Students at Drumheller Valley Secondary School are asking their peers to live with no regrets in a campaign to educate about making informed decisions when it comes to sex. The day was in years past called California Day. Students and staﬀ would spend the day enjoying the summer weather, end of classes, and having some fun. This year, the school and Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club has evolved the day to promote healthy lifestyles and attitudes. “This year we decided to have a diﬀerent emphasis,” said teacher Lynn Hemming. “We wanted a fun day, like California Day was, but with an educational emphasis to promote the campaign.” The school was the recipient of a $24,000 grant from Alberta Health and Wellness to promote healthy attitudes towards sex. The school then asked students or ideas how to use the money. “We surveyed the students and went to the FOR Club and asked for their input and ideas. What were issues and concerns, and what did they want to see the money used for,” said Hemming. “We’re pleased with the fact that it’s been student lead. They’re excited and been very involved creating this campaign.” The FOR Club set to work coming up with the campaign and how best to promote it. “We went to work thinking of a slogan that people would remember,” said FOR club member Courtney Hatt. “When it comes to sexual choices, we think kids should make choices they won’t regret later. We want to get all the students together and say ‘have no regrets in your life.’” During the day, students will learn from presentations, such

The FOR Club also designed tee shirts and water bottles for their peers. Some students will also be helping out with DinoFest by cleaning up downtown Drumheller. “We’ve traditionally done a cleanup as part of this day, and we decided to carry that on and do something for the community,” said Hemming. After the fun is said and done, there is one message to remember. “We want students make choices they won’t regret,” said Hemming. “We want them to make choices to be proud of.”

The Centennial of Coal Mining Committee is one step closer to realizing its goal of erecting at Miner’s Memorial. Last year the Valley celebrated 100 years of the commercial coal mining industry in the Valley. Part of its long-term goal was to erect a permanent memorial to the men who died working the mines. This week Mayor Terry Yemen received word that the committee was successful in securing a grant from the Canadian Heritage Legacy Fund for $49,500. Mayor Terry Yemen said this is enough to complete the project. “We now have the capital in place to do the memorial,” said Yemen. “It is very significant…It was through our centennial celebration we felt this is one thing that we have been sadly remiss in not doing, There’s no memorial to the miners who died. This is a dedication to them. Each one of their names will be on the memorial.” Since the initial plans were made, volunteers have been working hard doing research to make sure no miner is missed. They have been combing newspapers and archives in Drumheller and beyond and have about 50 new names to be added to the memorial, over the names they were previously familiar with. They have selected the small park beside the Civic Centre on Centre Street for the memorial and they have commissioned a sculptor to design the memorial to be constructed from iron and black granite. “There will be some benches and reflection area there so people can bring their family and people can sit and reflect on their past, and there will be some history there about Drumheller’s history of coal mining,” said Yemen. The committee has also been actively fundraising and has come up with about $40,000 before receiving the grant, demonstrating wide support for the project.

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

Last week I made a visit over to the Continuing Care unit of the Hospital. A lot of people my age don’t like going into the place, because it portends the future. They go over to visit Mom or Dad (or the crazy uncle they used to keep locked in the attic), only to find Mom or Dad reduced by old age, to incorherence and incontinuence. (The crazy uncle never was too coherent). We don’t like it, because it saddens us to see Mom and Dad in that condition, but it also frightens us. We know that what we are looking at is out future, and we don’t like it. Invariably, our visits shorten. Not because we don’t love our parents, but because we no longer have anything in common with them. “How have you been feeling?”, “Saw so and so the other day, she said to say Hi.”, “The weather sure is nice, everything’s nice and green.” “So, can we bring you anything?” “Okay then, we have to be going now.” “Love you, bye, bye ...” And it’s off we go. I go over to the Continuing Care to visit a couple of old friends, and it is difficult, no doubt about it. The fellow I visit is 103 years old. I don’t visit him as often as I used to, simply because it is too hard to make conversation. It’s only recently that he knew who I was, but now he is not sure. He still has a wonderful laugh, and I do what I can to elicit it. My visits have become few and far between (much to my shame). The lady I have visited on the other hand, is much younger and can be sharp as a razor, and is a bit of a prankster. One morning while having breakfast at my favourite eatery (okay, Whifs), she and her husband walked by. Knowing neither of them, I merely nodded, “Good morning,” she replied in kind, and quickly snatched a piece of bacon off my plate. Since then, she, her husband and I have become good friends, in fact the reason for my visit to Continuing Care was to take her some bacon. Unfortunately, she was asleep. So, why my apprehension about going into Continuing Care? Simple, I’m afraid I’ll get lost, and in my disorientated state, some caregiver will sedate me, and quietly lead me to a room, never to be heard from again. Or maybe I’ll just wander the halls (they all look the same), asking residents, “How do I get out?” Another kindly caregiver will think me a resident and I will be consigned to endlessly wandering the halls looking for the way out. Ultimately, when our time comes, there is no way out. 22b

