Dear Editor A local family would like to thank the inconsiderate, rude and thoughtless thief or thieves who felt it was necessary to steal an ill senior's breathing generator and damage his truck, making it undriveable. Just so you know the generator is used as a lifeline for his breathing machine when he is camping with his family, and enjoying his numbered days. Due to limited income it cannot be replaced and a camping trip with his grandchildren planned for the end of the month now has to be cancelled. So you see what you think is a simple crime has affected the lives of many and will not be forgotten. We believe you are a good person who made a bad choice. Beautiful, but what is it? An interesting critter was found in a Drumheller yard recently by Gunnar Mortensen. He saw what he thought were dried leaves stuck together but upon closer inspection, the critter moved, stretched out and displayed its magnificant wings. Wanting to share this discovery, Mortensen brought the photo to inSide Drumheller. The critter is thought to be an eyed hawkmoth, although they usually only display two eyes, the one pictured appears to have four, can anyone help putting a name to this particular moth? Mother Earth comes to Greentree School As part of the Environment Week activities, Mother Earth visited Greentree School on Tuesday, June 1, to present the five Rs to K3 students. Throughout the week the children practised Reduce, Reuse, Recover, Recycle and Responsibility and learned about products and their manufacture, water reduction, litterless lunches and are committed to reducing their carbon footprints. They also completAge: 22. Job: Heritage interpreter. Employer: Atlas Coal Mine. What do you like about your job? Being able to be outside all day, except in this weather! Where do you live? Right now, in Drumheller. Originally from Brighton, Ontario. How long have you lived there? I came last summer and went back to Ontario to finish my tourism and travelling course at college. Then I was asked to come back to work at the Atlas Coal Mine, so here I am, and possibly here to stay! What do you like best about Drumheller? There are so many things I like! Being so different from where I grew up, with its landscape and community. If there were one thing you could change about Drumheller, what would it be? There needs to be a Tim Horton’s, it draws people together. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Anywhere? I have decided when I grow up, whenever that might be, I’ll be living in the Seychelles, because I like sandy beaches and hot weather. What do you do in your spare time? When I am not watching Glee (I am a gleek), I take my dog for walks and find new places to go and discover. I found some old abandoned buildings recently in

the Badlands. Your life’s best achievement? Being the only girl in an entire football league and winning the league MVP! Have you ever taken a life changing decision? Yeah, coming out here to work. Normally, I am very reserved, but as soon as I came out here on my own, it opened lots of possibilities and I became more independent, I’m proud to say. What are your strengths? Being able to get along with anybody, and that’s perfect for work, too. Any weaknesses? Being a gleek! We didn’t have proper TV when I grew up. In Grade 12, we got satellite and that changed the world for me. Three words that best describe you? Outgoing, friendly and fun! What makes you happy? Watching Glee. If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? I’d like to get my whole family to watch Glee with me, they’d love the show. Being able to make a infinite amount of money so I can share it with everyone and getting an unlimited supply of 'chunky monkey' Ben and Jerry ice cream! If you could have one super power what would it be? Having Wonder Woman’s invisible jet so I can go travelling the world.

It’s that “outdoor-food” time of year once again! The time of year we look for easy-to-prepare, but delicious, recipes.

I recently made this dessert at the cabin. As you can see by the photo, it brought smiles to everyone’s faces. This is a quick no-bake treat. I simplified it even more by using ready-made pudding and changed the recipe to Cool Whip, rather than whipped cream. It was a change from chocolate for once, too. Butterscotch Torte 1 pkg. (16oz.) vanilla Oreos, crushed ½ c. melted butter 1 block cream cheese, softened 1 c. icing sugar

1 (12oz.) carton Cool Whip, thawed 2 ½ c. cold milk 2 (3.4oz.) pkg. instant butterscotch pudding mix Set aside 1 c. cookie crumbs. Combine remaining crumbs and butter. Press into greased 9x13 dish. Beat cheese and sugar until smooth. Fold in 1 ½ c. Cool Whip. Spread over crust. Whisk milk and pudding for 2 minutes. Let stand 2 minutes. Spoon over cream cheese layer. Top with remaining Cool Whip. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.

