The Town of Drumheller is celebrating the completion of one of the latest and largest projects in the town’s history. On Wednesday, July 4, the Badlands Community Facility was given it’s grand opening. The building had its soft opening at the beginning of March. At the celebration, residents and dignitaries, such as MP Crowfoot Kevin Sorenson, MLA for Drumheller-Stettler Rick Strankman, and the Drumheller Town Council, gathered in the main foyer and on the upper level. The celebrations began with speeches by dignitaries and those who worked hard to make the building a reality. Sorenson was excited to see the building essentially finished. “It feels good. It’s a building is going to be used for a long time. I’ve driven by many times over the course of the construction, but once you see it finished, it really is a great feeling. The facility, as time goes on, will enhance the community,” said Sorenson. Afterwards, Sorenson read greetings from the provincial Minister of Transportation, Ric McIvor, who could not be in attendance. In the provincial greetings, McIvor praised the facility, stating it was something the whole region could be proud of. Mayor Terry Yemen then spoke on behalf of the Town of Drumheller. After the ceremony, Yemen expressed how happy he was with the building and gave some insight into the future of the project. “It feels incredible, we’ve had a great response. This is one of the most significant things built in our town. It’s up there with the Tyrrell Museum, hospital, and penitentiary,” said Yemen. “We’re focused on

fundraising right now, so we can move ahead with phase two of the facility.” Tony Lacher, co-chair of the steering committee, and Koren McDougald, cabinet member of the fundraising committee, expressed their pride in the facility and thank those who helped make it possible. Afterwards, members of the Drumheller Town Council, previous council, and Sorenson gathered to cut the ribbon, which was tied across the main stairs. Mayor Yemen and Bryce Nimmo unveiled a plaque, listing those who helped make the facility possible. Attendees were treated to a barbecue, cake, and live music by Hoodoo Voodoo by the banquet halls and outdoor patio. Between cloud bursts, work is back on track this summer for the completion of the Heritage Garden. The Badlands Community Garden Society has been diligently working on the park, commonly known as PetroCanada Park, creating a downtown green space that will allow residents and visitors to reect, and enjoy, as well as learn about native species of plants and xeriscaping. Sorry it’s been awhile but I have been busy gardening. I was asked about shade plants for hanging baskets. So I decided to try and do another article with a little bit of info and what I try to do with my stuff. We all know the standard plants people grow in the shade. Begonia’s, Dragons Wing Begonia, Impatients (single & double), Coleus, Lamium, Hosta, Heuchera, Lobellia, Fuchsia, Calla Lily, Caladium, Elephant Ears. There are few of the common basket fillers, Potatoe Vine, Torenia (Wishbone Flower), Creeping Jenny, Vinca, Bacopia. These and a few that I have missed are readily available at most of the greenhouses. The most important part of hanging baskets or containers in shady areas is don’t be afraid to try something different. Something that doesn’t normally grow in the shade may do okay and maybe it’s simply that it won’t be that dark, dark green, it will be paler, or not as variegated. Grass makes a great addition and will add interest and height. A lot of the house plants we see everyday at the grocery store make great fillers in a container and will hang over a basket very nicely. Some of the most common mistakes in the shade

are over watering. We forget the plants don’t sit in the sun all day, so they don’t dry out as quickly as the other planters may. Test before you give it another shot of water, if it’s wilting it may be too wet. Also we can go the other way and think that because they are in the shade we can water them once a week and they’ll be fine. It will really depend on what kind of container you have them in, do they have drainage, are they in deep shade or light shade, are they exposed to the wind. These kinds of things will make a difference to all plants, not just the ones in containers. Temperature makes a difference too; if we have had a cool spring like this one it may take the shaded plants a little longer to get established, but once the heat comes they will come into their own. The other problem that I have had in the past is Powdery Mildew especially on my Begonias. To try and lesson the chance of this problem always water in the early morning so the plants have the full day to dry. If they need another drink in the evening make sure it’s done early enough that the leaves dry off before it starts to get dark and cooler. There are several sprays out there that can help if applied soon enough. Well hope this helps Courtney, and thanks for the question.

One of Canada’s funniest comedians paid a visit to Drumheller this week. Ron James, star of The Ron James Show on CBC and numerous stand up performances throughout the country, including Just for Laughs, was in town ďŹ lming an “Ode to the Roadâ€?. inSide Drumheller had the opportunity to sit down for lunch at the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club with Ron and learn about Drumheller’s starring role and a bit about Ron himself. How’s lunch? “This is a great looking club! Real chicken! [tastes sandwich] This is, hands down, the best club sandwich I’ve had in this country.â€? So, what is an “Ode to the Roadâ€?? “Road Odes are a avour of a larger meal. It’s the most quintessential element of Canadiana in my show. We like to y under the radar. They’re not spectacle driven, they’re authentically driven with real people and real places that speak and represent the heart of people and place. In all the places we land, we try to ďŹ nd comedic mileage in them, be aably subversive, and its all meant to be fun for everyone from 8 to 80. If they get the essence of the rebel voice in some of the pieces, that’s great.â€? We try to give everybody their due, have it aably subversive, fun, and embrace the mystery of people and place.â€? Is this the ďŹ rst time you’ve been to Drumheller? “Yeah man! I’ve always played Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray. I’ve always passed the Drumheller sign and I always meant to turn o, but never got a chance.â€?

Now that you’ve turned o, what do you think? “It’s brilliant! It’s otherworldly with the badlands. I’m looking forward to smelling the sage. I’ve got a day o, so I’m heading to Horsethief Canyon to do some hiking, it’ll be amazing.â€? You must see a lot of the country through these Odes. “We’re having a riot and travelling the road with a select group of people who get it and see their faces light up when they meet dierent people and see dierent parts of the country. It really warms my heart to see other people experiencing Canada with the same enthusiasm and authentic soul note that I’ve had for the last 15 years.â€? You’ve been travelling the country for a long time with your stand up act. What brought you to a career in comedy? “I was broke and out of work in Los Angeles in the early 1990’s. I was down there to do a series, which was cancelled. I stayed for three years and struggled. I raised my daughter until she was ďŹ ve down there and thought there was no way I wanted to have her indoctrinated into the American education system, so we came home. The American dream is that the individual is responsible for what they get out of life, which is sort of an Alberta ethos, I suppose. I applied that lesson during some days of struggle to achieve my Canadian dream. All I wanted was to come home and embrace the mythology of the country I love. I developed my stand up act in 1995, worked for free, did stage work whenever I could, and ba-

sically started over. I had spent 17 years being an actor, waiting for the phone to ring and someone else giving me a job. Then I wanted to use my brains and make sense of the world on my own terms.� How have things worked out since then? “I love it! It’s everything I wanted to get out of the game, which is to make a living, work with good people, and embrace the country. You don’t have a life for seven months of the years, but I had a lot of time to watch the paint dry when I was out of work. I swore twenty years ago if I had steady work, I’d never complain about it and I don’t.� After years doing stand up and various other projects, how did the show happen? “I had written a pilot and they asked me to write something that skewered a bit closer to what I do on stage. The Alberta Badlands are famous the world over for their abundance of fossils. From the miniscule fish, amphibians, and reptiles to the colossal dinosaurs. Charged with unearthing these creatures are palaeontologists. However, many amateur fossil hunters have found some of the most amazing finds. For example, Black Beauty, the enormous Tyrannosaurus rex at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, was found by two young boys. Here is some advice to help you hunt for Alberta’s prehistoric treasures. First and foremost is to know what age and type of rock you are looking in. In the badlands the rocks are from the late Cretaceous. Also, fossil are found generally in sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone. “You want to look in sedimentary rocks. The sandstones are usually the best,” said Dr. Don Henderson, curator of dinosaurs at the Tyrrell Museum. Once you’ve found a suitable area, pack plenty of water, good shoes, camera, and if possible a GPS. Also, if it has rained within the past 12 hours, it is generally not safe to hike, due to the extremely slippery bentonite that covers the area. From there, it helps to know what kinds of animals can be found in the area and to form a mental picture of what you’re looking for. Also, remain focused. “Don’t let your mind wander. If you’re walking around

and not paying attention, you’re going to miss stuff. You really have to think about what you’re looking at on the ground,” suggested Henderson. If you find a bone, there are a few ways to determine if it is indeed a fossil. Fossils here are generally reddish brown in colour and are heavier due to being essentially turned to stone. Bones that are white and light will most likely be from a modern animal, such as a deer. Once you find a fossil do not remove it from the ground. The temptation may be great, but it is best left to the professionals. Take a photo of the fossil with something for scale, take photos of the surroundings, mark the location on a map or GPS, and inform the Tyrrell Museum. “If something looks significant, take a photo with something for scale next to it. Plus, there could be bits around what you’re looking at and even though fossils are heavy, they are extremely brittle. Think of them as being made from glass. If you drop them, they’re done. If you put even a little stress on them, they snap. They really are fragile,” said Henderson. Excavating fossils anywhere in Alberta is illegal under the Alberta Historical Resources Act. The public is allowed to surface collect, meaning a fossil is resting on the ground. A scientific permit is needed to excavate. Under the act, those caught excavating could face up to $50,000 in fines and/or one year in jail. “The whole point of having the requirements, you need special training and expertise to safely remove a fossil from the ground. Our hope is significant fossils get preserved and collected professionally, so they’re available for display and scientific research,” said Dan Spivak, who is responsible for resource management with the Tyrrell Museum.

Also, collecting fossils on private land is prohibited without the landowners permission. Collecting fossils in provincial or national parks, such as Midland Provincial Park (which is around the Tyrrell Museum) or Dinosaur Provincial Park is strictly forbidden. While it may be disappointing that the public cannot excavate fossils, the goal of the act and palaeontologists is to preserve these amazing creatures as long as possible. The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist Anyone who knows me well is aware of my soft spot for hot wings. If they are offered on a menu, chances are I will look no further for my food choice, except perhaps a salad – my next favorite item. When the wings are served, as they should be, with blue cheese dip, carrot and celery sticks, then I am one happy camper.

