While residents have endured a few delays during construction season, Border Paving has made great progress on the Highway 10 resurfacing project this spring. The project goes from East Coulee right to the intersection of Highway 9 and 10. There are also improvements to be made at the intersection near Winks and then on Highway 9 and 3rd Avenue in downtown Drumheller this summer. Another project planned this season is micro- resurfacing of Highway 838 (North Dinosaur Trail) from Highway 9, 4 kilometres west towards the Royal Tyrrell Museum. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Skateboard enthusiasts in Drumheller are going to have to wait a little bit longer for their very own space. Late last year, the Drumheller Association of Skateboard Enthusiasts (DASE) and the Town of Drumheller had joined forces to secure grant funding to build a new skate park and outdoor theatre space next to the Rotary Spray Park. Since then, the two were informed the Legacy Park project did not receive grant funding. However, the enthusiasm to build a park remains. “We’ve resubmitted for a number of grants last week. Depending on how those work out, there could be additional funding in place,” said Paul Salvatore, Director of Community Services for the Town of Drumheller and committee member of DASE. “We’ve slowed down a little because of some negative responses

on our grant applications, but we’re still really enthusiastic about this project.” Despite the lack of grant funding for the moment, some initial steps are being taken to build a skate park, though likely on a smaller scale. It is hoped construction will commence in the fall. “Realistically, we are looking at the time frame for construction being delayed. There is some work being done on the site. ATCO is removing some of its electrical structures that are at the Spray Park in anticipation of that being the future location of the skateboard park,” said Salvatore. “It may go forward in a reduced fashion, compared to what was originally proposed, but it can be a pretty remarkable amenity for people in Drumheller and those visiting us.” DASE has also contacted New Line Skateparks to design the park. “The committee has been looking at ways to

move forward,” said Salvatore. “Generally speaking, there has been a lot of talk about the project, now, we want to say ‘this

RCMP arrest suspect in armed robbery Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller RCMP have a 25 year-old-man in custody and charges are pending in relation to an armed robbery in downtown Drumheller Wednesday night. At about 9:30 p.m. on June 19, Drumheller RCMP responded to a complaint of an armed robbery at the Drumheller Liquor Store on North Railway Avenue. Several RCMP members attended the scene where they learned the suspect entered premises and produced what appeared to be a small gun and demanded cash

from the liquor store employee. The clerk complied and opened the till. The suspect grabbed some money and exited the store, heading west. During the investigation, RCMP reviewed the store video, which gave police a good description of the suspect and his clothing. About an hour later, a 25-year-old matching the description of the suspect was located and arrested. Charges of using a firearm during the commission of a robbery are pending. The suspect has been in the Drumheller area for about 10 months.

Canada Day celebrates Drumheller’s centennial Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller is getting ready to go all out for the Canada Day celebrations this year, which will also pay tribute to Drumheller’s centennial. “We’re working with the group that organizes the Canada Day celebrations. We’re making sure we recognize the centennial on Canada Day,” said Sharel Shoff, chair of the Drumheller Centennial Committee. Among the centennial activities planned, there will be a centennial barbecue, reenactment of Drumheller’s famous coin toss, and more. “This Canada Day will not only recognize our Canadian heritage, we’ll be recognizing Drumheller’s centennial. We’re having a reader’s corner, where we’re hoping we’ll

capture some of the history of Drumheller,” said Cathy Smoliak, FCSS coordinator for the Town of Drumheller and organizer of the Canada Day festivities. The celebrations begin with the annual Canada Day parade. So far, close to 100 floats are expected. Residents are being asked to help make the parade as smooth as possible. “Because of the town’s centennial, we’re expecting a lot of floats this year. We want to make sure people are aware of where the parade traffic starts and ends. There will be barricades up. We’re asking people to please respect the barricades and to not drive through them to give the people volunteering room to work,” said Roxanne Clark, office and membership coordina-