Drumheller RCMP are asking residents to help stop an emerging blight in the town. During the past few weeks, the Drumheller RCMP has noticed a rise in incidents of vandalism to property. Many of those properties are owned by the community. For example, last week someone had spread graffiti throughout the Little Church on North Dinosaur Trail (a few students have since repaired the damaged). “As of late, I have noticed a large number of what is referred to as tagging or graffiti,” said Staff Sergeant Art Hop-

kins. The vandal(s) have been using spray paint or markers to write slogans on signs, benches, and dinosaurs within town. Some of the slogans say “Grad 2012”, or variation thereof, others are tags used to declare ownership of property or the item. Some extreme examples include a van burning at DVSS and someone breaking into and vandalizing the old St. Anthony’s student over the past two weekends. “These actions give visitors the wrong impression of Drumheller and it’s insulting to those people who work hard to beautify our community,” said Staﬀ Sergeant Hop-

kins. “Imagine visiting here from another country and seeing all this graffiti. It does not give you a safe and secure feeling or instill the desire to stay longer.” Those linked to the vandalism can be charged with mischief. The RCMP is asking residents with any information or who have witnessed people with large felt markers or cans of spray paint at inappropriate times to call the Drumheller RCMP at 403-823-7590. “We have a lot of old architecture here,” said Staff Sergeant Hopkins. “These places if they get tagged, it never fully comes off. They are forever damaged.”

Man sentenced eight months on drug charges Trial date set for man charged with theft from Drumheller Institution

A man received an eightmonth sentence for drug charges after Drumheller RCMP discovered what appeared to be a commercial drug operation in a Bankview home. Kael Poirier, 36 appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, May 25. He pleaded guilty to three charges of possession for the purposes of traﬃcking. The charges date back to March 30 of this year. RCMP were called in the early morning hours to the Bankview area where a women was claiming that someone was trying to kill her and that she had killed a person inside a nearby home. She had a high degree of anxiety and initial reports said she was smashing windows of the house with a shovel. Police could hear screaming inside the residence. When they entered the home they noted in plain view drugs and drug paraphernalia. The man located inside was arrested, the scene was secured and RCMP ob-

tained a search warrant. Upon searching, police discovered about 414 grams of marijuana, packaged in different weights, purportedly for selling. They also discovered ﬁve grams of marijuana resin, six grams of seed and seven grams of psilocybin (mushrooms). They also located score sheets to keep track of sales and a cell phone. The phone rang, and the person on the other end was looking to acquire drugs. The court heard that Poirier has a long criminal record,

with many charges involving drugs. He has also previously served penitentiary time. Poirier works in carpentry and has one year completed towards his apprenticeship. The Federal Prosecutor and Poirier’s defense joined in a submission for an eightmonth sentence, taking in to consideration approximately two months of pretrial custody, with defense indicating there were triable issues. He was sentenced to eight months on each charge to run concurrently to each other.

A man stopped for a traffic infraction has received a one year suspended sentence for drug charges. Kent Pokojoy appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, May 25. He was charged with traffic offences as well as possession for the purposes of trafficking. He pleaded guilty to simple possession of drugs. On February 7 Pokojoy was traveling on Highway 9 North when the RCMP stopped him. They noted a substance on his clothing, which appeared to look like cocaine. He was found to be in possession of about 65 tablets of OxyContin. While charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, Federal Prosecutor Colin Kloot said it became apparent it was for his own use. He was given a one year suspended sentence and also racked up about $3,000 in fines for driving with no insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving without a license.

