The vibrancy of the community was on display at the annual Sports, Recreation and Arts Expo March 12 at the Badlands Community Facility. There were dozens of booths from area groups offering activities for the whole family. The expo ran from 4 to 8 pm and showcased some local groups to help families start thinking of an active spring. Re: The March 12th Flood Information Session As a typically concerned Drumheller resident who has been evacuated twice in the last 10 years, I attended the Wednesday night Flood Information Session with much interest. I was particularly curious about the structure and operation of the Dickson Dam, as this is a very major part of any Drumheller flood story. I left the meeting more confused than when I arrived. Shortly after 5 p.m. I spoke to a few representatives of the Dam, hoping to clarify some misconceptions. I explained that many of us in Drumheller formerly thought that operators were simply not bothering to release water early on in a flood event, but I had come to understand that it was

ment facility will be operated as the clubhouse this season. The club felt this facility is an improvement and should be utilized to its fullest potential and for the benefit of members. Last season the addition of Chef Peter MacDiarmid has helped the club build a reputation as a place where great food will be served, whether it is an after-

noon snack or dinner. This is enhanced by the addition of Carmello Sangregorio as the new food and beverage manager. “He has moved to Drumheller to be closer to family, but we are lucky to have him as he has years of experience in food and beverage and most recently was the food and beverage manager at Carnmoney

presently physically not possible to release significant water from the dam until levels rose. I wondered whether any study was being done on the feasibility of building or improving flood gates to allow increased early release. A government/dam official informed me that no changes were being considered, and that they could have released water earlier but chose not to. Levels that were safe for Drumheller, such as 600 cubic metres per second (m3/s), would flood others. Who? I asked. A couple of farms just below the dam. I must admit that I was stunned by the response. When huge volumes of water are coming into the dam, and they know that outflows well above 1000 m3/s are imminent, they purposefully decline to release 600 m3/s to protect a few farms that will soon be flooded anyway? I gave up asking questions, and listened to their dam presentation. We were informed that it is their job to fill the dam, and not to empty it. At the end of the session, the officials doing the speaking made it clear that they would not answer any questions, but we could talk to their staff at the back. The junior staff that were stuck answering the questions claimed they

Golf and Country Club just south of Calgary. I look forward to him streamlining our operation and bringing a lot of new ideas to Dinosaur Trail,” said Davidson. They are hoping the support continues for the club as it gets ready to host its annual dinner and silent auction. This year the auction is on Saturday, April 12 at the Badlands Community Facility. The evening includes a special prime rib dinner, prepared by its own Chef MacDiarmid. This is followed up by a live and silent auction with Derek Dekeyser manning the block. Tickets are available from any board member or at the golf course. For more information, or to donate an item to the auction, call 403-823-5622 or e-mail mitch@dinosaurtrailgolf.com.

were releasing water as quickly as they could, and maybe someone should look at structural changes to the spillway. Who knows what the truth is. While the information session may not have answered all my questions, it did confirm just how important the operation of the Dickson Dam is to flood mitigation for Drumheller. I believe we must make sure that the structure, and the operating policy, of the dam allows for early release of more water during a flood. I expect that it would be cheaper for the province to modify the dam than to replace (or buy out) the town of Drumheller. Sincerely Yours, Hugh D. Sommerville, Q.C.

Police committee seeks input for enforcement priorities Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Police Committee is looking for input into this year’s policing priorities going forward. Fred Makowecki, chair of the Police Committee says one of the many roles of the group is to help focus policing priorities based on the concerns of the community. He explains that prior to this, priories were set division wide. He says it is important for residents to let their voices be heard. Over the last year he has listened to many people’s concerns regarding fraud as well as distracted driving and moving violations. To help the committee bring these priories to the RCMP, simply go to http://www.dinosaurvalley.com/policingcommittee-survey to ďŹ ll out a short survey. The survey is conďŹ dential and will help set the goals.

ARTISTS SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERISM = VOLUNTEERS SUPPORTING ARTISTS!

