OPINION

Johnny’s library opens In November of 2010, an explosion at a resort in Mexico shattered the life of a Drumheller family. The Charmont Family lost is patriarch Chris and youngest child John. While the pain will likely never fade, they have found a way to remember their legacy and help those most in need of help. Last month a library was officially opened in Roatan in Johnny’s name. Johnny’s heart was inextricably linked to the Morgan Jayne Project, which supports families in Roatan dealing with HIV and AIDS. Their effort, and the effort of the Drumheller community are making a difference. Terra Charmont graciously shared how the library came to be and here is the conclusion to last week's story. submitted | inSide Drumheller

“What’s the problem in creating a beautiful children’s library in a place where children have rarely seen a book? It’s keeping the kids OUT of it! They sneak in there before school, at recess and just on their way to the bathroom. The grade ones sneak books into their backpacks as they don't quite get the difference between borrowing and having, they LOVE it! “ Valerie Nelson – Roatan, Honduras. Chloe Rowett “His laugh because it’s funny.”

Barrett Greene “He helps me out with my homework.”

Continued from last week...

On the island there was a buzz of excitement as the kids and staff realized this was going to happen. They worked hard to make a special spot for Johnny’s Library, complete with a Kinder Corner, reading center and teacher resource area. Beautiful, bright murals were painted by a local named Anthony who works with the project. The main mural shows Canada and Roatan with a bridge between, showing the bridge between our worlds is the ability to read. Bright parrots and monkeys line the walls. Shelving and furniture was trickier. It’s illegal to chop down a tree, even in your

own yard, and wood is expensive. Shelves were made from cement molds from a nearby building. “Every board had to be sanded by hand to remove remaining cement and varnished with several coats to prevent termites", Val explains. “The table and chairs are made from giant trees in Guatemala, made and brought here by a woman from Quebec. It takes a village to build a library! “An air conditioner was required to keep the books from deteriorating in the humid climate. “It was a huge eye opener for me", says Terra. “All the little things you don’t even think of… but everything came together with so many people working at it.” Now the school has a library to be proud of and the kids are thrilled. We sent only the best quality. These kids have a chance to learn and grow in a whole new way. The reading materials are bright, fun and modern. And the learning resources? “Wish I had a lot of this stuff when I was teaching, this is incredible. Resources that Canadian teachers would be jealous of!" says John’s grandma Heather, who worked as a special needs educational assistant and has dedicated her own garage as a workshop for the library." The library Grand Opening was on May 11 at Luisa Trundle School. The ribbon cutting was done by Fred Makowecki, founder of the Morgan Jayne Project, on his daughter Morgan’s birthday. The kids wrote and acted out a play of how Johnny’s Library came about, made presentations, sang and the local band played. They served John’s favorite lunch, pizza. Another donor group, Amigos of Honduras, gave all the kids school supplies and a book to take home, for most of them it is the first one they’ll own. “ It was an amazing day. The library is beautiful and the children are so grateful", Fred wrote in a note home. Last week children in the school were asked, “What are the three most beautiful places in Roatan?” Ishmael's hand shot up.. “Tabiana Beach, Parrot Tree Plantation and Johnny’s Library!” Thank you to everyone who helped make this dream a reality. If you would like to help with this ongoing project please call Terra at 403-823-8676.

Fred Makowecki was on hand for the official opening of Johnny’s Library. Here a student named Yanika presents a gift for Makowecki and Terra Charmont.

Johnny’s Library in Roatan officially opened last month in Memory of John Charmont.

Storm hammers valley

(above) It might have been easier for residents to travel around Drumheller in a canoe on Wednesday afternoon. An intense thunderstorm dropped 53.1 millimetres of rain according to Environment Canada. Storm sewers were unable to cope with the waters, causing large pools to form in many areas of town. Town crews were hard at work clearing sewers and draining water during the storm. (right) Brent Scarlett makes sure the storm drain at the intersection of 3rd ave and Riverside Drive is clear as a huge

puddle comes up to his knees. Drumheller was pounded by a thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon. Heavy rains were too much for the town’s storm sewers, causing pools to form all over town. inSide photo by Michael James

