On Thursday, June 12 St. Anthony’s School marked the Feast Day of St. Anthony, and what better way to recognize the occasion than to unveil a ceramic mural of St. Anthony and the baby Jesus. East Coulee Artist Janet Grabner completed the work. This is her fourth mosaic style public art piece she has completed and installed in schools. She tells inSide Drumheller she enjoys these projects and feels it is important for students to see public art and to see an artist at work. At the unveiling, are (l-r) Emma Doyle, artist Jane Grabner, principal JoAnne Akerboom, Matthew Doyle and Gabriella Kolafa.

Makayla Johnston “I like it when Daddy tickles me and says “Gonna get you’.” Dad, Steve Johnston “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Connor Prieston-Johnston “When I come home, he says ‘Hey Buddy’ sometimes.”

Approaching the oneyear anniversary of the June floods, the Town of Drumheller still waits for both funding payments and flood protection answers from the Government of Alberta. That situation has been made more confusing now by the Province’s announcement a few days ago of a different funding model for flood protection of critical municipal infrastructure, which includes roads, public buildings, and wastewater systems. The grant program announced by the Province covers 90 per cent of the costs of a project up to $3 million, leaving municipalities to cover the remaining ten per cent. For the Town of Drumheller, all the work estimated with Stantec Consulting amounts to about $15 million dollars. Mayor Terry Yemen, says under this program, the Town could be on the hook for more than a million dollars in flood mitigation project costs. “We were under the assumption it would be the 100 per cent that its always been,” said Yemen. “The municipality had no inclination...(We) met with them (the Province) over and over, and no one ever suggest-

ed there would be a cost share.” “I hate to say be patient, we are working through everybody’s situation, everybody’s file. But that is exactly what we’re doing.”

Fathers across Canada will be celebrated for being them this Sunday, June 15, on Father’s Day. inSide Drumheller asks: “What’s one of your Dad’s favourite sayings?”

Minister Dr. Richard Starke

Inside spoke Thursday morning with Alberta’s Tourism, Parks and Recreation Minister Dr. Richard Starke, who said he spoke with the Mayor about the Town’s misgivings. “I’m in the process of writing an email to my colleague in Municipal Affairs, just expressing some of the Mayor’s concerns - and we’ll deal with them.” “We’re going to work to make sure that situation is clarified and that the town is very upto-date as far as where things are at with that.” Mayor Yemen said the Town has previous correspondence from the Province recognizing the uniqueness of Drumheller and a commitment to full mitigation costs being Provincial responsibility. Yemen said the Town’s position remains the Government of Alberta pay 100 per cent of the costs. The Minister said he is

aware of everyone waiting on answers from the Province. “I think everybody appreciates the scope and the magnitude of the disaster we’re still dealing with. I hate to say be patient, we are working through everybody’s situation, everybody’s file. But that is exactly what we’re doing.” “Drumheller was discussed at a meeting I shared just yesterday, with regards to some of the work that is going to be done over the next little while, and it’s ongoing work. And I can tell you there’s a great number of balls in the air, if you want to call it that. There’s a lot of activity going on.” For valley residents who are dealing with uncertainty over their homes and property because of living in a floodway, Minister Starke wants them to pass that information along. “If there are specific situations, anecdotal instances where people are saying they’re having problems with regards

to mortgage renewals or caveats, or anything like that, if those situations come up, I urge those folks to get in touch with municipal officials, so they in turn can talk to people in Municipal Affairs, and we deal with providing financial institutions with the clarity they need so people can move on with their lives.” The Town of Drumheller may get answers an upcoming meeting with provincial officials. “There’s a meeting next week,” “ said the Mayor, “and I think we’ll have a better understanding then of what’s approved.” The Town is waiting on flood readiness grant money of approximately $984,000, plus grant money of just over $600,000 to cover the costs of work done during the 2013 flood, and the Mayor estimates another $400,000 to be claimed for reimbursement once the Town completes work on the roads damaged during the flood.

