OPINION Fall completion date planned for East Coulee water line Michael James | inSide Drumheller
Municipal water will soon be owing to East Coulee. At their meeting on July 2, Town Council awarded the contract for the construction of the East Coulee water transmission line. It is estimated the line will be complete by the fall. “It will be completed by the Fall. It’s 100 days to ďŹ nish their contract,â€? said Mayor Terry Yemen. Knibb Development Ltd. was chosen to construct the line for a total cost, including engineering work, of $3,989,593. The vast majority of construction is being covered by a grant from the province, which was
awarded in May 2011. The Town of Drumheller is only responsible for 10 per cent of the cost. The line will bring municipal water to the western edge of East Coulee where there will be a ďŹ ll station. The line will help increase the ďŹ re protection for the area. There are no plans to build distribution lines throughout East Coulee or Lehigh, where residents rely on sandpoint wells for their water. “When it’s ďŹ nished, there will be a ďŹ ll station in East Coulee and that’s it. If, a few years down the road, they need water, it’s there for them,â€? said Yemen. The process to build the transmission line
to East Coulee has been ongoing for years. Late in 2011, Council debated building the transmission line and distribution lines throughout East Coulee and Lehigh. The distribution lines would cost residents in those areas just under $16,000 per household. After vehement opposition, plans for the distribution lines were shelved, but considering the $3.4 million grant from the province, it was decided to continue with plans to build the transmission line, with an option for acreages along the way to hook up. It is expected construction will start within the next month.

The Dino Arts Society would like to introduce Drumheller to Sam and Demitri. inSide Drumheller searched for names for the two latest additions to the Drumheller Dinosaur landscape and hosted a contest to find a name. The DinoArts Committee has selected the name Dimitri for the Dinosaur sitting on a bench at the intersection of Centre Street and 3rd Ave. As for the latest instal-
lation, the Pachycephalosaurus on a motorcycle in the Brick parking lot, his name is Sam. It was 10-year-old Kalina Roberts of Wainwright, Alberta named Demitri in a visit to the valley. Dan Hird of Drumheller came up with Sam for the motorcycling dinosaur. He named it after Sam Drumheller, one of the founding fathers of the community. For their efforts both have won tickets to the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. Meet Sam. Dan Hird came up with this Dinosaur’s new name.

•••••• Mayor Terry Yemen opened the meeting by congratulating and thanking everyone involved in this year's Canada Day celebrations. •••••• Allan Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services, presented a request for decision to award the contract for the East Coulee Water Transmission Line to Knibb Development Ltd. for $3,489,593. Engineering costs for the project were budgeted at $500,000 for a total cost of $3,989,593. Councillor Jay Garbutt asked why the engineering costs were so high. CAO Ray Romanetz explained during the engineering study, more testing was required at the points where the water line would cross under the river. The high engineering costs reflect the costs of drilling during the testing. Councillor Sharel Shoff took a moment to reiterate the water line would not be going into East Coulee and would terminate on the western edge of the community. Councillor Lisa Hansen-Z acharuk asked if Knibb Development Ltd. had done a project on this scale before. Mr. Kendrick assured everyone that Knibb had the experience necessary, as they were the ones who did the water line from Rosedale to Cambria. Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk then asked if there would be an issue with Knibb, because they are also contracted to do road maintenance in Drumheller. It was felt by administration there would be no issue in completing the water line. A motion to award the contract was carried unanimously. •••••• Byron Nagazina, Director of Corporate Services, presented a request for decision to change the Town's benefits provider to Industrial Alliance. Mr. Nagazina explained the Town would save roughly $22,000 per year and its employees would take home roughly $100 extra per month. The Town's current benefits are through AMSC Sun Life and Blue Cross. Councillor Garbutt expressed he had no conflict of interest in the matter as the current benefits did not involve him. Mr. Nagazina highlighted a concern where seven retirees are currently taking advantage of a $5,000 retiree death benefit. The new provider would not be able to match the death benefit. CAO Romanetz felt the next step would be to discuss the benefits change with Town staff. Councill Andrew Berdahl felt that discussion should take place before Council were to make their decision. A motion to change benefits providers passed with Councillor Berdahl opposed. ••••••

Robber pleads guilty, sentenced to three years Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
The suspect charged with robbing the Drumheller Liquor Store two weeks ago pleaded guilty in his first court appearance last week. Steven Bodie appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, June 21 he plead guilty to robbery. On Wednesday, June 19, at about 9:30 p.m., Bodie was at the Drumheller Liquor in downtown Drumheller. When he approached the cashier, he showed her what appeared to be a gun and demanded cash. The cashier complied and Bodie made away with an unspecified amount of cash, under $1,000. Drumheller RCMP attended to the scene to investigate. Upon review of surveillance video police has an ac-
curate description of the robber and what he was wearing. At 10:40 p.m., Bodie was located and arrested. Bodie was found in possession of the money and investigation reveal that what appeared to be a gun used in the robbery, was a toy lighter. Bodie, 25, admitted to being a cocaine addict and has three prior related offenses, however they were characterized as a “mugging” sort of offences. He has resided in Drumheller for less than a year. Judge Les Grieve accepted a joint submission from the crown prosecutor and duty counsel, who represented Bodie of three years in custody. This takes in to account aggravating factors of a long criminal accord and the mitigating factor of the earliest guilty plea possible.

