A view of the Red Deer River from the Orkney Viewpoint. As rain pours across the province and moisture accumulates, all eyes in Drumheller are fixed on the Red Deer River. Almost exactly one year to the day later, communities throughout Southern Alberta are seeing rivers cresting and water levels rising. As of press time there are no warnings regarding the Red Deer River Basin or the Drumheller area. See complete coverage on this season’s conditions on Page 2. inSIde photo by Patrick Kolafa

Town monitoring weather, water levels Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller will be keeping a close eye on river levels over the next few days. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Terry Yemen said the storm system causing the rainfall in the Southern part of the province is expected to bypass Drumheller, but the Town is being cautious. “It looks like it’s not going to come this far

north, but if it does, just in case, we’re going to continue monitoring over the weekend.” “We’re all on readiness,” said Fire Chief Bill Bachynski, who is also the Town’s Deputy Director, Disaster Services. 'We’re not anticipating any problems.” If the situation changes, Bachynski said, the Town is prepared and able to respond. The Mayor has also checked on levels from

Dickson Dam, and said the current flow rate out of the dam is 50 cubic metres per second. He also noted flow rates on the Red Deer River are currently 200 cubic metres per second. “When we get up to that 1200 cubic metres per second, that’s when we start to worry.” “One of the things in our favour,” the Mayor adds, “is that most of The Town said flow rates on the Red Deer River are curthe snow cap is gone.” rently at 200 cubic metres per second as of 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 18.

The province has issued an emergency alert 2:59 p.m. Thursday. A flood alert was issued for Mountain View County, Red Deer County and parts of Southern Alberta. The province also provided an update Thursday afternoon on flooding and flood watches and warnings in Southern Alberta. As of 2 p.m. Thursday, Evan Friesenhan of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development said there is only one flood watch for the Red Deer River basin, the Little Red Deer River, adding the water level is currently falling. Steven Carr, director of central operations, Alberta Emergency Management Agency, said their chief concern at this point is the Blood Reserve and the Town of Claresholm. Carr said about 130 homes on the Blood Tribe have been affected by flooding. Across the province 500 homes have been affected, including homes on the Blood Tribe and in Lethbridge. Most of that is due to overland flooding

and sewer back up, he said, because of the amount of rainfall, rather than from river flow. Friesenhan said current predictions have the Oldman River, which is still rising, peaking at 2100 cubic metres per second in Lethbridge Friday morning, and the South

Saskatchewan rising another 2.4 metres to peak in Medicine Hat at an estimated 2700 cubic metres per second Saturday mid-day. A Flood Watch has been issued for Mosquito Creek in the Oldman River basin. A high streamflow advisory has been issued for Little Bow River in the Oldman River basin. The flood warning remains in effect for the South Saskatchewan, Waterton (including Waterton Lake), Belly Rivers and Willow Creek. The flood watch and high stream flow advisories are still in effect for streams in the Bow, Oldman, Milk and Red Deer River basins. The high streamflow advisory for the rivers and streams flowing out of the Cypress Hills has ended. As well, rivers and streams out of the Crowsnest River have been downgraded to a flood watch. The Municipal District of Taber and the town of Magrath declared local states of emergency Thursday about 10:45 a.m., bringing the total number of Alberta communities under a local state of emergency to twelve as of 2 p.m., June 19.

The Town of Drumheller met with provincial officials in Drumheller Thursday to discuss flood related issues affecting Drumheller that came as a result the high water event of 2013. “I felt it was a very positive meeting,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. “They have a clear understanding of what our expectations are.” Yemen said the main discussion in the meeting focused on flood mapping and the flood exemption zone. He said land use was also discussed at the meeting, but that everything is hinging on the flood mapping. The Mayor noted the province’s current mapping still shows mostly floodway, and the Town would like that updated. “There was some consensus. There still will be a floodway, but it’ll be very minimal to what there is right now,” says Yemen. Yemen said the majority of what the Alberta Government map currently shows would be exemption, because of mitigated flows from the dam and flood mitigation work the Town has done. “We’ll be looking at an exemption zone , which will be the majority of what is currently a flood zone. Then there will be the flood

fringe, which we already had established,” Yemen explained. He said new mapping would have most of the flood way as an exemption zone (all through different parts of Drumheller from Midland to Rosedale). The province would like the Town to take the lead on an engineering study and cost analysis of mitigation versus relocation for certain areas, such as Lehigh, and provides funding for staff position to accomplish that. The Town also reiterated at the meeting its position on flood mitigation funding, pointing out the provincial agreement from 1985 and the Town’s view current projects are an extension of that agreement. Yemen notes that property buy outs are still on the table. The Mayor said it’s all back in the hands of the province for approval, although the Town wasn’t given a definite time frame for the Town to expect answers back. “There’s still lots of questions that have to be answered. It’s unfortunate some of these questions couldn’t have been answered months ago.”