ST. ANTHONY’S SCHOOL

Class of 2014 encouraged to follow dreams Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

On Saturday morning, June 7, 19 students took a step across a stage and into the next phase of their life as they graduated from St. Anthony’s School. Family, friends, faculty and well-wishers gathered in the school’s gymnasium to watch the youth convocate. Bringing congratulatory messages were Drumheller-Stettler MLA Rick Strankman, Mayor Terry Yemen, Christ the Redeemer School Division Trustee Mark Chung, Christ the Redeemer School Division Superintendent Scott Morrison and Principal JoAnne Akerboom. “Today you see the culminations of 12 years of hard work, dedication and hopefully a little fun along the way, pay off,” said Mayor Yemen. “I trust your time here at St. Anthony’s gave you the tools you need to go out into the world and make your mark.” “As you enter the next phase of your journey please remember that Drumheller is behind you, supports you and brings vision for you.” Principal Akerboom shared passages the student wrote upon completion of their volunteer projects. She also had some advice. “With courage, hard work and persistence it is amazing what can be accomplished, so go after your dreams, the results are worth it,” she said. Sarah Armstrong was the Salutatorian and brought a message of thanks to the parents and teachers. Principal Akerboom presented the graduates with their diploma, MLA Strankman presented the students with their provincial certificates, Ms. Chris Bzdel and Mr. Tom Stolz made a presentation from St. Anthony’s School and Mayor Terry Yemen presented the students with Town of Drumheller pins. Jakub St. Jean delivered the Valediction address. He had a very personal message to his fellow students. “Many of you are my closest friends and it is strange to think you were all once strangers to me. I like how our class has grown together because everyone has grown out of their groups and socialize together,” he said. “I believe everyone here has good times ahead. Sometimes you have to go get them, they won’t come to you. The worst thing we can do with our lives is something we don’t love. Life is too short to do something that doesn’t give you pleasure,” said St. Jean. “Do something you love with your life instead of following the path that other have made for you.” MLA Rick Strankman addresses the St. Anthony’s Class of 2014.

Congratulations to St. Anthony’s Class of 2014. They are (back; l-r) Travis Dietrich, Jaden Hamm, Nathan Comstock, Dennis Bijvank and Matthew Duncalf, with (2nd row; l-r) Jakub St. Jean, Ryan Cardamone, Joshua Hewitt, Jeff Su-

zon and Arvin Guiling, along with (3rd row; l-r) Andrew Kozak, Sarah Armstrong, Tyler Cosens and Christina Pugh, with (front; l-r) Gerone Baltazar, Brian Wiechel, Luis Pulvinar, Anthony Piecowye and Marika Zabat.

HELICOPTER TOURS Who are you? Nadine Roy (back left) and Angella McKay (back right), parent chaperones. Where are you from? We’re here with grade six kids from Ile-a-laCrosse, Saskatchewan, that province’s second oldest community. Mr. and Mrs. Brown (each teach a Grade 6 class) fundraise throughout the year for this trip. Where did the group arrive from? Nadine - We spent the night in Kindersley and drove straight through to here. What’s on your tour list today? Angela-We arrived here at noon, had lunch at the Royal Tyrrell, did a guid-

ed hike, went to Reptile World, came to the World’s Largest Dinosaur, going to Fred & Barney’s for supper, then touring the inside of the Royal Tyrrell Museum. We’re trying to expose the kids to as many new things as we can. Nadine - then Hotel, slumber, and to Edmonton tomorrow. It’s the experience of a lifetime. What is your favourite dinosaur? Nadine and at least four kids chose The World’s Largest Dinosaur; a number of kids named the Tyrannosaurus Rex their favourite, the Velociraptor and Albertosaurus were also chosen, and one wise-cracker named the Theosaurus.

