This was inspired by the loss of her mother to cancer. In its first year, it was a success raising $1,200. Undeterred, she nurtured the event into a premier fundraiser for the Drumheller and Area Health Foundation. “Not a penny of this money leaves Drumheller or the surrounding area. It has gone toward better care for patient in and out of the hospital, medications, transportation, equipment, the cancer clinic and palliative care room,” said Vicki Wilton in her address to Morse. “Cathy started this as a way to remember and honour those who she lost and what a beautiful and fitting remembrance it has been. What better way to remember other people than by helping scores of other people.” Finalist Linda Digby was not at the Celebration of Excellence, but did send words, delivered by Jay Russell of the Atlas Coal Mine. Not only was she appreciative of the nominations, but the support of the Rotary and the community in working to preserve local heritage. “ I believe the world is a better place when communities remember and honour our past. When we remember where we have been, it reminds us to make more thoughtful choices about where we are going” Morse was not the only winner this evening. Sasi Sivamayam of Freson Bros. and Margaret “Pinkie” Molyneux of the Drumheller RCMP Detachment were nominated for Most Courteous Employee. Sivamayam took home

He was grateful for the award. “I am overwhelmingly humbled by the kindness and appreciation shown to me by the people of Drumheller,” he said. He recounted walking on a cold day, not long after he arrived in Drumheller, to Freson

Bros. to apply for a job. “A kind man offered a ride and introduced himself as Mayor Bryce Nimmo. I was really astonished by this courteous person offering a ride to a complete stranger. This incident set an example of the goodness of the people of Drumheller, and was an encouragement to me,” he said. “My current job is closest to my heart.” Molyneux was grateful for the nominations. She has 33 years of service and is the “backbone of the detachment.” The Celebration of Excellence was also an opportunity for the Town of Drumheller to present three of its prestigious youth awards. Mayor Terry Yemen proclaimed the week of June 2 to 8 Seniors' Week in Drumheller. •••••• In his opening remarks, the Mayor spoke briefly on his posting near the Polish border on his recent election mission to the Ukraine. •••••• Dr. Jon Ohlhauser of Hope College attended to provide an update on the first year of instruction at the college. He notes year one had six students, year two is on target for 40 students. In year one, the College delivered three licensed programs, there are now eight programs so far to offer for the coming college year. Year one 14 instructors were organized, for the upcoming year they will have 24 instructors. April 2015 will be the date of the first graduations from the College. The College put up posters around East Central Alberta that posed a question to catch attention. The College is in discussions with neighbouring universities regarding credits earned at Hope College being transferable. The College's goal is to raise $150,000 per year over three years, this year's total to date is $79,500. 23 outstanding pledges from 2011 have not yet been received, those total $60,000. The College is sending a letter of invitation to Town Council asking a Council member join the current 7 members of the College's board of directors. •••••• Council approved the appointment of Elizabeth Gallagher to the Drumheller Public Library Board for a three-year term. Ms. Gallagher has resided in Drumheller for about two years, and is

an active member of local volunteer groups and current chair of the Soroptimist Foundation of Canada. The appointment fills a vacancy created by the recent resignation of a Board member. •••••• Town staff is currently reviewing the two responses received for the Request for Proposal the Town sent out on the Aquaplex waterslide. Chief Administrative Officer Ray Romanetz noted a Special Council meeting may be needed to deal with the matter, due to the project's tight time lines. •••••• Community Services Director Paul Salvatore provided an update on work done on the Tourism Funding Model. Community Services has been working inhouse, has received assistance from Bill Wulff of Corporate Services, and has been working with other stakeholder groups in Drumheller, to find the most fair funding solution for all parties. The CAO notes there are so many options available, input is needed from all stakeholders. Mr. Salvatore's department is also working on terms of reference for improvements to the Town website to improve accessibility for the public and town staff. •••••• Council moved to in-camera matters. •••••• After the in-camera session, Council reverted to the regular council meeting and approved a request for retroactive pay for 2013 for a previous Councillor.