Movie Gallery Canada announced on Friday, June 11 in a press release that it will be closing 131 Movie Gallery and VHQ stores throughout Canada beginning Saturday, June 12 and listed the Drumheller store as one of the closures. Inventory will be liquidated and stores will have a closing sale, managed by a joint venture group consisting of Schottenstein Bernstein Corporation, Tiger Capital Group, and Hudson Capital Partners. The store closing sale is expected to last approximately six weeks. “The at-home video rental market has become increasingly more challenging with the rise of strong competition from cable providers, internet, kiosk operators and subscription-based mail delivery services,” said David Peress, President of Hudson Capital Partners in the press release.

A court date has been set for the former manager of the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country club, charged with commit-

ting fraud. Cameron Foreman made a brief appearance in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, June 11. Defense councillor Hugh Sommerville spoke on behalf of Foreman, although he told the court he has not been re-

Kaleidoscope Theatre to produce one more show before moving back home

The Kaleidoscope Theatre is hoping to produce one more show before moving back to their location: a musical comedy called I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Auditions are expected to take place in September. President Megan McLauchlin said working without their theatre has been challenging but Cabaret, pictured above, worked extremely well in a smaller venue at the Navy League building, giving the show a more intimate feel. inSide file photo

The Kaleidoscope Theatre will have one more production before moving back home to their Drumheller Composite High School location. Details are yet to be ďŹ nalized but president Megan McLauchlin told inSide Drumheller they were hoping to produce the musical comedy, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, in the fall as their ďŹ nal show before going back home. The show will be directed by vice president Colin Regamey. “It has been very hard putting on a play without our theatre,â€? said McLaughlin, explaining all the work this entailed, such as needing to rent space, sound and lighting equipment, building a stage and having limited access for rehearsal. “Putting on a show is quite a big undertaking, and it is double or triple the work when you are not in your location.â€? Although challenging, working without their theatre has also been interesting, said McLauchlin, adding “I don’t know if Cabanet would have been as good in a big theatre, because it would not have been so intimate. At the Navy League building, you felt like you were in a little cabaret club in Germany. Whereas I think if we had done it at the Kaleidoscope, it could have been a whole dierent show and might have had a whole dierent feel.â€? While they are hoping to start auditions for the next show in September, the team has been busy doing casinos to raise mon-

ey to give the theatre a bit of a makeover when they are able to move back to their premises in January 2011. “We are actually revitalizing the theatre’s interior, said McLauchlin. “We will be putting in new seats and repainting. We also have a volunteer designer helping us, it will look like a new space. For the grand re-opening, McLauchlin said they hope to produce a big musical in late spring, early summer 2011.

Tim Hus to release CD at Old Grouch's Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller The Old Grouch's Restaurant has a reputation for down home cooking and down home music. It was not long ago that recording artist Jaydee Bixby as a youngster would turn up and belt out a tune, and now Alberta recording artist Tim Hus will be releasing his most recent CD at the restaurant Friday, June 25. Hus has played in the valley a number of times including at the East Coulee Spring Festival. He is releasing his ďŹ fth album, the second on the famous Stony Plain records, founded by Holger Petersen. “We have been doing CD release concerts all over the province, but I did want to do one in Drumheller,â€? said Hus. While he has never played at The Old Grouch’s before, he met Fran Nargang at previous concerts, and she extended an invitation to him. “I know it is not that big, but I think we could ďŹ ll it up and have a good one there,â€? said Hus. He is proud of his new release Hockeytown, an album packed with Canadian content. “It has all kinds of Canadian cowboy country songs, and the themes go from coast to coast, everything from ďŹ shing o the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, to hunting gophers on the prairies, to steel mills of Ontario, to hunting the Sasquatch in the mountains of British Columbia,â€? said Hus. “I called it Hockeytown because that it has a common thread, every town in Canada is a hockeytown.â€? He said he has the stamp of approval from one of the biggest legends in Canadian music. Last summer he completed a six week tour with the one and only Stompin’ Tom Connors. He wrote much of the material for this album while on tour. “We’re good friends now, and it was great because every night he would stand up on stage and give me really good plugs like, ‘For 30 years I have been looking for a guy that was proud to write songs about our country, and I would sure like to pass the torch

