Royal visit reaches Alberta

The highest profiled tourists in Canada right now, their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, made their way to Alberta on Wednesday and toured the community of Slave Lake, which was devastated earlier this summer by wildfires. Along the way they graciously met residents. Joe McWilliams of the Slave Lake Lakeside Leader caught some candid moments as the couple lifted spirits of the community. He graciously provided inSide Drumheller with these photos. After the tour the couple took a much-needed break and resurfaced in Calgary Thursday afternoon to a stampede greeting.

The Badlands Community Garden Society has received final permission to begin the Heritage Garden on the site known as Petro Canada Park. The question is with all the projects the small but dedicated group has taken on, where will they find the time? The society received approval from the Town of Drumheller earlier this spring to build the Heritage Garden, which will create a usable green space in the downtown core that also serves as an educative resource, demonstrating native species and xeriscaping. Recently they received the green light from the owner of the land to go ahead with the project. They hope to get working on this space this month. “I think it is going to be nice, I am glad we finally got through all the hurdles and can finally start planting,” said Chris Marion of the Badlands Community Garden Society. Marion said to watch for sandwich board on the site, and on the Badlands Community Garden Society website for work bee times. This is on top of a number of other projects the society has in the works. The Newcastle Community Garden is fully rented out by users and recently members held a work bee to beautify the site. “Now that we have boxes built and functional, and grew stuff last year, we are looking at making it prettier,” said Marion. “We now have water barrels and have some bench-

To the businesses in the downtown core: On Friday, July 1, as soon as the last float rounded the corner at the Napier theater, the Yelping Coyotes started a two hour set designed to attract the parade watchers into the centre of town along Centre Street. We noticed many people

es we are looking at bringing in.” Some of these items they purchased through the World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Grant, which they were awarded last year. They are also planning to build a pergola for shade. The society has also received permission to construct a second community garden on a lot facing Town Hall. However, due to weather, they were not able to organize a work bee to get the site in shape. Another major project they have been diligently working on is the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. “It is almost all planted and things are coming up, it looks

great,” said Marion. This spring the society received permission to revive a complex of greenhouses west of the Town of Drumheller to start the farm. The CSA model is tried and true, where residents can purchase shares in the farm, and in turn reap the reward of harvest each month. Marion said they have sold a few shares, including five work shares, where the person can make their contribution through sweat equity. “These are people who come and help as well. Instead of buying shares with money, they buy it through the work they put in, so they have to work four hours a week for their share,” said Marion. “That way we have more help

too.” The society has also been working on hiring two students to work with them on their various projects. They received funding for the hire through the STEP program. “It makes a quite big difference, we get twice as much manpower so it is really helpful,” said Marion. The Badlands Community Garden Society is also planning a garden tour this season, and has a number of local gardens lined up for the event on July 23. This year it looks like they have a number of residents in East Coulee signed up to share their gardens. Nominations are open until July 11 and forms are available at www.badlandsgardens.ca.

who came by not just to listen to us play, but wanting to browse through the shops along the street. Only a few shops were opened, including Todor’s Fine photography, the Gus’ Corner Restaurant and Merle Norman. Because the place was basically dead, the public quickly dissipated and went to the water park where all the action was. Though I realize that competing with the action at the big dinosaur is a daunting task, it need not be impossible. This is a case of not competing but joining forces. If the entirety of Centre Street from the Riverside corner to the corner at the Brick had been turned into a carnival, with everyone participating, and the stores being open with sidewalk displays and more

entertainment, clowns, acrobats, bands, puppet shows, etc., all happening at once in a joyous cacophony, the public would have wandered up and down that venue, as it would have appeared to be part of the water park event. And remember that though an event committee is a good way of organizing such a festival, it can also be done by having the individual businesses sponsor a particular segment, such as a band or a street hockey tournament or an a capella signing group. It need not be expensive, it just needs to be fun and to attract attention. Last Friday, a number of people who wandered into the few open stores actually bought something (we did). If you have a captive audience,

exploit it shamelessly. There is always the comment that it is too expensive. Remember, the adage that to make money you need to spend money has always been true. The places that put out are the places that rake in.

