Jason Rasmussen selected for provincial Excellence in Teaching Award Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller Valley Second-

ary School (DVSS) teacher is being honoured along with 20 other teachers across Alberta with the province’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Science teacher Jason Rasmussen has been invited to accept his award in Calgary on May 26. Associate principal Dan Hird, who won the award last year, nominated him. “Number one, I can’t even begin to say how honoured I am to be recognized by Dan, I have nothing but respect for him as a teacher and for him to nominate me, I am floored by that,” said Rasmussen. His nomination was supported by principal Curtis LaPierre and a parent who also wrote a letter of support. Rasmussen was nominated with 341 other teachers throughout the province for the Excellence In Teaching Award and the SMART Technologies Innovative Use of Technology Award. In April, the list was pared down to 130 semifinalists who

Sandra Cuddie “Education is the base of our future. The government should provide funding so education can be there for anyone who wants it.”

each received access to $1,500 for professional development. On May 18 the final list was announced and Rasmussen will be rewarded with an additional $4,000 to put towards professional development. ‘Those letters and the nomination itself is an honour, it is just so flattering to read those letters and have my name thrown in the hat. And now going through the semifinals and being recognized as a finalist is a little bit surreal,” he said. He goes on to say how lucky he is to be in a profession he loves, and that spills over into the classroom. “I have a passion for what I do. If you are having fun in your home life and your place of employment I think you are going to be more effective at what you do. I have had an absolute blast over the last 12 years teaching here in Drumheller. I have developed a real sense of community within the school, but also in the broader sense within the community of Drumheller. “My theory is, if I can have students walk in and enjoy them-

selves in my class, that helps them be engaged and interested in what they are doing. If my infectiousness wears off on them… I like to think they are interested and enjoying themselves and achieving a little bit higher because of my efforts.” Rasmussen grew up in the valley and studied education at the University of Lethbridge. His first fulltime placement at DCHS was in 2000. “The first offer I received was at DCHS, I know that (then principal) Tom Zariski, who was a teacher of mine, was vocal in having a position offered to me and I’ll always be thankful to him for that because it allowed me to discover my passion for teaching,” said Rasmussen. He began teaching primarily junior high sciences and progressively got more involved teaching at the high school level. He also taught outdoor education and worked to develop the palaeontology courses now offered at DVSS. When he was first hired he became involved as the equipment manager of Drumheller Titans Football. He worked his way

up to becoming head coach, and currently is an offensive coach of the Provincial Champion Titans.

Science teacher Jason Rasmussen is being recognized with the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award. He was selected as on of 20 finalists this year from a field of 341. Last year Dan Hird , also of DVSS was selected for the prestigious honour. inSIde photo by Patrick Kolafa

John Shoff, President of the DinoArt Project, and Mayor Terry Yemen cozy up to the newest dinosaur addition which was unveiled downtown on May 24. The DinoBench has been a collaborative effort by the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce and its DinoArts committee. This project was made possible by the committee and its volunteers, the Town of Drumheller, and donors who supported the committee. Funds raised last year enabled the committee to restore and repaint a mural along with several cement dinosaur sculptures around town, and to bring this new dinosaur project to life. Through ongoing fundraising, the DinoArts committee hopes to install a project like this one on a yearly basis.

May 22, 2012 • • • • • • Mayor Terry Yemen opened council by presenting a letter from the Alberta Recycling Management Authority stating that the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club was awarded a $20,000 matching grant to improve the cart paths. • • • • • • Council passed a motion to accept the appointment of Alec Hammond to the Drumheller Library Board for a three year term. Councillor Andrew Berdahl stated that the board was looking to expand it's membership to ten people. The board currently operates with seven board members. Councillor Berdahl encouraged interested residents to contact 403-823-1371. • • • • • • Councillor Berdahl gave a report on the Library Board's recent budget review. The Library is facing roughly a $7000 deficit and is considering cutting services to eliminate said deficit. • • • • • • CAO Ray Romanetz presented an overview of changes to the Town's traffic bylaws. The intent of the changes is to recognize that many roads within Drumheller are not built to withstand heavy vehicles, especially tri-axel trucks. The maximum weight allowed on Drumheller roads, excluding primary and secondary highways, would be 8000 kg. A proposed change in the traffic bylaws would allow the CAO to place road bans to prevent damage to roads. Appeals could then be made to Council. It is hoped this will streamline the process and reduce maintenance on Drumheller roadways. Administration will use the next couple weeks to make amendments to the bylaw and present it again to Council.