Bishop Frederick Henry, sta and former sta joined the entire school body of St. Anthony’s School, dignitaries and families to celebrate the opening of the new school Wednesday morning. Bishop Henry led the celebrants in mass before blessing each room in the school. Some of the special guests at the grand opening included board members from Christ the Redeemer School Division, representatives from Alberta Infrastructure

and Alberta Education, the school’s main contractor Cana and Gibbs Gage Architecture. Mayor Terry Yemen and Drumheller-Stettler MLA Richard Strankman also attended and brought greetings. “It is very overwhelming to stand in front of you, coming from my background of a sparse rural area and seeing the enthusiasm today is heartfelt, said Strankman. “St. Anthony’s School has been a part of Drumheller for 53 years and St. Anthony’s School has been making

Our province’s potential and how we, as Albertans invest in our people, our greatest resource,â€? said Casey. “The building of this school ensures our students are educated in safe and well maintained facilities. Vibrant and modern schools help teachers inspire students to reach their full potential, inspiring facilities provide equaling inspiring learning opportunities.â€? He also expressed the importance of having the freedom to learn. “I have to say this reminds me to say what an absolute blessing it is to live in this country and this province where we value education from one end of the country to the other. And we also value the opportunity for faith based education in our classes and how important it is for our young people.â€? He added that the government is committed to improving school infrastructure. “We already have 80 projects underway valued at a billion dollars, but we know we need more. This is why Premier Redford committed that we would build an additional 50 new schools and modernize 70 existing schools across the province over the next four years,â€? said Casey. High stream advisory ended for Red Deer River Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Red Deer River has been a source of concern for over a week. Residents were witness to a dramatic rise in the depth of the river last Thursday, conjuring memories of the flood of 2005. Residents can now rest easy. As of Wednesday, June 13, at 9:30 a.m. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development ended the high stream advisory for the Red Deer River downstream of the Dickson Dam. The water levels The Red Deer River downstream of the Dickson Dam has been given the all clear from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. The river had been under a high stream advisory since Thursday, June 7, after intense rains in the Rocky Mountains caused rivers in Alberta to rise dramatically. inSide photo by Michael James

As the school year is coming to an end, it will soon be time for students to begin thinking of employment for the summer.

Talking to Marina Paarup, the director of MH Enterprises, and Jennifer McHugh, Working Supervisor and Career and Employment Consultant at Alberta Works, here are a some suggestions for landing summer job:

Drumheller based wireline company seeking a

full time wireline trainee Must have all oilfield tickets, air brakes endorsement and/or class 3 license. Competitive salary and benefits available after 3 months.

Sometimes finding a summer job, or employment for the first time can be intimidating if you’ve had no previous paid employment. However, that doesn’t mean students don’t have valuable skills that can be transferred over to the work force. Identifying your skills and building a resume is one of the first steps to finding work. inSide photo illustration by Donella Swan

ably. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development issued high stream advisories, flood watches, and flood warnings throughout the province. The Red Deer River downstream of the Dickson Dam had been under a high stream advisory since Thursday, June 7. Despite the end of the advisory, the river continues to run high and fast. had also been listed as falling. Upstream of the Dickson Dam was given the all clear the previous day. The Little Red Deer River, a tributary that joins the Red Deer River downstream of the Dickson Dam, had a flood warning at the beginning of the week, but has been downgraded to a high stream advisory, with falling water levels. “I think their first step is taking a look at building a resume,” said Paarup. She said even if students haven’t had any prior experience with the work force, it doesn’t mean they don’t have valuable skills. “It’s figuring out what skills you have and where you would like to go with them,” said Paarup. Jennifer McHugh said don’t discount jobs such as babysitting, or even mowing your neighbour’s lawn. She said it all counts as experience. Taking a look at your network of who you know is a good idea. “It’s sort of tapping into that hidden job market,” said Paarup. “It’s very important to be flexible and open as to what type of job you want, because the more eager and willing you are, the better chances you will have,” said McHugh. McHugh also suggested wearing a nice outfit while either dropping off a resume or going for an interview is always a good idea. She said following up after applying or going for an interview is smart too, because it will give employer’s a chance to put a face to the resume or interview. Both MH enterprises and Alberta Works have resources such as job boards that are available for students to take a look at, and anyone looking for help finding employmet is encouraged to visit. “Right now I’m seeing a huge demand for students, so they kind of have the pick of their choice,” said Paarup. Paarup said that looking and applying for summer work as early as possible is a good way to get your foot in the door. “Sometimes it’s that summer job that can lead them down a career path, and gaining paid employment experience is going to help them with the next phase of their lives,” said Paarup.

