The gloves are off, and on the auction block The mittens that adorned the Worlds' Largest Dinosaur have come down, and will soon be on the auction block. They will be auctioned off on eBay to support the Badlands Community Facility. It appears the lure of owning the mitts may have been too much for someone. The Drumheller Minor Hockey Association has generously committed $75,000 over the next five years to the Badlands Community Facility. The announcement was made on Wednesday, March 3 in the Town of Drumheller Council Chambers. As Minor Hockey is a major user of the facility, president Linda Lacher said it’s fitting they are contributors. There are about 180 participants in Drumheller Minor Hockey. “Drumheller has a very high demand for ice time,” said Lacher. “The arena is used by Minor Hockey, the Dragons, fun league and figure skating. The different components will help all organizations with game times, practice times and activities such as dry land training.” This season, Drumheller Minor Hockey is hosting the Bantam B Division provincial tournament, March 19-21. Shallyn Schinnour, special event coordinator for Drumheller Minor Hockey, feels having the

cially supported the Badlands Community Facility.” Hall says they have just started their campaign and are contacting 10-15 organizations a week to meet their target of $12 million. So far, they have raised about $1.7 million. Site preparation work is already completed. The initial facility will include a new public library, a field house, running track, fit-

ness centre and meeting facilities, followed by a second arena and curling facilities, as funding becomes available. Lacher hopes the Minor Hockey donation will inspire more support. “We hope the other user groups can step up and show support for the facility,” she said.

Badlands Community Facility will allow them to host more of these kinds of events, especially with components such as a banquet facility. Attracting these kind of events are a boon economically for the Town of Drumheller. For this tournament, organizers needed to block 150 hotel rooms alone. The donation of $75,000 is over five years. Lacher says the funds will not come from registrations. It will come from concession revenue as well as other fundraising endeavours. They have earmarked the funding to be directed towards the second ice sheet project. Chair of the Badlands Community Facility Fundraising Committee, Jeff Hall, is appreciative of the donation for the facility. “It’s fantastic when we get money from any source, but for Drumheller Minor Hockey to step forward and show their commitment is great,” said Hall. “Minor Hockey realizes the importance of being behind a project like this, and we are very happy they have finan-

The gloves are off, and now there may be some friendly fisticuffs as to who will claim ownership of the gargantuan gloves. Sliding a bright red pair of mittens onto the claws of the World’s Largest Dinosaur put Drumheller on the map as part of its Olympic Torch Celebrations. On Tuesday night, the Drumheller Fire Department removed the mittens.

Now the gloves will be on the auction block in support of the Badlands Community Facility. Tara Semchuk, of Bit’s and Pieces, constructed the mittens that helped kick off the National Red Mitten Campaign. She confirms that the giant red mittens will be listed on eBay to be sold to the highest bidder. “We chose the community facility because it is sports related,” said Semchuk. She explains they were look-

ing at how best to support the sports community in the spirit of the Olympics, and came to the conclusion the recreation facility would be almost universal in supporting a number of different groups. “How do you pick one sporting group over the others? The community facility will be used by all groups in town,” said Semchuk. They have no idea what the mittens will fetch, but one indi-

cation revealed when the mittens came down, demonstrates they may be a hot commodity. The Fire department found a sizable barbed fishing lure lodged in the mitten, giving the appearance that someone may have already been trying to hook themselves a prize. The mittens are being cleaned and prepared, and they hope to have them listed by next week. The mittens are 3 metres long and 1.8 metres wide.

rEvolve plays Knox United Church Drumheller residents are invited on a musical journey as rEvolve is set to play the Knox United Church on Wednesday, March 10. The band, featuring Chris Giffen, Josh McHan and Gord Oaks are on tour through Alberta and will be stopping in Drumheller. According to their website rEvolve means to re-evolve. “Evolution in terms of life energy being re-created, evolving out of the old and becoming new. It means to build on and evolve the work of those who came before us, those who have inspired us, educated us and whose ‘shoulders we stand upon.’ rEvolve also suggests the word ‘revolution’ which may be taken as the development of a centre of gravity around which to orbit. A focal point where we define, clarify and co-create our life paths.” All three members listed blend different musical styles and bring a varied repertoire that includes jazz, gospel, A capella vocal and prayer groove. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Admission is a free will offering to the Mission and Service Fund. For more information on the Drumheller show, call 403-823-2366.

Has reading a book ever changed your life? If yes, which one? I’m currently reading the book of Proverbs. It’s really assisting me in looking at situations in a different way and hopefully it makes me an all around better person. If you could choose one super power, which would it be and why? Teleport. So I could go when I want where I want. Any unusual habits? I never eat the last bite of any sandwiches. If you found a $100 bill what would you do? Give it to a bum on the street. Or tip the person who’d made my latte that day. If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do? To the airport I go! What’s on your playlist? Teagan and Sara, pheonix, death cab for a cutie are my favs right now. If you could be Prime Minister for one day what would you do? I’d never want to be Prime Minister. Politics are not my forte! Words to live by? Keep fit and have fun! Body break :)

Sabres victorious in Trochu Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Anthony Merkel had a season high 43 points as the St. Anthony’s Sabres trounced Trochu Valley School 87-40. The Sabres senior boys basketball team were in Trochu to take on the Blue Jays on Wednesday, March 3. The team never looked back in their victory, putting them back on track after a close tournament loss in Banff on the previous weekend. Defense was key to the Sabres’ win. They set a goal of only allowing 10 points per quarter, and achieved it. On offense, the Sabres were able to effectively use their size to score at will.