The FCSS Coordinator from the Town of Drumheller is trying to coordinate a Silent Auction to recruit new volunteers for the community. The idea is to try and find artists who would be willing to donate a piece of their art to a community silent auction. The purpose of the silent auction is to recruit new volunteers and / or extend current Volunteers’ hours of volunteering. These individuals would bid a number of volunteer hours in order to receive that actual piece of art. As a silent auction the highest bidder (most hours offered for volunteerism) would win the art. We would encourage youth to submit both their art and their time as well. The Vision for this auction is to have the art displayed for the length of the auction in the Badlands Community Facility Art Gallery, thereby providing the artist with a free showing of their work. Any artist who donates a piece of art would receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the art donated. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you would be interested in donating art to our initiative, please contact Jennie Lutz at 403-823-1365 or email her at jlutz@dinosaurvalley.com The Silent Auction will take place from April 7th to April 11th.

Three Hills RCMP respond to fatal collision Submitted | inSide Drumheller

A 47-year-old Huxley man perished in a two-vehicle collision last Tuesday afternoon near Trochu. On March 11, at about 4:45 p.m., Three Hills RCMP, Trochu Fire Department, and Alberta Health Services responded to reports of a serious two vehicle collision at the intersection of Range Road 25-1 and Township Road 33-2, about 26 km North West of Three Hills. Further reports indicated one of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames. The investigation revealed that a 2014 Ford Explorer driven by a 60-year old female from Trochu was travelling north on Range Road 25-1 when it was struck by a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck that failed to stop at a stop sign.

The pickup truck was being driven by a 47-yearold male who was travelling east on Township Road 33-2. The pickup truck was found fully engulfed in flames by other motorists who came upon the scene. The fire was extinguished by the fire department upon their arrival. Although he escaped the burning vehicle and did not sustain burn injuries, the driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the Ford Explorer was transported to Red Deer Hospital by ground ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time and is pending notification of next of kin. Road and weather conditions were not a factor in this collision. A collision analyst attended the scene. RCMP continues to investigate.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, emergency services from Drumheller and Delia responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 576 just west of Highway 851. A single tanker truck was eastbound on Highway 576 when it crossed the centre line and entered the north ditch. The truck rolled as it entered the ditch, coming to rest on the passenger side. The male driver and only occupant was assisted out of the truck cab by passing motorists and was then transported to Drumheller Health Centre by ambulance with undetermined injuries. He was indicated to be in stable condition. The truck was loaded with a “KCL Water” mixture, which is not a dangerous fluid, and was leaking as a result of the rollover. The trucking company attended the scene immediately and used a vacuum truck to offload the tanker. RCMP and the Department of Transportation continue to investigate this incident. photo submitted

Amanda GORDON Age:36 Occupation: Optician, H&H Optical What do you enjoy most about your job? I think helping people see - when they put on their first pair of glasses. ( I dispense the glasses.) The best part is helping them pick out glasses. Or I enjoy surprising customers by fixing a pair of mangled glasses they think can’t be repaired. How long have you lived here? 25 years. Where did you move from? Vegreville, Alberta. What do you miss about being there? Old friends - I moved here in Grade 7. I still keep in touch with some of them from way back when. What do you like best about living here? It’s hard to choose - I like living in the valley. I like the hills. I like the people. What are your favourite hobbies? I usually go out and exercise - Zumba. I like

walking along the river, and hanging out with the kids. What do you do in your spare time? What spare time? I volunteer for the Scouts I’m the registrar, plus we do bottle drives, cub car rallies. I do whatever I can when they need me. What’s something about you most people don’t know? I was adopted. I’m not sisters with my co-worker, although most people think I am. What would be your favourite song to sing at karaoke? I don’t sing karaoke - I sing to myself in the car. (I listen to a whole bunch of different music.) If you could win a trophy for anything...? Best Wife Ever. I think I need that one. Do you have a favourite saying? It’s probably not appropriate. Any last thoughts? Go big or go home.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Alumni bests Sabres Sabres, young and old, and even a few Saints gathered last Friday for St. Anthony’s basketball alumni games. This year the Alumni were tough as the girls were able to best the Saints junior girls. This performance was followed by the boys alumni, along with a couple coaches, beating the senior boys Sabres. While the alumni players are able to nurse their aches and pains, the Sabres are heading into the post season. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa
