Affordable apartment complex opens Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller
A new development providing affordable housing aimed at AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) recipients has opened in Drumheller and it appears the demand for such a facility in the community is strong. The Norwood apartment complex has opened on 1st Street East in downtown Drumheller, across from the Badlands Historical Museum. The 15-unit complex opened at the beginning of March, and already 10 units have been filled. There’s a lot of demand for this kind of place,” said Colin Lowden of Studios Alberta, which also owns similar properties in Ponoka and Olds. The bachelor suites are a modest 325 square feet, and are fully contained apartments. There are two handicapped accessible units

Search is on for Direct Energy Volunteer Citizen of the Year Pascale Taylor | Inside Drumheller Direct Energy and the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) are inviting applications from Albertans for the 2010 Volunteer Citizen of the Year award. The award is part of a program designed to recognize the significant efforts of volunteers who contribute to make their communities a better place. “We’re looking forward to once again recognizing individuals who work hard to make our communities great places to live,” said AWNA President George Brown. “The selfless actions of past winners and many of the other nominees often go unrewarded. This program is designed to showcase appreciation for their efforts. The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award is a great opportunity to recognize invaluable volunteers

that are vacant. Each unit has its own outside entrance that opens onto a courtyard. Each tenant will have control of their general utilities and are responsible for all utilities with the exception of water, which is included in the rent. Joan McGhee is managing the property. It is located in downtown Drumheller, and in walking distance to many amenities. The rent is affordable for each unit, and the project was made possible through the Canada-Alberta Affordable Housing Agreement. Lowden says no municipal funding was used in the project, and none was sought. The goal of Studios Alberta is to provide affordable housing primarily, but not exclusively for AISH recipients. Lowden says in Drumheller there are about 160 people receiving AISH; about 40 percent have mental illness, 40 per cent have a physical illness

The award winner will receive: • $1,000 cash prize; • $5,000 cash grant to the winner’s organization/cause of choice in their respective community; • recognition of their achievement through a commemorative award, article and photo to be published in AWNA newspapers across Alberta; • $1,000 cash grant to four semi-finalists’ organization/ cause of choice in their respective communities; and • special recognition of the four semi-finalists. The award is open to residents within a community served by an AWNA member newspaper.
Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by another individual or a group. The nomination should include an account in a maximum of 750 words of the specific contribution an individual or group has made to the local community through improving the quality of life for fellow residents. They should also profile the nominee’s organization or cause of choice to receive the $5,000 cash grant and how the donation
will be used. Nominations must be submitted by May 7, 2010 by post to Maurizia Hinse, AWNA, 3228 Parsons Road, Edmonton, T6N 1M2 or by fax to 780-438-8356. A selection committee, formed of two representatives from the AWNA and two appointed by Direct Energy, will review award applications and select the finalists and winning individual or group.

Kaleidoscope Theatre puts on thought provoking play Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller
Addictions can still be a taboo subject, maybe more so when they affect women. “Like Bees to Honey” is a thought provoking play about drug and alcohol addiction among women, and the Kaleidoscope Theatre production of this play will take the audience on a journey people will
paid to look after. And finally Kiesha, played by Courtney Morse, who is having a great time with her boyfriend, always high. The only male actor, Kelly Bertsch, plays a variety of supporting roles which help place some of the scenes. At first, their tales seem innocent enough, but as they make excuses for their addictions, their stories seem to mix into one. The audience witnesses the downward spiral their lives start to take and an uneasy feeling sets in as the brutal reality of addictions is laid bare again. Each actor makes their character so real that the audience will feel a great sensitivity towards the women, but also a sense of helplessness, as they are silent witnesses to these women’s despair. When reality comes crashing in for each of the characters, the audience will feel a sense of relief as the women attempt to pull themselves out of the wreckage their lives have become. Spectators may be left wondering whether Rita, despite her very powerful wake up call, can accept reality without alcohol. Information regarding alcohol and drugs addiction recovery will be available from a stand after the show. This production is playing at the Navy League Building, with the last show on Saturday, March 20.

From the very beginning, the audience is introduced to the brutal reality of alcohol abuse as they witness a traumatic scene when a young drunk girl, played by Jenn Eskeland, is thrown out of a car and verbally abused by a dissatisfied “customer.” How did she get there? Then, one by one, five women, from very different backgrounds and varied ages, start to recount their lives. Their tales will have the audience captivated. Some time ago I believe I wrote about how I believe Stephen Harper is a political genius. Since that time, he has done nothing to dispel that belief. There are those who would consider me biased, in that I espouse a conservative philosophy and ideology. Neither of these however has any bearing on Mr. Harper’s doings. Here is a man who took two parties, the first of which regarded the other with total disdain, and the second holding the first in suspicion, with no love lost between either, and merged them. He then took that merged entity into an election against a deeply entrenched Liberal party, winning a minority government. He has held that minority longer than anyone could have predicted. When faced with a non-confidence vote in the house of Commons, and the real and present danger of an NDP/Liberal/Bloc coalition, he did something none of the leaders of those parties had ever considered. He went to the Governor General and asked that Parliament be shut down. The Governor General granted his request, leaving the leaders of the coalition to the wrath of the electorate and their own egos. After the coalition had withered on the vine, and the danger had passed, Parliament was called back, with Harper and his minority stronger than ever. Along comes a financial and economic train wreck, costing billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs. Almost every sector of the economy pleads for the government to do something. The Opposition parties know that something must be done, money must be spent to support the economy and protect jobs. Harper and the conservatives put together an “economic stimulus package” worth billions, putting the government budget into a deficit position. The deficit grows, as the hordes must be placated by ever more spending. As if that weren’t enough, a scandal erupts over Canadian forces in Afghanistan accused of handing over Taliban prisoners to the Afghan army, where it’s presumed they are mistreated. There are cries of a cover-up and for an investigation. Trusting his military advisers, and looking to escape the heat, Harper again pulls the plug, just in time for the Olympics. Upon the return of Parliament, after a triumphant, uplifting, feel-good Olympic Games, the government brings forth a throne speech followed by a new budget. At some time in the proceedings it’s announced that there will be a review of the national anthem, with an eye toward making it gender neutral, or hermaphroditic. This of course is merely a diversionary tactic. The budget didn’t contain much in the way of lowering the deficit, and so something was needed to draw attention away from that fact. Announcing that you may change the words to the national anthem proved to be just such a diversion. The phones rang off the hook, letters and editorials abounded. Very few said anything about the budget. One day later, the PMO reversed its’ position, so fast that back up lights and a warning beeper wouldn’t have had time to come on. The proposed review and its’ quick reversal had served its purpose. The budget was not the headline, but the national anthem instead. I did say I thought he was a political genius. Last Sunday was the birthday of a very old friend of mine. In this case the word “old” is very literal, as Albert celebrated his 101st birthday. I missed the day, but he has since forgiven me, just so long as I don’t let it happen again. Optimistic ain’t he? 11s

We are on a roll now! Not just one, but TWO books that my book club is in complete agreement in favor of both. The first, appreciated by all, is Still Alice by Lisa Genova. As much as we all enjoyed the book, we were equally disturbed by it. The story of a woman in her 50’s having early onset Alzheimer’s is a scary concept for all. This character happens to be a Harvard professor who lectures at conferences and works in the field of linguistics each day. The story is told through her eyes on a day-to-day basis as the disease creeps up on her and manifests itself. How her family members deal with her situation is a key part of the story which covers two years in time. The author is a PhD in neuroscience which keeps the story “real” and acceptable. In our discussion, everyone had stories to tell of loved ones for which the book shed a light on their individual experiences. There were also personal accounts of forgetfulness giving us that moment to understand the fear this disease can pass on. Our second book was The Book of Unholy Mischief by Elle Newmark. I assumed I would be the only one to like it because it caused me to reflect on The Book of Red - in which I was in the minority for its preference last year. Surprisingly, everyone truly liked this story. The two main characters are the dog’s chef and his apprentice, the narrator, who is a former street urchin. They grow on you as the story weaves its way through Venice in the year 1498. While a mysterious, magical book is the focus, you can’t help but feel magically entangled in the atmosphere created through the narrative and colorful characters. A couple favorite items some of us happen to share are Venice and cooking, which may have been the original reason for choosing this book. These two books, being of entirely different nature, made for an interesting blend of reading this 11m month.

All the snow is quickly turning to water as another season ends at the Drumheller Valley Ski Hill, and by most indications, it was a good season for the valley’s winter recreation institution. Manager of the ski hill, Zrinko Amerl, describes the year as a break even season. That said, the hill met its goals. “We started later than we wanted to, but the goal this year was to provide a consistent product,” said Amerl. “When we were open we had good snow, the runs were well maintained and there were no issues with the lift, or the cat.” “Now, next year we are going to expand.” In some ways, signs of expansion have already begun. With an arsenal of seven snow guns and a new second lift on the way, considerable investment into the hill is setting up continued expansion. Before the snow flies again however, there are plans to add more activity to the hill. This summer a number of endeavours are planned for the hill including hiking, mountain biking and even horseback riding. Amerl says the hill has developed about two hours of bike trails, but will be adding more with
the help of inmate labour from the Drumheller Institution. He hopes to have up to 18 hours of trails available on the hill for all levels of riding skill. There will also be interpretive hiking trails that will explore the natural landscape and the impressive vistas of the valley. The hill will run either a shuttle service or the lift to transport walkers and bikers to the summit, depending on numbers. “The view is what we have to sell in the Badlands,” said Amerl. A dding attractions at the hills will spin off to other business and attractions in the valley. The first plateau on the ski hill will serve as a base for many of the activities including light camping. This will allow cyclists to make it more than just a day trip, allow them a place to tent for the evening and continue to explore the trails. The site will allow small groups to camp. The plateau will also be the base for horse riding trails. He says they will start with a small stable to try out the initiative. While they will not be able to operate out of the lodge, Amerl says they are planning to open a teahouse at the top of the lift with full licensed food services.