Assessment begins for Special Areas water supply project submitted | inSide Drumheller

The Government of Alberta is beginning a voluntary threeyear Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process that will examine the potential diversion of water from the Red Deer River to the Special Areas region in East Central Alberta, as well as parts of the County of Stettler and the County of Paintearth. “We are voluntarily conducting an EIA to ensure an open and accountable process,” said Minister of Municipal Affairs, Hector Goudreau. “Gathering the relevant information will help ensure a good decision is made on whether to proceed with the proposed project.” The Special Areas region of East Central Alberta has experienced a long history of water shortages. Low precipitation and a lack of secure water supply have been impediments to economic diversification and stability in the region. The areas, under direction of Alberta Municipal Affairs, were established by the province in 1938 due to the extreme hardship of years of drought in the 1930s. The three-person Special Areas Board manages more than 1 million hectares of public land and provides municipal services, such as construction and maintenance of local roads and parks, and emergency and protective services, to the region. “Households and livestock in the drought-prone areas of East Central Alberta are in need of an improved water distribution system,” said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jack Hayden. “We need to carefully examine the Special Areas Water Supply Project to determine if it represents a viable way to bring a sustainable water supply to rural communities in the area.” Potential benefits of the project would include increased reliability of water supply for household and domestic use; stock watering; municipal and industrial use; waterfowl and wildlife conservation and enhancement; recreation, and a limited amount of irrigation. If constructed, the Special Areas Water Supply Project would be part of the provincially owned water management infrastructure and would be owned and operated by Alberta Environment. The projected cost for Phase 1 of the EIA is estimated at $1 million.

GuZoo opens after owner calls judicial review of government’s decision Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

The GuZoo is back in business. Being decommissioned in June after the province revoked its permanent license following an independent review citing several problems, the controversial zoo opened its gates Tuesday. In April the GuZoo was given a 60 day decommission order to shut down, but owner Lynn Gustafson requested a judicial

review of the province’s order. On Tuesday, both the Alberta government and Gustafson agreed the decommissioning process could be stayed until the review is complete. The GuZoo, a popular attraction north of Three Hills, is operational only under strict conditions, including government access to the facility at all times. Hearing proceedings for the judicial review are scheduled for September 28, and until that time the GuZoo has the

right to be open. Since Tuesday, Gustafson says visitors have been trickling in with positive response. “We’re back, same as we were before,” says the zoo’s owner Lynn Gustafson on Wednesday. “It feels pretty good, it’s still kind of maddening or whatever you want to call it, the way the whole thing's been carried out.” Gustafson estimates he’s out about $20,000 since being closed in June, attributed to legal fees and lost revenues.

He says many volunteers have come out to show support by donating food and time. Gustafson says to this day he has nothing in writing from the government as to why the zoo was decommissioned. He called for the judicial review to examine their decision to decommission the zoo in June. “If they had something, you’d think they would’ve given it to me.”

Wasn’t that a different Canada Day parade? All those beautiful antique cars, and all that space in between things. There was the usual crowd on my corner, having waited since before 10:00 for the big event. About an hour later, when everything apparently has passed, a lot of people started folding up their chairs and leaving, under the impression that the parade was over. Not me. I had a truck in the parade that I had not yet seen, and so I knew it could not be over. Sure enough, about 20 minutes after people started to leave, up the hill came the remainder of the parade. It was not a bad parade, merely disjointed as hell. Maybe there ought to be a Parade Marshal(s), just to keep things organized.

All applicants are thanked for their interest, however only those contacted will be interviewed.

ficer of Health for AHS. “West Nile virus can be a very serious illness that can have debilitating effects, particularly on older adults.” Symptoms of the most common form of West Nile virus (non-neurological syndrome) include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, a possible skin rash or swollen glands and headache. These symptoms usually occur within two to 14 days of infection; however, many people who become infected show no symptoms. A small number of infected people get the less common and more serious West Nile neurologic syndrome, which can cause tremors, vomiting, nausea, drowsiness, confusion, swallowing problems, high fever, decreased level of consciousness and/or paralysis.

“Drumheller mulls supplying water to Three Hills, Trochu.” What a great idea. Supply water to Three Hills and Trochu, but can’t or won’t get it out to East Coulee or the Golf Course. I doubt either town pays any tax to Drumheller, but I’ve heard and maybe this is just rumor that both East Coulee and Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club pay their fair share of tax to the Town of Drumheller. Funny thing too, they’re both within Town limits. Oh well, maybe with all the revenue generated from water sales, the Town can perhaps afford to look after its own citizens. After all, as the Mayor said “... the more water we sell, the cheaper we could provide it to the people of Drumheller.” Here’s a hot one. The fundraising chairman for the Badlands Community Facility won’t reveal how much has been raised, because the intent is to create a positive movement, everyone has a silent phase. Forgive me, but silence on something this big, in a town this small creates nothing but suspicion, and raises red flags. To further say that the fundraisers are now looking for bigger donations, and that the campaign needs a “significant opportunity to present itself ”, in order to be on track with its fundraising goals, does nothing to engender confidence, or a positive vibe, exactly the opposite in fact. $100,000.00 budgeted to move Town Hall. $28,600.00 awarded to a firm to do a design analysis. The originally stated rationale for moving seems to have been forgotten. Wheelchair accessibility was the big issue; handicapped accessibility was cited as the main reason the present building was unsuitable. Nobody seems to care too much about that anymore. The issue now is how much space is “eaten up by hallways and bathrooms.” They’re kidding, right?