Teaching geology, learning how to spot fossils, preparing them, and learning the science of palaeontology are just a few things offered by the camp. “Everybody loves it. I’ve seen a lot of people coming with family and friends and spending their holidays here,” said Syvertsen. Campers and counsellors make their homes in teepees on a camp site just a short distance from the museum. Three meals a day plus snacks are served to

ensure campers are full of energy for a full itinerary of activities. There are three science camps available: junior science camp, ages 9-11; senior science camp, ages 12-15; family science camp, ages five and up. The junior and senior camps run for six days, and the family camp runs for three. For more information regarding science camp go to www.tyrrellmuseum.com.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Secrets of an avid garage saler Donella Swan | inSide Drumheller

October 24, 1956 - June 5, 2012 It is with great sadness that the family of Bev announces her passing following a courageous battle with cancer. An Angel whispered take my hand and come with me. Your work here is done. I went away to a place where there’s no tears, nor sorrow only laughter and smiles there will always be a Tomorrow. I am not alone all who went before are here. They awaited my return. I know you’ll grieve and wish I was still here. I am here in the memories you hold dear I did not wish for you to cry, nor feel sad My pain is gone and I am Free!

With summer just around the corner, garage sale season has started up in the valley and surrounding area. Darlene Shannon has been garage saling for over 25 years. Here are some of her tips and tricks to scoring at garage sales: “I highlight all the garage sale ads in the paper. I colour code them for each area, then I can map out my best route,â€? said Shannon. She also said she highlights sales starting on Friday, so she can get there on the opening day and have the best selection. Shannon also suggested that arriving early will increase your chances of ďŹ nding something interesting. “The worst thing I ever lost out on at a garage sale was an antique chair,â€? said Shannon. She said that while she "I highlight all the garage sale ads in the paper. I colour code them for each area, then I can map out my best route,â€? Darlene Shannon

was sitting in the chair, another customer had went and paid for the item. "If you really like something, you get it. Don’t be looking around,â€? said Shannon. She said she doesn’t ever bring her big purse. That way her hands are free to browse the sale items. Shannon said she bought a small cross-body purse at a garage sale, which she carries with her during her trips. “I also try to bring lots of change because they only have so much change at the sales,â€? said Shannon. She suggested wearing comfortable clothes, because you may be out there for a few hours. “Bringing your own bags is something to remember, you may need them,â€? said Shannon. Garage sales can be a nice way to spend a day, ďŹ nding knick-knacks and treasures. “I like to go for fun now and ďŹ nd things for family and friends,â€? said Shannon. Pick up The Drumheller Mail for weekly listings, of all area garage sales.