Our Conservative Government recognizes that Canada’s seniors have helped build and make our country great. That’s why the Harper Government has a plan to keep taxes low, create jobs and balance the budget so seniors can keep more of their hard earned money in their pockets. Economic Action Plan 2014 introduced new measures to improve the quality of life for Canada’s seniors including enhancing the New Horizons for Seniors Program to enable seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences with others. We are also launching the Canadian Employers for Caregivers Action Plan to work with employers so that caregivers can maximize their participation in the workforce while being able to provide care to their loved ones. Our Government is protecting Canadian seniors who use ďŹ nancial services by requiring enhanced disclosure by banks on the costs and beneďŹ ts of using ‘pow-

ers of attorney’ and joint accounts. As well, we are requiring more sta training related to these services. When it comes to ensuring a strong retirement system for Canada’s seniors, the Harper Government has taken a number of concrete steps to help Canadians save for retirement. For example, our Government created the Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) to help Canadians voluntarily save up to $5, 500 a year, tax free. Neither income earned in a TFSA nor withdrawals from a TFSA aect seniors’ beneďŹ ts and credits, such as the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). We also introduced the largest GIS increase in over 25 years, which provides eligible low-income seniors additional annual beneďŹ ts of up to $600 for single seniors and $840 for couples – helping more than 680,000 seniors across Canada. We are also increasing the amount that GIS recipients can earn while they are employed (from $500 to $3,500) without any reduction in their GIS beneďŹ ts. This means that, for example, a single pensioner earning $3,500 or more will now be able to keep up to an additional $1,500 in annual GIS beneďŹ ts. Beginning in 2007, Canadian seniors have beneďŹ ted from pension income-splitting. They have been able to allocate up to one-half of their income that qualiďŹ es for the existing pension income tax credit

to their resident spouse or common-law partner for income tax purposes. We increased the income-tax Age Credit amount by $2,000 and doubled the Pension Income Credit to $2,000. For Canadian seniors who continue to work, we are expanding the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers by investing $75 million to help unemployed older workers put their talents and experience back to work. We have also brought forward the Pooled Registered Pension Plan (PRPP). The PRPP is new, low-cost, eďŹƒciently managed, portable and accessible savings vehicle for those Canadians - roughly 60 per cent - currently without a workplace pension plan. In addition to all of these measures, our Government’s low tax plan has helped remove over 380,000 seniors from the tax rolls. Since forming government in 2006, about $2.8 billion in annual tax relief has been provided to seniors and pensioners. In 2014, a single senior can earn at least $20,000 and a senior couple at least $40,000 before paying federal income tax. Constituents in the riding of Crowfoot can rest assured that the Harper Government will continue to enhance programs for seniors and ensure that Canada’s retirement income system remains strong. Doing what’s best for our children. Alberta’s students are among the best in the world. To keep it that way, quality teaching is critical. Our teachers are dealing with significant challenges like new technology and curriculum, diverse student needs – and too many young teachers are leaving the profession. At the same time, Albertans want more accountability for what students are accomplishing in school. ‘Doing what’s best for our children.’ That was the direction I gave last year when I formed the independent blue-ribbon Task Force on Teaching Excellence. This dedicated group of educators, school leaders, educational consultants and community leaders used their combined knowledge and experience to make recommendations to achieve continuous improvement in teaching excellence. Task Force membership includes: • Chair Dr. Glenn Feltham – President and CEO of NAIT with an extensive academic and professional background • Vice Chair Sandra Jansen – Associate Minister of Family and Community Safety, MLA for Calgary-North West • Naresh Bhardwaj – Associate Minister of Services for Persons with Disabilities, MLA for Edmonton-Ellerslie and former teacher • David Dorward – MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar, Chartered Accountant and Certified Management Accountant • David Fraser – Executive Director of Corporate Services with Edmonton Public Schools with more than 30 years of human resources experience • Dr. Sharon Friesen – Vice Dean and Associate Dean of Professional and Community Engagement in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary, recipient of a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence • Dr. Irene Lewis – a former teacher and the President Emeritus of SAIT Polytechnic, named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women 2010/2012 • Dr. Craig Loewen – Dean of Education at the University of Lethbridge, recipient of ATA’s Educational Research Award • Mackenzie Martin – a University of Alberta education student, former representative on the Alberta Education Minister’s Student Advisory Committee, recipient of the TD scholarship for Community Leadership • Everett McDonald – MLA for Grande Prairie-Smoky, former reeve, former trustee • Brent McDonough – former teacher serving as an advisor to the Masters in Educational Studies Program at the University of Alberta, co-chair of Inspiring Education Steering Committee, former chair Edmonton Public Library, former member U of A Senate • Michele Mulder – Executive Director of the Alberta School Councils Association, former president of the Alberta School Boards Association 14061DE0 • Andy Neigel – President and CEO of Careers: The Next Generation, has taught at NAIT and the University of Alberta

