Working out credited for rehab from crippling disorder Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

It has been a long road back to normal for a Drumheller man, and he credits a workout regime helping him get back. Neil Clark is known throughout the valley as a musician and an agronomist. About two years ago like a bolt of lightning, he became ill. In August of 2011, he was touched by GuillainBarré Syndrome (GBS). This is a disorder where the immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. “It basically is by some fluke of genetic coding, antibodies attacking your nervous system, he explains. “I lost all my ability to walk, and everything like breathing was limited. In my arms, the feeling was gone.” He describes it as if his muscles were not hooked up. “A simple analogy would be that every virus you can get has a bar code on it and your antibodies recognizes that bar code and fight the virus. But every now and again that bar code on the virus is pretty close orum de F er s read Our ... e writ

Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor; These figures are taken from the Town of Drumheller Water Rate Report for 2012 and invoices for November 2012. Prices do not include the 5% increase for 2013. to your nerves.” He said in Calgary, doctors see about one case every month. The onset was sudden and dramatic. His movement was severely limited and his breathing was down to around 30 per cent. It took about four and half months before he was let out of the hospital, and he had a long road of rehabilitation ahead at the Foothill Hospital. Just shy of 60, Clark found himself learning to walk again. By the time he returned to Drumheller, his muscle tone was depleted. He began rehabilitation at Everybody’s Gym in Drumheller. “I was using a walker by the time I came to the gym the first time,” said Clark. He explains gym owner Judy McIlroy was able to help with a rehabilitation program to get his life back on track. “We worked on a lot of balance stuff. My strength just kind of atrophied. It was like my muscles weren’t hooked up, there was no control. As the nerves heal a little bit, they get a bit of a sig-

nal.” It was a unique program put together by McIlroy explains Clark. Rather than straight weight training, much of the work was done with exercise balls for him to work on not only the main muscles, but also the supporting muscles ,to help him with balance and coordination. Today he is still working out at least twice a week and continues to improve. He has also begun yoga. “I needed coaching, and knew if I went to Everybody’s Gym, I could get it because I have never been a weight lifter or anything,” he said. “I just needed the right kind of exercise, I didn’t need to be Superman, I just needed to get everything working again.” Professionally he is back on track and working. His musical abilities are coming back as well. When he was in the hospital, someone brought his guitar for him but he could hardly lift it. Today he is back with friends on stage hosting an open jam each weekend at the East Coulee Hotel.

was $1.36 cm3 with no fixed charge, $2.86 cm3 with fixed charges. The fixed or fairy tale charges, as I call them, were 52% of my total bill. The average group 1 bill would be 17cm3 X $1.36 = $24.48 + $10.50 fairy tale charges = $34.98 for water, or $34.98 divided by 17 = $2.06 cm3. The fairy tale charges = 33% of the total bill for the average customer. The Fed. Institution group 3 rate was $1.36 cm3 and fairy tale charges of 0.042%. It is great to see the Institution paying the same per cm3 rate as the rest of us. Starland pays $1.36 cm3 and no fairy tale fees. A loss of $0.17 per cm3.

Kneehill County pays $1.40 cm3 and no fairy tale fees. A loss of $0.13 cm3. KRWSC pays $1.08 cm3 and no fairy tale fees. A loss of $0.45 cm3. You may wonder how we can sell water at a loss. That is what the fairy tale fees are for. There was an article in the January 8 Calgary Herald that said the Buffalo Hills plan included provision for 1700 units to use water from Drumheller. That alone would add $155,700.00 per year to the loss that Drumheller has to make up, and does not include other losses incurred by the KRWSC contract.

FCSS considers creation of Drumheller Boys and Girls Club

Boyd Financial supports Drumheller Football

Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Work has begun to bring one of the world’s most widespread youth programs to Drumheller. Drumheller Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is working with the Boys and Girls Club of Canada to bring the program here. “FCSS has been working with the Boys and Girls Club of Canada, especially the one in Airdrie, to identify potential programming in Drumheller. We’ve been looking at what they do in other communities to get an idea of what is possible here,” said Drumheller FCSS coordinator Cathy Smoliak. At the moment, FCSS is hoping to receive feedback from community members as to what they would like to see in a Drumheller Boys and Girls Club. “We’d like to have feedback from individuals and youth on programming and events. What would they like to see? We’re willing to explore what we can do at this point,” said Smoliak.

Boyd Financial Services has stepped up to support the Titans Football Program and has recently donated $1,000 to the program. Bob Boyd has had two sons, Shawn and Brock, play for the Titans and says it is a fantastic organization. Bob, left, presents a cheque for $1,000 to Mike Ostergard of Titans Football.