DinoFest roars into town today

Do dinosaurs like pancakes? Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

If dinosaurs ate pancakes, they would probably head to DinoFest this weekend! The DinoFest free pancake breakfast runs both Saturday and Sunday morning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m, serving up pancakes, sausages, juice and coffee. The breakfasts are sponsored by the local Freson Bros. and Drumheller’s Rotary Club. The DinoFest site, full of free family fun, is once again at the foot of the World’s Largest Dinosaur. There are a number of sponsors for DinoFest, which means people can go to DinoFest to have a lot of fun and not spend a lot of money. The Encana’s Kidzone is free, offering kids a Jurassic Park themed bouncy castle and a 25-foot inflatable slide to have some fun on. Free ATB Financial Movie nights are happening on the three-story screen at the World’s Largest Dinosaur, scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. Bring your chairs, blankets, drinks and snacks down (don’t forget the mosquito spray...), and settle in for some extra-big-screen entertainment. Friday night’s movie is The Croods, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards. The movie centers on a pre-historic family travelling in search of a new home. Saturday night’s movie scheduled for a 10:30 p.m. start is Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It tells the story of three people’s journey to a different world far beneath the surface of the earth. Warner Bros. describes this movie as “an exciting adventure based on the classic Jules Verne Novel.” The Badlands Community Facility will host the movies inside their facility in the event the weather is too poor for outside viewing. Also to enjoy at DinoFest, the Royal Tyrrell Mu-

Prehistoric Drumhellerites of all ages came out to enjoy the 2013 DinoFest parade. Take part in the parade Saturday morning at 9 a.m., then enjoy a free pancake breakfast until 11 a.m. file photo

seum will have a science education team providing hands on displays, story time on the main stage, and a 15 minute interactive Science Break that teaches information on the prehistoric world. There’s plenty of entertainment on the DinoFest

Main Stage, starting off on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. when the Drumheller Valley Secondary School’s choir performs. For a list of events taking place on the Main Stage, visit the “Dinotainment” heading on the DinoFest website at www.drumhellerdinofest.com. The complete weekend schedule of events is posted on the DinoFest website. Entry into the DinoFest parades is free of charge. There are two parades this year, the first Friday night at 5:00 p.m., and the second Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. DinoFest has vendors and artisans scheduled for the festival from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Come out and cheer on the athletes entered in the DinoFest Triathalon, which starts Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning at 9 a.m. is a free 5 K Family Fun Run. And don’t forget to purchase some tickets to try out local restaurants in “Taste of the Valley” from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. And here’s hoping the weather co-operates....

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Food for

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist Gluten-Free Baking Gluten-free baking is becoming increasingly popular these days. It is not uncommon these days to be acquainted with someone who is on a “GF” diet. There are so many types of flours and baking substitutes out there nowadays, it is quite a trial by error ordeal to know where to begin. I learned the hard way that coconut flour cannot be substituted on its own!!! I am quite a beginner in this category and have produced my share of rock-hard breads and delicacies that taste like cardboard! Here is a list of some flours and ingredients that are helpful. I will continue to add tried and true recipes as I continue to experiment in this category. I have had success with banana breads – thankfully bananas add moisture and flavor. Rice Flour – Rice flour (brown or white) is great to use as the major flour combined with small amounts of other flours, but not on by itself. The fine, almost sandy texture can be unpleasant unless combined with other flours. The relatively bland flavour lets the others shine through. Use white rice flour as a base when a traditional white colour is expected, such as white cakes or cupcakes. Brown Rice Flour - Milled from the whole grain, this flour has a grainy texture and a pale creamy colour just a shade darker than white rice flour. It’s got a deeper, nutty flavour than its white counterpart and is great in muffins, pancakes, breads, biscuit, cookies and other baked goods where you want a rich, nutty flavour to come through. Quinoa Flour - Because of its strong flavour quinoa flour is best used in small quantities combined with other flours, such as rice flour. It gives baked goods a tender, moist crumb and is great for pancakes and muffins. Buckwheat Flour - Although its name might suggest otherwise, buckwheat is entirely gluten-free. Available either light (hulled) or dark (unhulled) the fine, strong flavoured flour is traditionally used in blinis, pancakes, crepes, soba noodles and in waffles. It’s also great used in part for baking breads and quick breads.