• Shelley Ralston – National Director of Talent and Culture for a Fortune 500 company, Chair of the Red Deer College Board of Directors, recipient of the Women of Excellence Award 2008 • Laurie Thompson – a current teacher and ATA member, principal at Kikino School – recognized as one of the top 25 Schools in Canada in Today’s Parent magazine • Ron Young – a current teacher, principal and ATA member with more than 30 years of experience

After hearing from 3,000 Albertans, their report is in. Some of their recommendations include: • Increasing the time available to teachers for preparation and collaboration • Internships and reduced workload for first year teachers • Adopting a formal mentorship program to provide more support for beginner teachers, as well as new school and district leaders • Improving evaluation process for teachers and the professional growth plan process • Requiring teachers to maintain certification, with evaluations conducted – with the purpose of demonstrating professional growth and continual evidence of performance – every five years • Increasing access teachers have to technology and specialized supports and services • Requiring new school leaders to complete a leadership program • At education faculties, increasing the amount of current practicum requirements to provide student teachers with more classroom experience before they graduate • Requiring post-secondary institutions to look beyond grades to suitability when admitting education faculty applicants • Increasing transparency and effectiveness of process for complaints of teacher competence or unprofessional conduct – the Task Force report does not recommend splitting the ATA into a college and a union, it prefers the government to work with the ATA to resolve the current issues • Increasing empowerment for principals to deal with teachers that need to improve their skills – the Task Force report does not recommend removing principals from the ATA, it prefers the government to work with the ATA to resolve the current issues

Your government won’t make any decisions without hearing from parents, teachers and everyone who cares about our children’s education. It’s your turn to have a say.

Drumheller Valley Secondary School Class of 2014 embark on next chapter inSide Drumheller

inSide Drumheller is proud to present this special pull-out covering the DVSS Class of 2014 Graduation Ceremony. Pair these pages with the pull-out from May 30 as a special keepsake. Limited copies will be available at our office at no charge. 515 Highway 10 East, Drumheller.

Valedictorian Address The Next Chapter Welcome parents, friends, families, teachers, and of course the graduating class of 2014. This is the day we’ve waited for for 12 memorable years; the time to close one chapter of our life’s book, only to open another. Time has come and gone as we prepare for the adventures our lives will bring. No longer will we be waking up in the mornings and making the journey to school but instead into the wonders of adulthood. Our stories began in kindergarten meeting new characters, some becoming main characters, and others fading into the background but none the less still part of the story. Playing in the sand box and nap time were common practices. (Although nap time would have been more appreciated through high school). It was this year that set into motion the school years that followed. Our next chapter finds us in elementary school. Learning our ABC’s, our 123’s and of course enjoying recess. The time when boys had cooties and girls were sensitive, (to say the least). When it was okay to postpone school for swimming lessons, ski days and the annual Christmas play (those were the glory

