It may bring back memories, but it might be a stretch to say they are fond. Outhouse, Privy, Sugar Shack, call them what you like, we all had ’em and we all used ’em. They certainly played a role and they will be remembered in all their funky glory at the first ever Outhouse Games at the May Day Miners’ Festival this weekend. The games are on Saturday, May 5 right after the Miners’ March on Centre Street. According to organizers, an un-named town official said, “I thought we fixed those potholes on Centre Street!” Audience members will be invited to join in the good clean fun. Atlas Coal Mine staff (clockwise from top) Brittany Stahl, Chelsea Saltys, Jenn Balderston, Kelly Edie and Alix Cowman get ready for the games.

inSide Rains wash away Drumheller fire ban STREETERS | for more,” said Fire Chief time of year. Michael James

Spring has sprung and that means it’s time to clean out the house for some garage sales, so inSide Drumheller asks: “What is the weirdest thing you have in your closet?”

Last week, the Town of Drumheller announced the Drumheller municipal area was under a fire ban. After a weekend of rain that ban was lifted as of Tuesday, May 1, at 10:00 a.m. “We’ve had a good localized rain and the forecast for the next day or two is

Bill Bachynski. “Even if we don’t get anymore, there’s been enough to lift the fire ban.” The ban was sparked after high temperatures and winds conspired to leave the prairies bone dry. The dry conditions resulted in more grass/bush fires than the average for this

Due to recent rainfall, the fire ban that was imposed upon Drumheller on Monday, April 23, has now been lifted as of Tuesday, May 1. The ban came after the prairies were turned

Despite the ban being lifted, Bachynski advises caution when dealing with fire. “You should be careful all year round in regards to fire,” said Bachynski. Bachynski reminds you that under the Town of Drumheller’s bylaws, residents must have a permit to openly burn anything.

Alberta’s highways are getting a much needed cleaning this weekend. Groups and clubs from all over the province will be hitting the roads to rid highways of litter. Alberta Transportation is holding it’s annual highway cleanup program starting on Saturday, May 5, and lasting to the end of Sunday. The program pays non profit groups, such as scouts, service clubs, or community associations for every kilometer of highway they clean. Clubs in Drumheller will on the highways this weekend as well, hoping to make our highways more appealing. The Drumheller Filipino Community (DFC) will be cleaning up litter along Highway 838, otherwise known as North Dinosaur Trail, from the intersection with Highway 9 and to beyond the Royal Tyrrell Mu-

seum, for a total of 16 km. “We want to contribute to the community, so we’re thinking of activities that are community related,” said Luis Padilla, chairman of the DFC. The DFC will be on the road from 9 a.m. until roughly 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5. Between 30 and 40 members will be helping out. The DFC is prepared, hav-

ing purchased bags, gloves, and reflective vests. All that needs to be ready is the weather. “On Friday, they will call us if we can continue,” said Padilla. “If not, then we’ll go out on May 12.” With all the volunteers on the road this weekend, motorists should be careful when travelling the highways.

This weekend, clubs will be on the roads around Drumheller as part of Transportation Alberta’s highway cleanup program. Non-profit organizations can earn money for each kilometer of highway they free of litter.

Letter to the Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor, This letter is to you pet owners in Nacmine. I realize everyone is and should be entitled to have pets, but be responsible owners please!!!! It is your pet not mine, and I don’t enjoy listening to it bark and bark. What on earth are you thinking!!!! Do you honestly believe the neighbourhood really wants to hear your dog bark all day long, some of them bark at their own shadow, and that starts the rest of the dogs in the neighbourhood. The four houses around me have 9 dogs. The barking starts at 6:00 a.m. and continues til 9 or 10 at night. Some nights I get to listen to them whine and cry cause you leave them outside all night. The only time I don’t have to listen to them is when I leave my house. Most people walk on the road to shy away from dogs out in your yards, cause they go ballistic when someone goes near your property. I feel horrible for the kids walking home from the bus, or trying to play outside. I should add that I have seldom seen any of you take these animals for walks or spend any time with them. Some life for those poor animals, just stuck outside alone most of the day and sometimes night. Please keep your pets quiet, maybe in your house where I can’t hear them. Maggie Nelson

Masons host “our Partners Party Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Masons in the Drumheller area took time out to honour the widows of many of their members at their annual “our Partners Party" last Saturday. It was a gala event for the Symbol Lodge and Drumhell-

er Lodge 146 hosted the annual event. This year there were 18 eligible women invited and 14 replied to attend. In the spirit of the evening each was picked up from their home, given a corsage, and an escort accompanied them to the lodge.

