Levi Sparks “Never like Justin Bieber.”

For the second time in his life, Fred Makowecki is in the Roatan to witness first hand the difference the Morgan Jayne Project has made for families in the poverty stricken country. Makowecki’s return was made possible through an anonymous donor who sponsored his passage. He left last Friday, the 6th anniversary of is daughter Morgan Jayne’s passing.

QUOTE

It’s Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, May 13, and so inSide Drumheller asks: “What is the best advice your mother ever gave you?”

“In a word...we are STILL making one heck of a difference thanks to all those who send donations and love to a world 3000 miles away." Fred Makowecki

Alisa Gincher “Don’t let your dreams just be dreams.”

Cody Pickles “Always have fun!”

Laura Danchuk “Never leave the yard unless your mother says so.”

Today Makowecki will be attending a donor appreciation celebration. At the gathering, Johnny’s Library and Playground, set up in memory of John Charmont, the Drumheller youngster who died in an explosion at a hotel in Mexico will be dedicated. “In a word...we are STILL making one heck of a difference thanks to all those who send donations and love to a world 3000 miles away,” said Makowecki in a dispatch to inSide Drumheller. While he is hopeful, the snapshot he is seeing of the island is bleak. “Drug abuse among the poor remains a horrible scourge laying waste to families and resulting in a never ending circle of crime. Three minutes before we walked through the “swamp” one of the poorest places on the island, a young man was fatally shot. Everyone on the street was visibly disturbed. The economy is flat with tourism leading the way for employment.

Makowecki founded the Morgan Jayne Project in memory of his daughter. Its primary goal is to supply infant formula to HIV positive mothers to curb the transmission of the disease from parent to child through breast milk. It has built on that success, and while this remains its focus, it also opened a clinic, and now many of the children who were saved in the initial years of the project are school aged. “I am impressed with the scope of the schooling that has been undertaken on behalf of the children born of the program but have now grown to school age. We need many more sponsors to make sure the circle of non-education does not doom these children to the same path as their parents,” said Makowecki. Interpreting your 2012 tax statements Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

While it all might not go to the Town of Drumheller, local property taxpayers may see a jump on their bill. On Monday of this week, Drumheller Town Council

passed a bylaw to set its residential mill rate at 6.9857. This made a 4.6 per cent increase in tax dollars collected for residential and non residential taxes. In terms of individual taxes, Mayor Yemen said this amounts to about a 3 per cent

increase for residents. This rate does not include requisitioning amounts for schools and for the Drumheller and District Seniors Foundation. “Requisitions are completely separate from taxes,” said

Town programs encourages water conservation, composting Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller has revived its rain barrel and composter programs, and this summer residents will have the opportunity to purchase both to decrease their footprint. The Town brought in rain barrels and composting kits a couple years ago and residents eagerly snatched them up. They have decided to bring back the program, and are taking orders for both at the town office. Rain barrels are made of recycled plastics, have a capacity of 200 litres, and sell for $55. The composting kits are $75 and include all the accessories to get you started. “We are trying to get it up and running,” said Brian Bolduc utilities manager for the Town of Drumheller. He said conservation of water is important to many, and helps cut the costs of watering in the summer. He adds that while many communities have landfills that compost, Drumheller is not one of them. By composting, it can reduce the amount of material that is land filled. “We are trying to get people to compost at home instead of putting their leaves or grass into the landfill,” said Bolduc. The rain barrels and composters are high quality and are at a very competitive price compared to regular

retail prices. Bolduc says that is to make it easier for people to change habits. “We are trying to promote some stuff and give people a good deal in order to get them interested and have them keep going,” he said. He said last time they distributed the rain barrels they received very positive feedback from residents, many wanting to acquire more. This go round the there is a limit of two. The composting kits are limited to one per household. Those who participated in the previous year are eligible for the program. He said due the popularity of the program, The Town of Drumheller’s Green Team has brought in 250 barrels this time around. The process for attaining either of these items is the same as in previous years. Simply go to the Town of Drumheller office where residents can purchase a tag, and will be able to pick up the barrels when they arrive. “We are hoping to have pick up in the middle of June,” sad Bolduc. To conserve water, the Town of Drumheller is also giving rebates for replacing a high water consumption toilet for a high efficiency model. “If a person has a 13-plus litre (consumption toilet) and replaces it with a low flush 3 or 6 litre toilet, we offer up to a $175 rebate,” said Bolduc.

