitentiary, as well as assisting local RCMP members. GIS takes on bigger investigations and helps RCMP when needed in drug investigations, sexual assaults, and major assaults. Sperlie is a native of Saskatchewan, and prior to the year and a bit he’s spent with GIS, was a member on the drug unit in Saskatoon for five years.

Sunny skies bless Passion Play Tournament The tournament dinner featured a dessert auction with fantastic desserts donated by restaurants and bakers in the area. In all, $2,200 was raised through the auction and the desserts were fully enjoyed by those attending the golf banquet.

80 golfers enjoyed a stellar day of golf on Friday, June 20 at the 17th Annual Passion Play Golf Tournament. The sun shone brightly after two days of rain and the course was in beautiful shape. Drumheller can take great pride in what is truly one of the best and most interesting courses in Western Canada. Darrel Janz of CTV News has been attending the tournament since it began and challenged everyone at the tournament to bring their friends in 2015 and help grow the tournament back to a full compliment of golfers. The Passion Play Tournament brings golfers from all over Alberta. This year the winning team was from Three Hills and the second place team was from Rosebud. Third place went to Darrel Janz and his team after tying for second but losing in the chip o.

Plans are underway for next year’s tournament. Registration will be available at the Passion Play website.

Golfers enjoyed the generosity of local business and they were able to have multiple contests and draws on each hole and at the end of the day each golfer went home with at least one prize. This made for a great ďŹ nish to a wonderful day. Plans are underway for next year’s tournament. Registration will be available at the Passion Play website (www. canadianpassionplay. com) in the fall.

Council Notes From the Regular Meeting of Drumheller Town Council Monday, June 30, 2014 Councillor Sharel Shoff was sworn in as Deputy Mayor for the months of July and August 2014. •••••• Council approved a motion to accept the summer calendar for Council meetings as printed. The next Council meeting is scheduled for July 28, and one following for August 25. Committee meetings will be called by the Mayor as deemed necessary. •••••• The Mayor noted the Town had received its grant money under the 2014/15 Municipal Policing Assistance and the New Police Officer programs. The funds have been electronically transferred to the town. •••••• Chief Administrative Officer Ray Romanetz updated Council on Town flood mitigation matters. He attended the second meeting of the provincial Floodway Review Committee with Brad Wiebe of Palliser Regional Municipal Services. He noted that floodway description relates to natural areas, ball diamonds, and parks; the challenges will be with buildings that are in the floodway now and how to grandfather. The CAO recapped the Town's June 19 meeting with half a dozen provincial government departments. He stated the most important point that required some clarification were the floodway maps. The province has agreed to prepare new maps that show both natural and mitigated flows. They were unable to provide a time frame to the Town for their completion of this work. Brad Wiebe of Palliser offered to assist the province with the flood mapping. The Town's flood mitigation report submitted to the province was also discussed at length, and Town staff are continuing to research the province's prior commitments to flood mitigation and its costs in Drumheller. The CAO is also currently working to receive email confirmation of further verbal commitments from the province. Romanetz will follow up with the province on questions from area residents regarding property salvage if they were offered home relocation. •••••• Director of Infrastructure Services Allan Kendrick updated Council on Petro Canada (Munchie) Park. He spoke with Patrice Wolf of the Badlands Community Garden Society, who are cleaning up the park and potentially folding after July 1 this year. Portions of the park are not completed, and the Town has concerns with the design as the park that was built was not the park that Council approved. After Council discussion, the decision was made to bring the matter back to Council for the July 28 meeting. •••••• After a brief recess, Council moved to in-camera matters. •••••• Following in-camera, Council reverted to the regular Council meeting. Council approved a motion to sell a Town owned vacant lot to the adjacent potential property owner in Nacmine at fair market value. Council approved a motion to sublet Ojay's Cafe in the Badlands Community Facility to the owner of Drumheller's Whiskey Bar.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

medal. Chambers said this season’s coaching between her and fellow coach Eric Doucette focused mainly on skill building and positioning. She said a lot of the team was new this year, only about half the team having played soccer before. Chambers said highlights of the season were the team making it to the district finals, and their determination. “That was one of the goals and seeing a bunch of kids playing together as a team. Even if we were down, they kept playing to the end of the game.” Coaching also focused on the importance of players being respectful to everyone, she said. The U12s played a game versus the U14

Chambers, Samantha Denton, Michael Levkovytsky, Cole Sieppert, Mackenzie Cassidy, Zoe Boland, Coach Eric Doucette. Absent: Samuel Gridley, Aimee Wegleitner.

The Drumheller Dragons’ latest addition is a Canmore-born player. The Dragons have added 17-yearold Defenseman Tristan Thompson of Canmore to this year’s roster. Tristan played in Strathmore last season for the UFA Bisons, where he led the AAA League as the top scoring defenseman. The Bisons are affiliated with the Dragons, which means they were able to bring him up to play with the team during the playoff run this spring. “Tristan is the type of player who plays with passion, heart and character while playing a very physical game. We are proud to have Tristan join the Dragons and look forward to helping him attain his goals on and off the ice,” said Dragons GM/ Head Coach Brian Curran. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to play for the Drumheller

Dragons and play for one of the best coaches in junior hockey, Brian Curran,” said Thompson.

Canmore native Tristan Thompson, 17, recently signed to play with the Drumheller Dragons.

The Dragons start their season in an exhibition series versus Brooks, with an away game August 20 and a home game August 22.