At the party they enjoyed a wine and cheese reception followed by dinner and were entertained by the vocal trio Triple Play. The evening concluded with a gift, a photo with their escort and a trip home. Mason Doug Wade said

it was a grand evening and among the notable guests was Helen Paterson, the widow of Jack Paterson. Paterson was a Staff Sergeant in the Drumheller area about three decades ago. When he retired he and

his wife went on to own the convenience store at Tunnel Mountain in Banff. Current Staff Sergeant and mason Art Hopkins escorted Mrs. Paterson. It is a treasure we enjoy doing every year, said Wade.

Cenovus launches “Great Computer Give-Away submitted | inSide Drumheller

Cenovus Energy will launch its second annual Great Computer Give-Away tomorrow with the goal of putting 300 desktops in the hands of charitable and non-profit groups to help them deliver muchneeded programs in the communities they serve. The company is looking for organizations in Calgary and other communities across Alberta and Saskatchewan where Cenovus operates to apply between May 1 and May 15 at www.cenovus.com for the opportunity to receive the refurbished desktops. Cenovus will provide a maximum of three units per group. The company is working with Calgary-based DeliverGood, a group that connects charities and non-profits who need supplies, equipment or furniture, with those who have items to donate. “We’re pleased to once again offer this program to further enhance our community partnerships,’’ said Lynne Douglas, Group Lead Community Investment. “Groups that received computers last year told us they were able to put them to good use, helping them to improve the level of services and programs they provide in their community.

In the matter of Graham Walsh of Drumheller. Graham Walsh is no longer employed by Newcastle Towing. Graham Walsh has no business dealings with Newcastle Towing. Newcastle Towing will not be responsible for any transactions or agreements made by Graham Walsh.

Last year, a total of 93 organizations received 236 computers through the program. The Newell Further Education Council in southern Alberta was one of the recipients, where the computers quickly found willing users. “Our organization received three computers in the last Give-Away. They arrived looking brand new and with the help of my 9-year-old volunteer, we had them set-up in no time, said Jackie Peterson, the council’s program coordinator. “We’re sincerely thankful for the computers. They help our students in their beginner computer courses and business training webinars. The desktops become available each year as Cenovus replaces computers in working condition that are more than five years old. The computers are cleaned of all company information and a basic operating system is installed. Keyboards and monitors will also be part of the package provided to successful applicants. As an Imagine Canada Caring Company, Cenovus has committed to setting aside one percent of its pretax profit to provide financial, in-kind and volunteer support to the communities where we live and work.

Shopping for a garden storage shed Storage space is often a coveted commodity. Apartment dwellers seek out more closet space, homeowners may desire more acreage, and even children may want more space for their toys and belongings. The purchase of a storage shed could alleviate some clutter issues and move items outdoors -- creating more space. Household garages are no longer as popular for storing vehicles. Instead, garages are used to store the extra items that do not ďŹ t inside the home. Many people even turn to self-storage units for extra storage space. According to the Self Storage Association, the storage industry earned roughly $20 billion in revenues across North America in 2010. It has also been the fastest-growing segment of the commercial real estate industry for the last 30 years and is considered to be recession-proof. Garden storage sheds present another place where individuals can keep items out of sight but easily accessible. As garages ďŹ ll up with belongings quite quickly, many homeowners think about a shed purchase to at least keep outdoor lawn and garden essentials in their own place. The process of purchasing a shed is not as simple as ďŹ nding the least or most expensive type on the market. There are other factors that come into play when selecting a shed. * Appearance and design: Although the function of a shed is to store items out of sight, the shed itself will be in full view in a yard. Therefore, plenty of homeowners prefer something that has just as much aesthetic appeal as it does storage capacity. An unsightly shed can aect the overall appearance of a property, or even hurt the sale price for homeowners thinking about putting the home on the market. It's important to select a shed in a price range that also complements the style of your home, so it coordinates with other features. Some people choose to have a custom-

