Happy Canada Day! Schedule of events see page 6

Grade 1 students at Greentree School were elated to see the last day of school arrive, and not just because it’s the beginning of summer, but because of the day’s activities they had lined up. This includes trips to the swimming pool, the Rotary Spray Park and even the Napier Theatre to see How to Train Your Dragon 2. Hopefully they cleaned out their desks along the way. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

All letters are welcome and we encourage you to share your views with our readers. Beyond those changes, letters will appear as submitted.

Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor; As long term downtown merchants, we felt we should communicate our feelings on the proposed Downtown Pedestrian Mall. We are in favour of the project. When we picture it, we see a relaxed environment where there are people sitting or strolling around, enjoying the live entertainment. There would be natural plants in pots, local growers and artisans selling fresh produce and handcrafts in Kiosks. This would be an entertaining diver-

sion for the thousands of tourists who visit the valley, but more importantly, it would be a place for locals to just go and enjoy some outdoor time with live entertainment. Do we hope people will shop? Well, of course we do, but they might not. This is where the risk comes in, (for ourselves and other merchants). However, we do need to do something to encourage locals and tourists to spend more time downtown. Locals sometimes complain there is not enough to do around Drumheller right? Well this can be an opportunity for everyone. How about outdoor crib tournaments? Believe me, I know change can be scary, but it can be exciting as well. Ok, let’s talk about the negatives. Parking. The fact is there are public

parking lots downtown that are under-utilized. One behind my store, one behind Bill Cross, ½ of the lot closest to Shoppers Drug Mart belongs to that store and the other ½ is public parking, and there is a huge lot between the Brick parking lot and the Community Futures to name a few. Then some say “If they can’t park right in front of my building, they will just drive away.” What! Why? If you go to any urban center, you are going to have to walk an absolute minimum of ½ a block to reach your destination. We encourage everyone to keep an open mind. Remember, this is a six week trial. Possibly only a month. When change is involved it can make people passionate to keep things the same. But we need a change.

This could be one that would be exciting and an opening to new ideas and opportunities for the entire community. Are we dreaming? Possibly, but dreams can become reality. I welcome all comments and ideas regarding this plan, you can email me at merlenormandrum@gmail.com Sincerely, Marilyn Faryna and Tara McMillan

on the fill station construction to ensure it is visually appealing. Let’s keep in mind that a wasp nest is visually attractive as well -- truly a marvel of nature’s engineering capabilities. However, when reality sinks in, it’s not the visual appeal that matters most -- it’s the activity it’s designed to generate that is troublesome. Other than that, either structure appears perfectly acceptable. Yours truly, Linda Gerlinger

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Angel’s Corner unveiled After 2 years of planning, fundraising, dreaming and hard work, The Big Country Anti Violence Association’s (BCAVA) Angel’s Corner was realized. The garden with seating to serve a quiet place of reflection in dedication of victims of violence was unveiled Wednesday afternoon. A Colour Guard from the Drumheller Institution and the RCMP in Red Serge attended, as did representation from the Town of Drumheller and other groups and organizations that contributed to the project. “It is just such a wonderful experience, there was a small group that made it happen and pulled it all together and it brought everybody very close,” said BCAVA president Cindy Stemaschuk. “It is place where people can go to sit and re-

flect. They can be victims of violence or perhaps perpetrators of violence and just need a quiet spot to sit and think, maybe heal. It also lets the community know Drumheller’s a community that does not like domestic violence and we support our victims.”

(l-r): Carl Cavello, Jim Brohman, Lori Brohman-all from Edmonton, Bruce Suffield-from near Elk Island Nat’l Park, Nigel Jackman-Edmonton, and Al Spady-from near Elk Island Nat’l Park. What brings you to Drumheller? We’re here on a cycling trip to see the countryside and meet local people. Friday we cycled 40 kilometers, Saturday an 85 kilometer trip, and today we cycled 55 kilometers. What was on your tour list? Friday’s cycling included Horseshoe Canyon to Rosebud, Saturday’s trip the primary goal was to get to the Saloon

to

in Wayne. One beer per 50k cycled, but we don’t drink on the road-Carl. All the bridges, the wooden decks, are beautiful - Lori. Didn’t tour the Atlas Coal Mine, but stopped and read all the information. We also stopped in Dalum, and learned about the Church, just as a wedding was wrapping up. If we visited the Edmonton area, what would you recommend we see? The Ukrainian village near Elk Island, visiting Elk Island, and visiting the river valley in Edmonton-it’s a treasure, with spring & summer festivals, and an outdoor patio café.

Throughout summertime, The Weekender will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers. k20c36h

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

are WHO you?