Well, what a dierence a couple or three

weeks can make. The skies were clear, the thermometer was riding high, and there was just the slightest zephyr moving the air. It was no less than a stunning day for something called SpringFest. And the people turned out in droves to enjoy some very good musical performances in a variety of genres. It seemed that every venue, at one time or another, was standing room only. And if you happened to saunter down to the local saloon for a “cold oneâ€?, you’d even ďŹ nd music there, but good luck ďŹ nding a place to “plant itâ€?. Yes, SpringFest 2012 was a resounding  success, with the weather, the musicians, and all those in attendance cooperating to make a very enjoyable day. The people especially, they are laid back, pleasant, friendly, and just out for a nice day. Sure, there’s beer aplenty, but no one gets drunk, or out of hand. People are just glad to be there. Maybe they’re just happy that Spring really is here. Congratulations to the organizers. 21m

Half way to BCF fund-raising goal Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

There is still a ways to go to meeting the fundraising goal for the Badlands Community Facility. The Badlands Community Facility Fundraising Cabinet hosted a meeting with donors and potential donors for the Badlands Community Facility on Wednes-

day afternoon. The Cabinet Cochair Je Hall announced they have raised $3,175,162 towards construction of the Badlands Community Facility. The fundraising portion of the budget is approximately $6 million for the ďŹ rst phase, which is now complete. “We are very proud of those members of our community,

generous companies and our local service clubs and organizations who have made a statement of commitment to this community with their gift, said Hall in

a press release. This great new facility makes me proud of the work the volunteer team has achieved so far. Fundraising for the Badlands

Co-Chairs of the Badlands Community Facility Volunteer Campaign Cabinet Jeff Hall, left and Elson McDougald updated some community members on the progress of their fundraising efforts and launched the second phase of the fundraising campaign. So far they have raised about $3.1 million.

Community Facility started with a bang. In November of 2009, fundraisers hosted the Calgary Flames Alumni to a charity game. By March 2010, The Mail reported they had $1.7 million committed. In November of 2010 the Town contracted Nine Lions Development Consulting for $233,000 to work on fundraising. At the time, Hall said the hiring costs were all inclusive for both phases of the Badlands Community Facility. He is happy with the performance of the company. He does clarify their role. “Nine Lions was never engaged to ďŹ nd leads for us, they were engaged to help us with the whole process," said Hall. Scott Decksheimer of Nine Lions was at the event Thursday but did not address those gathered. Mr. Hall also took the opportunity to launch the next phase of the fundraising campaign. “There are many ways to get involved, make a gift directly to the BCF, holding an event or directing funds from a current event to support the BCF or purchase one or more bricks on the new Legacy Donor Patio and have it inscribed with something meaningful for you.â€? The Legacy Patio will be along the walking trail directly behind the Badlands Community Facility to celebrate donors who make a contribution of $250, $500 or $1,000 to the campaign. "Where we are sitting as a whole I think is really good for a community this size,â€? said Hall. “I think we are happy with where we are right now given the magnitude of the donations we have received, and now that we can enter the community phase of the campaign, hopefully that momentum will continue to build.â€?

Passion Play expands theatre for 2012 show It’s another big year for the Badlands Passion Play. Crews have been busy expanding the theatre and constructing the new forum in anticipation of the 2012 Passion Play production. The ďŹ rst thing visitors will notice at the site is the Passion Play using the old ski quonset as a stage shop. The Passion Play has been renovating the lodge basement and will be using it as oďŹƒce space and a green room for its volunteers. The use of the quonset and lodge basement were made possible after the ski hill closed. “For us, to have secured it and now use it, that’s fantastic,â€? said Passion Play president Vance Neudorf. “It’s facilitated our expansion.â€? The Passion Play coowned the area at the base of the hill, which included the lift station, quonset, and a considerable amount of parking. The Passion Play bought the ski hill’s share of the land earlier this year. When walking towards the theatre, visitors will see an entirely brand new structure; the forum. The forum is a small theatre space and could be used throughout the year. Neudorf indicated the forum could be used for a number of events such as concerts or plays. Plans are to eventually put a roof over the forum

and its seating, making it usable rain or shine. “We want to continue to expand and enlarge to accommodate a more constant stream of visitors, said Neudorf. Between the forum and the main stage, there will be a marketplace. The main theatre has undergone a few big changes

as well. The size stage has been tripled, in particular the grassy area on stage right has been extended and raised, allowing actors

to move to dierent parts of the stage unseen. Using a larger stage is made possible though the sound system installed in the theatre. The improvements have been made possible through the Rural Alberta Development Fund Grant and donations. “It’s very much a community eort,â€? said Neudorf. “The support we have received has been overwhelming.â€? One of the ways people have been donating is by helping to purchase the concrete blocks that make up the retaining walls in the forum and in the new backstage area. The blocks are made by