Everyone Welcome Camaro culture Camaros are almost a way of life for Kent and Twyla McLellan - and not just any Camaro, but the first generation 1967-1969 model years. In their quest to own the “Holy Trinity,” one from each model year, they bought and sold a number of cars before they settled on two. They have both a 1967 Camaro coupe and a 1967 RS convertible, in matching blue. The convertible is not just a show car, but a go car. It is powered by a 389 Stroker, built by Drumheller engine aficionado Greg Benson, and boasts about 350 horsepower and 410 ft/lbs of torque - more than enough to cause a driver to go through tires quickly if they don’t behave. Kent says this is one of three known registered currently, with the rare combination of being a bare-bones RS convertible that came with a small block 327.

Newcastle Park: Set on the banks of the Red Deer River, this attractive park has a beach, walking trails, baseball diamonds, camp kitchen and picnic tables.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite

in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Atlas Coal Mine tipple timber assessed by historic preservation experts servation and restoration of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod Hut. They have also done work on Buckingham Palace, and their resume includes a letter of thanks from the Queen!â€? she said. “It takes a particular kind of expertise to do work on our site, we need a high level of contractor who understands historic restoration and who just has to know how to deal with challenges such as working at heights and with limited access. They also need to be sensitive to the fact that this is a museum and therefore there will be people around. And of course they must have the right trade skills. Macdonald and Lawrence had by far the most compelling package.â€? Engineers came to the site to gather intelligence on the timber. Using specialized machinery, they drilled core samples from the timber to make a proďŹ le of its condition, which will help them determine which to replace. The work is expected to start in July for a period of three weeks, during which time the tipple tours will not be available to the public. The team will then return in September to spend the month ďŹ nishing the project.

Expert engineers from the Vancouver-based Macdonald and Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. were onsite at the Atlas Coal Mine in East Coulee recently to assess the timber condition on its tipple. Last year, rot was found around some of the wood joints and this gave Linda Digby, executive director of the Atlas Coal Mine, concern. The aected part is supported by metal scaolding so her concern wasn't for public safety. She explained to The Weekender her concern was focussed on the longevity of the framework as this tipple is the last one in Canada that allows people to climb. “These guys have done historic preservation all over the globe ... and their resume includes a letter of thanks from the Queen!â€? After an engineer's assessment, the museum applied for funding and received help from both the provincial and federal governments. “We are very lucky, we have all the

Discover the Drumheller valley looking for ‘cache’! Pascale Taylor Weekender

A fun way to (re) discover the valley is participating in geocaching. Readers may remember how Earth Day clean-up volunteer Michelle Olson found a geocache by chance while clearing garbage on the river path near Riverside Drive East, as reported in the April 28 edition of The Mail. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game played throughout the world using GPS devices to find locations listed on the geocaching site at www. geocaching.com. Within a 40 kilometre radius of the town of Drumheller, the website lists 57 geocaches, taking players to great places around the area like the ghost town of Dorothy, East Coulee, Horsethief Canyon, the Hoodoos, Orkney viewpoint, Bleriot Ferry, Morrin, Horseshoe Canyon and many more, not to mention all the ones hidden in town and in the Badlands. Those without a GPS can still play, as the website also marks locations on

a map. Finding them without a GPS is possible, it just means people will need to search a bit more for the cache, making the exploring a little more challenging but more rewarding. The idea is to locate containers, called geocaches, hidden outdoors and then log the find and share the experiences online. Geocaches contain various items and a log book for players to leave their comments. Items can be swapped or added. There are also multi-caches, where you need to find several caches before getting to the final one. The game can be played with children and best of all, the website is free to access. To post comments on the forums however, people need to register with a valid email address. There is a premium membership available at a small cost which provides access to additional website features and functionality to get more out of geocaching experiences. Some of the locations around the valley will take players on a bit of a hike too, and judging by some of the

comments on the site, will provide some great views of the valley. “Had a great day caching. Love the history of this land. Thanks for getting us out here. Thanks for the challenge. Great views and great hike. Great hide,” is a comment left from US visitors who geocached in East Coulee. Players can create new caches, and all the information needed to do this can be found on the website. Bear in mind one of the main requirements is