HAPPENINGS

Shelley MORGAN Birthdate: June 21. How long have you lived here? Since 1981, from Calgary. We wanted to raise our three boys in a small town. Currrent Occupation: My husband and I own Valley Auto Recyclers and Newcastle Towing (managed by our oldest son, Chris). How did you decide on that? Lloyd & Chris have always been interested in cars. What do you enjoy most about doing that? Any of the outside work - hard, physical labour is good for me. Keeps me limber in my old age (laughs). How long can you see yourself doing that? As long as we’re physically able. We’ll putter and drive Chris crazy. What do you like to do in your free time? If we can get a four day weekend, head out on the Harley. And I enjoy spending time with my

four grandkids who are here in town (ages almost 2, 5, 12, and almost 15). Where’s your favourite spot to travel to on the bikes? Anywhere that’s not raining! I hate to get wet and cold, but Lloyd rides in any weather. If you could take a trip somewhere, where would you go? The Maritimes in the fall, Cabot Trail especially. Do you use social media? Only when I have to. What’s your favourite thing about using your iPhone? Probably the camera photos of the grandkids and photos of parts at work to send quickly to people. Favourite saying? Whoosh, let it go. (like the email whoosh sound.) Favourite thing about Canada Day here? Going to the July 1st parade with my grandkids. Final thoughts? Happy Canada Day.

To nominate the next Who are you? Please give us a call at 403-823-2580, fax at 403-823-3864 or email news@insidedrumheller.com

This weekend hundreds of cyclist from all over Alberta and beyond will be descending on Drumheller for Gran Fondo Badlands. Last year’s Tour of Alberta stop in Drumheller made an impression on Gran Fondo organizers and they sought out the valley for this cycling event to go June 28. “I have some friends who have been coming out here to ride for several years,” said organizer Rick Skeith “We have done one in Nanton for several years and rid-

just doing the ferry loop, about 50 kilometres and then various distances between 50 and 162.” He says they are not closing roads for the race. He has checked out the traffic and has found it is really not too busy when the event commences, and it doesn’t take long for the riders to split into packs. The course closes at 4:30 p.m. “The cyclists know that the roads are not closed, but be patient with them,” he says to residents who may be on the road during the event. While the riders head out at 8 a.m. on Saturday, there is an opening dinner on Friday night at the Cretaceous Conference Centre. Following the race there will be food from Fresh Kitchen Catering and drinks are available for purchase. Funds raised from the event go to the Boys and Girls Club being formed in Drumheller.

Goat Cheese-Stuffed Apricot appetizer As everyone knows, appy’s are my favorite! To eat, to serve, to create… This is an impressive, tasty appy that is very easy to make. It has proved to be a favorite amongst my guests this past winter and spring. Since making it, I have found similar recipes using dried apricots. That cuts down the preparation time, making this even simpler than it was! I am sure there is no loss in taste either. The dried apricots would make it easier to prepare ahead of time, as well. This is my first version: 1 can of apricots *if fresh apricots are in season, all the better! 1 Tbsp butter, melted 1 log of goat cheese 2 Tbsp honey, divided 2 Tbsp Fresh mint, chopped 3-4 pine nuts per apricot (approx. 2 Tbsp) * if you toast them, the flavor is better.

Mix the goat cheese with 1 Tbsp honey. Brush the cut half of apricot with the butter and grill or fry in a frying pan, just for a minute or two, to brown. Fill with the goat cheese mixture. Top with a drizzle of honey, mint and pine nuts. I have since seen these on various sites using the dried apricots and topping the goat cheese with either an almond, a pecan or pistachios. I have also seen basil substituted for the mint. There are many possibilities, but each one looks as yummy as the next! It’s a great flavor combination – goat cheese, apricot and nuts. Serve a plate of these to guests for a snack or serve as an appetizer while they await your 1st of July barbecue. Happy Canada Day!

SPORTS Drumheller football players excel on Airdrie squad

It’s time to protect property rights again.

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Four Drumheller football players had a strong season playing football in Airdrie and some were honoured for their hard work and dedication. Tracker Robinson, Rhett Duggan, Aden Enns and Eric Seiller played this season for the Airdrie Northern Raiders in the Calgary Midget Football League. The team continued to progress all season and pushed their way to the league championship, but were bested by only four points by the Mavericks. The team held itS awards banquet on June 16 and Tracker Robinson came home with the Defensive Lineman of the Year Award, Rhett Duggan

Recent legislation has disrupted the crucial balance that has protected the fundamental property rights of Alberta’s farmers and ranchers. 14064CP0 For the good of private property owners, for the good of our industries and for the good of all Albertans, this balance must be restored.

Skills camp closes out U10 softball season Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Girls Softball Association hosted a skills camp in town Saturday, June 21. The skills camp, for players ages 8 to 13, was a wrap up to the season for the local Comets and Renegades, the two girls U10 teams. Instructors for the south division development camp came out of Calgary, and while most participants were from Drumheller, some came from Lacombe, Stettler and Foremost to attend. Kelsey Calon, coach of the Comets, and Renegades coach Barb Heptonstall, are proud of the hard work and skills the girls have developed over this season. Calon said the focus this year for the players was getting down the basics of hitting, catching and throwing, and developing the team’s pitching. The Comets team of ten had four veteran players, four

rookies, and two second year players. Brad Wright assisted the Calons with coaching duty this year. Barb and Dale Heptonstall have been coaching some of the Renegades players for four years now, some for three, and also have a few brand new players on the team. Dale Telford also worked with the Renegades on and off the field. The coaches of both teams appreciate the tremendous support of all the parents and volunteers, who helped out the teams in every way, from cheering to umpire to helping out at practice and during games. All that work helped make a fulfilling season for the young ball players, and their coaches. “As coaches, it is hugely rewarding to see them put all of the skills together and encourage each other through each practice and every game,” said Heptonstall.
