Chris Ryan “Not as much. I look at the scores, but that’s about it.”

Ed Peake “Yup, I’m a hockey fan.”

Dan Thom “The only reason I’m watching is because it’s an original six series, so it’ll be interesting. Go Bruins! For Reid Kelly, Go Hawks!”

Schools, RCMP target sexting Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The world has never been more connected. In an instant, a picture can be taken and emailed to others. While certainly there are advantages, there is a darker side. Parents and teens all over Canada, including Drumheller, are being taught how to be safe using the latest social technology, especially in regards to sexting, where people send pictures or messages of a sexual nature to one another. inSide Drumheller spoke with the Drumheller RCMP and local schools to find out what is being done locally about sexting. The RCMP host presentations throughout the year to teach students and parents about the dangers of an increasingly digital world. “A lot of the students have been spoken to in a number of different ways. Any incident that comes too close to it that we hear of, we discuss with the kids,” said Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins. “A lot of it is not done with the intent to traffic pornography, the kids may not understand what they are doing. That picture could come back to haunt them many years after the fact.” The RCMP have hosted sessions for both junior and senior high students. “They’re great presentations, because they talk about everything. Nothing is taboo, which is great. The kids are talking about it anyway, so to hide it from them won’t make it go away,” said Amber Channell, Family School Liaison

Worker for St. Anthony’s School. At Drumheller Valley Secondary School, the “No Regrets” campaign has touched upon sexting. “We spend a lot of time and energy teaching our students about using digital devices responsibly. We have addressed the issues of texting, appropriate use of texting, and sexting. We just finished a yearand-a-half campaign, our No Regrets campaign, which didn’t deal with sexting specifically, but talked about healthy relationships and how to identify a relationship when it’s not healthy,” said principal Curtis LaPierre. Teachers are also ready to help students one-onone should issues arise. “After these presentations, I had students come in being upset and admitting they had sent pictures of themselves. They began to realize the dangers of some of the things they had done,” said Channell. However, both the schools and RCMP agree, if sexting is to stop, parents must get involved. “With anything that impacts the lives of students, especially in a negative way, schools get involved. If we find issues like that, we always call the parents and inform them of what is going on,” said LaPierre. “There have been a small number of issues at this time. I think it’s very important for parents to monitor what their child is doing with their digital devices and some parameters be put in place. If they’re using

their phones in an inappropriate way, maybe it’s time to remove that privilege.” A proactive approach, it is suggested, is for parents to speak with their children about sexting. “There is education being done, but parents need to talk to their kids about their phones and the consequences of what they send,” said Hopkins. The best approach, LaPierre suggests, is to tackle the issue head on. “Don’t beat around the bush, get right to the point, and put everything on the table. I’ve found kids appreciate that approach more. It’s amazing what kids will take ownership of with direct communication and if there’s been an issue, generally they will tell you,” said LaPierre.

Andrew Kloot continues undefeated streak Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The star is rising for mixed martial artist and Drumheller native Andrew Kloot. On Friday, June 7, Kloot was in Red Deer for the Havoc Fight Club Fight Night. Kloot stunned the crowd, and his opponent, Brett Alberts, by winning with a technical knockout 38 seconds into the fight. So far, Kloot has gone undefeated in three fights in his amateur mixed martial arts career. “It feels pretty amazing. You get nervous before the fight, so it’s great when it ends up in your favour,” said Kloot. “I’ve finished all my fights in a minute or less, so others guys will probably have theirs eyes on me for sure.” When the fight started, it didn’t take long for Kloot to get the upper hand and the win. “He came out, we circled for a bit,

and exchange some combinations. I managed to get him in a clinch and hit him with some knees in the stomach, and then an uppercut. It rocked him pretty good. He stumbled and I hit him with a couple more shots. Then, the ref stepped in and he dropped to the ground,” said Kloot. For now, Kloot will continue to concentrate on his training and may take another fight should the opportunity arise. If all goes well, Kloot may head to the big leagues as a professional fighter. “I’ll take a little bit of a break and maybe try to get my blue belt in Brazilian jujitsu,” “But, if my manager approaches me with another fight soon, I might take it,” said Kloot. “I’m thinking about going pro pretty soon. I’d like to get my blue belt before doing that, though. I’m hoping maybe by the end of this year or early next year. There would be much tougher competition.”

