Big year. Big cake. BCF celebrates first birthday Badlands Community Facility (BCF) business manager Guy Latour (left) and Mayor Terry Yemen blow out the candle for the first birthday of the facility. On March 13, Town officials, BCF staff, contributors to the BCF, and public gathered in the facility to celebrate its first anniversary and have some cake. One year ago the BCF opened its doors to the public. Since then, usage of the building has exceeded initial projections, with the fitness centre, field house, and meetings rooms constantly bustling. inSide photo by Michael James

The Dinosaur Valley Heritage Society is moving forward with a bold new plan to revitalize the aging East Coulee School Museum. Recently, the Heritage Society contracted Paul Conrad & Associates Ltd. to create a new business plan for the School Museum, with the goal for remediation and redevelopment. “We’re doing a top down engineering review of the School Museum, strategic business plan, and a scan of the market to see where we ďŹ t into the local tourism sector,â€? said Brent Noland, president of the Dinosaur Valley Heritage Society. “Instead of reacting to each new emergency, we decided to step back and set ourselves up strategically for the next 20 years.â€? To help the process, the Heritage Society is asking stakeholders to participate in the study. “Our board of directors wants our stakeholders and partners to be aware the ďŹ rst step will be conducting interviews and surveys with organizations involved with the museum and its programs,â€? said Noland. “We encourage them to take some time to have their views known and to be a part of the process.â€? The resulting business plan aims to gain feedback

Funding for the study was provided by Canalta. The decision to develop the business plan was made after the museum boiler broke down last winter and most of the plumbing was damaged this winter. “We had a gas backup heater, keeping things just above freezing in the museum, but it failed just before Christmas. So, a bunch of our plumbing cracked. We looked at it and decided it wasn’t really worth ďŹ xing, so we’re doing a major plumbing upgrade, which is a must before SpringFest,â€? said Noland. Hope springs eternal when the curtain rises on Rosebud Theatre’s 30th Anniversary Season in Rosebud. Veteran actors and fan-favourite company members will take to the stage in one of the most popular comedies by America’s most produced and successful playwright. Neil Simon’s hilarious romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park opens Friday, March 22 and sets the stage for an engaging and memorable season to come to the Rosebud Opera House. As one of Simon’s earliest and most popular comedies, this lighthearted romance between a straight-laced lawyer and an impetuous free spirit begins where most romantic comedies end, bringing reality and humor to the life that happens after two people fall in love and get married. Artistic director Morris Ertman believes it is the perfect piece to open a

landmark season celebrating wonderful lives. “It’s fun. It’s funny. It’s meaningful,” Ertman said. “Barefoot in the Park is about a wonderful time in life; those early days of marriage when hope keeps love afloat.” Ertman was inspired to bring this play to life in Rosebud after observing older couples walking hand in hand through the quiet streets of the hamlet. “Couples will be taken back to their newlywed days, either good or bad, and enjoy reminiscing

about how far they’ve come together,” he said. “Barefoot in the Park tells us that opposites do attract; they do fight. They find that seed of love planted deep in their hearts. They make a new life together work in spite of the obstacles. Is this not the hope of everyone setting out on a life together?” Rosebud Theatre veterans David Snider and Marie Russell lead this comic collective with their incredibly strong characterizations of Velasco and Ethel respectively. Russell is a long time fan-favourite last seen as Rachel Lynd in Anne of Green Gables. “Whether you have been married for 6 months or 60 years, you will be able to relate to this play,” says Snider. “It’s incredibly funny, and I’m sure people will see a little bit of themselves in the characters on stage.”

Inmate gets 15 extra days for distracting sniffer dog Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A dog-loving inmate has another 15 days behind bars to think about distracting a canine unit at the Drumheller Institution. Alan Knapcyzk appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, March 8. He pleaded guilty to obstructing a peace officer in the execution of duty. On October 30 of last year, a corrections officer with a sniffer dog was at the Drumheller Institution. Knapczyk interfered with the investigation by distracting the dog, calling “here boy.” He was asked to stop, but he continued to call the dog. Knapczyk was given a 15 day sentence to be served concurrently to his existing sentence.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Dragons face Bandits in round two of AJHL playos Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Dragons’ foe for the second round of the AJHL playos was made oďŹƒcial on Tuesday night when the Okotoks Oilers beat the Olds Grizzlys in game ďŹ ve of their series. The Oilers victory means they will take on the Camrose Kodiaks and the Dragons will face the number one Junior A team in Canada; the Brooks Bandits. The Dragons head to Brooks tonight for game one and stay overnight for game two. Game three will be held Monday, March 18, at the Drumheller Memorial Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Dragons have a tough series ahead of them. In six meetings between the two teams

in the regular season, the Bandits won all six. The Bandits went 53-43 on the season, earning 289 goals with only 113 against. They handily took ďŹ rst place in the AJHL southern division and had a break for the ďŹ rst round of playos. To be successful against the Bandits, the Dragons will have to control the number of penalties they receive. The Dragons’ ďŹ rst round victory against the Eagles was aided by some remarkable penalty killing, especially in several 5 on 3 situations. However, the Dragons can’t aord to give the Bandits those chances. To give the Dragons some added incentive to win, Mayor Terry Yemen and Brooks Mayor Martin Shields have agreed to a jersey swap should

Mayor Terry Yemen has Dragons fever and has made a wager with the mayor of Brooks. Should the Dragons win the series, the mayor of Brooks will have to don a Dragons jersey. inSide photo by Michael James

their respective team lose. “The gauntlet has been thrown down. Mayor Shields has agreed to wear a Dragons Jersey and make a declaration that Drumheller is the best town in Al-

berta when the Drumheller Dragons defeat the Brooks Bandits in this next round of the playos. If, by chance, Brooks were to win, I will be required to do the same, said Mayor Yemen.

DrumStix take second place at home tournament The Drumheller Memorial Arena was filled with players from across central Alberta this weekend as the Drumheller women’s hockey team, the DrumStix, hosted their annual tournament. The DrumStix went 2-1 in round robin play and earned a spot in the final game of their pool. In a close game, the DrumStix lost 3-1 to the Calgary Blue Hares. The DrumStix also had a raffle table and silent

auction to help raise money to pay for ice and tournament expenses for the team. The DrumStix are heading to Beiseker on March 23 and Airdrie on April 6 for their last two tournaments before they hang up their skates for the season. inSide photo by Michael James