The rebate will be applied to the resident’s utility bill. The toilet has to be an eligible model that meet the requirements. A list of toilets that apply for the program is available at the Town of Drumheller. “It is a huge list, I don’t know where you would buy a toilet that would not make the list. The manufacturers in that industry have been really following the guidelines laid out by the Wastewater Association of American and the Water Works Association. They have been following this criteria really closely because this is something the industry was pushing so the manufacturers have been keeping up the pace, it’s great to see,” said Bolduc. For more information, contact the Town of Drumheller at 403-823-6300.

Yemen. “It is in there as a separate line item. People have to be cognizant, and not just read the bottom number, read everything there.” Mayor Yemen said Town Council has little input in these rates and are simply charged with collecting them. “The town is required to collect the requisitioning,” said Yemen, "…it is cash in, cash out.” The Drumheller and District Seniors Foundation mill rate for residential went from .2817 in 2011 to .3380 in 2012. The education requisition went from 2.4469 in 2011 to 2.5772 in 2012. The total mill rate, including requisitions went from 9.6414 in 2011 to 9.9009 in 2012 for residential. This means that for an average home with a 2012 assessment value of $189,949 the taxes collected by the Town of Drumheller will be $1,336.93. The total bill, including requisitions

will be about $1,880.67. This is on average 6.26 per cent, however it is dependent on each individual property owners 2012 assessment. This is a $110.76 increase per year, or $9.23 per month. Yemen said the requisitioning for Drumheller and District Seniors Foundation this year increased to $575,000, up $100,000, split between partner municipalities. Yemen said they expect the number to keep increasing each year. “It is time for the provincial government to step up a little bit there. They have stepped away a little bit, and it is time for them to come back to the table,” said Yemen. Included in each tax bill there is an insert containing details about taxes, including due date, penalties and procedures to appeal assessment. Residents cannot appeal taxes only their assessment.

Soggy Saturday delays highway cleanup Michael James | inSide Drumheller

In the last edition of inSide Drumheller, it was reported that organizations would be hitting the highways on Saturday, May 5, to participate in AlThe downpour last Saturday resulted it the Highway Cleanup Campaign being postponed. Groups will now be heading out on the highways tomorrow, May 12, to rid our highways of litter. inSide photo by Michael James

berta Transportation’s Highway Cleanup Campaign. Due to the abysmal weather on that day, the cleanup was postponed. Groups will be hitting the roads starting tomorrow to remove the litter that lines our highways. So far, forecasts are anticipating a warm, sunny day for the cleanup. The Highway Cleanup Campaign is an annual event where Alberta Transportation pays non-profit groups, such as scouts, service groups, or community associations, to clean up litter on Alberta’s highways. Depending on the highway, groups

can either earn $100 or $50 per kilometer of highway. Alberta Transportation assigns which groups will tackle which highways and provides all of the essential tools needed for the job, including bags, gloves, and reflective vests. Registration is closed for the 2012 campaign, but groups interested in participating next year can find out how to get involved by visiting www.transportation.alberta.ca/605. Motorists should be careful when travelling the highways this weekend, due to the many volunteers helping to keep our highways clean.

Tuesday, May 15, is a big day for Drumheller, it will be 99 years to the day since Drumheller was incorporated as a village. The countdown has begun for Drumheller’s 100 years of “Something to roar about.” It will be less than a year away until Drumheller celebrates it’s centennial. The Drumheller Centennial Committee is hoping to get residents thinking about the centennial now. “We’re trying to make people aware that the 15th of May is the actual date of the centennial,” said committee member, Councillor Sharel Shoff. The committee has events in the planning stages and is putting together a centennial calendar. The calendar will feature photos from Drumheller’s history and events throughout the community. The calendar will be sold in October, but to get it ready, the committee is asking residents to