One of the winners of a short film funding competition has basing his next film in the Drumheller area. Calgary filmmaker Spencer Estabrooks was in town over the June 15 weekend scouting locations for his short film, “Sharkasaurus.” The film’s plot revolves around a creationist preacher and a scientist/ palaeontologist working in the badlands up against the creature “Sharkasaurus”. Estabrooks said they found some great spots to shoot in Drumheller, and they’re in the process of finalizing locations. “In Drumheller, Three

Fishing in the Badlands According to long time anglers, there is a big difference between ‘fishing’ and ‘catching’. Fishing refers to the attempt to have one of our Piscean friends grab on to your bait; catching is the act of having said fish available for photo opportunities or as the evening entree. The area near Drumheller offers at least four distinct possibilities for those of you looking for great ‘fishing’ opportunities within a one hour drive. Two of those spots are located within Starland County and are operated and maintained by contracted employees. The McLaren Dam Recreational area offers users potable water, communal kitchens and well defined campsites. Located approximately 80 kilometers north and east of Drumheller near the intersection of Secondary Highways 589 and 851, the McLaren Dam’s location is marked by signage leading to it’s exact location at Township Road 33-4 and Range Road 182. Stocked with trout since the mid-1970’s, McLaren Dam has a reputation for

some sizeable trout being taken (up to 16 inches by some reports) and has gained a strong following of local anglers. The second opportunity to catch the elusive ‘Badlands Trout’, is offered at the Michichi Recreational site located within Michichi’s corporate limits. Although the water’s surface area is smaller than the McLaren site, Michichi has benefited from the fish stocking program of the provincial government for well over 25 years. The campground and day use facilities at Michichi are all in great shape and drinking water and washroom facilities are well maintained. Michichi’s smaller size allows for more shore access with a lesser amount of walking required to find your own fishing spot. The recreation area that contains the reservoir is located approximately 20 kilometres from downtown Drumheller, just north of the intersection of Township Road 30-4 and Range Road 19-0. When travelling on Highway 9 north of Drumheller, the intersection of Twp Rd. 30-4 is hard to miss because of the

railroad crossing bearing the title ‘Dinosaur Junction’ just metres east of the highway. Just a few kilometres east on 30-4 and a left turn at Range Rd. 19-0 and Michichi’s trout await. A third lake that produces some big fish is the Crawling Valley Reservoir located south of Drumheller approximately 70 kilometres. To get there, travel east from Drumheller to Rosedale and turn south on Highway 56, just past the Hussar turnoff is an intersection with Secondary Highway 561, head east approximately 18 kilometres and look for the signs. Crawling Valley Reservoir is on the south side of the highway. The lake has a good variety of fish, and fishermen often return to Drumheller boasting of the size of the fish they catch.

Last but not least of the Badlands offerings is the Red Deer River. Drumheller is located in what is referred to as Reach 4 of the Red Deer River’s Integrated Management Plan. In the Plan, Reach 4 is described as “a warm water fishery as indicated by the absence of trout species. All sport fish species are native and include walleye, sauger, pike, goldeye and mooneye.” Avid anglers know the Red Deer River can produce some trophy size fish. There are a number of easily accessible riverbank fishing spots from within the designated town parks and some old timers in the area might point you to some other prime locations. To quote a common bumper sticker, “A bad day of fishing is a lot better than a great day at work.”

The Canadian Badlands Passion Play is extending its theatre season this year. Vance Neudorf, Executive Director, said the play will be running for three weekends this year, which will be nine shows. Neudorf said higher attendance is one of the reasons for adding the extra weekend of shows. “We’ve been growing in audience numbers, but we’ve always been hampered by the fact that there’s only so many days that people can come. Neudorf said adding the third weekend performances has been in the works for a while

now. The play has also tried mid-week shows in the past to stretch the season, with those being mildly successful, he adds. He said another factor is attendance at the Passion Play is spread by word of mouth, and extending the run gives the audience more lead time to talk about the event.

Sooo… Where ya from? Tessa Pinlac, Calgary AB Angel Chan, Hong Kong, China

Who are you? Left to right: Angel Chan and husband Michael, their son Patrick and daughter-in-law Zoe, and Angel’s sister Tessa Pinlac. Where are you from? Tessa: from Calgary, Angel and her family are from Hong Kong. Where did the group arrive from? Tessa: We drove out from Calgary. Everytime my family visits, we make sure to come visit here. We’re impressed with the improvements, noteably the different stores added, over the last couple of years. We enjoy the drive and we love the Hoodoos. What’s on your tour list today? We came from seeing the Hoodoos to the World’s Largest Dinosaur, we’re go-

