HOT ROD TOUR

Pontiac power

Monday, July 12 1-2 pm

Bill Schaffer has a soft spot for Pontiac Beaumonts. The first sporty ride he owned as a high school student was a 1966. His current ride, this 1968 Sport Deluxe 396, might be as close to one built brand new as possible. This is an original numbers-matching Beaumont. He shows the original production sheet that came with the car, specifying what the car had coming off the assembly line, including the butternut paint, the gold bucket seats, body striping and tachometer. The hefty V8 396 that came under the hood came from the factory pumping out 325 horsepower. What makes the Beaumont rare compared to many other collectables is they were all produced in Oshawa, Ontario, making it interesting that he bought it in the United States. 20 pickpockets steal spotlight on Rosebud stage submitted The Weekender

Alberta is famous for its western traditions and the cowboy way – especially in rural communities. Therefore, when someone speaks about a wrangler in Rosebud, it naturally conjures up images of a tough cowboy, skilled in the art of rounding up cattle with horse and lasso. While she doesn’t require either, Belinda Jackson is becoming very skilled at managing 20 pickpockets ranging in age from eight to fifteen. Every performance of Oliver! requires eight workhouse boys. It’s up to Jackson to coordinate their schedules and travel times from Calgary, Olds, Standard and Strathmore with the performance dates and times of Oliver! For Jackson, the task has been a challenge that she readily accepted. “I wasn’t really certain what I was getting into, but I was confident I could handle it,” she says. “Overall, the kids have been wonderful to work with. They certainly are an exuberant bunch, with a fair amount of excess energy. I like

the fact that they are quick to learn about blocking and music, and they listen well to instruction backstage. I’m looking forward to the challenges of ‘wrangling’ them for the duration of Oliver!.” Artistic director Morris Ertman has been impressed with Jackson’s handling of the youngsters as well as their onstage performances. “The kids in this show have been absolutely fantastic - focused, committed and of course utterly charming. There’s an energy that children bring to a production that ignites both the rest of the cast and the audience to create a truly unique experience. There is a brassy innocence about them that serves the story so well. And they really do love the stage, which is the most infectious part of it all. Their joy and mischief is a palpable treat in this production. Kids – you gotta love ‘em!” Making up more than half of the total cast in Oliver!, the kids come from a variety of communities that surround Rosebud including Calgary to the south, Olds to the north and Hanna to the east.

The commitment on the part of the kids and their parents is enormous and welcome. “It’s a testament to the hard work of the 20 kids that no matter which group of eight is performing there is a consistency in their portrayal of work house boys as part of Fagan’s roving gang of pickpocket thieves,” explains Jack-

son. Oliver!, follows the trials and tribulations of a young orphan boy in Victorian London as he makes his way from a starving workhouse boy to lovable pickpocket and eventually to adored son. Oliver! runs until August 29, 2010 at the Rosebud Theatre Opera House. There are both matinee and evening shows.

Red Knights visit Drumheller On Friday, June 25, the World’s Largest Dinosaur received a visit from the Red Knights, pictured above, as they were starting their rally with a tour of the area before moving on to Kananaskis for a poker run. Starting from the ski hill, they rode their motorbikes to the Drumheller Fire Station and joined the fire fighters for a barbecue, before visiting The Royal Tyrrell Museum, stopping at the World’s Largest Dinosaur on the way. Red Knights is a motorcycle club for firefighters and designed to promote a positive image of motorcycling and safety while enjoying the camaraderie of other firefighters. The rallies are also a way to fundraise and the proceeds from this particular poker run were donated to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Weekender photo by Pascale Taylor

Representatives of Encana were able to see ďŹ rsthand the impact the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s Science Camps are making on the young participants last Wednesday. Encana has been a sponsor of the Encana Badlands Science Camps for the last four years. The camp oers young people, ages 9-15, a unique experience of learning about the natural history of the area, and of course dinosaurs. On July 7, a group from Encana toured the camp and participated in activities including fossil hunting. Councillors and campers directed the guests in what to look for when prospecting for fossils. The guests also toured the Tyrrell’s 25th anniversary exhibition. “We are appreciative of the sponsorship, and we want to show our gratitude,â€? said Jason Martin director of operations and ďŹ nance for the Royal Tyrrell Museum, who invited Encana out for a day of fun and learning in the Badlands. “The camp touches people from all over.â€? Canadian Badlands Passion Play opens tonight Patrick Kolafa The Weekender