A man suspected in a shooting in Stettler on Monday morning apparently took his own life later in the afternoon. At about 9 a.m. on May 28 Settler RCMP responded to a complaint of a shot being fired at a female walking along a roadway in Stettler. Larger media reported the woman was hit by gunfire and was taken by STARS Air Ambulance to a Calgary hospital. The suspect was located, but fled from responding officers. He was later located in a rural area off of Highway 12 between Coronation and Castor. The RCMP Emergency Response team was called in and the man was surrounded in an approximately one-kilometre area. On Monday evening the RCMP issued a release stating the suspect in the incident died as a result of a self inflicted gunshot wound. A weapon was located in close proximity to the deceased.

A special trial date has been set for a man, who was charged with theft and possession of stolen property from the Drumheller Institution. The trial date has been set for October. The trial of Nathan Shandera was scheduled for Friday, May 25 in provincial court in Drumheller. An agent appeared on behalf of Shandera and his lawyer Balfour Der. Defense and prosecution agreed more trial time would be needed and made a joint application for a new trial date on Thursday, October 18. Shandera is charged with two counts of possession of stolen property and theft under $5,000. On September 26 of last year Drumheller received reports of theft of money and property from the Drumheller Institution. DinoFest roars into town today Michael James The Drumheller Mail

DinoFest, the new event celebrating all things prehistoric, starts today at the World's Largest Dinosaur and Rotary Spray Park. The site will be filled with tonnes of different activities for the family to enjoy, including music, activities for kids, Drumheller cook off, outdoor movies, and more. Things kick off this evening at 7 p.m. in the Rotary Spray Park. On the main stage, Fire it Up, Joe Vickers, and Cable Street will play some rockin’ tunes. Following that, at 9:45 p.m., ATB MovieNites will show Jurassic Park on a colossal three-story screen at the World’s Largest Dinosaur. For both nights at the MovieNite, there will be a prize package given away, which includes a two night stay at a Canatla hotel in Brooks and a fossil safari in Dinosaur Provincial Park. Attendees are asked to bring a mat, towel, blanket, or tarp to sit on. Lawn chairs are being discouraged as they can block people’s view. DinoFest continues at 10 a.m. the following morning at the Spray Park.

Encana is sponsoring Kids Zone; there will be a bouncy castle, mini golf, face painters, and more. From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. an exciting new event is giving festival attendees a chance to sample the cuisine of Drumheller. Seven restaurants will have booths set up at the Spray Park. Attendees can pay a small price and sample what each has to oﬀer. “It’s really coming along really strong,” said Seekers Media president Jim Barr. “We’ve got seven restaurants on site at DinoFest.” The Royal Tyrrell Museum will be hosting free talks in its auditorium starting at noon on Saturday, with “Fantastic Dinosaur Bonebeds of Aberta, Mongolia and China,” by Dr. Dave Eberth. Talks will follow at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. the same day. Entertainment at the main stage continues at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World will be shown at 9:45 p.m. “To help promote people to come back in the fall for the marathon, we’re doing a 5k run Sunday morning,” said Barr. “It’s really chill, you just show up and run or walk.” For a complete schedule of events, see pages 8 & 9.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Endangered ‘Cuda

This week’s inSide Ride is a 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda, owned by Armand Tessier of Drumheller Chrysler. Because the Barracuda and ‘Cuda convertibles were not big sellers, they were only built in 1970 and 1971. This makes them a rare find today, and desirable to collectors. Tessier had the car completely professionally restored and debuted it at the Boogie in the Badlands last weekend. The restoration came with a few changes, with upgrades to the suspension, brakes and a modern paint colour. He also muscled it up a bit, gone is the stock 318, and in its place is the legendary 440-Six Pack cranking a four speed, more than enough to launch the ‘Cuda off the line. Encana is supporting Drumheller’s DinoFest by bringing the KidsZone.

