The Downtown Drumheller Parking Task Force delivered its recommendations to Drumheller Town Council on the future of parking changes to the core, however the recommendations are getting a mixed reception from some of those affected. The task force made its recommendations, and council unanimously accepted the documents. Some of the recommendations included parallel parking along 3rd Avenue between Highway 9 (2nd Street West) and 1st Street West. The rest of 3rd Avenue will remain angle parking, however the angle will be changed, which will widen the driving lane and improve visibility. The formation of the task force came after a groundswell of residents made their voices known to council through a survey published in The Drumheller Mail, spearheaded by a group of downtown merchants. Sylvia Madsen owner of Café Italiano was part of the initial campaign. She tells inSide Drumheller she has mixed feelings about the recommendations. “It’s a compromise. It’s not the perfect solution, I don’t think there will ever be a perfect solution. I don’t think there would ever be something that everyone could agree on,” she said. “It was a surprise it took so long to get to this point, and I’m surprised the town did the right thing.” Another part of the changes is to reconfigure the intersection of Highway 9 and 3rd Avenue West. Under the new plan, eastbound lanes will remain relatively unchanged. There will be two westbound lanes at the intersection; one will be a left turn lane, while the other will be a thru traffic/right hand turning lane. The traffic light cycles will be amended to suit the new configuration. Madsen said as a business owner she can see the good and bad points. She understands parallel parking needed to be implemented in order to change the intersection of Highway 9 and 3rd Avenue, but also understands it could impact businesses. She does like the recommendation to change the angle of the parallel parking. “I think it is better there is a 10 per cent grade (change in angle of parking). People will
out,” she said. Of the entire plans, “I think it is better than what they originally planned, when they said ‘deal with the cards you’re dealt with.’ That was harsh,” she said. “At least this was a little more
message. Democracy has not been served.” He said in light of the survey, the task force should have never been struck, and it will have an impact on his business. “Now the question is not if
they did a heck of a lot of work in a short amount of time, they were very committed. At times I think it would be nice to have a committee between the Town and everyone else… I think it would take the

democratic.” Barry Fullerton was chair of the task force and said the process worked well. “I have said it before, they were really a good group to work with,” said Fullerton. He told inSide Drumheller the work of the group was meticulous and they left no stone unturned when looking for suitable options for the downtown parking and traffic flow issues. He concedes it is a compromise, but also indicates he feels the group was representative of many views of downtown merchants and residents alike. This includes business directly affected by the change to parallel parking to 3rd Avenue. Doug Wade, whose business is on the stretch that will now have parallel parking, isn’t as warm to the plan. He has gone from being upset about the issue to being upset about his take on the democratic process. “On February 12, downtown Drumheller delivered at great expense of time and money the most important information council needed,” said Wade. “The overwhelming majority of residents, 1,680, wanted parking left as is. Also the 200plus members of the Chamber
there is going to be a loss, now it is how much,” said Wade. For Madsen one of the good things that came out of the process was the work put together by downtown businesses.
pressure off the town, and it would open up lines of communication,” she said. “I think it was awesome to get all the businesses to work together and find common ground and work to a common goal.”

Drumheller residents join forces to Ride to Conquer Cancer Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller
Another Drumheller resident has committed to conquering cancer by participating in The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Our March 31 edition of The Mail told you about Cassandra Knight joining the ride, now Victor Bustamante, who works
at The Royal Tyrrell Museum, will join thousands of other men and women in a historymaking ride June 26 and 27, 2010. Bustamante will take part in a two-day 200 kilometre ride through the Rocky Mountains with a night of camping. Friends in Calgary encouraged him to join them on the Ride to Conquer Cancer after

