wait a little longer to see the breakneck excitement of IMCA racing, as this weekend is a washout. The Raptor Run, featuring the IMCA Stock cars and trucks and Modified cars were slated to go Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1 at Dinosaur Downs. However, Tuesday night’s downpour effectively sunk any hopes of racing this weekend. “It is postponed,” said Drumheller Stampede an Ag Society president Mike Hansen. “We don’t have a make up date yet.” Parts of the track were literally underwater following the rainstorm and Hansen said they would not be able to dry out the track in time for the races. It could be tough to find

a new date to make up the Raptor Run. The IMCA’s 2012 schedule is chock full and has races scheduled into mid September. This doesn’t mean there won’t be races in Drumheller this summer. Tentative IMCA race dates in Drumheller are on August 18 and 19 and September 8 and 9.

Johnathon Day “We’re celebrating being in Canada. That’s the best part.”

The Town of Drumheller is in communication with operators at the Dickson Dam and at this point, while the river is higher than residents normally see it, there is no risk of flooding. Drumheller’s director of Disaster Services Ray Romanetz and deputy director of Disaster Services Bill Bachynski confirmed that the Dickson Dam is releasing at 160 cubic metres per second and has no plans of increasing flows as the majority of snow pack has melted and is not expected to cause any problems. “The snow pack is gone and the dam is not full, so we are in good shape here,” said Bachynski. The dam is presently 78 per cent full and the current flow at Drumheller is 265 cubic metres per second. “Rains received over the last several days has not resulted in any concerns regarding flows on the Red Deer River,” said a press release. “If the situation changes as a result of significant rainfall, River Forecasting will advise the Town accordingly.”

Age: 21 Employment: I’m a contractor for Rhino Enterprises, which is a third party contractor to Encana Corporation. What do you like most about your job? The different challenges I face each day, the obstacles to overcome are always different and it keeps it interesting, that’s for sure. Are you originally from Drumheller? No. I was actually born in Brandon, Manitoba. I have lived in Drumheller now for 16 years with my family. We moved here for my dad’s work, and my parents wanted a change of scenery. What would you say you like most about Drumheller? I work up top of the valley where the land is more prairie-like. Down here the landscape is so beautiful, there’s so many aspects to it and it’s just so different than anywhere else. What’s something most people wouldn’t know about you? Well because I drive around all day and get feeling cooped up in the truck, when I get home I go for a walk with my girlfriend each night. It gives us a chance to catch up on our day and gives me a chance to get out of the house. What would be your dream car and why? Definitely a McLaren F1. They’re fast and in my opinion, look pretty cool. They’re something different and you don’t see them everyday. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Steak. I love steak. I could eat medium rare steak everyday and be just fine with that. What would you say is one of your guilty pleasures? I like to watch Storage Wars, Duck Dynasty or Swamp People each evening. That’s what I would say is my guilty pleasure. What is the craziest thing you would do for $1 million? I would full out swim with Great White Sharks, no cage or anything. What is your biggest fear? I’d never want to lose my sight. I wouldn’t be able to do the job I do and I like to see my world around me.

Quilting show returns after two year hiatus Michael James The Weekender

Some of the area’s most talented artists will be showing off their work in just over a week. Downtown will be filled with colour and will look really comfy as a plethora of quilts adorn Centre Street on Saturday, July 7, in the third bi-annual Quilting in the Badlands Outdoor Quilt Show. Quilters from the Drumheller area, and few from further afield, have been labouring over their art for two years. “It’s to display the artwork of the local quilters in and around Drumheller. It’s a day of fun,” said Tara Semchuk, owner of Bits & Pieces Keepsake Quilting. Part of Centre Street will be blocked off during the event and the quilts hung up on two clotheslines. Downtown merchants will also display many of the quilts. During the event there will be a barbecue and the Royal Alberta Museum will be presenting a history of quilting in Western Canada, a new addition to this year’s show. There are two ses-

sions with the museum, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. “It’s a new quilt project the museum has been working on and they just started showing public presentations in the last three months,” said Semchuk. Quilting has a long history in North America, and it’s practitioners cite many benefits for the hobby. “Of course blankets keep you warm,” joked Semchuck. “But, it’s a hobby many ladies get a lot of gratification out of. It’s a relaxing hobby and they make great gifts.” Anyone is welcome to have their quilt displayed. Those interested can drop off their quilts at Bits & Pieces Keepsake Quilts on Centre Street anytime before 5 p.m. Friday, July 6. Quilters can request to have their work hung inside or outside. Non-quilters are encouraged to attend as well. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 7. “Come out , take in the sights, and everything else going on,” said Semchuk. “The quilts will be on display for everyone to enjoy.”

