Downtown unites for clean-up Michael James | inSide Drumheller
Downtown Drumheller is going to have a little summer cleaning thanks to the businesses that call the area home. On Wednesday, June 27, downtown businesses will take some time out of their day to give the heart of the town a little sprucing up. There is no formal time set for the clean-up, but during the day,
businesses will clean the area in front of their stores. “It’s really simple and straight forward. We’re basically organizing the businesses downtown to clean their own doorstep. Cleaning up the fronts of business, sidewalks, gutters. If there’s anything that needs repairs, document it...to get it resolved. The simple stuff can be tackled right away and the bigger stuff we can
work on,” said John Shoff, owner of Reality Bytes who is located downtown. The goal of the cleaning and documenting needed repairs is to make the area more inviting for tourists and for locals. The idea was sparked from a conversation on the Downtown Drumheller Facebook page. A former resident had posted some ideas for improvements and business owners and community members discussed ways to improve the area. Eventually, the idea was suggested to start reinvigorating downtown with a little tidying and a few other quick fixes. “I asked other retailers if they
wanted to take a day to clean up. If there was any bigger things we could tackle it then,” said Shoff. “They could clean up, hang a plant, and just help get the town ready for summer.” The clean-up may not be a one time event either. It is hoped the momentum here will carry on with subsequent downtown clean-ups or spread throughout Drumheller. “It’d be nice to do it a couple times a year to stay on top of it. I’d love for it to take off and maybe turn into a town wide cleanup to all do our part and spruce up the town for the summer,” said Shoff. “If everyone does their little part, it makes a big difference.”

A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison
As our book club met one last time before taking a summer break, we delved into discussion following our June read, “A Walk Across the Sun” by Corban Addison. This story provides a disturbing look into modern-day slavery, captive prostitution, child-trafficking and pornography. Wow what an eye-opener that was for all of us! The setting is in Mumbai, India with travel to Paris and the U.S. In the beginning, two “well-to do” teen-aged girls lose their home and family to a tsunami. They basically lose their lives as they one knew. The girls become separated, each living their own nightmare. The book alternates characters with the other being an American lawyer who takes a year sabbatical and works for a non-profit agency with a global human rights mission. His story includes his own personal problems and love life. Eventually, the two stories come together after his discovery of the first girl. He then vows to find her missing sister. Once again, as is the case in most of our stories, we found a message about hope and survival. This book is yet another wake up call as we discover another tragic part of a corrupt society. We live our lives being totally blind to so many other unfortunate lives. The author urges people to become aware of the problem of human trafficking, which he says affects almost every country in the world, generating over thirty billion dollars a year in profit. Reading this book is a good start. Simply being aware of such a devastating enterprise is a beginning. In the words of Corban Addison, “No problem is without a solution. We can make a difference – one word, one gift, one life at a time." In September, we will return to share all the trips we have taken between the pages of the books we choose over the summer. Kids learn growing, giving back through Community Gardens Michael James

Community Gardens is teaching young residents the value of good tilled earth by planting and growing produce in gardens throughout the Drumheller area. On Sunday, June 3, Community Gardens, with its young volunteers, were in the garden of Ray and Darlene Raketti to plant potatoes. “We rounded up interested kids and they had a great day. We have some summer students through the heritage garden project, some neighbourhood kids, and some from Greentree School garden club. It’s something that beneďŹ ts the entire community. It teaches kids to grow from the ground up and give back to their community,â€? said Alison MacDonald, a member of Community Gardens. “We don’t need our garden anymore, so we oered the use of it,â€? said Darlene Raketti. The potatoes grown at the Raketti’s will be going towards a good cause. Everything, including produce from the other gardens tended by Community Gardens, will be donated to the Salvation Army Food Bank.

Town, former Community Enforcement supervisor sued Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
A Carbon man is suing the Town of Drumheller and a former Community Enforcement supervisor for general and punitive damages stemming from a traďŹƒc stop last year. David Stewart, 60, former principal of Carbon School ďŹ led an original Statement of Claim to the Court of Queen’s Bench on May 9 of this year, and then an amended Statement of Claim on June 4, naming the Town of Drumheller and Peace OfďŹ cer Darcy Nundahl, who was employed by the Town of Drumheller at the time of the incident. The documents were ďŹ led by Sean T. FitzGerald of Miles Davison LLP, Legal Firm out of Calgary. Stewart’s claim states that on June 29, 2011 he was stopped by Nundahl. In the course of their interaction, Stewart was told he was under arrest, handcued and held in Nundahl’s town vehicle for about a half hour. As a result of the traďŹƒc stop, Stewart claims he suffered serious and permanent injuries to his shoulder and arm, which required surgery, as well as soft tissue injuries, bruising, lacerations and pain and suering. He also claims psychological and emotional injury. These claims are allegations and have not been proven in court. Criminal charges were not laid. Nundahl resigned his post from the Town of Drumheller earlier this year and is now a sheri in the Department of Justice for the Government of Yukon. The suit asks for $175,000 in general damages and $50,000 in punitive damages. inSide Drumheller sought comment from Mr. Nundahl, however he declined to make any statement. Drumheller Mayor Terry Yemen also declined to comment on the case as it is in the hands of the court. According to court documents, the defendants have 20 days to respond to the claim if they are inside Alberta, and one month if they are served outside the province. As of press time no Statement of Defense had been ďŹ led.