tor with the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce, who organizes the parade each year. Floats will be gathering in Riverside prior to the parade from 10 Street East to 17 Street East. Motorists are asked to avoid that area and use 18 Street East to enter or exit Riverside during the morning of the parade. Motorists are also being asked to not go through traffic barricades. Parents are being asked to keep their children off the streets during the parade and for floats to hand out candy, as opposed to throwing candy from their float. Anyone wishing to enter horses into the parade must provide a copy of their liability insurance to the Drumheller Chamber no later than June 26. Any equestrians

who do not register by then will not be allowed in the parade. Following the parade, the celebration will continue at the Rotary Splash Park. From noon on, the park will be filled with inflatable rides, live entertainment, and more. At 6 p.m., organizers will take a moment to recognize Canada Day and Drumheller’s centennial, sing O’ Canada, and cut the cake. In the evening the

Travelling Mabels, Fire Coulee Bandits, and Sweet Tequila will be on stage. Then, at 11 p.m., the

annual Canada Day fireworks will light up the night sky, bringing the celebration to a close.

The Drumheller Health Centre is joining forces with local artists to help brighten the experience of patients, visitors and staff. On Friday, June 14, the Drumheller Health Centre, with support

leader of the Drumheller Health Centre. “We wanted to put them in a place everyone could enjoy. It really gives the facility more of a community feeling.” The first two pieces on display were created by local students from St. Anthony’s School. “It’s especially great

to see student artwork here. They made beautiful art and it shows how talented students in the area are. I look forward to more,” said Guntrip. The first piece was created by Eric Guiling. It shows two silhouettes in the foreground. One is sitting, while the other is offering a helping hand. “There are always disasters that destroy everything .people have. But, there is always a person there to help them back up to their feet,” said Guiling, describing the inspiration for his piece. The second piece is a joint effort from Sara Armstrong, Stephanie Hirsch, Tatijana Baker, and Rachell Simoneau. Each student created a quarter of the work and then joined them together. The Drumheller Health Centre will be keeping the student’s work on display for the near future, but is welcoming other artists to submit their work to be displayed in the future.

Tyrrell oďŹƒcially opens Palaeo Playground Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Residents and tourists are invited to celebrate the grand opening of one of the most popular outdoor features of the Royal Tyrrell Museum. On Friday, June 21, the Museum will hold the oďŹƒcial grand opening of the Cenovus Palaeo Playground. “The playground has been open for quite a few

years, but over the last couple, we’ve been able to refresh it courtesy of Cenovus said Lisa Making, Director of Exhibits and Communication at the Tyrrell Museum. With $100,000 from Cenovus, the Tyrrell Museum was able to provide more seating, shade, and more for kids. “Through their help, we were able to get the T. rex in. The T. rex dig site made an appearance at the Calgary Zoo

during their Dinosaurs Alive exhibit. After that, we brought it back to the Museum and included it as part of the playground. “We added some interpretation, so kids can understand what they are doing when they excavate the T. rex,â€? said Making. The opening will feature face painters, balloon artists, free ice cream, and more. “This exciting project oers enhanced educa-

tional opportunities for children and youth. We strive to be innovative in all that we do at Cenovus, including the way we support the communities where we live and work, said Leanne Courchesne, group lead of Community Investment with Cenovus Energy. “We hope the Cenovus Palaeo Playground will be a fun, interactive attraction for many years to come.

24-Hour Jam for STARS total rising Just like wine, the 24Hour Jam at The Old Grouch’s keeps getting better with age, although they may run out of stunts for Garry to raise funds with. This year they have raised $13,000 for STARS air ambulance, and counting. This does not include $5,000

from the Town of Drumheller, the second installment of a threeyear commitment. The 24-Hour Jam is a springtime tradition in Drumheller where local musicians, and some from afar, come out to share their musical skills and rock all night and day. Markus and Ellen Kleiber, Stefan Rapp, and Franziska Wallot

What brings you to Drumheller? Ellen: My aunt and uncle live in Winnipeg, so we decided to visit the west of Canada. My uncle said it was a really nice place to see dinosaurs and the land-

scape is beautiful. Any favourite dinosaurs? Markus: The T. rex. is really impressive. What have you been able to see in Drumheller? Ellen: Just the Museum so far.