Chickpea Flour - Because of the high protein in chickpea (and other bean flours) the end results tend to be more tender and to rise more. However, they have strong flavours and so are best used in part with another mild-flavoured flour, such as rice, for best results. Use some chickpea and other bean flours in any baked goods, especially those with strong flavours such as molasses and brown sugar and chocolate that will ‘mask’ some of the bean-y flavour. Nut Flour/Meal – Made from finely ground nuts, these are what to go to when you desire a rich, nutty taste from your baked goods. Almond flour is readily available, but you can grind up many nuts and use the ‘flour’ as part of a baking mix. Ground hazelnuts and chocolate sound like a delicious combination for a cake! Try toasting the nuts first to further develop the nutty flavour and to dry the flour a bit prevent clumping. Gluten-free all-purpose flour blends - Many brands are available of already blended gluten-free flours. Of course, if the recipe specifies otherwise, stick with what the recipe says. Xanthan gum is a fine, off-white powder used in gluten-free baking to bind, thicken and emulsify gluten-free ingredients. It does this by mimicking the structural qualities of gluten and provides good crumb and texture to the baked goods. Xanthan gum is made by fermenting corn sugar. As a general rule, add 1 teaspoon of xanthan gum to 1 cup of gf flour mixture for breads and doughs. For cookies, cakes, muffins, bars and squares use about 1/2 teaspoon of the gum to 1 cup gf flour. And if you are looking at dairy-free, but even if you aren’t, I find coconut milk or almond milk add a nice flavor, just as coconut sugar and coconut oils do. There is a powdered egg substitute that you mix with water. I have used it in breads, cakes, muffins and pancakes. It is found in the area that gluten-free flours are found. It is possible to do a gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free bread, cake, muffin, cookie or pancake!!

Age: 26. No, I wish! 36. Occupation: Teacher, Drumheller Valley Secondary School How long have you lived here? Since 2007, moved here to teach, from Edmonton, where I got my Education degree at the U of A. Born & raised in Cold Lake (parents are still there). Why did you move here? Perfect fit for me and my family. Tricia (wife) and I were both raised in small towns. Where are you in your family? Youngest of 4 boys. I got picked on a lot. What do you love most about your Dad? I love that I have the most unique Dad ever - he’s a horticulturist, hairdresser, floral designer, and baker. Are you a Dad? I am. I have three girls: Six yearold twins and a three year old. And a baby on the way. Do you buy in bulk? (laughs.) Of course. What’s meal time like at

your house? We always, always, eat dinner at the table together as a family. It’s our time to talk, even though it gets chaotic. Your favourite thing about being a Dad? It’s just fun being a father of little girls - playtime, and watching them grow. It’s just amazing. Most challenging thing about being a Dad? Bed time. It drives me nuts. What’s the most important thing you could teach your kids at this age? To have respect and care for those around you. If you could take your wife away for a week... To Waikiki, so my wife could sit on the beach & relax and I could do every adventurous thing I could find. Do you have some advice for new Dads? Make sure you take time for your kids. Happy Fathers’ Day, and Happy Birthday, Tricia!

“The Kitchen House” Kathleen Grissom

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Book Columnist

Our book club celebrated the end of another year of great reading, food, friendships and inspiring discussions. Our main focus was the book “The Kitchen House” by Kathleen Grissom. Everyone enjoyed the book and found it hard to put down. The timing fit well with the movie “12 Years a Slave” just coming out. We get a look at what a “kitchen house” and the surrounding area actually is like. This novel is set on a plantation and shows similarities in the lives of the slaves and the white families. Not everyone lived the good life simply because they lived up in the “big house.” The main character is a young 7 year-old girl who is an Irish orphan. Her life is intertwined with both the big house and the kitchen house. As she grows, she begins to see the difference between master and slave. Parts of the story are told in the voice of a black slave who was fathered by the white master. Your heart breaks for her throughout this book. You sense the fear that these people lived with daily. There are many horrific scenes this author describes throughout the book. We are reminded of this reality in history. The importance of family and belonging is apparent in this book. We read of tragedy, resilience, good and evil, joy and sorrow. This book and its characters captivate you from beginning to end.

