Charges laid in animal cruelty case Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller
Charges have been laid against an East Coulee farmer following an investigation into animal cruelty in late April, Drumheller RCMP said Wednesday. John Barry Graham, 54, will face the following charges under the Criminal Code: causing damage or injury to animals, disobeying a court order, and common nuisance. He also faces two charges under the Animal Protection Act of causing animals to be in distress. Graham’s first court date has been set for June 17 in Drumheller Provincial Court. Some of the seized animals have been moved to a rural location near Brooks, Alberta, as this is a better location for their health, RCMP said. A few of the animals remain at a livestock handling facility at Brooks, Alberta as the rural location would not be suitable for their transfer. All of the animals remain under the care of a certified veterinarian. The final deposition of these animals will be decided by the court. Graham had expressed interest in reclaiming the animals but they remain in the care of the Alberta SPCA. Alberta SPCA members began rounding up the livestock on April 18 following a complaint over one of

Graham’s animals running astray of the property. ASPCA members noticed 340 livestock, including horse and cattle, dehydrated and in a malnourished state. About 12 cows and horses were found deceased and RCMP say “three or four” horses had to be euthanized because they were unable to be transported. They collected the animals and sent them to Bow Slope Auction Mart near Brooks to be assessed and treated by a veterinarian. The investigation is conducted jointly by the RCMP amd the Alberta SPCA.

Students bring Rachel’s Challenge to Drumheller schools
Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Drumheller junior high and high school students were awakened to the realities of bullying on Wednesday, May 4. Through a student initiative, pupils from DVSS and St. Anthony’s School were able to take in the presentation Rachel’s Challenge, a powerful program with the goal to challenge every person to create a positive culture change in school and in the wider community. Rachel Scott, a student who was struck down at the age of 17, inspired Rachel’s Challenge. She was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting. Her kindness and the contents of her six diaries became the foundation for the program. A group of students took part in a the Connections Program at Kamp Kiwanis in March. According to George Taven, Connections program director, “the goal of the Connections Program is to provide high school students with an immersion op-
portunity that creates a better understanding of the multicultural nature of our schools and society.” For the students’ final project, they made bringing Rachel’s Challenge to students a reality. “Six students from DVSS took part in the program as well as a number of students from St. Anthony’s School. Our Connections students at DVSS worked extremely hard to make Rachel’s Challenge a reality and we think the program really made a positive impact on our student body,” said teacher Jeff Brooks. In a whirlwind effort, the students went to the community, and in three weeks were able to raise the $4,000 needed for the program from local businesses and individuals. In the morning on Wednesday, May 4, junior high students from the two Drumheller schools participated, while in the afternoon, high school students took in the presentation. There was also an evening presentation for the community.
Students were able to raise the funds needed to bring Rachel’s Challenge to area students and community members. At the presentation Wednesday morning, May 4 were (back; l-r) Rachel’s Challenge presenter Neil McIntyre, Cody Bryant, Darren Bryant, Mayor Terry Yemen, Doug Lubinski and

While it took centuries for the wind and rain to sculpt the unique and world famous Hoodoos, a few careless steps or someone scratching their initials can take years off the life of the sentinels. The Hoodoos are expected to be open for visitation come May long weekend. The site of the popular tourist destination has undergone a facelift over the off-season with the goal of protecting them for future generations to enjoy. The Royal Tyrrell Museum, which has been acting as a steward for the Hoodoos, has commissioned a new walkway system that takes advantage of natural vistas to enjoy the attraction while at the same time minimizing the impact. Andrew Neuman, executive director of the Tyrrell Museum, said the site should be up and running for the season. “There is no path that walks up between the Hoodoos, instead of that we’ve installed some stairways and some pathways so you can get some good viewing opportunities without getting in too close to the physical structures,” he said. Village on Diet’s future not deterring health enthusiasts Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller With the fate uncertain for the second season of CBC’s weightloss show Village on a Diet, for
which Drumheller was in the running to provide the setting, CBC has hinted Drumheller could be featured in their healthy lifestyle campaign Live Right Now. “It’s connected to Village on a Distributor for the Great-West Life Assurance Company

Diet in a lot of ways... and they have encouraged Drumheller to sign up,” said the town’s Director of Community Services Paul Salvatore. “They’re interested in us participating in a challenge with another community in our region.” Salvatore said they’ve hinted that a film crew may be sent to Drumheller sometime to feature Drumheller for Live Right Now, although nothing definitive has been said. “We want to continue that message, but if we’re able to put forward something kind of neat or cool they may come down,” said Salvatore. “If they want to sign us up for another season of Village on a Diet we’ll be one of the ones who they will consider again.” Tara Semchuk has led the group DrumHealthier after news broke Drumheller was vying for a position on the CBC show. ing events. “We don’t need a TV show to motivate us at all,” said Semchuk. “It’s still going strong.” Although the prospect of being on the show started the initiative, participation numbers have continued to grow. “There’s more motivation now because people are more conscientious of obesity being an issue.
They’re more apt to notice things and Village on a Diet helped. People they featured on the show made progress, and it inspired us,” said Semchuk. Semchuk said upcoming events for DrumHealthier include a boot camp (May 17) and community food kitchen starting in September.

Austin and Parker Knibb joined the Las Vegas Swim Club (LVSC) to continue their training for Canadian Nationals, during Easter Break while on vacation in the city of “Lost Wages.” The boys enjoyed visiting the LVSC and having an opportunity to see what it’s like to be a part of a club from another part of the world. They were a bit apprehensive as they didn’t know what to expect. The biggest difference is that
Canadian pools are 25m long, and American pools are 25 yards, so you get to the end much quicker. Austin said, “Everything is bigger in America, except the pool!” The coaches and athletes at LVSC were awesome and it made for some good competition. Austin and Parker were also joined in Las Vegas by visiting swimmers from Florida, Germany and the Marshall Islands. photo submitted