days). The Next chapter brought us to our junior high years. The years dreaded by parents and teachers alike. The years where hormones ran rampant and the girls wore poorly applied makeup; while the boys went through episodes of voice cracking and awkward attempts at wheeling. This was also the time when girls stood on one side of the gym at dances and the boys on the other. (We all remember those awkward days). The most recent section of our book brings us to the senior high years. The years of driver’s licences, part-time jobs, and of course, parties. When sometimes, having a social life was more important than school. (Only sometimes). High school left us all with many memories in the classroom, from Raz’s energetic Bio classes, Mrs. Hemming’s communications classes and snack day, Mr. Hird’s ability to be ‘excited’ for even the hardest math classes, and of course, CALM with Mr. Hatch. (We all remember the tiger skin rug). Outside of the classroom our classmates have been gifted with outstanding athletic abilities. From winning 3 Provincial Championships in a row in football, the boys and girls volleyball and basketball teams competing in zones as well as provincials, to our hockey players winning numerous banners. Not to mention the countless hours devoted by our teacher coaches, Mr. Messom, Mr. Hatch, Mr. Rasmussen, Mr. Berdahl and Ms. Sullivan. With all that has been written in our life stories, this is only the beginning. These past 12 years have prepared us with the skills necessary to face and conquer the world in whatever way we choose. As

2014

Dr. Seuss wrote, “So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed).” No matter where we have come from, some of us from this valley, others from halfway around the world, we stand here today united as the class of 2014 ready to write OUR next chapter. DVSS 2014 Valedictorians Laura Jensen and Alan Lister

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Gerald Clarke of Nacmine brought his 1932 Ford Roadster out for display at Cruisin’ the Dub Thursday night. The car is all new, with the body being reproduced in Sparks, Nevada, and the transmission and 350 Chevy mo-

tor from Western Chev. The car took two years to redo. The original vehicle came with a canvas roof, but Clarke likes the look of the car without.

Bench and his Preliminary Inquiry was set for last week. It was heard in front of Judge L. Greive. There is a publication ban on evidence presented at the hearing. The inquiry wrapped up late Friday afternoon. Judge Grieve ruled that Laughlin is committed to stand trial on charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault. He will be arraigned in Court of Queen’s Bench on July 24.

license plate number. While at home during the lunch, again they saw the vehicle cruising down their alley slowly. The couple were concerned enough to call the Drumheller RCMP. The next day they received a call and learned the RCMP were able to catch up with the car near the Canadian Badlands Passion Play site. The car turned out to be a stolen vehicle from Calgary. Drumheller RCMP knew one of the occupants, and three other occupants were known to police. They had empty backpacks stowed in the car.

The occupants were arrested and returned to Calgary. For the Nacmine residents, it appears their suspicions were well grounded.

are WHO you? Emily Hollingshead Age: 30 Occupation: Director Library Services, Drumheller Public Library How long have you lived here? Almost two months. Where did you move from? Edmonton. Aside from a year and a half at school in BC, lived there my entire life. What do you miss most about Edmonton? My family. What do you like most about here? I love that I can walk everywhere. There’s lots to do here. Library staff have been giving me a list of things I need to do this summer. Anything catch your eye on that list? The Mine sounds intriguing. I’ll have to take my Dad, he has a background in Geology, I think he’d really enjoy it. Do you have any pets? I have a Pomeranian papillion named Pippi. She’s an esape artist. Do you have a travel

wish list? I do! The United Kingdom and Scandinavia. How have you changed since early university? I’m more confident, and I have a clearer idea of what I want long term. Does that include any superpowers? (laugh.) I always wanted to fly. How do you like your steak? Inside the cow. I’m a vegetarian. What’s that like? I eat dairy products, and eggs ocassionally, and beans, seeds, nuts, grains, and high protein veggies. How many restaurants have you tried here? Three so far, all were good - I’d go back. How much time do you spend on social media? Personally, not a ton anymore. I use it so much for work, I lose track of the fact I haven’t used it personally for awhile. Recommended summer reading? Come and ask me.