Canada Day Schedule of Events AROUND DRUMHELLER 7:00-10:00am
In one short week Drumheller, and the nation as a whole, will be celebrating one of the biggest days of the year. On Sunday, July 1, the streets will be alive with patriotism for Canada. There will be events throughout the day, but things kick into high gear at noon for the annual Drumheller Canada Day Parade. This year, the theme is “The Good Life.â€? “In previous years, the theme was targeted to speciďŹ c celebrations or anniversaries. With next year being Drumheller’s centennial, we know things will be planned around that. This year, we wanted people to have a little free reign with what they did with their oat,â€? said Roxanne Clark, projects coordinator and chamber assistant with the Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce. “We want people to let their oat show the things they are thankful for, make them happy, and just have fun with it.â€? There are roughly 50 oats registered so far, but the Chamber is accepting more. Those who are interested can ďŹ nd registration forms at the Chamber oďŹƒce at the World’s Largest Dinosaur or online at www.drumhellerchamber.com. The oats will be judged at 11 a.m. “It’s not meant to be anything too competitive. The judges go around and award ďŹ rst, second, and third place in each category,â€? said Clark. The parade begins at noon and lasts until roughly 2 p.m., but there is more in store for the day. Festivities at the Rotary Spray Park will begin at 2 p.m. with live music from eight bands, including the Fire Coulee Bandits, Roadside Attraction, Cat Country Cougar Hunters, The Lanigan Band, HooDoo Voodoo, Starland Sadie, and TIR NAN OG. On top of live entertainment there will be an inatable super slide, obstacle course, reverse bungie, and bouncy castle, children’s crafts, professional face painting and more. “We’re going to have a variety of activities for everyone of all ages,â€? said Cathy Smoliak, FCSS coordinator with the Town of Drumheller. At 6 p.m. at the Spray Park will be the singing of O Canada and the cutting of Canada’s birthday cake. Fireworks will start around 11 p.m. and will be set o on the north bank of the river across from the Spray Park. “Canada Day is a big celebration in our community, perhaps the biggest event of the year. We put a lot of energy and creativity in the day. Throughout summertime, The Weekender will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers. What brings you to Drumheller? (Melissa) We’re doing a road trip. Our son has a condition with his eyes that will mean he will eventually be blind. We wanted him so see as much as possible before that happened. Where have you been so far in this road trip? (David) We’ve seen Banff, Lake Louise, the icefields, and West Edmonton Mall. Where to next on the road trip? (David) We’re off to Regina next. (Melissa) We’re heading to PEI and then Philadelphia. What do you think of Drumheller so far? (Melissa) It’s awesome. The T. rex is amazing, who knew you had them here at one
point! If someone from Drumheller was heading to Whistler, what should they see? (Melissa) Ski. (David) It depends how adventurous they are. There’s bungie jumping and zip lines, but for hiking you have to do at least peak to peak. For biking, pick a mountain. (Melissa) There’s bear watching in Callahan. Skiing and snowshoing there is amazing. Would you come back? (Melissa) Oh yeah, for sure!

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves
in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

IRELAND Christine Louise December 19, 1966 - June 20, 2012 Christine Louise Ireland (nee Booth) was born December 19, 1966, passed away June 20, 2012 with her loving husband, Ken, by her side. Christine was born and raised in Drumheller to Erni (Jones) and John Booth. At a very young age her parents divorced and her mother married Brian Boe where Christine spent most of her childhood through to her teenage years. Christine loved the farm life and one of her favorite times of the year was harvest time, riding around in the grain trucks and the combine. Christine belonged to the Dalum 4-H Beef Club and learned the art of caring for animals. Christine’s biggest dream was to get married and raise a family. That dream came true in August 1985 when she married her soul mate and best friend Ken Ireland. Together they had two beautiful children; CJ was born in 1989 followed by Dustin in 1993. In 2003 Christine’s nephew Hunter became part of their family when she became his guardian. She loved Hunter as a son and raised him as one of her own. Rodeo, specifically pony chuckwagon racing, became a part of their life, as they spent every weekend in the summer on the circuit. Christine leaves to mourn, her husband Ken of 26 years, three children, CJ, Dustin and Hunter, her mother Erni (Bill), father John, mother-in-law Ruth (Dan), her brother Kerry (Angela), sisters Sine and Christy (Bryan), numerous nieces and nephews and her many rodeo friends. Junior Program Details: Our Junior Program this year will be on Mondays, starting July 9, and running until July 30 (4 Mondays).Here are the details: • Who: Anyone 6 years and older that likes to golf and wants to have some fun and learn new skills • What: 1 hour of instruction, followed by an hour of golfing to practice the skills you are learning. Taught by Phil McCluskey, CPGA Teaching Professional. • Where: Akokiniskway Golf Course, Rosebud • When: Mondays, July 9 to July 30. 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (includes lunch!) • Why: To learn new skills, golf a little, and have fun! • How: Call the pro shop 403-677-2250 to book your spot(s) Cost for the program is $20.00 per week, payable when you arrive. We are doing the program on a drop in basis, as we understand that summertime can be busy, and you may not be able to make it every Monday. We do, however, require that you contact us no later than the Friday before the Monday to let us know you are coming, so that we can be ready for you on Monday. We are also offering special rates if you want to stay after lunch and take your mom or dad out golfing to show off your new skills! The Drumheller Raptors and the FC Drumheller Slayers teams came head to head for the last league game on Monday, June 18. The teams came to a spirited 2-2 draw at the end of the battle. “I’ve been really pleased with the progress our players have made throughout the season. While they may have finished just out of the playoffs, they showed they represent a strong offensive threat,” said Paul Salvatore, Coach of the FC Drumheller Slayers. Salvatore said the game featured many scoring chances for the Slayers and many offensive threats that were stopped by a good, strong defensive core from the Raptors. “It was an exciting game, really a nail biter right down to the end,” said Mark Olbrich, Coach of the Drumheller Raptors. Salvatore said this was the last U-12 game for many players, as they will move up to the next age category in the next season, but a promising group