“location, location, location! It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations that are important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. These unique locations on the planet can be quite diverse. A prime camping spot, great viewpoint, unusual location, etc. are all good places to hide a cache.” Interestingly, the cache found by Olson was one that had been missing since 2007.

Local athletes head to Alberta Summer Games Two Drumheller area athletes will be crowding the plate at the Alberta Summer Games. Cersten Peters and Bailey Faubion were both selected to represent Zone 2 in Softball at the Alberta Summer Games in the Peace region from July 19 to 26. On those dates, more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officiating staff will be descending on the region for the competition. This year the games will be staged in two shifts. Softball will be in the second shift from July 22 to July 26. The two Drumheller players are both pitchers, and both know how to swing a bat. They were selected from about 40 players who

tried out in the area. Zone 2 stretches from the B.C. border to the Saskatchewan border, and surrounds Calgary, which has a zone of its own. To the south, it dips to High River, and communities in the northern reaches include Olds and Trochu. Cersten, daughter of Doug and Tamala Peters, has been playing since she was in Grade 5. Currently she plays on a bantam team called Pure Venom out of Drumheller, coached by Brent Sands. Last year she played for the Road Runner, which made it to provincials. She chalks up much of her success on the pitching mound to long nights in the park behind her home with her father working on her skills. Bailey, daughter of Jim

What’s the deal with Israel? Ever since the Jews were given a country they could call home, every other country in that part of the world has at one time or another tried to burn them, bomb them out, or vowed to push them into the sea. They would not be crushed so easily, no matter the forces aligned against them. After thousands of years they had a home, and small as it was, as busy a piece of land that it was, it was theirs, and no one would put them out of it. In the past Israel has tried to get along with its neighbours. It wants nothing more than to survive peacefully as a nation, and as any other nation, will do whatever it takes to ensure its survival. In its wars, initiated by its neighbours, it fought and won, taking and occupying territory taken in the fighting. In its quest for peace with the other nations, it has grudgingly returned those lands. It returned the Sinai to Egypt in 1982 and offered 98 percent of the West Bank to Yasser Arafat (he refused the deal). The deal with Egypt worked, as both parties upheld their ends of the bargain. Apparently Egypt has more to think about than destruction of Israel and the elimination of the Jews who live there. Not so Hamas, the political/militial organization that governs Gaza. Their prime objective is to drive the Israelis into the sea, and take back what might once have been theirs. The Israelis have taken themselves out of Gaza and given it back to the Palestinians in an effort to secure some peace and quiet. What they got instead, they rocket and mortar attacks. Israel had built actual settlements in Gaza, but after they were removed, a well was erected to keep out suicide bombers. The wall is still in place, but since Hamas became the elected government of Gaza in 2007, more than 2000 rockets and mortars have been fired into Israel. Israel set up a blockade, allowing no skipping into or out of Gaza. So what happens when a ship tries to come into Gaza, a ship supposedly carrying “relief supplies”? The Israel army boards it, and the troops are set upon by “peace activists”, who attack with clubs and knives. Israel is trying to enforce its embargo against Gaza, and unfortunately embargoes sometimes have unintended consequences, and collateral damage. What’s a country to do? You’ve got a neighbour country ruled by a bunch of terrorist maniacs (Hamas), whose sole aim is your destruction through any means possible. A country that seems to care for little else but waging war. Can you imagine if these guys had a real army, with tanks and artillery, and an air force? Fortunately they don’t, and an embargo is one of the reasons why they don’t. They do however seem to have a plentiful supply of rocket and mortars. In the meantime, the populace has less food and trade goods, and the economy remains stagnant. It always amazes me to see news reels of the most deprived places in the world, where people are starving, yet they always seem to have enough weaponry, as even some of the bids tote AK47 assault riffles. Why is it, that of all the Mid Eastern countries, Israel, founded in 1949, 60 short years ago, is a prosperous, ordered democracy, whose citizens enjoy a standard of living its neighbour nations can only envy? And all that time remaining in a state of readiness to ward off any military advances by those neighbours. Maybe it’s because they are willing to live and let live, where the others can do nothing else but plot and scheme, wasting money on weapons, and wasting time fermenting hate. They will never be anything more than what they are, a small people, a hateful people, a silly people. 24m

