Fallen firefighters honoured Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Fire Department has served the valley for more than 90 years and in that time, has had an impressive record saving buildings and numerous lives. There have only been two fatalities in the department in that time, but these deaths strike right at the heart of the Drumheller Fire Department. Harry Lefebre died battling a fire in 1937 and Adolf Guterson perished in 1951, also protecting the community. Harry was the brother-in-law of Drumheller’s first Fire Chief, William Guterson, and Adolf was his son. In response to a suggestion, members of the Drumheller Fire Department took a few moments Wednesday night to tidy up the graves at the Drumheller Cemetery of these three dignified Drumhellerites. William Guterson was the first and longest standing Drumheller Fire Chief. Local lore recalls he was selected as chief in 1919 because as a painter, he owned a ladder. He was married in 1915 to Antoinette Lefebre, and as well as operating a contracting business and a hardware store, he served

until 1961 as fire chief. When he retired, he was honoured as Canada’s oldest and longest serving Fire Chief. While a firefighter, Queen Elizabeth II cited him for his heroics, saving the life of “Tip” Nicholas in a fire at the Alexander Hotel in 1940. Guterson’s history of firefighting is not all heroics. In fact, two of his greatest tragedies were great losses to the community. The first came on February 2 1937. Henry Lefebre, brotherin-law of Guterson, was also a veteran firefighter and responded with the department to a fire at the NB Vickers Hardware Store. According to a newspaper account, Lefebre was handling a stream of water at the rear of the premise with fellow firefighter James Mains, when the roof of the Vickers Store collapsed. This caused a rush of air that buckled the concrete and brick wall. Lefebre was struck by the debris and killed instantly. According to the Lefebre/ Guterson family history, the family endured, because only a short time before the tragedy, the Fire Department became a part of the Workers Compensation Board, which gave the family a benefit.

What was more important was the family connection that helped the family rebuild. As written in the family history by Frank Lefebre: “The biggest benefit we received was from the Guterson and Lefebre families living in Drumheller… the aunts and uncles provided a lot of support to Ma in the raising of her three boys. She always mentioned how much she appreciated having this family around her and how much they accepted and helped her in these tough times.” The second tragedy of the Drumheller Fire Department struck even closer to William Guterson, and that was the loss of his son Adolf. In the early hours of Decem-

ber 7, 1951, the Drumheller Fire Department was called to the Napier Theatre. William’s 23-year-old son was among the firefighters who responded. Firefighters spent several hours fighting the fire in the bitter cold. Adolf was on the west side of the building when the wall collapsed and a 200-pound piece of coping hit him in the middle of his back. Suffering from numerous injuries. He was rushed by ambulance to the University Hospital in Edmonton. He succumbed to his injuries on December 16. The Drumheller Fire Department has not forgotten the heroics and the tragedy of their fellow firefighters.

One of Drumheller’s most unique school programs came to a close last week. Roots of Empathy, which is delivered to students at St. Anthony’s and Greentree Schools, wrapped up another successful year on Wednesday, May 29, with a thank you dinner for the instructors, teachers, organizers, and moms who help run the program. “It’s amazing program. The kids and teachers love it, and it’s an opportunity for the parents to share,” said Cathy Smoliak, Drumheller Family Community Support Serves coordinator. The program runs for most of the school year

and is designed to instill empathy within Drumheller’s youngest minds. “Roots of Empathy is a program delivered to Grade 1 students at St. Anthony’s School and Grade 5 students at Greentree School,” said Smoliak. “The instructors undergo training and bring in a mom an her baby to the classroom to deliver 27 different lessons to students. The intent is to increase empathy in our children, so they are more socially and emotionally competent. They see the mom and the baby, and learn about their growth.” Organizers are already looking ahead to next year and are searching for instructors and new moms to be a part of teaching the developing

The principal of St. Anthony’s School JoAnne Akerboom was able to get an audience with Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver when he was through town on Saturday. Akerboom, who is concerned with the safety of St. Anthony’s students crossing North Dinosaur Trail, has made appeals to Town Council and to Drumheller-Stettler MLA, Rick Strankman for support to make some changes. She said Strankman was instrumental in making the meeting happen. “I talked to the MLA’s office, the Town, the RCMP, and I was in the process of putting a letter together in collaboration with all of them. I went to Rick Strankman and he said he would champion this, move it forward, and was able to arrange the meeting with the Minister,” said Akerboom. Strankman said with McIver in town, it was a natural to have the minister meet with her. “’For him to have time to meet with us on a local safety issue for school kids, to me is a priority, and the ministers recognized that,” said Strankman. Some solutions Akerboom has suggested include