Valley wears generosity on sleeve Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
Drumheller’s sense of community was on display as neighbours worked towards protecting each other’s families and property. After the water subsided, the spirit of giving has continued. The high water events in Drumheller and throughout the province have inspired great acts of generosity to help families rebuild and move on. NewCap Radio in Alberta didn’t wait for the water to fall. Last Wednesday, it hosted the Alberta Rising Radio-thon. This ran from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise funds for the Red Cross to help ood victims in south and central Alberta. The endeavour through all the Alberta New Cap radio stations raised more than $70,000 for ood relief. Drum FM also teamed up with local businesses and held a one-day blitz fundraiser on Thursday. Locally it brought in about $25,000 for the local Salvation Army to
use for relief. “We are blown away with the amount of support over the last week and didn’t think we would raise this much, our original goal was $1,000,â€? said station manager Ryan Semchuk. While these actions were able to draw upon the larger community to make a dierence, Mrs. Scott’s Grade 5 class at St. Anthony’s started small, and by the end inspired a community eort. Mrs. Scott’s students decided on Wednesday to have a popcorn sale to raise funds for ood relief, as the ood affected two members of their class. The students’ eorts were inspiring raising $500. This inspired the parents of the students to match the donation, bring their total up to $1,000. But it doesn’t stop there, Cam Christianson of Canalta saw the merit of the project and he too matched the donation bringing the total up to $2,000, to go to the local Salvation Army.
Having arrived in the community hours before to their new posting to replace Lts. Matt and Rachel Sheils, Lts. Laurie and Dusty Sauder of the Salvation Army saw ďŹ rst hand the generosity of the community. In the meantime, the sta at St. Anthony have also started to collect some funds. Christ the Redeemer School Division encompasses schools in communities that were devastated by the oods. Our Lady of the Snows in Canmore, as well as Notre Dame Collegiate, Holy Spirit
Academy and St. Like Outreach in High River all closed for the year when the ooding hit. A number of students and sta have been evacuated and saw their homes destroyed. In all, the sta at St. Anthony’s has collected $1,250, and Canalta again matched the funds bringing the total up to $2,500. Puppeteer group looks at “The Bigger Picture” submitted | inSide Drumheller
Drumheller’s Fellowship Baptist Church is expressing themselves in a unique way this summer through PuppetUp. On Canada Day, they performed their show, “The Bigger Picture”, which uses puppetry and drama to look at the world through a larger lens. “It was interesting that the puppeteers
wanted to explore this theme and present it in their own creative fashion,” said Wendy Fletcher, director of PuppetUp. The group was originally going to debut their show on June 23, but when the town was threatened by floods, the members chose to postpone and help others. “A choice had to be made; do we still have the show as scheduled or do we help oth-
ers with flood relief? It was truly a choice of us or others. The puppeteers were quick to choose the bigger picture…others. Most of PuppetUp volunteered throughout the weekend in different capacities all with the view of helping the community. Many of the puppeteers commented that our assistance in the community was the real show. It was very moving for me,” said Fletcher. During their Canada
Day show, PuppetUp began with a float in the parade and then ended the day with a show, which helped fundraise for Compassion Canada and flood relief in Drumheller. PuppetUp is looking for volunteers between the ages of 12 and 18. Practices include intensive workshops for team and skill building. Those interested are asked to contact Fletcher at the Fellowship Baptist Church.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal
reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Starland County owns a very unique winter transporter and they had it out on display at the Canada Day Parade. The 1951 Bombardier C-18s has the capacity to carry 11 passengers, is powered by a six cylinder Chrysler engine, and two tracks ready to take on the deepest of snow. Starland CAO Ross Rawlusyk says the county bought the machine in December of 1951 and it appears it was a heavy snow year because in reviewing council minutes during the same period, he notes a special 1 per cent mill tax

Albertans heading outdoors in increasingly hot summer temperatures are reminded to protect themselves and watch out for others who may experience potentially harmful effects of the sun, including heat-related exhaustion and sunstroke. To avoid sunburns and heat-related exhaustion: –Apply a sunscreen of at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30, at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Be sure the SPF 30 screens out both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply frequently (as directed on product label). –Wear a widebrimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/ UVB CSA certified seal). –Wear light-coloured long pants and longsleeved shirts that cover skin. –Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated, even before you feel thirsty. –Consider resched-