and Kari-Ann Faubion, has been playing since she was seven years old and started out in minor baseball. Last summer she was selected to play for a team to vie for a spot to represent Canada in the Little League World Series. She too is balancing her schedule playing for Pure Venom and now the Alberta Games team. It may get even busier for her, as she is again planning to try out for a chance to represent Canada at the Little League World Series. The games are hosted in the Peace Region by 10 partnering communities. There will be competition in 15 different sports. More than 200 volunteers are needed to make the games run smoothly.

My club was not overly fond of either of the two books we chose this time. Our first one, for May, was Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger. An historical fiction, this novel tells the story of an English woman Lori Stefanishion and her devoted maid and servant. They travel to live in Egypt for inSide Drumheller the sake of the Lady’s health, leaving behind all family. The story Book Columnist takes quite a turn halfway through and once again near the end. Jealousy and hatred became apparent, as did love and devotion. The descriptions of 19th century Egypt were interesting as they traveled the Nile and lived in the cities of Luxor, Cairo and Alexandria. We agreed that the book dragged at first, but did pick up the pace later on. We were especially taken aback at how a person can turn to become so utterly cruel and uncaring. Our June book was The Piano Teacher by Janice Y.K. Lee. The book shows the clash of cultures amongst Hong Kong society with English businessmen, the local businessmen and then the everyday Chinese. The main character doesn’t fit in with the elite classes of either the Chinese or the English due to her mixed heritage. Two lives alternate with stories during a time span from the Japanese Invasion of Hong Kong in the 1940’s, and the main character’s during the 1950’s. I enjoyed the historical events, many of which were unknown to me. Some of my book club members found the characters distasteful, but I was intrigued by them all. As with the first book, many emotions are examined including betrayal and love. We now look forward to searching out some new books over the summer to recommend (or not!) when our book club meets again in Steptember. 24m

The Drumheller U12 girls soccer team concluded their season with a bronze medal finish in their league playoffs. The team, coached by Jay Garbutt, travelled to Linden to play in the final tournament on Saturday, June 12. “I am really proud of the girls, they overcame some real disadvantages this year.” said Garbut of the team short on numbers, but big at heart. They started the tournament playing in the quarterfinal versus the undefeated Carstairs team. Thanks to the strong defensive play of Samantha Ptashnik, Brooklyn Davies and Nicole Garbutt, coupled with the outstanding goaltending of Katelyn Lequire, the score was tied at nil at the end of regulation time. It came down to a shootout and Lequire stood tall, blanking Carstairs on every attempt. Davies snuck the

winner past the Carstairs goalkeeper to claim the 1-0 win. This put the team up against Acme in the semifinal. Brianna Catonio and Terica Bosch fought their way through the tough Acme defenders for some good opportunities, but were unable to score. With five minutes left on the clock, Acme broke Lequire’s shut out and claimed the win. Acme went onto play Olds in the gold medal match, and Drumheller was awarded bronze. Garbutt’s pride in the team stems from how strong they played all season with very light bench to draw from. “We have a very young team and played the whole season with either one or no substitutions, yet our opposition was always able to put fresh legs on the field every five minutes,” said Garbutt. “Our girls played their hearts out and their efforts were rewarded.”