The Passion Play Site is a flurry of activity as masons place the final stones, costume makers stitch the final pieces of wardrobe, and actors, directors and musicians perfect their parts for this year’s Passion Play. The Canadian Badlands Passion Play has enjoyed nearly two decades of renowned success in the valley and has told the passion and resurrection of Christ to thousands of spectators in the natural amphitheatre nestled in the hills. Despite this, every year those who stage the play are continually tweaking it to make it more relevant and accessible. “This year is going to be the best ever,” Randal Wiebe, artistic director told The Weekender, “and this is not just me, everyone is saying it.” In its April 14 edition, The Drumheller Mail reported on some of the physical changes to the site which included a more accessible seating area for those with mobility issues, the addition of 150 seats and set improvements. What Wiebe is excited about is the play. He says actors and directors have made the performance more accessible adding more depth to the characters, making it easier to identify with. “It is more than a re-enactment, the actors bring more understanding to the story,” he said. Returning are Tim Hildebrand as Matthew, Stephen Waldschmidt as Jesus, and Lennette Randall who portrays a powerful Mary Magdalene. Davis Snider, who played Jesus in 2007 is back in the fold at the Passion Play to portray Sadduk, a Pharisee in Jerusalem as well as act as an understudy for both Jesus and Matthew, There have also been changes to the music and the addition of a conductor, so the musical director Bill Hamm can monitor the performance more effectively. Wiebe explains one change that surprised him as to the powerful affect it has had on the look of the performance is in the costumes. He said designers have made a concerted effort to recreate the costumes so they reflect the regional

clothing and time period of the characters in the play. He says it has made an impact visually on the performance. The Passion Play opens tonight, Friday, July 9 at 6 p.m. and plays Saturday, July 10 at 6p.m., and Sunday, July 11 at 3 p.m. It continues Friday, July 16 at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 17 at 3 p.m., and Sunday, July 18 at 3 p.m. For more information go to www.canadianpassionplay.com.

Live to ride RCMP focus on motorcycle safety submitted | inSide Drumheller

Alberta Integrated Traffic Units (Sheriffs and RCMP), in support of Road Safety Vision 2010 and with our enforcement partners, will be involved in a joint effort to reduce the harm that results from motorcycle collisions. The summer months and warm weather mean an increase in the number of motorcycles on the roads. The Alberta Integrated Traffic Units want to stress the importance of sharing the road and using smart traffic safety habits to maximize the safety of Albertans. Although speed and alcohol are often the root causes behind motorcycle collisions, inexperience is also a factor. It is imperative that new riders develop

their skills in safe motorcycle operation. This includes participating in driver training courses, using bikes suitable to their skill level and wearing approved safety equipment. A motorcyclist’s relationship with the road has more to do with the journey than the destination. Freedom is part of the motorcycle experience but along with that freedom comes a higher risk. Motorcyclists don’t have the same distractions as drivers in a car (cup holders, cell phones, CD players, computer plug-ins, etc.) but they still need to be aware that the drivers around them might have their minds focused on other things. The Alberta Integrated Traffic Units are asking drivers to be aware of motorcyclists out on the road and to be aware of the

space motorcyclists need to maintain their safety on the road. “Look twice for motorcyclists when approaching intersections or changing lanes and never underestimate the speed of a bike,” says Inspector James Stiles, Officer in Charge of “K” Division Traffic Services. “Failure to yield the right of way is a leading cause of motorcycle/vehicle collisions.”

The Integrated Traffic Units also wants to remind motorcyclists that when they head out on the road, they represent thousands of people who love to ride. Motorcyclists are encouraged to ride defensively and make every effort to enhance their visibility. Be alert at intersections and make eye contact with drivers before proceeding. Stay aware of what’s going on behind you, be-

cause a rear-end crash can be deadly. Position yourself to be seen and stay out of drivers’ blind spots. Realize that your speed is often misjudged by drivers. Every year, police respond to many collisions in Alberta in which there is unnecessary injury and tragic loss of life. By increasing our public education efforts, the Integrated Traffic Units aim to make Alberta’s roadways safer for everyone.