making it a school zone, adding flashing warning lights at key times during the day when there is more student traffic, add a pedway over the intersection, lower the speed limit to 50 kmph in the Midland area, or create a traffic circle. At the meeting with Akerboom were Strankman and Christ the Redeemer trustee Paul Andrew. Akerboom said the minister was accepting of the ideas. “It was a great meeting,” said Akerboom. “The big thing was that he looked at it and appreciates the concerns we have. It was a great, very collegial meeting, he let everyone speak.” Minister McIver agreed it was a productive meeting. “The principal was talking about issues that would make it as safe as possible crossing the highway to get to school,” said McIvor. “We need to think about what we can do to make it better and as a result of the meeting we’re going to look at a number of options that could be appropriate and what could be put in place.” He expects the department will be in contact with the school within a month.

Once things stabilize, the hunt will begin for a permanent executive director. “I think before we do that, we want to make sure the organization is situated where we want. It’s hard to hire someone new when the structure is changing, so we hired someone on an interim basis to get the organization where we want to be,” said Jones. WORKS Associate Minister reassures residents over PDD changes Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The province is rolling out changes to persons with developmental disabilities (PDD) services, which is creating some unease among users of the Drumheller and Region Transition Society (DARTS). The non proďŹ t organization, that helps person’s with developmental disabilities, is currently waiting for their contract with the Province of Alberta to be ďŹ nalized. To date, there isn’t any indication of what the new contract will entail. On Thursday, June 6, the Associate Minister for Persons with Disabilities, the Honourable Frank Oberle, discussed the issues at a meeting at the Badlands Community Facility. One of the biggest concerns is $42 million being pulled out of community access funding. “There are concerns at this point because there are a lot of unknowns at this time tied to funding and support needs. We do not have anything in writing yet. We had an extension on our contract until July 1, but I still do not have any details,â€? said Lorelei Martin, executive director of DARTS. “The reduction does not imply people will be alone during the day. People with higher needs still need sta in their homes if they are

not engaged in the community all day.â€? Oberle assured those present at the meeting the $42 million was not lost, but instead reallocated to give front-line sta a 10 per cent wage increase. It was felt the money could be spent more eďŹƒciently. “My budget went up. That $42 million stayed

over their futures. “We’ve been purposely not ďŹ lling some of the vacant positions that were not mandatory and using other sta to cover those positions. We’ve been looking at how we can best utilize the manpower we have,â€? said Martin. “We are telling our sta not to go looking for other jobs. The

Associate Minister for Persons with Disabilities, the Honourable Frank Oberle (left), outlined the changes taking place in services for persons with developmental disabilities at a meeting at the Badlands

in the budget...it is being consumed by a wage increase for front-line workers,â€? said Oberle. “We do those things (community access) and still get low marks on social inclusion. We want to do better and focus more on activities that allow people to be independent as possible... with the right kind of support.â€? The roughly 80 sta who work for DARTS had expressed concern

that helps persons with disabilities ďŹ nd employment and volunteer opportunities. “They’re in the process of a transition they’ve been looking at for the past three years. It includes a shift from community access to community engagement. The provincial perspective and inuence is moti-

intent of the roles may be changing, but we still need sta. The province is emphasizing a change in focus of its programs from community access to community engagement. The goal is to focus on programming

vating us to move more in that direction, which aligns with our philosophy, said Martin. The transition could take time. A lot of the details regarding how the change will occur have yet to be determined, but Oberle explained

PDD service providers and individuals would be involved. “We have to have conversations with every service provider in the province and every individual and their family or guardian. It’s a very personal, local exercise,â€? said Oberle. “There’s a lot of work to do. It’s not going to be on July 1 we ick a switch, it’s a work in progress. The vision we have, I’m convinced, is right. It’s the process to get there and the anxiety it creates. But, if you need services, you’re going to get services.â€? The transition is part of the province’s new result-based funding mantra. Oberle feels there is room for improvement in PDD services. “We want to start contracting based on outcome. If someone wants to be employed, what do you we need to do to support them,â€? said Oberle. “There are some macro level measures, too. In our PDD community we have about a 20 per cent employment rate. In Washington State, it’s over 60 per cent. I’m not target their model or employment numbers, but there is a clear indication. There is an opportunity for us to do