Dr. Digby Horne, Medical Officer of Health for the Central Zone of AHS, says wearing mosquito repellent with DEET, as well as long sleeves, pants and socks when outside are still the most effective prevention measures when dealing with West Nile virus. “Albertans and travellers need to use these protective measures when gardening, golfing, fishing or relaxing outdoors,” said Dr. Horne. The spread of the virus to humans is dependent on the activity of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, which are typically most active during July and August, although their spread is dependent on the weather. The last few West Nile virus seasons have not been consistently warm enough to facilitate the spread of infected mosquitoes. Last year, there were five confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Canada; one in Alberta, a non-neurological case. For more information on West Nile virus, visit www. fightthebite.info.

Hunter family float honours their mining past Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Trailing the Atlas Coal Mine and The Mail’s floats in the Canada Day parade was a family inspired to celebrate the coal dust in their blood. Three generations of the Hunter family showed up in Drumheller on July 1 from all over Alberta after learning about George Hunter months before. “We recognized in the celebrations something that was a big part of our family story,” says Carol Hunter, daughter to George who worked at the Midland Mine and Atlas Coal Mine

Town Corporate Services director resigns Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller is on the search for a new director of Corporate Services after Michael Roy resigned last week. Mayor Terry Yemen confirmed that Roy, who has been with the Town of Drumheller since 2007, has decided to leave. He will remain with the Town of Drumheller until the end of July. “It’s tough to lose someone like him because that world is so tight knit that it is really hard to find a replacement,” said Yemen, adding that about five other municipalities are looking to fill the same position. Roy came in after Michael Minchin resigned in March of 2007, in time to act as returning officer for the municipal election. Yemen says the town has hired Bill Wulff, long time Town of Drumheller accountant who retired last year, on an interim basis and has contacted a head hunting agency to find a replacement. “He (Wulff ) made a verbal commitment that he would stay until we find a replacement, and one month afterwards to bring the person up to speed,” said Yemen. “It is a real asset because we will be able to make the transition with Mike leaving, and then when we find the next person, he will do a month of on the job training to bring him up to speed.” He admits that it may be difficult to find a replacement because of the stiff competition from other municipalities. “We might have to bring someone in with a little less experience, and help that person in the position,” said Yemen. “Ideally if a person came with everything you want, then we are going to lean towards that person, but because of the competitive market, we might have to shift our plan.”

in Drumheller. On April 30 and May 1, the four generations of Hunters came to Drumheller to learn more about where George worked and walked. Carol Hunter says much appreciation and insight was gleaned about her grandpa and grandma’s story and the “coal town roots that we cherish”. They returned July 1 to lend their support to the Mining Centennial celebrations. There were three generations present on their float, who think they represent the pride of a lot of mining families in Drumheller. “We really think the line from the song The Men of the Deeps says a lot about what has happened as a result of linking up with mining family celebrations.” There are 105 descendants from the original Hunter family of Winnie and George. Carol’s paternal grandfather and his brothers came from Scotland in 1912 as mining engineers. Her grandfather worked as a mine inspector in various mines across Alberta, including the ABC Colliries in Drumheller. Her mother's father, William E. Clark came from Nova Scotia

Canadian Badlands Passion Play introduces three-dimensional sound submitted The Weekender

On the eve of its 100th performance, the 2011 version of the Canadian Badlands Passion Play is celebrating a number of firsts. 1. The play has a new script based on the Gospel of John. 2. More than 200 actors and singers will appear on stage at one time. 3. The Jerusalem Wall has been expanded and upgraded to facilitate much needed wardrobe, rehearsal and dressing room space. 4. A living garden has been planted in the natural amphitheatre stage. 5. A seventh show has been added to the traditional six performances and a documentary is being filmed to chronicle the amazing transformation of the play. However, according to General Manager Vance Neudorf, the most compelling new addition this season is a state-of– the-art sound reinforcement system. “This year each audience member will clearly hear the actors, music and singing through speakers strategically hidden on the stage. The sound reinforcement will make the audio clearer and richer without taking anything away

from the acting and telling the life of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our society, it is fitting that we have ‘re-invented’ ourselves and elevated our presentation to a new and unprecedented level.” “No matter where the action takes place on the 30-acre Pas-

sion Play stage, our innovative sound system will deliver exceptional audio to everyone in the audience, just as if they were seated right in front of the action,” explains Dave Harrison, a sound engineer with EK Sound (Calgary), the company that helped design and install the new sound system. Harri-