¼ cup Frank’s Hot Sauce 2 Tbsp. butter, melted 1 lb. chicken breasts or cutlets (boneless, skinless) Combine butter and sauce. Reserve 2 Tbsp. Brush on chicken while grilling until no longer pink (about 8 minutes). Or you can marinate the chicken in the sauce first. Once cooked, let it rest for 5 minutes. Then slice and toss with the remaining sauce. Dressing: 1/3 c. buttermilk ¼ c. crumbled blue cheese 3 Tbsp. plain yogurt 1 Tbsp. cider vinegar ¼ tsp. sugar

Whisk all ingredients to toss over prepared salad. Can be made ahead to let flavours blend. Salad: 8 c. torn leaf lettuce 1 c. sliced cucumber 1 small shredded carrot ½ c. chopped celery Divide ingredients amongst 4 plates (or toss in one large salad dish). Top with the chicken, then drizzle dressing over. (I actually sprinkled with more crumbled blue cheese) If you like the crunchy, fried style of chicken wings, you could first dip the chicken in milk or egg , bread it with panko crumbs and then fry or bake it. This would take away from the idea of a lighter fare, but still taste mighty good.

A movie crew was busy this past week in Horsethief Canyon filming the opening scene for The Seventh Son. Filming has now wrapped up. Shooting was focused on scenes of a young Master Gregory imprisoning the witch Mother Malkin and the passage of time over the centuries after. Jeff Bridges, who plays an elder Master Gregory, arrived via helicopter on Tuesday, but only stayed roughly two hours before departing. That’s a wrap. The Seventh Son, a new motion picture being released by Legendary Pictures (Batman Begins, The Hangover, Inception), began ďŹ lming here in Drumheller earlier this week. The crew is expected to be ďŹ nished in Drumheller today. The Seventh Son is based on The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. The story follows Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son, as he is trained by the Spook/Master Gregory to ďŹ ght the forces being unleashed by the evil Mother Malkin. Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) plays Tom Ward, Je Bridges (The Big Lebowski, Tron, True Grit) plays Gregory, and Julianne Moore (Crazy Stupid Love, Children of Men) is the malevolent witch Mother Malkin. Kit Harrington (HBO’s Game of Thrones) stars in the movie as well. The movie was ďŹ lmed exclusively in western Canada. Two weeks ago Mayor Terry Yemen and the Town’s Economic Development OfďŹ cer met with the production team and showed them around Horsethief Canyon. Drumheller was chosen as the setting for the opening sequence of the movie, showing the passage of time after a young Gregory imprisons Mother Malkin. Most of the shooting in Drumheller involved ďŹ lming scenes with a young Gregory and a time lapse sequence of the scenery. Bridges did appear briey on set on Tuesday. He arrived by helicopter during the day and stayed roughly two hours to coach the actor playing the young Gregory. Afterwards, he left via helicopter. A crew of roughly 80 stayed in Town for the shoot. No locals were involved, save for Gangster Enterprises who provided traďŹƒc control. To get to the locations where they were ďŹ lming, crews did create a small track for o road vehicles. After shooting is ďŹ nished, they will return the site to it’s natural beauty. The movie is expected to come out in the fall of 2013.

The upgraded East Coulee Wastewater System will continue to be located at 421 River Drive in East Coulee and will consist of pretreatment sedimentation chambers, a moving bed bioreactor with a UV disinfection system. The upgraded wastewater system will discharge a maximum daily flow of 116 m3 of treated effluent per day to the Red Deer River through an existing outfall in the NE 1/4 of Section 29 Township 27 Range 18 West of the 4th Meridian. A receiving water assessment is currently being conducted in conjunction with the Town of Drumheller. The upgraded wastewater system will be able to achieve more stringent treated effluent limits for Biological Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, Phosphorus and Ammonia.

St. Anthony's grade 6 students excel at divisional track meet submitted | inSide Drumheller

Grade 6 athletes at St. Anthony’s School finished the school year excelling at track and field. The Grade 6 Track and Field event was held in Okotoks on June 25 for all Christ the Redeemer schools. In all, eight schools participated. Grade 6 students participated in a variety of events including: Track Events – 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m as well as Field Events – Ball Throw, High Jump, Long Jump and Standing Broad Jump. St. Anthony’s students won ribbons in the following events: 60m – Derek Carriere won a 7th place ribbon, 100m – Bailey Calderon won an 8th place ribbon, 400m –

Kayla Finkbiner won a 4th place ribbon, 800m – Kayla Finkbiner won a 3rd place ribbon. Ball Throw – Derek Carriere won an 8th place ribbon, High Jump – Payton Zacharuk won a 1st place ribbon, Sydney MacDonald and Kayla Finkbiner won 2nd place ribbons, Long Jump – Carmanah Olbrich won a 7th place ribbon, Standing Broad Jump – Mokie Neale won a 4th place ribbon, Brigo Castillo won a 5th place ribbon and Tyler Cardamone won an 8th place ribbon. All students enjoyed their day at the track meet and look forward to track events in the future as they make the leap from elementary school to junior high.