We want to help people achieve their personal goals. Martin was glad Oberle paid a visit to Drumheller, but acknowledged there still are unanswered questions. “The vision is clear and conďŹ rmed, which is great. Some of the details on the how are unknown. What is clear, is we’ll all need to work together to ďŹ gure that out,â€? said Martin. “I’m glad it was conďŹ rmed that there won’t be strict time constraints. DinoFest roars into town today DinoFest grows into second year Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

This weekend there are literally dozens of things to roar about; after all, it’s DinoFest. This is the second annual DinoFest and leading up to the event, organizers were promising to make it bigger and better. They have lived up to their word; more food, more music, more fun. “There is just all kinds of great things going on,” said Mike Dooley, member of the Drumheller Festival Committee, which organizes the event. A number of the events you came to know and love are back, including Taste of Drumheller, where a full slate of Drumheller restaurants will be set up letting residents and visitors have a sample of their offering. Last year this was one of the highlights for many who attended. “There is going to be a farmers market too, with quite a few different vendors from around town and special guests from outside of town, including the Tour of Alberta,” said Dooley. Also back is the Encana Kidszone where there will be all kinds of fun for youngsters ready to run off some energy. There are also kids activities presented by the Royal Tyrrell Museum, Dinosaur Provincial Park, and the Atlas Coal Mine. New for the kidlets, is the Kids Dino Costume Parade. CLUES ACROSS

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Life experience is your advantage, Taurus. When your company is looking to fill a position, they will most likely hire from within. Make the most of this opportunity.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you may have fun in the sun on your mind, but others are urging you to buckle down and focus on some tasks that need to get wrapped up before you leave. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 There are some changes coming at work, Virgo. You just don’t know if they will be to your advantage or be something that could tilt you off your axis. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, changes at home are in store and you may be feeling both excited and anxious at the same time. This is perfectly understandable as you await the news.

HAPPENINGS Arts education alive and well in rural Alberta Submitted | inSide Drumheller

Last week’s approval by Mount Royal University’s (MRU) Board of Governors to suspend eight non-degree-granting programs, including their diploma in theatre arts, has left a void in the arts education sector of Alberta. With many MRU students now wondering where they can continue their arts training, Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) in Rosebud, Alberta, wants students to know there are other viable options that also offer smaller class sizes and strong relationships with instructors. “RSA offers a fouryear professional theatre training program in the hamlet of Rosebud, about an hour northeast of Calgary city limits,” says Paul F. Muir, education director at RSA. “Like MRU, our class sizes are smaller and our students get a hands-on, mentorship approach to training.

Our relationship with Rosebud Theatre means students have valuable opportunities to apprentice with Alberta’s largest rural professional theatre company.” When the cuts to MRU were first announced back in April, Muir joined the thousands of concerned citizens in writing a letter to MRU’s board urging them to reconsider. “Any cuts to arts training in this province affect us all. Whether students pursue a career in the theatre, or study as part of a broader education, the benefits to arts education are wide-reaching.” Muir continues, “The arts help us articulate the system of beliefs we uphold and what we value, and of course the reflection of our cultural history is held in our music, our plays, our dance, and our visual art. We must always fight to uphold the articulation of our identity through the arts, because it is our stories, in whatever creative ways they are ex-

pressed, that reveal who we are.” On June 12, RSA will lend its support to the Save Our Fine Arts (SOFA) rally at the Epcor Centre protesting provincial budget cuts to post-secondary education. On June 13 and 14, it will hold its 2013 Calgary Open House at the Epcor’s Arts Learning Centre and will extend a special invitation to MRU theatre students. “We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at MRU and want to ensure their students get the quality education they are looking for,” says Muir. Mike Peng, Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Wishbone Theatre has described RSA graduates as open-hearted

performers whose talents are a testament to training that aims to be specific, disciplined and authentic. Notable RSA graduates include Karl Sine, Certified Fight Instructor and actor working across Canada. Sine has appeared in several roles at Theatre Calgary, most recently as Mr. Wickham in their 2012 production of Pride and Prejudice which went on to play at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Another notable alumna is Lennette Randall, a 2012 graduate who has already appeared on the Calgary theatre scene in Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead, and Hairspray, and will appear in Romeo & Juliet this summer.