Drumheller’s DinoFest, presented by Canalta Hotels, welcomes Encana as its newest supporter, providing young dino fans hours of fun at the Encana KidsZone. “Our focus with this event is to attract families,” says Drumheller DinoFest President Dave Powell. “We really want to ensure there is a wealth of free options for our guests to take part in and are grateful for community partners such as Encana that make this possible.” Today, June 1, and throughout the weekend, the site of the world’s largest dinosaur will be converted into a festival celebrating Drumheller’s dinosaur culture. Features of the Encana KidsZone include a reverse bungy, sumo wrestling, face painters, and a dino-themed bouncy castle. “Our approach to community giving is to

Now me and my spouse live in Calgary and I commute everyday. What do you like most about Drumheller? The beauty of the landscape for sure, and the fact that we find lots of dinosaurs here. If you could, which dinosaur would you use as a mode of transportation and why? I would have to say a pterodactyl. It would speed up the commute from Calgary to fly the whole way, not to mention I would miss all the traffic. What is your favorite cartoon dinosaur and why? Dino from The Flintstones. He is the first cartoon dinosaur I can really remember from my childhood. What pre-historic animal would you like to keep as a pet? I wouldn’t mind a Triceratops. They are herbivores so it probably wouldn’t bite me. It also has lots of spikes and a big tail so it could protect me if need be. What is your favorite dinosaur-theme movie, besides Jurassic Park? Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. It’s an older movie but I remember it being a nice family movie. If you could travel back in time, what time

period would you visit and why? I would like to visit Alberta when the dinosaurs were still around. It would be interesting to see what they looked like in their living form rather than just at their bones and fossils. I also wouldn’t mind to go back to Ancient Egypt. It would be really neat to see how they accomplished such amazing architecture that still baffles experts today.

The club must raise an estimated $150,000 to make the new courts a reality by spring 2013.

It’ll be where the current parking lot and basketball court along Riverside Drive,” said Tennis Club member Jillian Augey. There had been several locations considered, but Golden Hills School Division donated the land and, considering the beautiful location, the choice was simple. The current courts are in rough shape and will be removed when work begins on the next phase of the Badlands Community Facility. The condition of the courts prevent schools from using them to teach tennis and are generally hard to play on. “It’s hard to learn tennis on the current court, the ball could hit a crack or weeds and fly off in another direc-

It’s not really the ideal setting for kids to learn,” said Augey. “We have some members that find the court too difficult to play on and drive to Carbon or Standard to play, which is a shame.” It is hoped with new courts, residents will be encouraged to give tennis a shot and schools will use them to teach tennis in phys -ed classes. “It’ll be open to everyone. We want kids and adults of all ages out playing. We’re hoping that even tourists will use it. We want it to be a really active area,” said Augey. “I’d like to bring in instructors from Tennis Alberta and hold clinics, so beginners can come out and learn how to play.” It is estimated $150,000 will be required to build the new courts. To build the courts, everything at the chosen location would need to be ripped up and built from scratch. “I was hoping we could resurface it, but the subsurface has shifted, so if we repaved the court, it would continue to shift and crumble,” said Augey. To make the courts a reality, the Tennis Club will be applying for grants to alleviate the cost and ramping up fundraising efforts. “We really need help from local residents and organizations with funding, work in kind, or volunteer,” said Augey. “If everyone gets on board, we can have it done by next spring.” Augey can be reached 403823-7447 or on the Drumheller Tennis Club Facebook page for anyone who is interested in helping out. The athletic achievements of St. Anthony’s School students will be celebrated this Tuesday night at their annual awards banquet. This is the 4th annual awards banquet, bringing together athletes who competed on all teams and it celebrates their successes. This year was a strong year for athletics, with athletes competing in virtually all interscholastic sports; beginning with golf, all the way to track and ﬁeld. Each year a speaker is invited to address the athletes and oﬀer words of encouragement to the student athletes pursuing their sporting discipline. This year they have invited back one of their own. Gage Murphy graduated from St. Anthony’s and went on to the University of Alberta