Just like the rest of you, I received my AWCS cart last week. I thought “What a delightfully attractive addition to my front yard”, a big, greenish black (blackish green?) wheeled garbage cart. If I sawed it in half, each side could serve as a nice planter. I’m speaking of course of the huge garbage carts that are a part of the new Automated Waste Collection System (AWCS) the town has implemented. I guess the system is to back up the slogan, “Keeping the Drumheller Valley beautiful.” (Here’s a hint, you might want to start by knocking down what’s left of the old high school,on the corner of 5th Street and Railway Avenue. Only every tourist who comes to town via Highway 9 sees it, and first impressions are lasting impressions.) I can’t speak for everyone, but I didn’t have any complaints with the old Manual Waste Collection System, a garbage truck, a driver and a guy who throws the garbage into the truck. It worked for me. If I did my garbage bags up properly, stacked or tied whatever other waste I wanted taken away, then every Wednesday morning it would be taken away. For me, it was more than my money’s worth. These big wheeled carts are going to take further investigation before I make any judgments. Last weekend I attended the Annual General Meeting of the Wildrose Alliance Party. A friend and I drove up to Red Deer to the Capri Convention Center on Friday evening, so that we might hear the opening speech of the leader, Danielle Smith. I have never been to an AGM before, of any party, but as VP of the Drumheller-Stettler constituency association I thought I’d better go. I’m glad that I did. The Wildrose has blossomed into a party with about 15,000 members, of which between 750-800 filled the Convention Center floor to hear Danielle Smith. The surprise of the evening came when the president of the party announced that our constituency had the most members in attendance (23). There were members from all 83 constituencies, and the media got an eyeful. During the leader’s speech they also got an earful, as Danielle got a standing ovation after nearly every sentence. This was a crowd looking to put Alberta back on a track from which they feel it has strayed. These are people with a true conservative bout looking for a party that shares their values. The media was there, but I am pretty sure some in their group came away disappointed, because this was not, as has been derisively referred to, the Wildeyed Alliance. This was a meeting of a party of the people, a party which if the meeting and its organization are an indication, is a government in waiting. After reading certain columns in different papers, it appears that those in the media are not easily satisfied. It seems as though you are damned if you do, and equally damned if you don’t. The Wildrose works according to democratic principles, with the members actually developing and proposing policy, and any amendments thereto. The media would portray the party as right wing, gun toting, free enterprise, capitalist wackos. When it turns out not to be, they are disappointed, and accuse it of softening its stance, moving away from the right and of having that old chestnut, a hidden agenda. You just can’t please people. 27m

Golf tournament hosted for local boy’s drive for kidney disorder solution Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller Sinking a birdie on a par three is a feat most adults would love to pull off on the golf course. But to hear of young Daylen Ostapowich, 7, sinking it is a story in itself, let alone the fact the young boy has been fighting kidney disease for all of his known life. Daylen suffers from Nephrotic Syndrome, a disease that inhibits his kidneys from filtering out toxins that spill into his blood. Mixed with the immune suppressant medication he’s prescribed, this can even make a bug bite or common cold a week-long ordeal. “Daylen knows this is his life,

he knows he’s different, but for him this is the norm. He just trudges on, through hospital visits and daily medication,” says his mother Theresa. “I get my strength from him… he’s my inspiration.” The cause of his health problems isn’t nearly as profound as what the young “trooper” is doing about it. Daylen can sure golf, and for the first time he and his family, spearheaded by his mother, will be hosting a fundraiser with the Drumheller Golf and Country Club to raise money for the Daylen Ostapowich Kidney Research Fund with his favourite pastime - golf. Their goal is to get a chair at

A golf tournament will be held Friday, July 30 in support of Daylen Ostapowich’s family’s goal to help set up a chair for Nephrotic Syndrome at the University of Calgary. The seven-year-old Drumheller boy, who suffers from the disorder, will be swinging to add money to the Daylen Ostapowich Kidney Research Fund at the Drumheller Golf and Country Club.

the University of Calgary in Nephrology, and in order to do that the Southern Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Kidney Foundation is planning on raising $1.5 million, which will be matched by the Alberta government, in order to set up a field of research into the syndrome at the university. Drumheller’s golf course will be hosting the tournament on July 30 where all proceeds will be directed to getting a chair in place to study the disorder affecting Daylen. “We are wanting to raise funds as much as possible to get the chair going, and hopefully get some more money into this kind of research to find a cure or other possible medications to help people with kidney disease,” says Theresa. Their goal for the tournament is $10,000 to be put into the fund. To participate in the tournament, tickets can be bought at the Drumheller Golf and Country Club, or by contacting Theresa at 403-823-9833.