Area youth signing up for bike trek Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

So far, 11 dedicated Drumheller youth are signing up to take on a grueling trek from the Valley to Banff on bicycles this summer. A number of Drumheller youth have taken up the Duke of Edinburgh Challenge and Two Wheel View is giving them a chance to fulfill many of their requirements during a seven-day bike trip. They are getting closer to hitting the road. Grade 10 student Josh Wolfe is planning to go on the trek and put the experience towards earning his silver Duke of Edinburgh award. He has never taken on such a challenge before, but he is pumped. “I have never really done a biking

trip, but I have done lots of camping,” he said. Most of the participants who registered for the trek, slated for August 20-27, are Duke of Edinburgh candidates. They have a lot to do to get ready for the ride, besides getting in shape to pedal up to 50 kilometres a day. Two Wheel View outfits the riders with their bike and camping equipment, helps with route coordination, and orientations before the program. The participants have a number of responsibilities in preparing for the excursion. The biggest is fundraising. Each participant has a fundraising goal of $750 and the group is already working on ways to come up

with the funds. This weekend they are hosting a barbecue at the Drumheller Co-op to raise the funds. On June 22, they are hosting a major event at Freson Bros IGA. This includes a Bike Safety presentation from members of the Drumheller RCMP. Corporal Kevin Charles says Canadian Tire is also supporting the event with prizes and participants will be hosting a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The group is planning to collect bottles and perform other fundraising endeavours. Look for them in the community working towards their goal.

Ride for Dads rolls through Drumheller Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Motorcycle enthusiasts will have a chance to go hog wild for a good cause later this month. On June 22, the fifth annual Rurals Chapters Ride for Dad will be riding through Drumheller and will make a stop at Westergard Ford. “The riders will be rolling into Drumheller and stopping at Westergard Ford for lunch for about an hour. This is a perfect time to take photographs and to talk with the riders about why they are doing this,” said Dean Harper, media relations for the ride. The ride aims to raise funds to combat and bring awareness to prostate cancer, one of the most deadly, but preventable, diseases in

men. “The money the riders collect goes towards research and awareness. A lot of these guys have a direct link to prostate cancer. I lost my grandfather to prostate cancer,” said Harper. “It is the most survivable disease with early detection, but the thing is, men don’t want to go to the doctor unless our wives, moms, or girlfriends are dragging us. Take that three to four seconds and be done with it. You’re not only saving your life, you’re saving your family. It affects everyone.” In five years, the ride has raised over $500,000 across the province. The ride will also be a chance for motorcycle lovers to speak with fellow enthusiasts. It is expected 75 to

TOWN OF DRUMHELLER

150 riders will attend, depending on the weather. “We have such a diverse mix of bikes and riders. Everything from scooters to trikes, from 16-yearolds to 60 year olds. It’s a really good mix of people riding with one goal in place; get awareness out about this terrible disease and save men’s lives,” said Harper. After they leave Drumheller, via North Dinosaur Trail, the riders will head to Didsbury for dinner and a concert with Juno Award winner Clayton Bellamy. “Anyone who wants to learn more about prostate cancer or talk about bikes is more than welcome to stop by,” said Harper. “If you see the bikes going by, wave. You’d be surprised how far that wave goes for the rider.”

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

The price tag of any vacation can add up quickly. Thankfully, Drumheller has a plethora of activities that don’t cost a dime. For anyone who wants to get the full Drumheller experience, here are a few things to do that are free of charge. Dinosaur Trail Drive. Take a scenic cruise along Drumheller’s unique badlands terrain. To start on the trail, head west on North Dinosaur Trail (Highway 838). On the way, there is the Little Church, Horsethief Canyon, and the half way point will take visitors to the Bleriot Ferry, one of Alberta’s few remaining ferries. From there, head south on Highway 837 to enjoy the second half of the drive and see the Valley from the Orkney Viewpoint. Drumheller Nature Trail. This scenic trail takes hikers and bikers from Drumhelller Valley Secondary School, along the river, to the Rotary Spray Park. From there, the trail heads across the river to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, where it connects with the Midland Provincial Park trail system. The Rotary Spray Park. Motorists driving through Drumheller can’t

help but notice the Spray Park, with the soaring fountain and World’s Largest Dinosaur. The Spray Park is one of Drumheller’s most popular stops, with picnic benches, spray cannons, the fountain, and is adjacent to the Drumheller Nature Trail, Aquaplex, and World’s Largest Dinosaur. Rosedale’s Swinging Bridge. Talk a walk over history at the Swinging Bridge, located east of Drumheller in Rosedale. The bridge was used in Drumheller’s coal mining era as a way for miners to cross the river between the Star Mine and their homes in Rosedale. After being rebuilt in 1958, the bridge offers a way for visitors to access iconic badlands terrain. Dinosaur hunting. One of Drumheller’s most unique features are the dinosaurs spread across town. Many of the “cementosaurs” were built by local artist Tig Seland for Prehistoric Park and were later scattered throughout town. Drumheller’s DinoArts Association currently maintains the dinosaurs and unveiled two new ones in downtown Drumheller. Looking for the dinosaurs is a great way to see town and makes for some great photos. Fossil hunting. Want to experience the thrill of hunting fossils?