Friday, March 5, 2010 - 7

Merkels’ 43 points was just a bucket shy of beating the school’s 44 points in a single game record. Brandon Gruber was effective off the dribble, driving for 17 points, and Josh Mohan popped in 10. With the defense starting to click, the team needs to continue fine-tuning other aspects of their game including limiting turnovers, tougher on the rebounds and better shooting. Wednesday night’s game now puts the Sabres at a 16-5 overall record as they prepare for zones. Next Wednesday, March 10, they will meet the DCHS Dynos, before hitting the court on Friday, March 12 when the Sabres host the zone playoffs.

Dynos upset in league final Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The DCHS Senior boys Dynos basketball team were upset by the Acme Redmen in the league final on Wednesday night. The Dynos have been perfect in league play, and have only suffered one loss all season to Crescent Heights of Medicine Hat, the top ranked 3A team in the province, in tournament play. The Dynos were hoping to capture their third straight league banner at home on March 3, but the Redmen had different plans. DCHS coach, Jeff Messom, gives credit where credit is due. He said Acme rebounded well and were able to make timely

shots, while the Dynos were sluggish on defensive rotations and made critical turnovers throughout the game. The Dynos showed signs of life in the fourth quarter, and were able to cut the lead to just two points, however seven consecutive turnovers cost the Dynos any chance of recovering. The Redmen won 80-70.

This is not the end of the road for the Dynos. Despite the league loss, the Dynos are still in the hunt. Zone playoffs are coming up shortly, and they have designs on the provincials. The loss may affect their tournament seeding down the stretch as the Dynos have been ranked as the top 2A team for much of the season.

The book discussed at my book club for February was Septembers of Shiraz by Dalia Sofer. It is quite a disturbing story but well-liked by all who read it. It Lori Stefanishion is well-writen and interesting, knowing it depicts life as it was in inSide Drumheller Tehran in 1981, shortly after the revolution. Book Columnist The central character is a 60 year old wealthy, Jewish businessman who is arrested at the start of the story. His year in prison, torture and interrogation keeps the reader concerned about his fate. Meanwhile, his wife and young daughter are at home, living in fear and constant worry as they struggle to cope. A sub-plot tells of his son’s life in New York where he is studying and no longer living an afÁuent lifestyle. Sofer, the author, actually Áed from Iran to the U.S. at age ten with her family. Her father had been imprisoned and she relates the horrors to her story. This is a poignant story and although a work of Àction, it reminds us of how blessed our lives are here in Canada.

Dragons’ awards banquet celebrates season Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

Their season may have been described as tumultuous, but the Dragons year end banquet, which took place on Friday, February 26, reminded all of the great sportsmanship and dedication the team displayed this season, as well as the dedication from volunteers, parents and fans. Three Dragons were rewarded with scholarships from RBC, The Jeff Hendricks Memorial and The Stewy Stewart Memorial Trophy. It was a memorable evening for young fan Joseph Faubion who was presented with Volunteer of the Year award. Joseph also presented his favourite Dragon, Scott Kennedy, with the Chinook Fan Favourite award. The Hard Working Dragon went to Rob Geddes, who counts 15 goals, 22 assists, and also played with a shoulder injury, whose best moment was recalled as the game winning goal against Brooks. Team coach, Dan Price presented the Rookie of the Year to co-winners, Mike Marianchuk, who Price described as fitting the Dragons’ definition to a ‘T’ and Marcus Toye, described as the epitome of the detail aspect of being a Dragon. The Top Defenceman Award went to Doug Jessey, who was described as playing the game with a ton of passion, and a player who loves to shoot the

puck. Price introduced the Most Valuable Player, recalling how his previous coach had told him he would be an impact player for the team. The award went to Evan Warner. Warner also picked up the Stewy Stewart Memorial Trophy, presented by Shirley Barby, sister of the late Stewy. This is the second Dragon to pick up this Trophy, given to the player who best exhibits character, dedication, perseverance, integrity and sportsmanship attributes. Top Scorer of the Year went to cowinners, Colin Bergman who scored 13 goals, with 25 assists for 38 points in 47 games, and Scott Kennedy, 56 games, 12 goals, 26 assists for 38 points. The Academic Achievement award went to Colin Bergman, for his work and effort on and off the ice. The Community Involvement award, presented by Rod Knelsen, went to Scott Kennedy. The Most Improved Player went to defenceman Matt Brown, for his determination to become better and his passion to become the best one day. Dylan Schellenberg was rewarded as the Unsung Hero, for “having fought every tough guy he had a chance to fight.” Scott Kennedy also received a Jeff Hendricks Memorial Scholarship and the RBC Scholarship Award went to Breyden DeCock, presented to Rob

Geddes on DeCock’s behalf as he was unable to attend. Jerseys went to Colin Bergman, Scott Kennedy, Pat Turville and Casey Fratkin.

Staff, billets and volunteers were also thanked, as well as The Dragons’ bus driver, Troy. Price referred to him as their ‘guardian angel’.

During the Dragons year end banquet on Friday, February 26, Top Scorer of the Year went to co-winners Scott Kennedy and Colin Bergman, each with 38 points. In the photo, (l-r) Scott Kennedy and Colin Bergman are showing their award, presented by coach Dave Ferrari.