built shed that can replicate the architectural style of the home and even features the same siding and ďŹ nishing materials. * Size: Sheds come in a variety of sizes, from compact lockersized sheds to large buildings that may even double as a garden room, pool room or kids' playhouse. Homeowners should keep in mind that the size of the shed may have to meet local municipality rules for additions or structural changes to a property. A larger shed may require a permanent ooring material, such as concrete, and may be subject to permit applications and inspections, whereas a smaller shed may not have such stringent requirements. Furthermore, cer-

tain towns actually may restrict the size and placement of a shed if it interferes with traďŹƒc visibility or impacts a neighbour in a negative way. * Siding materials: Sheds are constructed of various exterior materials. Some of the more affordable options are metal or plywood and particle board. However, these materials can be easily compromised by rain and snow. The most maintenance-free materials are vinyl or molded PVCtype plastics. However, these may look like cookie-cutout units and may not have as much visual appeal. Cedar and wood are popular siding choices but won't be maintenance-free. They need upkeep and also tend to be more

at the entryway provides easy access to the shed as well. Storage sheds can provide much-needed space for homeowners. Certain features as well as cost need to be factored into the decision before purchase. Homeowners should compare chain home improvement stores as well as private retailers to ďŹ nd a shed that is the best ďŹ t.

expensive. But the cost may pay for itself in durability as well as an attractive appearance. * Minor enhancements: Touches like decorative architectural features, window boxes, shutters, or even simply planting shrubs and annuals around the shed can make it an integral part of the landscape instead of simply an eyesore. Double doors will ensure large pieces of equipment can ďŹ t inside the shed. The addition of a pressure-treated ramp

School Museum left in the cold after boiler breakdown Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The heat is on for the East Coulee School Museum to install a new boiler before next winter. In actuality, however, the heat is o. In February of this year, the 80 year old steam boiler at the School Museum broke down and is no longer working. As a result, the School Museum is working towards having a new heating system in the building. “We’re looking for a hot wa-

ter system as a replacement, instead of steam, said Owen Thompson, manager of the School Museum. “It needs to happen between now and Thanksgiving. When the boiler broke, Alberta was still in the throes of winter. “We were lucky it was such a mild winter, otherwise our pipes could have burst, said Thompson. Since mid February the School Museum has relied on a backup gas heater, which is

simply an open ame and a fan. However, the heater does not heat water and still left the building chilly. Thompson had to rely on a space heater to keep warm. The breakdown is made more tragic by the fact that the School Museum prided themselves on the authenticity of their heating system. The boiler was the original one, built in the 1930’s. “It was probably one of the oldest in use in the province, not anymore,â€? said Thompson.

The cause of the boiler breaking down is thought to be steam leaking, through cracks in the cast iron boiler and pipes. A welder was found, which was hard as few welders work with cast iron, to attempt to repair the boiler. When the welder was done, the boiler was reďŹ lled up to the point where the welder stopped and the boiler appeared to work ďŹ ne. However, the boiler soon broke down again. The decision was made to purchase a new one. “As you get further along the pipes, you ďŹ nd more cracks,â€? said Thompson. “We could go back, spend more, and ďŹ x

the cracks we just found, but who’s to say where the cracks stop. The decision was made to scrap that strategy and go for a full replacement.â€? At the moment, Thompson and the East Coulee School Museum board are developing a funding strategy to buy a new hot water system. “We’re looking at somewhere between $60,000 to $80,000 to replace,â€? said Thompson. However, Thompson explained they are working on ďŹ nding matching grants to help pay the cost. The School Museum is optimistic that a new heating system will be ready come the winter.

Forget your troubles, come on McHappy It’s hard not to smile at McHappy Day, as in the end it is for a good Cause. Drumheller celebrated McHappy Day on May 2 and it had great participation from the community, raising $3,115.50. The staff and management of McDonald’s were helped by local notables and members of the business community who pitched in to help

raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta. (l-r) Drumheller McDonald’s owner Summer Manca, Tony Lacher of ATB, Steve Redmond of Walmart, Jenny Vredegoor of Drum FM and Drumheller McDonald’s owner Greg Manca brighten the restaurant.