LPR Concrete using recycled or excess material. The Passion Play ran a program whereby community members could buy blocks for the construction. Roughly 270 blocks were donated. It is the community that Neudorf credits for making the play possible. “Community goodwill is the support that keeps us going, said Neudorf. “We couldn’t survive without the people, because it’s such a massive undertaking. The 2012 Passion Play begins on July 13. For tickets and information, visit www. canadianpassionplay.com.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

You never forget your first, and Darren Tanke still has his. As a young man coming to the Dinosaur Valley to help build the Royal Tyrrell Museum in the early 80's, he had a small apartment and a bike. Eventually he had the opportunity to pick up this 1955 Buick Special Riviera, his first car. The four-door Riviera was a new addition in 1955 and is powered by a 264 Nailhead, Buick’s first V-8 to replace its Straight -8 power plants.

He drove it for a few years, and for many in the valley, Tanke said seeing his car on the road was a harbinger of spring. He bought the car in original condition and he has since had it repainted a couple times. It sat for about 11 years, and when finances permitted he had the engine rebuilt and now it is back on the road. He is planning to show it at this year’s Boogie in the Badlands this Saturday at Drumheller Chrysler. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you could find yourself daydreaming this week, which will only make an important decision even harder to make. You need to focus, or the week will be wasted.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, there is no time for daydreaming right now. There's simply too much to get done. Start on small tasks and build up to the larger ones.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Common sense may be what you use to operate, Taurus, but this week a little imagination and spontaneity could be the secret to achieving great success in the next few days.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Sometimes the best growth comes from not knowing where you're heading, Scorpio. While you may want to have a game plan, let creative energy drive you instead.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Be careful with whom you share your goals, Gemini. While there just may be a few copycats who want to steal your thunder, you could find a promotion is stolen away as well.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, though right now you can probably get away with saying whatever comes into your mind, it's better to stick to the subject at hand. Censor yourself a little.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, explore new ways of doing things this week, especially in your professional life. There's always room to grow and a new perspective might make things easier. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, be careful of a misstep when you move into new territory. Don't leak information before you have fully developed the ideas, or things could get tricky.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Cosmic fog is clouding your reality, Virgo. It is unlikely you will be able to make a sound decision, so it is best to wait a while before tackling difficult or life-altering projects.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, a fear of failure may override your ambition. Don't let these feelings compromise your plan for doing something new and different. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, it can be a little challenging to figure out what is bothering you, but be patient. The truth will be revealed in due time. Focus on something else. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you may have some unfinished business to complete, but it won't get done right away. Focus on the task at hand.

Remembering COLE Lorne Randall November 26th, 1948 - May 21st, 2012 (Papa) Lorne passed away suddenly Monday, May 21st, 2012 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan while he and JoAnn were enjoying a long weekend with their family. Lorne was born in Trail B.C. on November 26th, 1948 and was predeceased by his father Wallace Cole, his mother Audrey Harwood, and his brothers Jim and Dan Cole. Lorne retired early in his career and in life, but he never stopped working. Every day he found someone to help, or something to work on. As a dedicated father, Lorne’s presence lives on in his daughters’ spirits, knowledge, and even their physical surroundings: the garage he helped wire, the shed and fence he helped build, the pictures he hung, and the shelves he built. Lorne was a wealth of knowledge, he was always able to offer valuable advice followed by a helping hand. As a valued Rotarian, Lorne will be remembered for his hard work and his heart. When you drive by a sign for the coal mine put up by the Rotary, you’ll see evidence Lorne would do whatever was needed with a sense of purpose. Lorne and JoAnn spent their winters in Yuma, square dancing, and playing golf and poker with their friends. The rest of the year was spent visiting family, frequenting Stage West, participating in Rotary activities, camping, more square dancing, and constant home improvements and car tinkering. Lorne has attained so many great achievements during his lifetime: holding a Master Electrician ticket, and working as a controls specialist as owner and founder of Cole’s Controls. He even held a pilot’s licence, and a real estate license. Lorne went after what he wanted and was living proof that success is dependent on effort. Lorne will be sadly missed by his wife, JoAnn Werschler (nee McKenzie), his two sisters Heather Thompson and Debbie Newbury and their families, his two daughters and their families: Sheri & Murray Gunville, and Tanya & Dale McMaster. His sense of humour and love for life lives on in his 5 grandchildren: Kelsey & Hailey Gunville in Prince Albert, and Colton, Elle, & Chael McMaster in Calgary. Memorial services will be held Monday, May 28th, 2012 at the Badlands Community Facility at 2:00 p.m. If so desired, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Drumheller Salvation Army at Box 3097 Drumheller AB, T0J 0Y0. 21c