Thomas Mulcain. Why do these guys (Thomas Lukasuk) insist on “Thomasâ€?? Wasn’t there once a leader of the NDP who went by “Tommyâ€?? Anyway, Thomas Mulcair, present leader of the NDP, was once the environment minister in Quebec. Minister of the Environment. In Quebec, how could he possibly be better qualiďŹ ed to understand all that is bad and wrong with our oilsand development? Add to those the fact that he took a 20, 40, 60 minute helicopter ride over the site. And then, there’s the self delusion that he will someday be Prime Minister. Add it all up, and you will see that the man is eminently qualiďŹ ed to dump on another province’s resource development. James Cameron, the Hollywood guy who dumped on us, could go to Mulcair for advice on the subject, so much knowledge does he possess. There’s a problem with all Mr. Mulcair’s rantings, and it’s a problem the media have seemed to miss. It concerns the environment, and Quebec, therefore it concerns Mr. Mulcair. Unfortunately he seems to have missed it, or because it’s in Quebec, he’s chosen to ignore it. It didn’t catch the attention of James Cameron, nor have I heard a peep out of enviro-guru David Suzuki. Perhaps it’s because it produces “cleanâ€? energy - i.e. hydroelectric. I’m talking about James Bay Hydro project, which ooded close to 5000 square miles, displaced whole Indian communities and destroyed wildlife migration patterns. Its construction submerged 5000 square miles of boreal forest! This is the same boreal forest that environmental experts tell us is a great “carbon sinkâ€?, that is, it absorbs huge amounts of carbon dioxide. This is 5000 square miles of “carbon sinkâ€? that can never be recovered or reclaimed, as it is under hundreds of feet of water! But nobody says a word. Quebec Hydro is working on another massive project, where it is about to divert more rivers, displace more Cree Indians, ruin more wildlife habitat, and submerge another 1000 square miles of boreal forest under water. You can’t plant trees here, you can’t seed grass, you can’t reintroduce wildlife. It’s gone, it’s ooded, it can’t be reclaimed. Yet where is the hue and cry? Quebec is very good with the “build it, then paint it greenâ€? policy. Open pit mining, such as the oilsands, can be reclaimed. Soil and rock can be put back into place, trees and shrubs planted, seeded to various grasses. I’ve seen it done. Eventually Nature reclaims things, but man can help hurry the process. On the other hand, Nature can never reclaim land that’s been submerged under water. One has to ask, where was Tommy Mulcair when all these beautiful rivers were being diverted, all these people displaced, all the wildlife lost, and their habitat ruined, and so much of our great “carbon sinkâ€? sunk? Where were you Tommy?

HAPPENINGS Badlands given big role in The Seventh Son inSide Drumheller | inSideDrumheller.com

Riverside Value Drug Mart

Michael James | inSide Drumheller Lights...camera....action! The Drumheller area badlands are being thrust into the spotlight again for a major motion picture. Legendary Pictures is investigating the potential of Horseshoe Canyon being used in the opening shot of their new movie, The Seventh Son. Mayor Terry Yemen and economic development officer, Bob Cromwell, spent some time with a crew from the production, showing them around our unique terrain. “When they phoned me, the movie had already started filming. What they’re looking for is the opening shot of the movie,” said Cromwell. “That’s how the movie starts and it’s going to all be done in Horseshoe Canyon.” The shot will be done using 24 hour time lapse filming using an IMAX camera. The footage will then be used in the opening scene in a display of magic, showing how the world has aged over the centuries. The movie crew had scouted locations in British Columbia and Kananaskis and finished their trip by stopping in Drumheller. “They phoned me from Spring Bank and let us know they were on their way. Mayor Yemen and I jumped into a truck and met them at the airport,” said Cromwell. The crew consisted of the producers, directors, cinematographer, and more. Everyone hiked through the canyon when it was soaked from recent rains. “It was the who’s-who. We were at the lookout point and they asked how to get down, so the mayor said we’d have to hike,” said Cromwell. “It had been raining all day, so the bentonite and mud was clinging to us. It was unbelievable. They were covered with so much gunk by the end of it.” The movie is based on The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. The tale follows Tom Ward, a young teenager, as he is trained by the Spook to fight evil in a medieval setting.

“For All Your Family Needs”

The picturesque terrain of the badlands will be centre stage in the opening shot of the new Legendary Pictures movie, The Seventh Son, starring Ben Barnes and Jeff Bridges. Mayor Terry Yemen and Bob Cromwell, economic development officer for the Town, spent some time showing the movie crew around Horseshoe Canyon. The movie will be the first Hollywood film to come here since 2004. inSide photo by Michael James

The movie stars Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) as Tom and Jeff Bridges (True Grit, Tron Legacy, Iron Man) as the Spook. Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, and Kit Harington also star. At the moment, Cromwell is working on the logistics of being able to use the land for filming. Considering the area is a provincial park, there are some requirements. “If they get in and shoot, they know they are tasked with doing a full environmental reclamation,” said Cromwell. The movie is yet another in a long list of films that have taken

advantage of our unique terrain. The most famous being Unforgiven and Superman. The last Hollywood movies to be filmed here were in 2004, though smaller productions, such as Remember by Airdrie based MovieMakers, have filmed here. “There are quite a few movies where you can pick out shots filmed in Drumheller here and there, but to have an opening scene has quite an impact,” said Cromwell. “I was asking them what the spin off to the community could be. Once they know they have a place that is willing to work with them, it really helps.”