Owen Thompson, manager of the East Coulee School Musuem, stands beside the old steam boiler in the basement of the museum. To work, coal was fed into the hopper, where it was taken via a belt underneath the boiler to feed the fires which heated water to make steam. The boiler stopped working after it leaked through multiple cracks throughout the system.

One of Alberta’s best-known folk singers is coming to the Drumheller Valley to present stories about the early years of Alberta labour through song. Maria Dunn will lead a trio of performers into the East Coulee School Museum on Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2012 as part of a Province-wide tour to celebrate the Centennial of the Alberta Federation of Labour. Appearing before Maria will be Drumheller native and singer-songwriter Joe Vickers, who will present some of his own songs that were inspired by the rich mining history of the Valley. “I am thrilled to be a part of the AFL’s Centennial celebrations,â€? says Juno-nominated Maria Dunn. “It is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the eorts and accomplishments of the labour movement in Alberta, to remind ourselves where we come from, and to ensure that we preserve these precious, hard-won rights - the right to collective bargaining, unemployment insurance, equal pay for women, public education, living wages, workers’ health and safety standards and compensation, public health care, pensions, and so much more.â€? The concert Maria will present in Drumheller is Troublemakers: Working Albertans, 1900-1950, which documents the history of working people in Alberta’s early days, depicting the resilience and hope which brought them through experiences of immigration, internment, exploitation and the Great Depression. She will sing of union organizers, feminists and radicals who led the earliest struggles, attracting the attention and punishment of the authorities. Appearing with Maria Dunn will be Shannon Johnson (ďŹ ddle) and Terry Morrison (guitar), both well-known artists in their own right. This multimedia event will utilize video to introduce as well as situate songs in their historical context, with visual images of the people and the locations in which the stories occurred. In each case, Maria will add her own personal introduction before presenting the song, a combination which will make for an engaging and educational 60-minute presentation.

Troublemakers is presented as part of the Drumheller Valley’s second annual Mayday Miners' Festival, which will kick-o with a procession in downtown Drumheller on May 5 with people carrying a placard bearing the name of a miner in their family tree. This will be followed by a street festival with Outhouse Games, music, historic characters, and a barbecue. Other events include Pony Days at the Atlas Coal Mine, a display of historic photographs at the new community facility, “Meet a Minerâ€? at historic mine sites, and the Maria Dunn concert at the East Coulee School Museum on May 6.

joy on health and wellbeing. Speaking about her play, $38,000 For a Friendly Face, Dr. Shepherd says, “I’m interested in kindness in difficult situations and with difficult people. Someone says a friendly word at the drivethrough at Tim Horton’s and your life changes for a while. Someone makes sandwiches when your mother dies even if your mother was a difficult woman to like. A husband invites his wife out for coffee dates after she leaves the marriage. Something about the simplicity of these acts of love and kindness knocks me over. I thought these things deserved to be on stage.” $38,000 For a Friendly Face runs until May 12 at Rosebud Theatre, in Rosebud, Alberta with special question and answer talkbacks with the Dr. Kristin Shepherd on Saturday, May 5.

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The Cleats are on as the Drumheller Minor Soccer hits the field for another season. This year the association has strong registration numbers, up over 200, and Wednesday night, players of all ages were out on the field learning the basics and beyond. Board member Marnee Chapin explains this year they introduced a U4 program and it has proven to be popular. The numbers have lagged a bit at the higher end. This year they were only able to field two U12 travel teams. There weren’t enough players to field U14 or U16 teams. “You feel bad for the older kids because if you don’t have enough kids to field a team, there is nothing we can do about it,” said Marnee. “Their only option is to travel elsewhere and join a team in another community that has the numbers.” The association has a full slate

of coaches, although it took a little prodding. The association held an all parent meeting and they were able to fill all the spots. The support didn’t end there. Board member Cam Chapin explains the club had recently acquired new U10 goal posts and cross bars, however they still had their original standards on the field. These were made of drill stem and weighed in the area of 300 pounds. He made a plea and Ryan Bitz, Lee Borsheim and Sheldon Straub were able to dismantle and dispose of the behemoths. Cam said the association appreciates their hard work. Off the field, the club is still actively fundraising for it's field house at the soccer pitch. They continue to work at their barbecues as well as other fundraising initiatives. If you have a young player interested in hitting the field, Marnee said there are still spots on teams available until May 12.