The third bi-annual Quilting in the Badlands Outdoor Quilt Show kicks off Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m. in downtown Drumheller. The show displays the comfy artwork of the Drumheller area’s talented quilters. The Royal Alberta Museum will be coming out to this year's show and will give presentations on the history and importance of quilting in Western Canada. filephoto

Flying high in a Robinson R44 Donella Swan The Weekender

Earlier this week, Mountain View Helicopters gave our summer reporter a chance to see what a tour is like first hand. This is a personal account of the experience. Having never flown in a helicopter, or any small aircraft for that matter, driving out to Horseshoe Canyon where Mountain View Helicopters (MVH) operates, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It was a clear day on Monday, June 25, a perfect day for flying. Walking up to the Robinson R44, four-seater helicopter for the first time stirred up the butterflies in my stomach. This is the 10th year of operations for MVH in the Horseshoe Canyon area and the pilots couldn’t be happier. “It’s a thrill of a life time. A lot of people haven’t been in a helicopter and may have mixed views on the safety of it. I’ll be honest with you, I’d rather be in a helicopter if my engine ever did fail,” said Ryan Fornataro, a licensed visual reference find (VRF) pilot. This is because a helicopter is much easier to land in an emergency than bigger aircraft, said Fornataro. He also said many people believe that if there is an engine problem it’s game over. That is just not the case at all, because the blades don’t stop when the engine does said Fornataro. Climbing into the machine, I buckled up and put my

headset on, which enables passengers to communicate with each other and the pilot. The engines sounded almost like a lawn mower when fired up, and the blades began spinning so fast you almost couldn’t see them. When everything was warmed up and ready to go, the helicopter began to lift off the ground. At first, feeling a little nervous, Fornataro assured me there would only be a small amount of that “roller coaster,” feeling when gaining altitude. He was right. Touring over the Horseshoe Canyon is breathtaking. The canyon walls contrasting with the blooming shrubs and green grass caught the eye. Cars looked like ants marching along Highway 9. The layout of the land were like patches in a quilt, and there was a small body of water in the canyon, as though it was being held in a soup bowl. Streams carved the landscape, woven through in an intricate fashion. Getting as high as 270 metres in the air, and as low as 150 metres, the flight provided a view from above and some great picture opportunities. Fornataro made landing the machine look like a piece of cake. Setting it down lightly, it was not a rough experience at all. Overall, the flight was less nerve racking than on a commercial jet. MVH is a flight school based out of Springbank, Alberta, and by doing these tours they provide their top graduates with a chance to get flying hours. MVH has also helped with search and rescue missions that have unfortunately occured in the canyon. Chris King, who is also a VRF pilot, said he recalled a

hiker with a broken leg needing assistance to get out of the canyon. MVH was right there to help. Flights range from six to twelve minutes, and there is room for three passengers in the machine, all of who get a window seat. The shorter tour costs $50 for adults, and $40 for children under 12. The longer tour costs $100 for adults and $80 for under 12 years. Besides tours, MVH is operating a “snack shack" at the canyon beginning this year. For more information on MVH or tours go to mvheli.com or call (403) 334-4354.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Throughout summertime, The Weekender will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

Winners will receive a Drumheller Mail/ inSide Drumheller prize pack! Please give us a call at 403-823-2580, fax at 403-823-3864 , email information@insidedrumheller.com, or visit us on Facebook!

Trevor Davies . Slave Lake, AB Who are you? Trevor Davies. Where are you from? Slave Lake, AB What brings you to Drumheller? My wife and I brought the kids here to see the museum. We are actually on our way to Vancouver Island, and the boys really wanted to stop here along the way. What have you enjoyed so far about the valley? Hiking the badlands was really fun. The coal mine run and the trails at the Tyrrell Museum were pretty cool. Is there anything you would change about Drumheller? Some of the maps around town were confusing. The town is very beautiful and the people have been extremely nice. I can’t believe how much Drumheller has

changed since I visited here as a kid. It’s grown but the landscape has remained beautiful. For people travelling to Slave Lake, what would you tell them to do during their visit? Well things are still rebuilding from the forest fires last summer. However, the lake is beautiful and there are some really nice cabin spaces there. It’s a nice area for camping, fishing, and a lot of hiking. How has the rebuild been coming in Slave Lake? We actually lost our family home to the fires last year. Currently, our new house is about 3/4 of the way done. The town is slowly coming back, and things are going to be good.

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Date announced for Dragons home opener Mark this date on the calendar Dragons fans. The boys hit the ice on September 7 in this season’s home opener. On Wednesday, June 27, the AJHL released the 2012/2013 schedule. The Drumheller Dragons will begin the regular season at home and will be facing the rival Calgary Canucks. However, fans can see the Dragons in action sooner. The team will be facing the Canucks in their ďŹ rst home preseason game on August 29. “It’s important to get more games. You can practice all day, but you need to play against competition. It’s getting the guys in the best game condition they can by playing as many games as they can."

The Canucks ďŹ nished the 2011/2012 regular season three points ahead of the Dragons. The Dragons will also be facing the Olds Grizzlys and Kindersley Klippers of the SJHL in their pre season. The pre season games give a chance for many of the Dragons fresh faces to get accustomed to one another in game situations. “It’s important to get more games. You can practice all day, but you need to play against competition. It’s getting the guys in the best game condition they can by playing as many games as they can. It’ll give everybody an opportunity to get acclimated to each other,â€? said head coach/ general manager, Brian Curran. The preseason games, especially the extra game against Kindersley, will give players time to prove themselves ready for a spot on the Dragons regular season roster. “At that time of the year,

The Dragons have traditionally played one game in Hanna each season. “It’s Drumheller’s team, but we serve a big area. Hanna has been a big part of the Dragons. It gives back to them. We do one game a year. It’s been successful and well received. We get great volunteers and fans who come out. It’s one game a year to reach out to the outlying communities,â€? said Rod Knelsen, owner/ president of the Dragons. For more information about the schedule visit www. ajhl.ca.