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our Husband and Father Bryan Finnimore, who passed away peacefully June 2, 2014 in Drumheller Alberta with his family by his side. Bryan was born July 9, 1940 in St. Rose du Lac, Manitoba. He was raised on his family farm in Norgate Manitoba. In 1961 he married his soul mate Elaine. In 1964 Bryan and Elaine welcomed their daughter Lorelei to the family and in 1970 their son Dean. Lorelei married Gord Tedischini in 1984 and in 2013 Dean married Jenny Vredegoor. Bryan was a B Pressure Welder by trade and upon retirement Bryan and Elaine moved to Rosedale, AB in 2002 and have called Drumheller home since then. Bryan leaves to mourn his loving wife Elaine Finnimore, his daughter Lorelei Tedischini (Gord), son Dean Finnimore (Jenny), brother Cliff Finnimore (Jay), sister Evelyn Harper (Ivan), numerous nieces, nephews and lifetime friends. Bryan was predeceased by his mother Louise, father Charlie, sister Kathleen (Gerald), brother Leonard, brother Harry (Jean), and three infant children. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Bryan’s name to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation (Continuing Care Unit) 351-9th ST N.W. Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y1 or The Arthritis Society of Alberta and N.W.T. Division 1301 8th St. S.W. Suite 200, Calgary, AB T2R 1B7. Bryan’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude for all the visits, calls, cards and emails over the last week. It is has been a great comfort. We would also like to thank the staff at both the Hanna Long Term Care and the Drumheller Continuing Care for taking such great care of our husband and Dad over the last 9 months. Your care and compassion was so appreciated. 24nc

Rose Marie Foster was born and raised in Calgary, AB but was called to the country life as a young adult where she spent her days as an active member of the Drumheller community, volunteering and brightening the days of her many friends with her vibrant smile and unique brand of humour. With the help of her loving spouse of 17 years and her supportive sponsor Tom Ashmore, she maintained her sobriety for 14 years and remained a true inspiration to the people of her group facing the same tough battle. On June 8, 2014 her beautiful spirit left this stage for the next, leaving behind fond memories of her stubborn strength and kind heart. She is survived by her daughter Amber May, son DJ and common law husband Mike Cherpak. Service will be held Monday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Courtney Winters Funeral Chapel. Interment to follow at Munson Cemetery. 24p

The Royal Tyrrell Museum has an eye for expansion, but it may be a ways away. An application for a development permit was posted by the Town of Drumheller, taken out by Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning for “Royal Tyrrell Museum Expansion.â€? Executive Director for the Tyrrell Museum Andrew Neuman says no such expansion is currently in the works. He said the company was engaged by Alberta Infrastructure to develop an expansion plan for the ATCO Learning Centre. He says as this point there is nothing deďŹ nite. He explains when the Learning Centre was built, there were some elements of the original plan that were not developed at the time of construction. “These have always been considered, but sometime at a later date,â€? said Neuman, At this time, he said there is no funding allocated to such a project.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Players on the U14 team of Drumheller’s Minor Soccer League will start training this weekend for provincial team spots. Coach Mark Olbrich said the U14s have completed their regular league games for the season, and some of the kids are off to Carstairs Sunday.

June 13 - June 15

“We’re probably going to have three or four of the girls try out and three or four of the boys try out.” Mark Olbrich

That’s when district practice for provincial team placement starts. The district coach selects a few players from each team to put together a Tier 3 soccer team. “We’re probably going to have three or four of the girls try out and three or four of the boys try out,” said coach Ohlbrich. He said the kids will practice in Carstairs every two weeks until about the end of July, and the provincials are held mid-August. The U14 team was hard at practice Thursday night in the cool, windy weather, at the soccer fields in the HyGrade Industrial Park.