to

ing to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and we would like to try and stop at Reptile World. We would have gone to the Suspension Bridge, but we’re trying to beat the rain. What is your favourite dinosaur? Angel & Tessa like the World’s Largest Dinosaur and T-Rex, Michael choose the smallest one, Patrick likes the rounder, smaller dinosaurs, Zoe isn’t a dino fan. If we went to Hong Kong, what should we see? Angel recommends Ocean Park (amusement park), says Hong Kong shopping is the best. Tessa recommends trying authentic Chinese food.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Strong summer expected by area attractions On your mark, get set, summer. Drumheller’s busy season is upon the valley and by all indications it looks like it could be a banner year for tourism. This weekend the season was welcomed in by Dinofest and just two weeks later, the Gran Fondo bicycle race will be taking to the blacktop in and around the valley. Last week, Travel Drumheller hosted a meet and greet and mini trade show with local operators and the atmosphere was very optimistic. Chris Curtis of Travel Drumheller said his message of making the Valley a top tourism destination resonated with

the whole room. He also was impressed by the caliber of attractions that have been established in the valley. Judging by the excellent Victoria Day long weekend, indicators are strong for the season. Jenn Balderston of the Atlas Coal Mine said the weekend was record breaking.

QUOTE

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

“There are issues we want to have addressed in the next couple years because of the growth.” Jay Russell

“It was our busiest May Long to date,” she said. Over the weekend they had 1,043 person tours, up 181 tours from

last year. “The Atlas continues to grow each year at an unprecedented rate and we are thrilled visitors are interested it the valley’s mining history and hopefully that interest only grows,” said Balderston. “My word, the long weekend was awesome,” is how Jay Russell of the Atlas Coal Mine summed up the season kick off. “There are issues we want to have addressed in the next couple years because of the growth, I think we are going to have to put them on the front burner,” said Russell. These are issues such as overflow parking and adding more tours on the schedule. “These are excellent

problems to have.” The Tyrrell also opened the season with strong numbers. They had 11,203 visitors over the long weekend. While they were down about 500 compared to last year, Mike Dooley of they Tyrrell explains this could be accounted for by the weather. “If we had a strong Monday, possibly we would have been on par or even above,” said Dooley. He says there is a strong season to look forward to, predicated on the incredible media coverage the valley received last season. This year the Tyrrell will also be in the Calgary Stampede parade. “Last year we had the Amazing Race in Drumheller, and we’ve had

Drumheller was a hub of activity last weekend as many locals and visitors came out for the third annual DinoFest. It appears this should be a strong summer for tourism in the valley.

Canada AM already this year, so there has been a ton of media coverage,” said Dooley. “We have DinoFest again, Tough

Mudder and the Grand Fondo, there are a ton of events packed into this summer.”

Great work often goes by unrecognized. We, the family of Ralph Broom would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all of the continuing care professionals who provided care to Dad over the past 18 months in Drumheller and Hanna. While there is great sadness that this wonderful man is gone, we draw comfort in realizing how many special people enjoyed him and were committed to his well-being. Thanks to Dr. Tlhape who Dad respected and always greeted with a warm handshake. A special thank-you to Norrain for your professional and personal attention to a man we loved so much.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, your ability to focus is very strong, but this week you cannot seem to get your mind to cooperate. You may have a million things to think about. But the prospect of socializing and having a good time is too tempting. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you often feel uncomfortable when you have too many loose ends. It may take quite a while this week to wrap up all of your obligations before you can relax. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, the more you ponder the decisions you have to make, the more you struggle to determine a positive outcome. Give yourself some breathing room. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Career issues must be dealt with, Capricorn. You may have been running through various options, and if you have reached a decision, then go with your gut instincts. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, although everyone around you seems to be stressing out, for some reason you are able to breeze through your days without a worry in the world. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Your intuition is telling you to proceed with caution, Pisces. Watch where you step, but don’t let caution take over your life.

SPORTS Local minor soccer does well in Carbon Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller minor soccer teams played well and had fun in their games in Carbon on the weekend. The minor soccer teams were participating in Carbon Sports Day on Saturday, June 15. U6 Coach Shannon Doel said the team won both of their games. The U8 team, coached by Allan Doel, won one game and lost two games, placing third. Doel said their coach was very happy with

how the team played, and were able to come together and form some great plays. Drumheller’s U10 team won two of their games, lost a game, and tied one game, which finished them in second place. Doel said the team improved their play throughout the day. “All of the players showed lots of skill growth from the beginning of the season,” said Doel. “All of the teams were excited at being able to play other teams. A good time was had by

everyone.” The U6, U8 andU10 teams will be wrapping

up their soccer seasons by the end of June.

DVSS athlete competes at zones Drumheller’s U6, U10 minor soccer teams took part in Carbon Sports Day. Three minor soccer teams from Drumheller participated in the Sports Day Saturday, June 15. submitted

The junior high track team at DVSS sent one athlete this year to Zones in Calgary on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Ryan Skytt ran in the heats for the 100m. He missed advancing to the finals by one spot.