donate photos. The photos will be made into a collage. Residents can post photos on the Drumheller Centennial Facebook page or to committe member Roxanne Clarke at r.clarke@ drumhellerchamber.com. Groups are also being asked to get their events for 2013 on the centennial calender. “If groups, service clubs, school, or whoever has an event in 2013, we’d like to have it on the calendar,” said Shoff. The events do not necessarily have to be a part of the centennial celebrations. For example, if a group has a pancake breakfast, that could be on the calendar. The committee is planning it’s own events, kicking off the centennial on New Year's Eve. Other major events will be held on Canada Day and, of course, May 15. Residents wishing to learn more about the centennial or wish to become involved are encouraged to visit the Drumheller Centennial Facebook page or the Town of Drumheller’s website www.dinosaurvalley.com. Residents can also contact Shoff at 403-820-1644 or Paul Salvatore at 403-823-1316. Committee meetings are held the third Wednesday every month at noon. “If people want to get involved or have an idea, come to our meetings. We’re more than open to suggestions,” said Shoff. “The more people that get involved, the better it will be.”

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Mother’s Day Sunday, May 13, 2012

Mother's Day Tidbits and Trivia Mother's Day is a day devoted to celebrating mothers and expressing love for the special women in our lives. Mother's Day can also be a time to share some trivia and tidbits with those special women who mean so much. * Americans owe Mother's Day to West Virginia native Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial for her mother two years after the latter's death in 1905. After the memorial, Jarvis devoted her efforts to a campaign to make Mother's Day a nationally recognized holiday. The hard work paid off in 1914 when the day was nationally recognized.

* Anna Jarvis and her sister, Ellsinore, eventually grew to detest what they felt Mother's Day had become. The sisters felt the day had grown too commercialized, and spent their family inheritance campaigning against Mother's Day. * Ironically, Anna Jarvis never married and had no children. * Rajo Devi Lohan of India is believed to be the world's oldest new mother. Lohan gave birth to a baby girl at age 70 after receiving IVF treatment. Within two years of the child's birth, reports indicated Lohan's health was deteriorating. * Lina Medina is consid-

ered to be the youngest to ever give birth. Medina delivered a 6 1/2-pound baby boy in Peru at the age of 5 years and 7 months. Medina was believed to have a rare condition known as precocious puberty, which enabled her to conceive at such a young age. * Ancient Egyptians had their own form of Mother's Day by honoring the goddess Isis, who was known as the mother of pharaohs. * The wife of Russian peasant Feodor Vassilyev is considered to be the record

holder for birthing the most children. Mrs. Vassilyev is believed to have delivered 69 children between 1725 and 1765. These children were delivered in a total of 27 births, including 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. Though little is known about the births or Mrs. Vassilyev, 67 of the 69 children were said to have survived infancy. * The bond between mother and child is not exclusive to the human race. Mother chimpanzees, for instance,

are said to develop lifelong relationships with their children. * Carnations are the flowers most associated with Mother's Day. White carnations are worn in the memory of deceased mothers, while red and pink carnations are worn for those mothers who are still alive.

Simple Sweet and Sour Ribs Instead of taking Mother out for Chinese food, you might like to treat her to some home-made instead. Try these sweet and sour ribs along with a nice fried rice. You can save time by mixing a package of frozen vegetables in with the rice. There are many good varieties of Asian blends in the freezer section these days. When it is done, add a slightly beaten egg and stir until its cooked and mixed in well. For the ribs, use the sweet and sour cut. Remove the membrane from the bone side by grasping it with a piece of paper towel and tearing it off. Cut the meat into individual ribs. Steam them for about an hour or until the meat is very tender. When done, allow to cool. While the ribs are cooking, prepare the sauce as follows:

Mom’s hard at work Scott and Linda Patterson have the pleasure of watching nature in their own back year. A mommy robin found a comfortable place to nest in the shed of their Midland home, and she has been diligently guarding her eggs. Soon there will be more mouths to feed.

Very, very thinly slice a red pepper and cook gently in a small pan with a little oil. Cook like this for 10-15 mins. Do not allow the pepper to colour or burn. What you are doing here is drawing the sweetness and flavour out of the pepper. You know when it’s done when the pepper has practically melted and the oil has a red tinge to it. Add 6 Tbsp vinegar, 5 Tbsp sugar and 2 Tbsp soy sauce. Simmer a few minutes to dissolve the

sugar. Mix 2 Tbsp cornflour and 1 egg in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Mix the cooled ribs to this thick paste, trying to coat as evenly as possible. Arrange coated ribs in a baking dish and pour the sweet and sour sauce over. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes to an hour. While the ribs bake, you will have a chance to make the rice. A Mother is a shoulder to cry on, a smile to count on, a love to live on. Happy Mother’s Day to all my favorite moms out there!

Mother’s Day Sunday, May 13, 2012

Famous Quotes for Mother's Day Mother's Day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world. Many countries and cultures choose to celebrate Mother's Day in March, April or May. Though the Mother's Day many people know today dates back a little more than a century, historians note that ancient Romans kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of the Gods. In addition, Europe has several traditions aimed at honoring mothers that date back quite a while. Can you remember the 3rd hole at Akokiniskway? Akokiniskway Golf Club is excited to announce it is back to a full nine holes for this season. Because of flooding last spring, both bridges to hole #3 at the course in Rosebud were washed away. Thanks to Knibb Developments, the bridges are back and better than ever. The club opened in April and as a thank you to all its customers for being patient while there were no bridges, green fees will remain at last year’s rates. They challenge golfers to come on out and see if they can remember how to golf the third hole!

Calgary Space Workers planning to install demonstrator space environment in valley Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller While residents and visitors were celebrating the past at the May Day Miners celebrations, some were looking to the future, and that future may be in space. The Calgary Space Workers Society were in the valley on Saturday and Sunday at the Homestead Museum. This is a group of space enthusiasts who have aspirations of someday living in space. The group set up on the weekend to do presentations and interpret displays as well as have discussion on their group and the ideas and technology they are working with. The group came through the

valley a couple years ago and were planning on setting up a demonstrator environment that could sustain life on the moon. While their plan didn’t materialize in 2009, Mike Bakk Captain of the Calgary Space Workers Society said they are planning to set up their demonstrator in June at the Homestead Museum. This will consist of two hard shell units with collapsible sections. Bakk chuckles when he explains that of course the habitat they are creating from an Airstream trailer and inflatable corridors is never going to end up on the moon. The goal of the demonstrator is simply to show that with today’s technology, it's more than capable of sustaining hu-

man life The have been experimenting with different materials and have even been working on different ways to grow food in a space environment. They have all kinds of communication technology, and Bakk even had a radio they have used on a couple occasions to communicate with Dr. Robert Thirsk on the International Space Station. To get ready for installing the demonstrator this June at the Homestead Museum, they are actively looking for volunteers to help with the demonstrator. More information is available at www.calgaryspaceworkers.com

Enerflex MS Walk attracts more than 100 walkers

cooks wanted

Do you have a passion for cooking great food? If you love to cook and have a desire to create great food then you just might be the person we are looking for. Must have some culinary knowledge, be neat in appearance & presentation, be dependable & reliable. Must be able to work all shifts including weekends.

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The clouds parted and the sun was shining last Sunday morning as more than 100 came out for the Enerex MS walk. “The clouds broke and it was a beautiful day,â€? said MS Walk coordinator Dianne Snyder. “Someone was watching over us.â€? While registrations leading up to the walk was down a bit, there were many in the valley who registered the morning of the event to take part in the walk. Spirits were high as they hit the course. These walkers donned special shirts reading “ I lace up forâ€? with a space for walkers to write in the name of a loved one who is or has battled MS. This was a tasteful way of making the walk personal for each participant. The oldest walker on the course this year was Evelyn Pratt and the youngest was Ryan BurďŹ eld. Not only was the walk well supported by participants, but by local businesses and organizations who continued their sponsorship of the walk. Glen Croteau of Gas Drive, a subsidiary of Enerex was on hand. He explained the company has been involved with the walk since 1997, and for the last three years they have had a team in every walk in Alberta. This was the fourth year they have been the naming provincial sponsor, and since the ďŹ rst Enerex team entered the walk 15 years ago, employees have raised more than $1 million and 1,500 have participated. This year the company donated $137,500 provincially to the walk. “On behalf of the company I would like to extend a sincere thanks to the dedicated and hard working people of the MS Society, it is because of you and your enthusiasm, commitment for this event has grown in popularity like it has,â€? said Croteau. There was also a strong contingent of volunteers on walk day doing everything from registering walkers to manning checkpoints. Snyder is grateful for the support for the MS walk. The preliminary funds have been sent to the MS Society, and she is expecting a total shortly. Funds from the walk go towards research and support programs for those with MS and their families.

