Two local pub managers say they find current Alberta liquor laws work fine for closing time. Talk came about on social media and in the news about relaxing liquor laws after the province allowed establishments to open early for the Olympic gold medal hockey game between Canada and Sweden on Sunday, February 23. “It was excellent, everybody had a great time - we had a full house,” said Yavis Res-
taurant and Bar manager Steve Wannstrom. He said the current law has bars shut down sales at 2 a.m. and patrons must be finished drinking and out of the bar by 3 a.m. He said the current closing time is fine the way it is. “Until they ask for our opinion or bring something forward,” Wannstrom said, Vintage Pub & Grill manager Kenny Singh said he’s discussed a later closing time with his friends and colleagues in the bar and liquor businesses. “It doesn’t make
sense bars shutting and drunk people leaving at 4 or 5 a.m. and at the same time other people are going to work.” Singh’s said it might work in the bigger cities, but not in smaller towns where they’re closed around midnight on a weekday. Drumheller Fire Chief Bill Bachynski wants to remind residents to check and change the batteries in their home detectors when they move their clocks forward this weekend. Bachynski said often people forget to check the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, so this is a good way to be diligent. Clocks are turned forward one hour to start Daylight Savings Time this Sunday, March 9 at 2 a.m.

Encana aďŹƒrms commitment to Tyrrell Science Camps The partnership between Encana and The Royal Tyrrell Museum in delivering Science Camp is moving into its ninth season. Vice president, Operations Services for Encana Vineeta Maguire was at the Royal Tyrrell Museum on Wednesday, March 5, to present the museum with a $75,000 installment of its most recent threeyear commitment, totaling $250,000. “Our focus is on the community we operate in and making it real for all of us is part of Encana’s values,â€? said Maguire. Of the 10 years the science camp has been in existence, Encana has been with them for nine of those seasons, and each summer about 250 youth participate in the possibly the only residential palaeontology camp. What makes the camp special is the hands on component.
Morgan Syvertsen, who operates the camps, says this year the students will be participating in real science from ďŹ eldwork to lab work. “This year our older kids will be going to two quarries and actually work the quarry and assist collecting stu and hauling it out. They will bring it back here and wash it and do everything from ďŹ nding it in the ground, right to placing it on the scientist’s desk,â€? said Syvertsen.

ARTISTS SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERISM = VOLUNTEERS SUPPORTING ARTISTS! The FCSS Coordinator from the Town of Drumheller is trying to coordinate a Silent Auction to recruit new volunteers for the community. The idea is to try and find artists who would be willing to donate a piece of their art to a community silent auction. The purpose of the silent auction is to recruit new volunteers and / or extend current Volunteers’ hours of volunteering. These individuals would bid a number of volunteer hours in order to receive that actual piece of art. As a silent auction the highest bidder (most hours offered for volunteerism) would win the art. We would encourage youth to submit both their art and their time as well. The Vision for this auction is to have the art displayed for the length of the auction in the Badlands Community Facility Art Gallery, thereby providing the artist with a free showing of their work. by Suzanne Hayes and Loretta Nyhan Our book club finally got back together in February after a break since Christmas. We had the opportunity to read several books, but the one discussed was “I’ll Be Seeing You� by Suzanne Hayes and Loretta Nyhan. This is a wonderful story of friendship and much more. Two ladies from different backgrounds, living in different parts of the U.S., begin a correspondence with the only common thread they have being the men they love are away fighting in the war. Their letters are what keep them going, offering comfort, advice, humor and a love which supports them in their battles against loneliness and the uncertainty of day to day life.
We have an understanding of the fears and need of companionship faced by those left at home during the war years. The book shows the reality of rationing and the ingenuity required to make recipes work during that time. We are given a taste of every aspect of life by reading the heartfelt letters exchanged. The story takes place during W.W. 2. The dedication these ladies have to their correspondence reminds me of our frequent exchanges through emails and Facebook friendships. Very close bonds have been made between people just as these two ladies’ friendship was formed back in the 1940’s. I would recommend this book as a very good read!

Where did you move from? I was born in Taber, lived there until I was 8 years old. What do you miss about Taber? Cornfest at the end of summer. Lots of corn, lots of rides - like a fair. What do you enjoy the most about living here? It’s not the cold winter, that’s for sure! The people. Just how friendly everybody is. What do you do in your spare time? I like playing basketball. I’m helping coach the Junior A (grade 7 through 9) Boys Basketball at DVSS. What made you think of coaching? I always looked up to my coaches through junior high and high school and I wanted to give back like they did. Any other interests? Snowboarding in the Banff/Canmore area. Once
a month maybe, if I’m lucky. Volunteer firefighter (joined May 1). My Dad’s on the team. It’s been good. Any unexpected event that changed your life? Probably, but I can’t put my finger on it right now. How often do you use Facebook? I do maybe six hours a week to keep in touch with everybody. Do you have a favourite meal? Chicken cordon bleu (Mom’s house - she’s the best cook for it.) If you were stranded on an island, what crate do you want to wash ashore? It would have to be Gibson’s Whisky. It would keep you sane. Where would you like to travel? Australia would be a dream place to travel. My parents went there and told me about it - they said it’s incredible. Any helpful tips for tax filers? Get everything in on time. Do you have a favourite saying? Do work (from a t.v. show called Rob and Big).

The Drumheller and District Music Festival, Drumheller’s longest running cultural event is coming up March 18-28. Students will appear in front of word class performers and coaches in their field to be adjudicated. Inside Drumheller and The Drumheller Mail will be featuring profiles of the adjudicators leading up to the festival. MIRIAM MAHOOD is a RCM & MDP Senior Examiner who examines throughout Canada & the USA. She has adjudicated extensively for the Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia Music Festival Associations, and has been employed by such institutions as Alberta College, The Banff Centre, Universities of Alberta & Manitoba, Western Board of Music, & Winnipeg Bible College. Ms. Mahood is a graduate of the Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria (Konzertdiplom), Universities of Alberta & Saskatchewan (M. Mus. & B. Mus. respectively), & holds an ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Music, & an AMUS & LMUS from the Western Board of Music. For many years she was the Scholarship Chair, & served on the Ball Committee of the Johann Strauss Foundation. Ms. Mahood has given concerts in Austria, Germany, Bangladesh, as well as in Canada & the USA. Aside from her responsibilities as Organist & Choir Director at St. Georges Anglican, Ms. Mahood runs a successful piano studio, Strathearn Music Studios, which she founded in 2006. Her hobbies are hiking, languages, & travel. JIM DOBBIN: Jim has a wealth of experience as a theatre practitioner, teacher, examiner and adjudicator. Since graduating with an MFA in directing from the University of Calgary, Jim has been teaching speech arts and drama at Mount Royal University in Calgary where he is cofounder and director of the Young Shakespeare Company. Jim also teaches theatre arts with the University of Lethbridge, Calgary Campus. He has worked at Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects and Theatre Junction in Calgary. Recently he co-founded Worthy Words Theatre, which creates plays through an inventive fusion of poetry, music, and theatre. The current production, Rhyme Rustler, in which he plays the role of Robert Service, toured Canada for the past several years.

The NGC Peewee Raptors met Medicine Hat on their ďŹ rst play o game against the team Sunday, March 3, and came away victorious with a 3-2 win. NGC now leads the series 1-0. NGC Goalie Cort Castonguay explains “If we win the next game, we move on to the ďŹ nals for the banner.â€? “I’ll be playing in that game.â€? Castonguay said his last four years of hockey he hasn’t won more than three league games through the season, so this is a big accomplishment for him. The season’s been good, and he’s had a lot of fun, he adds.

Spring is just around the corner, and that means minor hockey is coming to a close. Looking back on the season, Freson Bros. Tykes coach Dennis Olsen has watched his players progress well over this past hockey season. “Our team has come a long way this season, and all the kids have improved greatly on their skating and puck battle skills - it’s a lot of fun to see.â€? The Tykes game against Beiseker March 1 was cancelled due to the cold weather, but they played their game with Standard on Sunday, March 2. “The Standard game was the best our kids have played all year. We came out with a great win. They played hard and went to the net a lot, which resulted in a multiple goal game for three of the kids and the ďŹ rst goal of the season for another,â€? said Olsen. The Tykes hosted Bassano for an exhibition game at the Drumheller Memorial Arena Saturday, February 23. “They had a much older team than us, and we came up short in the end,â€? said Olsen.
He said a highlight of the game was their only goal, which was scored in the ďŹ rst 25 seconds of the game by Corbin Moulton, from a face o win by Cooper Olsen. Another highlight for the coach was the strong defensive play of Seth Leavitt and Paxton Olsen. “Seth and Paxton both are becoming very solid defencemen at such a young age,â€? he explained. The Tykes play Delia for their ďŹ nal game on March 7. The Boston Pizza/Western Chev Bantams ďŹ nished their playo games with Oyen over the March 1 weekend. BP lost their third of three games to Oyen by a score of 4 to 3 in double over-time. BP had won their second game against Oyen 5-4, but lost their ďŹ rst game on February 22. Oyen won with a score of 6-2, with Tanner Boutin and Shane Telford both scoring in the third period for the BP/Western Chev Bantams. Coach Coleman Hodgson says they may try to schedule some exhibition games to keep playing until the Provincials later this month. BP/Western Chev team hosts the Bantam D Provincials March 13 to 16 at Drumheller Memorial Arena.