What do you like most about Drumheller so far? Stefan: The drive here was impressive. It was really fascinating to go from even plains to going straight down and seeing the landscape

change so drastically. If someone from Drumheller were to go to Stuttgart, what would they have to see? Markus: Our dinosaur museum, which is very close to where we live. Stefan: The MercedesBenz Museum, which shows the evolution of the automobile. Stuttgart is the headquarters and origin of Mercedes. It’s like how the American brands were in Detroit, it’s the same with Stuttgart and Mercedes and Porsche. Would you come back? Stefan: Yes, definitely. We were really impressed with the size of the Museum and its exhibitions.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

and you could WIN a pair of tickets to this year's Canadian Badlands Passion Play!

The Weekender

The Alberta badlands are famous the world over for their abundance of fossils. From the miniscule fish, amphibians, and reptiles to the colossal dinosaurs. Charged with unearthing these creatures are palaeontologists. However, many amateur fossil hunters have found some of the most amazing finds. For example, Black Beauty, the enormous Tyrannosaurus rex at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, was found by two young boys. Here is some advice to help you hunt for Alberta’s prehistoric treasures. First and foremost is to know what age and type of rock you are looking in. In the badlands the rocks are from the late Cretaceous. Also, fossils are found generally in sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone. “You want to look in sedimentary rocks. The sandstones are usually the best,” said Dr. Don Henderson, curator of dinosaurs at the Tyrrell Museum. Once you’ve found a suitable area, pack plenty of water, good shoes, camera, and if possible a GPS. Also, if it has rained within the past 12 hours, it is generally not safe to hike, due to the extremely slippery bentonite that covers the area. From there, it helps to know what kinds of animals can be found in the area and to form a mental picture of what you’re looking for. Also, remain focused. “Don’t let your mind wander. If you’re walking around and not paying attention, you’re going to miss stuff. You really have to think about what you’re looking at on the ground,” suggested Henderson.

Drumheller has 2 new dinosaurs who remain nameless. Here's your chance to help them out.

This bit of rock and bones may not look like much and could easily be missed, but underneath was a nearly complete Gorgosaurus skull (inset). Should you find a fossil poking out of the badlands, inform the Royal Tyrrell Museum, and they can send professionals out to collect it.

If you find a bone, there are a few ways to determine if it is indeed a fossil. Fossils here are generally reddish brown in colour and are heavier due to being essentially turned to stone. Bones that are white and light will most likely be from a modern animal, such as a deer. Once you find a fossil do not remove it from the ground. The temptation may be great, but it is best left to the professionals. Take a photo of the fossil with something for scale, take photos of the surroundings, mark the location on a map or GPS, and inform the Tyrrell Museum. “If something looks significant, take a photo with something for scale next to it. Plus, there could be bits around what you’re looking at and even though fossils are heavy, they are extremely brittle. Think of them as being made from glass. If you drop them, they’re done. If you put even a little stress on them, they snap. They really are fragile,” said Henderson. Excavating fossils anywhere in Alberta is illegal under the Alberta Historical Resources Act. The public is allowed to surface collect, meaning a fossil that is resting on the ground. A scientific permit is needed to excavate. Under the act, those caught excavating could face up to $50,000 in fines and/or one year in jail. “The whole point of having the requirements, you need special training and expertise to safely remove a fossil from the ground. Our hope is significant fossils get preserved and collected professionally, so they’re available for display and scientific research,” said Dan Spivak, who is responsible for resource management with the Tyrrell Museum. Also, collecting fossils on private land is prohibited without the landowners permission. Collecting fossils in provincial or national parks, such as Midland Provincial Park (which is around the Tyrrell Museum) or Dinosaur Provincial Park, is strictly forbidden. While it may be disappointing that the public cannot excavate fossils, the goal of the act and palaeontologists is to preserve these amazing creatures as long as possible. Plus, even if you only find the fossil, if it’s something new, it might be named after you. If you find a fossil, visit www.tyrrellmuseum.com/contact_us or call 403823-7707.