Lack of access to water frustrates Rocky View Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Rocky View County Council is growing frustrated that water from the Aqua 7 Water Commission is not flowing freely into the county. For years Rock View has wanted to amend the Geographical restrictions of the Water Commission it agreed to, which was to be able to use water from the

Red Deer River, treated at the Drumheller Water Treatment plant and delivered via Aqua 7 to a set geographical region. Drumheller agreed to an amendment that would allow the county to use water in Kathryn. Most recently the county made a request in February to relax the restrictions so water could be used on all points of the county. Drumheller Council denied the

request. Rocky View Councillor Greg Boehlke who sits on the Aqua 7 Commission was quoted in the Rocky View Tims as saying… "It’s not the Commission’s fault, It’s not them, blame Drumheller.” He explains his frustration. “It is true. Aqua 7 has been totally behind Rocky View. Every member of that commission is trying to secure the water for us to use , and it is not because they think Rocky View is a bunch of good old boys. It stands to reason that if Rocky View had an allotment of water and was using it, the rate of the water would go down, the turbidity problems would be helped with the greater volume at the plant. It would be a win-win project for everybody.” While it was reported that the county was considering leaving Aqua 7, he says that is not accurate. “We don’t want to leave but we are spending a lot of money every year in administration fees for Aqua 7 and we are helping to finance the deficit that is there and we have no access to water to get it to where we need it,” said Boehlke. “We have been negotiating with the province or the Town of Drumheller for the last seven or eight years to try and get the map expanded and it hasn’t been working.” “We absolutely want to stay in the commission and want to support our neighbours and help support Drumheller… It just ups the volume for Drumheller and allows them another good customer, but we have to get this map issue settled and get the water to where we can use it.” He said the agreement with the geographical restrictions was entered into about 10 years ago, and was before the county was facing as many pressures for expansion. “I believe the council of the day were led to believe that map was just a map, an area cordoned off, and if you need the water anywhere else you can change it any time,” said Boehlke. He hopes they can negotiate an arrangement for the water. “How long can you ask an entity to pay for something they have no direct access to where they need it?” asks Boehlke.

Clubs for Kids a hole-in-one for Drumheller Schools

“We do golf lessons in Phys Ed, but we don’t have clubs. With the clubs, we won’t have to rent as many, so it’ll cut costs.

to help get the clubs in the hands of the kids who can use them, said Zariski. This isn’t the end of the Clubs for Kids program. Zariski keeps being contacted by individuals wishing to donate their clubs. As more clubs are donated, they will be sent to the schools who need them. “We’ll keep in touch with the schools, said Zariski. “They might need golf balls or tees. If they develop teams we might be able to help out with travel. This is the beginning of the program.

Schools in the Valley are thrilled to have received sets of golf clubs, generously donated by residents. Thanks to the Drumheller Community Golf Association (DCGA), kids will be able to learn the sport of golf. Tom Zariski, an avid golfer, and previous board member of DCGA, was playing the role of Santa Claus (if Santa was really into golf ) on Wednesday, May 2. Zariski delivered roughly 20 sets of clubs to Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS), St. Anthony’s School, and Greentree School. “I’ll be able to use them in my high school Phys Ed classes,â€? said Je Messom, athletic director at DVSS. “We do golf lessons in Phys Ed, but we don’t have clubs. With the clubs, we won’t have to rent as many, so it’ll cut costs.â€? Messom further explained the clubs could be used to start teaching golf in junior high in the school ďŹ eld and using wie balls. “We are delighted to have the clubs donated, because we believe in healthy living and active lifestyle. It’s crucial to have a well balanced Phys Ed program and we can do that with the clubs,â€? said Jane Smith, associate principal of Greentree School. “It’s great to have the clubs for the older students and promote golf as a sport.â€? The initiative was sponsored by the Royal Tyrrell

Museum Cooperating Society and Newcastle Recreation Association. Alberta Golf, Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club, Rotary Club, Salvation Army, Pioneer Trail Centre, and many individuals donated the clubs. “It’s really gratifying that community groups and individuals came together