The badlands are teeming with the remains of prehistoric creatures. The badlands in Midland Provincial Park are a convenient place to harness the inner palaeontologist. Anyone prospecting for fossils is asked to keep in mind that it is illegal to collect fossils from any provincial or federal park. Excavating fossils anywhere is not allowed without a valid permit. The Hoodoos. Drumheller has some of Canada’s most recognizable hoodoos located east of Drumheller on Highway 10. The site has seen some big changes, including a new raised platform for visitors. Visitors are asked to help preserve the hoodoos by not climbing on them and keeping to the established paths. Hiking in the badlands. Drumheller is surrounded by some of Canada’s most spectacular badlands. Those wanting some adventure can hike through Horseshoe Canyon, south of Drumheller on Highway 9, and Horsethief Canyon, west along North Dinosaur Trail (also known as Highway 838). Visitors should keep to established trails, wear sturdy footwear, bring plenty or water, and wear bug spray.

Her book delves into their struggles and conveys how they overcome adversity and remain positive throughout. The first story involves a mother of two who deals with both weight loss and abuse/domestic violence. The second person faces the challenge of cancer survival and fertility. Next is a prominent young tv producer who is diagnosed with HIV and succumbs to drug addiction after one-time sample of crystal meth. Fourth is an epileptic woman athlete who undergoes brain surgery. She uses running as her means of coping. The extreme marathons she tackles are more than inspiring. A man who finds himself in the midst of the 9/11 tragedy is the fifth story. Baby Shower for Jesus yields great results St. Anthony’s C.W.L. held a “Baby Shower for Jesus”, collecting new and gently used baby and maternity items which were donated to the Growing Opportunities program at the Drumheller Health Centre. Growing Opportunities is a pre and postnatal program providing prenatal care and education, counselling, nutrition and baby care information, and many other supports through one-onone visits with a nurse, nutritionist and support worker. The program also offers referrals to other community agencies, depending on the needs of the client. spends the next ten years of his life dealing with the repercussions of living this horror and the trials of his personal grief. Story number six is the amazing account of a rags-to-riches tale involving a single mother, her estranged father and an eccentric business partner. After reading this one, I now look differently at this product, which I commonly used without giving a thought to its origins. In this book, each person found a way to rise up and overcome utter despair, never letting circumstances dictate their lives. They all had a drive that kept them moving forward and staying positive. We can all learn something from each one of these people and their incredible life-stories. I highly recommend this as a summer read!

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you may not feel that something you did is funny, but others are bowled over with laughter. Play along so you don’t come across as a spoil sport. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Expect your schedule to become quite hectic in the next few days, Capricorn. You may want to tie up any loose ends now and use any free time to rest. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, a burst of energy has you flying through all of those little projects that you have been putting off. Once you are done, you may have to create a new list. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, though you feel like you have just been going through the motions, others are far more impressed than you think.

Lloyd (left) and Shelley Morgan of Valley Auto Recyclers donated $500 to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, represented by Christy Parker. Each year, the Alberta Auto Recyclers and Dismantlers Association has money left over from membership dues and gives select members the opportunity to donate $500 to a charity of their choice. Although the Morgan Jayne Project is near and dear to the Morgan family, they chose to donate to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Their 10 week old granddaughter, Kooper, was saved by the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and, after a 12 day stay, she was off life support and well enough to come home. The Morgan’s praised the amazing care for Kooper and her parents. Lloyd and Shelley also chose to donate in light of other families in Drumheller who travel there for ongoing treatment.

The remaining thirteen individuals and four teams did the sprint race, which is half the distance. Brad Hale took top spot in the Olympic distance with an overall time of 2:33:35. Mike MacDonald took second with a time of 2:43:18 and Morgan Syvertsen placed third with a time of 2:47:40. Laura Hegberg was the champion of the sprint distance, finishing it in 1:20:18. Ben Borkovic placed second with a time of 1:23:53 and Kali Wade came in third with a time of 1:27:39. The top team finished with a time of 1:34:50. The race is being counted as a success by organizer Morgan Syvertsen and discussions have started to make the race bigger and better for next year. “I think it went really well. I talked to a few people who are really into triathlons and are keen to form an organizing committee next year. Next year, we could go public and advertise outside the valley. It could triple the numbers, which would change the logistics quite a bit,” said Syvertsen. Creating an official organization would require organizers to jump through a few more hoops next year. “If we go bigger, we’re going to have to connect with the ATA (Alberta Triathlon Association), which means everyone would have to get a one