Kids get a Jumpstart for sports Donella Swan | inSide Drumheller

In Canada, many families simply cannot afford to enrol their children in any organized sports or extra recreational activities. Participating in organized sports and recreational activities offer children life lessons such as sportsmanship, teamwork, determination and tenacity, builds leadership skills and boosts self esteem. However, despite financial hardships many Canadian parents are experiencing, when there is a will there is a way. The Canadian Tire Jumpstart program has assisted 439,383 children, as of March 30 to participate in sports programs and are a major sponsor of the KidSport program. KidSport was initially created in British Columbia in 1993, and was aiming to ensure kids got to play the sports they love without letting financial barriers deter them.

“These funds help a great deal, and it is nice they stay in the community,” said Dave Watson, chairperson of Drumheller KidSport. Watson said they receive around $5,000 per year from funds raised by Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Day, but it can vary from year to year. He said this money is a fairly big portion of the $7,000-$9,000 that gets distributed to around 60-90 children in Drumheller and area. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and transportation, children are given the chance to participate in recreational activities that otherwise would have been out of the question. Jumpstart Day will take place on Saturday, May 26. The public will be given the chance to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball at Canadian Tire, Mark’s, Canadian Tire Gas and Pita Pit locations, with all proceeds going to Canadian Tire Jumpstart.

Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Day will enable children to participate in organized sports they otherwise could not afford. Jumpstart Day helps support KidSport here in Drumheller. inSide photo by Donella Swan

Puck drops again for good cause Donella Swan| inSide Drumheller

“The students had a blast playing the RCMP last year, and the students are looking forward to it again,” said Jeff Messom, Athletic Director of DVSS Messom said last year the student body, eager to watch the game, raised approximately $300, which was donated to the food bank. The RCMP donated $100 last year, and will be making another donation.

The senior high floor hockey intramural champs are excited to go head to head with members of the Drumheller RCMP detachment to possibly claim another victory. On Wednesday, May 30, the two teams will battle one another for the win in a floor hockey game, which will be held in the gymnasium at Drumheller Valley Secondary School. For fellow classes to take in the match, they must raise $20, which will be donated to The Salvation Army Food Bank. “We just try to get out as much as possible with the kids to have fun and make it worthwhile,” said Constable Tom Dobrich, who helped organize the first event in December 2010, and will be play- Talon Marshall, a Grade 10 student, Jeff Messom, Athletic Direcing in the second tor of DVSS, and Constable Tom Dobrich get ready to face off game come May on May 30. Olympic Athlete inspires students to stay positive Donella Swan| inSide Drumheller

Students cheered in the audience at St. Anthony’s School as Chris Spring, driver of the Canadian Bobsleigh team, demonstrated an exhilarating ride down the icy track. The Olympian shared stories of racing, but that was not his take away message. “Think positive, believe in yourself, set goals and motivate yourself to meet them,” said Spring. Following a crash in Germany, Spring had a hard time getting his head back into the sport. He told students that the only way for him to shake his fear was to block out all negative Spring chooses volunteers to help demonstrate a bobthoughts and remain sleigh ride. Eager to be picked, the grades four to seven students at St. Anthony’s waved raised hands wildly in positive. It sure paid off when he anticipation.

Food for

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist Summer is a great time for ice cream and banana splits, but what about hot dogs or wiener splits? To make this fun dish, use the photo as a guide. I cooked, then cooled the wieners first. You can slice the wiener lengthwise, cutting not quite through and then opening it up book-style. Or you can also just leave it whole. (I thought the salad scoops would sit better on a sliced one.) Over top of the wiener, place three scoops of salads. One of potato salad, one of coleslaw and one of macaroni salad. I used a piping bag and large star tip to pipe mashed potato on top of the scoops to resemble whipped cream. Drizzle some steak sauce (to resemble chocolate sauce) over the potato salad scoop, mustard (appearing as butterscotch) over the macaroni scoop and set a cherry tomato on top of the coleslaw. You might also use relish as garnish, or a dill pickle spear along side.

led his team to victory following the crash. "I won not because I was the biggest guy there, or not because I was the fastest athlete, but because I believed in my ability.”

Quote of the week: If you want to make this as a quick and easy, no-fuss treat, purchase ready-made salads in the deli section of the grocery store. Our deli’s in town have some very tasty salads. You don’t need much mashed potato, so you might like to just pick up a small container of that in the deli as well. Here’s to Summer Fun and Foods!