son added that approximately 20 actors and singers will be using wireless microphones. “It’s been a challenge to make it all work seamlessly, but I know audiences are going to be very impressed with the end result.” Composer Luke Ertman, the man charged with making

the music and singing blend with the on-stage action and dialogue, concurs. “Like the script, all the music for this season is fresh and fully connected to the action taking place on stage. This year’s Passion Play music has strong influences from Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The new sound system will allow the richness of the music to permeate the story in an intimate and almost film-like manner. Audiences are in for a musical treat.” Word of the new enhancements to this year’s Passion Play is spreading quickly. “As of mid-June, we were ahead of last year’s sales. To date we have sold 7,000 tickets for our seven shows. We are projecting that we will surpass last year’s record attendance of 12,000,” says Neudorf. The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Dale Wilson’s head in the Sky -- liner Dale Wilson had the responsibility of escorting Rotary Club Citizen of the Year, his wife Bev Wilson, and the Most Courteous Employee, Kathy Dudley, at this year’s Canada Day parade. He did it in style with his 1957 Fairlane 500 Skyliner. This featured a fully retractable hard top with, according to Wikipedia, used three roof drive motors driving four lift jacks, four door lock motors, ten solenoids, four locking mechanisms for the roof, and a total of 610 ft (185.9 m) of wiring to remove the lid. Not the most practical set up, but that's what makes it a much sought after collectible today.

West Nile virus remains a health concern for all Albertans. Those over the age of 50 are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill when infected with West Nile virus. Your best protection is insect repellent with DEET. Used as directed, DEET has an excellent safety record. Products with lemon eucalyptus oil are effective for shorter periods of time. Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. 11071MA1

“I ended up being sick for three weeks, and the most frightening part was not knowing if it would keep getting worse.” – Coreen, Bow Island, AB West Nile virus survivor

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, develop a strategy to save money because you're going to need it. Now may be the time to think about clipping coupons or researching discounts.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 A smooth, professional manner helps you attain good results at work this week, Libra. Others are impressed at how you can handle yourself under pressure.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, if at first you don't succeed, you may want to attempt a different approach. Don't beat yourself up over things you can't change.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Clear some space so that you can work more easily, Scorpio. Clutter can make even the most simple task seem ever more complicated. A productive week lies ahead.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Smile, Gemini, because happy news is coming your way this week. Think about sharing the good fortune with someone you love, either a spouse or a good friend.

Family: Ranunculaceae Genis: Clematis Species: Orientalis

Golden Clematis – Tanquitica For anyone that has this plant growing in their yard, PLEASE take it out and depose of it. Unfortunately it’s one of those varieties that came out and would grow anywhere, and because of that you now see it growing freely in the countryside. If you walk or drive through the industrial side of Drumheller you can see it growing on the hill sides, over fences, in hedges, etc. It’s growing over top of existing plants, self-seeds and will eventually kill native plants. Like anyone else, I had one of these and loved it because it grew so well in our climate. Here are some alternatives to this yellow flowering clematis, although the colour yellow is not replaced easily with another climber.  Lonicent x brownie ‘Mandarin’ – Mandarin Honeysuckle – Yellow/red bloom  Lonicent x brownie ‘Dropmore Scarlet’ – Dropmore Honeysuckle – Red bloom These two come back on old wood and just continue to flower and grow, so it’s best to have something planted in front of them as the bottoms get a bit bare over time. Hummingbirds love these so if you can plant them where you see them from a window you may get lucky and see some of the tiny flyers. Other options are: • Clematis x ‘Jackmanii’ – Jackman Clematis – Purple bloom

• Parthenocissus quinquefolia ‘Englemanii’ – Engleman Ivy – nice fall color • Parthenicussus quinquefolia - Virginia Creeper – fall color • Humulus lupulus – Common Hops – no bloom There are others of course, but these ones I have grown and had good success with them. Hope this helps and takes away the disappointment of having to take out a favourite and replace it.

Thanks and happy gardening, Jackie

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, what many people admire about you is your ability to be such a good friend. This week you will display your capacity for humility and compassion to a greater level. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, partnerships are accentuated this week and you will find that you can do just about anything you set your mind to. Share your ideas with others. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you could be very popular with superiors at work this week. Use this to your advantage to ask for a raise or to get on a lucrative project. Your dealings with money will be positive.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you will find yourself being a sought-after asset among friends this week. Use these social situations to further your position in work-related matters. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, many tasks lie ahead this week, and it will be the utmost importance to stay focused. You have become serious about changing personal health. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 A clear-minded insight to plans you put in place comes to you this week, Aquarius. It will be the inspiration you need to get moving, considering you've been stationary for too long. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Express yourself with great confidence this week, Pisces. You feel in control and organized, which are two good things.