Now we are setting up registration centres across southern Alberta so residents in downstream communities can apply for the money they need to rebuild.” Applicants should go to the registration centre. Anyone planning to apply later should continue cleaning and repairing their property, saving receipts and taking photos of damage. The application process for those unable
to attend a registration centre will be announced at a later date. A permanent office for the 2013 Southern Alberta Disaster Recovery Program will also be established in Calgary later this summer. There will also be more registration centres in southern Alberta announced later in July. Disaster recovery programs provide financial assistance for homeowners to repair or rebuild their primary residence and other uninsurable property damage and loss. They also help communities, small businesses and agricul-
tural producers recover from disasters. They are intended to cover the costs of returning essential property to the condition it was in before a disaster happened. “We understand that these floods have been traumatic for everyone, and that’s why we are moving as fast as possible to get help into these communities,” said Griffiths. “If you’re unable to apply in person, or do not have urgent needs and plan to apply later, there will be other ways to access this funding.”

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll write about my training and what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned. Only two months to go until the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a hard couple weeks for me. Right after the DinoFest Triathlon I was feeling great and starting to rev up my training. Then, during a run, pain shot through my left quadricep. I stopped, walked for a bit until the pain went away,
and then started running again. After a minute, the pain returned and I was forced to head home. I took a break for several days, which seemed to help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing your motion of running, you might be overstretching that muscles. Over a long period, it might strain, or you could pull it,â&#x20AC;? said Gavin Makse, athletic director at St. Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The usual treatment is RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. But, on hamstrings you want to use heat.â&#x20AC;? There is a laundry list of
common running injuries, many of which Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had. Early on in my training, shin splints plagued me a little. Shin splints occur when the muscles covering the shin become inďŹ&#x201A;amed. Generally, icing the shins for 15-20 minutes and elevated helps. The other persistent injury Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dealing with is a side stitch, which generally comes if I push myself too hard. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve run into some trouble with the heat. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to come down with heat exhaustion, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to stay hydrated. On days when running, try to drink one to two cups more water than usual. The best treatment for most injuries is prevention. Stretching and warming up before running helps.
â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the things a lot of people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do and the reason they get injuries is inadequate stretching, not just before, but after running too,â&#x20AC;? said Makse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually for about ďŹ ve minutes with some light stretching, you should be good to go. If you try running on cold muscles, that could lead to injuries.â&#x20AC;? What you do after running can be just as important. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then, you want to do a cool-down after you ďŹ nish your run. Do some light jogging or walking and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to do stretching for longer,â&#x20AC;? said Makse. Other ways to help prevent injuries are running on even ground, making sure you have adequate footwear, and cross-training.

The Rage, Drumheller’s bantam girls softball team, is celebrating after another medal finish at provincials. Last weekend, the Rage headed to Leduc to battle for the title of U16 C provincial champions. The Rage continued to dominate on Sunday with a 12-4 win over the Red Deer Rage and 6-2 win over the Killam Thunder, who defeated the Drumheller Rage two years ago in the gold medal game at provincials. “The game was unbelievable, both teams played incredibly well. We took an early lead and never looked back, defeating them by a score of 6-2. We had tremendous pitching, some incredible defence and the intensity of the game was beyond anything we’ve seen this year,” said Shari Fournier, coach of the Rage. After the round robin, the Rage were in first place. On Monday morning, they lost against their league rivals, the Calgary West Valley Sliders. “Both teams are pretty evenly matched, each winning and losing 2 games this year. Unfortunately we just came out very flat and struggled the entire game. I

The Rage headed to the bronze medal game against the East Central Kaos, where they won the game, 12-11, and the bronze medal. The Rage had won gold last year at provincials, but are happy with their performance. “Although we were hoping for a gold none of us are disappointed with a bronze. We moved up an entire division in provincial play this year which is a big step for the team. We did not have the competition in league that we had hoped for, so our preparation going into provincials wasn’t as strong as we had last season, but we still managed to play extremely well. Our “gold” medal game was the game against Killam and we won. Unfortunately, that came a day too early,” said Fournier. The Rage will had a chance for some redemption on Wednesday, July 3, against the West Valley Sliders in
the final game of league championships. The Rage lost and had to settle for silver in their league. “We won silver, but it wasn’t our best night. We just couldn’t get our bats going,” said Fournier. The season is over for the Rage. They’ll be taking a break over the summer and then taking a look at the next season. At the moment, the number of players is leaving the future of the Rage in doubt. “With such a small team, we’re always fighting will having enough players. With the age range of girls we have, we’re going to be in two different divisions. We have five girls who would moved up to a U18 division and the rest would remain in U16. At this point we’re not sure what will happen,” said Fournier. “Hopefully we can keep the team together so the girls always have a place to play.” The Rage are encouraging any girls interested in playing to register in the fall.