are WHO you? Dr. David Eberth

Age: 60. Occupation: Curator of Sedimentary Geology and Palaeoecology, Royal Tyrrell Museum. What got you interested in palaeontology? It started when I was in university doing an Evolutionary Biology course. I thought studying evolution was cool. But, now you focus on geology? I took geology to better understand the environments these animals were living in and to do that, you need to look at the geology. Where have you done fieldwork that really stands out? Mongolia is just an absolutely gorgeous, stunning country. The rocks produce amazing fossils. Anywhere you’d want to do some fieldwork? It’d be great to go South Af-

rica to see the Karoo Red Beds and look for fossils. When and where would you travel to in time? To the early Permian. The ecosystems were so bizarre. Who would you want to hang out with for a day? Charles Darwin. What dinosaur would you want as a pet? A giant sauropod (long-necked dinosaur). Favourite dinosaur movies: Jurassic Park and the first Land Before Time. Any hobbies? I play guitar with Roadside Attraction. What are you listening to these days? Afro Celt Soundsystem and my all-time favourtie album is Super Session, with Mike Bloomfield, Stephen Stills, and Al Kooper. Any words of wisdom? Read Dilbert every day.

DVSS students live with no regrets Students at Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) were challenged to live with no regrets. On Friday, May 31, DVSS held its second No Regrets Day, organized by the Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club, the school’s anti-bullying group. The day was a roaring success according to organizers. “It’s bigger and better than last year,” said teacher Lynn Hemming, who helps the FOR Club. “We’re encouraging kids to make good choices in their lives, so they live with no regrets. We don’t want them to make foolish choices and then have to live with consequences that would plague them for the rest of their lives. Last year, we felt the message got out really loud and clear, and it did again this year.” In the morning, Grade 7 and 8 students took some time to clean litter in the area surrounding the school. Senior high students attended a sex education-themed presentation.

The day was made possible through a $24,000 provincial grant. “It’s about making good choices in life, in particular when it comes to relationships and sexuality. The grant made it possible to finance the special event and other educational materials, conferences, and staff professional development. It’s going to have an impact for years to come, because we now have resources in place we did not have two years ago,” said Hemming. In the afternoon, students and teachers were treated to a barbecue and some fun. The day culminated in a softball showdown between teachers and students. The students had the upper hand in the early innings, but the teachers rallied and came away with the win. It is hoped No Regrets Day will continue to be an annual event at DVSS. “I believe it’s already been entrenched in our school culture that it will become something we do on a regular basis,” said Hemming.

A local runner made good time and a great donation to the Alberta Arthritis Society. Sam Brown, 15, participated in the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon on May 26. Of 12,000 runners, he came in at 193rd place, and second in the under 20 category with a time of 3:35:23.80, his best.

He said it was a thrilling race and in fact, he was able to listen to Benard Onsare, the twotime winner of the event, speak, as well as Olympic triathlete, Simon Whitfield. He was even able to run with them. The marathon is a charity race and overall this year it raised $930,000. Sam’s part was a $680-plus donation to the Alberta Arthritis Society. The charity is meaningful to him, as he knows a number of people who are dealing with arthritis. The Scotiabank branch in Drumheller was supportive of his race and helped to collect pledges. in a half Ironman race in Fort McLeod, a 10k race in Taber, and of course the Dinosaur Half.

“The last week before any kind of race, you need to taper off whatever training distance you’re doing by 40 per cent. You should’ve peaked about a week before. The rest of the week you should be just maintaining things,” said Syvertsen. “Focus on getting a good sleep, hydrate, and carb-load with lots of pasta dinners, so come the race, you’re fueled up and ready to go. It’s really easy to overtrain and get burnt out.” I’m not exactly the Flash, but I hope to post a time around 28 minutes in the race, which is a little faster than I have been running so far. I’ve also been working on my form over the past couple weeks and Sy-

vertsen has some advice. “After the last time we spoke, I wanted to share a little acronym I use when running called SELF. It helps assess how your run is doing,” said Syvertsen. “The S stands for smooth, in that you don’t want to be bobbing up and down as you run. The E is for easy. You shouldn’t be going at a hard, stressful pace. The L stands for light, which means you want to run lightly, landing on your toes or whole foot. The F is for fast. When I’m out running, I ask myself if I’m going smooth? Is the run easy? Am I landing on my feet right? Am I going fast? It helps me out.” Registration for the triathlon starts at 8 a.m. at the Drumheller Aquaplex on Saturday, June 8, with the race soon after. Come cheer and good luck to all the participants!

I’m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks I’ll write about my training and what I’ve learned. This weekend is my first test. I’m participating in this year’s Drumheller Triathlon as part of a three-person team. I’ll be finishing the race in the 5 kilometre run section. I’ve been at the point where I can run 5 kilometres, without walking, for the past several weeks (probably one of the first times in my life I could do so). I asked Morgan Syvertsen, the organizer of the triathlon, what to do in the week preceeding the race.