The Drumheller Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is working with the Boys and Girls Club of Canada to bring the program here. Those wishing to learn more or offer feedback are encouraged to call Cathy Smoliak, left, or Jeannie Lutz, Community Services Coordinator.

“They had some great leadership programs that can be developed in any community. The great thing about them is they’re not delivered in any specific format to kids. The children and youth help develop it based on their interests.” The goal of such a program would be to provide a safe, supportive place for youth to experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop competence and skills for life. It is hoped a Boys and Girls Club would fill a perceived gap in youth

programs in Drumheller. “There is a need for more youth programming. We’re exploring that further, so we can implement programs of interest to our youth,” said Smoliak. Some suggestions already received include summer camps, day camps for holidays, and events during professional development days. Those wishing to learn more or offer feedback are encouraged to call Smoliak at 403-823-1315 or Jeannie Lutz, Community Services Coordinator, at 403-823-1365.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, some conflicting signals from a friend this week might seem like trouble is ahead. But it’s more likely that your perception of the situation is a little off. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, your imagination has a life of its own this week. You may be thinking of living on the edge a little bit in the next few days but don’t overdo it.

Sudoku

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, avoid a deep discussion about your feelings with someone at work this week. Now is not the time or the place to share anything personal, so keep it professional.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, don’t get sidetracked this week because coworkers are expecting your full attention and effort at the office. You may need to juggle a few responsibilities for the time being.

Answers Last Week's Crossword

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, make sure you comments are not misinterpreted this week. Someone might take something the wrong way, so choose your words carefully.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, channel your romantic feelings into action this week. Act sooner rather than later and make the most of your emotions while they’re strong. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, learn from the past but do not allow letdowns from the past to dictate your future. There is no guarantee that things will be repeated. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, write things down this week before you say them to be sure you have everything correct. This will help you when you need to make an important announcement. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you may feel like escaping to a fantasy world, but that does not mean the pressing matters will simply disappear. A vacation may recharge your batteries. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 You are in much better shape than you think you are, Pisces. So don’t be too hard on yourself this week. It is alright to put your feet up.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you may be feeling great physically, but there is a nagging problem that you simply cannot identify. Give it time and it will come to the surface.

Bantam Raptors finish second in league finals The Drumheller Bantam Raptors lost 5-3 in the league final hockey game against the Canmore Eagles in game two of a best-ofthree series on Saturday afternoon in the Drumheller Memorial Arena. The Eagles took an early lead scoring two points in the first period but the Raptors fought back in period two, evening up the score. The Raptors played a close game until the Eagles bagged three more points in the third period crowning them this year’s tier 3 league champions. inSide photo by Johann Kuschke

Senior girls Dynos place fifth at zones Michael James | inSide Drumheller

After earning a spot at zones and being declared regional champions, the DVSS senior girls Dynos’ basketball season has come to a close. On the weekend of March 9, the DVSS senior girls Dynos travelled to Three Hills to vie for the title of zone champions and a spot at provincials. The team earned fifth place at the tournament, with a 2-1 record overall. Unfortunately, a loss in their first game of the tournament, against Carstairs, took the Dynos out of the running for provincials. The loss was especially tough, because it means the basketball season has ended for the team. “Unfortunately the girls season is now over but they ended the season playing the best they have all year,” said head coach Jennifer Raugust. “I told them champions have to play with composure and focus. You can’t expect to win if

you let your opponent in your head and rattle you, and the girls didn’t.” In the end, it was a few missed shots that were the difference in the Dynos first game. The team will go through a large change in the lineup for next season. Most of the current roster is made up of Grade 12 players, meaning an entirely new team next year. “I am a very proud coach! I couldn’t have

asked for a better group of girls and I am sad the year is over. I will definitely miss the Grade 12 ladies,” said Raugust. Raugust, who began her coaching career with the Dynos this season, hopes to be back to mould the next incarnation of the senior girls team. “I really enjoyed my first year coaching and I am hopeful I will be asked back to coach next year,” said Raugust.

for the boys. They managed a 5-5 tie against Okotoks. The heart and hustle went to Kyle Bosch. The three games played in the round-

robin of two wins and a tie gave the Raptors a spot in the ďŹ nal. They had to play Indus again and the Raptors prevailed with an 8-2 victory. The Raptors received the tournament banner which will be proudly hung in the Drumheller arena rafters for all to see. Coach Mark Coultes says all of the players deserved the heart and hustle awards and that he was proud of his team throughout the year. It was a great way to end the season.

Tanner Borowicz, left, and Bailey Faubion were standouts on the basketball court this season playing for St. Anthony’s School. They were both selected for the South Central All Star game and represented the east. The girl’s team was in a close battle but ended up losing by two points. Despite this, Faubion says it was an honour to be selected and a great way to end her six years of basketball. The boy’s side fared better and won by 20 points. photo submitted