inSide Ride sees many nice cars every summer, but it is even more fun when there is a little local and family history involved. Darrell Berlando’s 1954 Studebaker Commander has a bit of history. This was a mid-level Studebaker, which had a V8 and a three-speed automatic with overdrive. One of the modern technological advancements of the day included a “Hill Holder,” which prevented the car from rolling backwards on a hill. The car was purchased by Berlando’s grandfather on his mother’s side, Henry Looten. He bought it brand new from Dan McLean. This might

have been the first car that Berlando drove after he had his learner’s permit, and was the car that his grandfather took his mother to the church to be married. His older brother inherited the car in 1970 and in 1991, it was sold to Hank Rasmussen. When Rasmussen passed away, Berlando was able to bring the car back into the family fold in 2010. It is all-original except for a paint job from when Rasmussen owned it. The first thing that Darrell did when he took possession of the car was take his mom for a ride.

Saints place 39th out of 62 teams

Rage split double header Karis Hilchey slams the ball during the Drumheller Rage’s double header against YMFL Calgary Bantam boys team at Newcastle ball diamonds on Saturday, June 8. The Rage split the double header, winning the first game 10-6 and losing the second by a narrow 10-9. The games were the only chance for the Rage to play at home and the stands were packed with family, friends, and fans. The games gave the Rage a chance to face some tougher competition. On June 10, 12 and 17, the team followed up with three huge wins of 20-9, 15-8 and 14-5 in league play. The Rage will finish up league play soon and head to playoffs on June 24. They are currently in first place with 8 wins and 1 loss. They head to provincials on June 29.

QUOTE

The St. Anthony’s junior high track and field team excelled at their zone competition. The team competed at a meet in Calgary on June 5 at Foothill Stadium. The team has nine athletes who competed in running, throwing and jumping events. “They worked really hard and posted many personal bests,” said coach Gavin Makse. He adds this is in light of the team being limited in where it can train, and also given the fact the athletes competed in no track meets before zones. One standout at the competition was Kayla Finkbiner who placed fourth in the Grade 7800m and third in the 1,500m. She also competed in the high jump. Megan Boland competed in the Grade 7- 100m and 400m, long jump and triple jump. Carmana Olbrich competed in the Grade 7- 800m. Payton Zacharuk also had a good meet placing eighth in the Grade 7- shot put and 15th in discus.

Rory is the type of player I felt we lacked last season,” said Brian Curran, general manager and head coach of the Dragons. “Brody is a very mobile Defensemen with very strong skills, has great character, skates very well, and moves the puck well.” Davidson played last season for the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs. In 34 games, he scored 12 goals and 11 assists, and had 10 penalty minutes. During the Chiefs playoff drive he earned a further 8 goals, 2 assists, and 4 penalty minutes. The Chiefs finished the season as league champions for the second year in a row and won the Telus Cup. “I chose to come to the Dragons because I believe they have a solid program and the potential to become a championship team. I’m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks I’ll write about my training and what I’ve learned. My favourite part of the whole race was during the run when people crossed paths and would high-five. It’s the little things like that which keeps you going and having fun. work, skill, and because I understand how much dedication and effort it takes to win,” said Davidson. Valette joins the Dragons after playing for the UFA Bisons last season. In 34 games, Valette earned 1 goal, 11 assists, and 2 penalty minutes. “I am very excited to join the Dragons for the upcoming season. Over the last year or more the Dragons kept in touch with me and made me feel like I wanted to be a Dragon. Brian Curran is a coach who I had a chance to play for last year as an affiliate and I really enjoyed his approach along with his understanding and development of players. I feel with Brian’s leadership and experience, it will give both myself and the Dragons a great opportunity to be successful,” said Valette. The Dragons will return to the ice for training camp in August.

compete, but I think next year I’m going to have to go the distance and do the whole triathlon. Now that the triathlon is over, it’s time to step up my training. Before, I was doing 5 kilometre short runs during the week and a 12 kilometre long run on the weekend. Now, I’m increasing those distances to, eventually, 10 kilometre short runs and a 15 to 20 kilometre long run on the weekend. I’m not remotely close to being able to run the full distances, but hopeful I’ll be ready by the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon in September.