If there’s no room in the backyard for a horse, consider being a horse supporter instead. As part of the RCMP Musical Ride fundraiser, businesses or families are able to purchase a sign with their name to put on the stall door of a Musical Ride horse. There are 36 horses, and sponsors will get to keep the placard that shows the horse’s name, and family or business name. The Musical Ride arrives in town July 28, and the public is welcome to come and meet the riders and horses from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The two Musical Ride performances are July 29, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a pre-show performance. Details on that will be released later. The Musical Ride is a fundraiser for two local non-profit organziations, Big Country Victim Services and the Drumheller District Stampede and Agricultural Society. Judy Nelson of Big Country Victim Services estimates the event

requires about 80 volunteers, based on the previous visit of the Musical Ride in 2010. Anyone interested in volunteering can phone Judy Nelson at 403823-4233, leaving their name and phone number, and stating they would like to volunteer with the Musical Ride.

Nelson said volunteers will receive a drink ticket, get to attend one of the performances, and attend the hot roast beef dinner after the second show. Big Country Victim Services provides services in the territory covered by the Drumheller, Hanna and Oyen RCMP detachments.

Who’s got game? Aaron Rast, left, and James Bagwell, of Goblins N’ Such, host of game nights at the Badlands Community Facility, with a Star Wars game. Game night is every Friday night at BCF from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants can bring board games or a favourite game to play, such as Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh. Bagwell said game players range in age from 14 to 43, and that game playing is really good for math and problem solving, plus its relatively cheap and fun - and who doesn’t like to have fun? inSide photo by Michele Scott

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 A great idea has sidetracked you for some time now, Libra. But now it’s time to get back into your normal routine and focus on the tasks at hand.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

It might seem overwhelming right now, but things will settle down in a matter of days. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you may want to be invisible in the crowd this week, but that scenario simply isn’t in the cards. Grin and bear the attention.

How to make Father’s Day more enjoyable for Dad Dad gets to be king of his castle at least one day during the year. Come mid-June, children near and far scramble for ideas to treat their fathers to a special day and award him with gifts for being a role model, provider and confidante. Father’s Day activities should be centered around Dad’s interests. With that in mind, the following are some ideas to honor Dad or another special man in your life. * Sports Sunday: If Dad is a sports fan, his idea of spending a fun-filled afternoon very well may be cheering on his favorite players. Whether your father enjoys golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, or another sport like hunting or fishing, chances are there is a television broadcast on that you can watch together. Otherwise, you can surprise Dad by purchasing tickets to a sporting event and making a day of it at the ballpark. * Beach bound: A relaxing day at the beach may be the perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Dad can enjoy the entire family while sitting back in his beach chair and watching the waves roll in. Pack a picnic lunch with his favorite foods and a cold beer, and Dad may just say this was his best celebration yet. * Adventure seeker: If yours is a father who enjoys living on the edge, a Father’s Day activity built around action and adventure should be a winner. Take Dad base jumping, rock climbing, scuba diving, or race car driving. Any of these activities is bound to get Dad’s adrenaline pumping. * R&R: Dad’s idea of the perfect Father’s Day may be an afternoon free of obligations and deadlines. A relaxing day in the yard swimming laps in the pool or hitting a few grounders to your waiting baseball mitt may be all the excitement he needs. Toss a few steaks on the grill to give Father’s Day a truly perfect ending. * Impromptu party: Some dads like to be the center of attention. A Father’s Day party thrown in his honor, complete with friends and family, can be an entertaining way to spend the day. If you are worried about interrupting others’ Father’s Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father’s Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Finger foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music are all that you need to host a festive function. Plan a Father’s Day celebration with your dad in mind. Cater to his favorite activities and opt for entertainment that he will enjoy.

Dragons Captain off to Western University

Provincials bound A Grade 10 track athlete at DVSS is off to Provincials Friday June 6 in Calgary. Sam Brown has been participating on the track team since Grade 7 and now in Grade 10 he has won a berth in the 3000m race. Sam finished 2nd at the Zone Championship which gave him a ticket to Calgary. Sam will face some tough competition on Friday as he will be competing against athletes from all over the Province in the Junior category. Sam was happy with his time at Zones but he thinks he can improve it at Provincials. Sam is coming off a first place finish in the under 20 category at the Calgary Marathon this past weekend. He placed 47th overall in the 50km marathon.