he started a new training regime to get himself fitter when he turned 30 last September. “At first, I thought there was no way I could pull that off. But then as I was getting fitter, I felt I was able to take the challenge on, so decided to join the ride,” Bustamante told inSide Drumheller. He has now started a full training regime, determined to get himself fit for the ride. When the weather permits, he bikes around Drumheller using two different types of bikes, a standard one and a recumbent one, where you cycle laying down, or swims at the Aquapex. “I think it is going to be quite challenging. My longest distance so far in one day was 80 kilometres. I could have gone further but then the biggest challenge is doing it again the next day. I think the first day won’t be much of a challenge, but the second day, being injury free and ready to go will be the hardest part.” Like Knight, Bustamante keeps a blog of his training. “If people are coming to donate, I feel it is a courtesy to keep them updated with what I am doing and the effort I am putting into it.” With one in three Canadians diagnosed with cancer in their
lifetime, Bustamante is rallying the cause to support breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at Alberta Cancer Foundation. Like the many who are undertaking the ride, the disease has affected people close to him and he is hoping to raise $2,500 to help with research. Right now, back home in Peru, his dear aunt Norma is battling colon and liver cancers, and although she is having a very hard time with the treatment, she is still fighting. One of his co-workers was also affected and had to give up work due to difficulties dealing with cancer and its treatment.
In Knight’s article, she extended an open invitation to be joined during her training. Following this, she was contacted by another Drumheller resident, Stephanie Black, who is doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer. inSide Drumheller has now also put her in touch with Bustamante.

Thrill of victory, agony of de-feet Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
More than 50 men made the trek in high heels from Drumheller Co-op to Freson IGA, and along the way raised $17,000. The first Drumheller Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Wednesday, May 12, by all accounts was a success. A greater than expected turnout, combined with a large commitment from walkers and residents who donated to the cause, resulted in the event smashing its goals. “Walk a Mile is an international event that goes all over Canada, the US, and also Eu-
rope. We brought it here to Drumheller, never dreaming our community would respond so resoundingly,” said Marian Ewing, president of the Big Country Anti-Violence Association. “This is a serious subject, violence and sexual assault, and touches many hearts. Our community rallies against it.” Walkers were eager to hit the course, if only to take off the bright red four-inch heels at the finish line. Along with the shoes, some dressed up, some carried signs, some played the drums, and some marched in silence, wearing black shirts with red and
white letters simply stating “I am man enough to walk a mile in her shoes.” At the end of the road, they were greeted with a barbecue and even the opportunity for a pedicure and foot massage. They also shared the camaraderie of fellow hikers. Despite stubbed toes, swollen ankles and blisters here and there, spirits were high. Half of the funds raised by the event will remain with the BCAVA to support transportation, emergency funding and assistance for those in need. The other half will go to support Communities Against Abuse, an organization based
in Stettler that serves East Central Alberta. Incorporated in 1988, the organization runs preventive programs for parents, families and students. It also has a treatment service dealing with victims of abuse, both children and adults who were victimized as children, family members of victims and perpetrators of abuse. Judy Beebe, program director for the organization, says they have treated victims from the Drumheller area and will use the funds to continue its services. She told the crowd gathered at the end of the walk she was encouraged to see so many
men participate. “I’ve always said until we really get some men on board with us, it’s just a bunch of women fighting the issue,” she said. “This shows me that we really have some men on board and that it’s not just a one gender issue, and that’s really important to me.” For Ewing, the walk sent a clear message. “Today we are helping a group of people who desperately need our compassion. On their behalf, I thank you sincerely. Your message is strong, ‘stop sexual violence and gender violence,’” said Ewing.
Fraser Beebe, right, was the top fundraiser at the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on Wednesday, May 12. He was able to raise $2175. Lyle Rowe of the Big Country Anti-Violence Assocation presented Beebe his trophy.
More than 50 men braved red pumps to Walk a Mile to support victims of violence and sexual offenses, and to raise awareness. While totals are still coming in, at the event it was announced walkers raised almost $17,000 .

a bit more. That’s taking all my spare time at the moment. I don’t think this will change much after I’m done with the ride, though. I like how my body has reacted to all this effort. If I have any spare time I like to spend it with friends, making a good meal and relaxing. Your life’s best achievement? Making it on my own and making my parents proud. What are your strengths? I’m good with people, very approachable and like to help others. I’m pretty good at “figuring things out” and finding solutions to problems. Any weaknesses? Sometimes I can be too much of a perfectionist and demand the same from others. Any bad habits? Going to bed late... It’s 1:15 AM on a weekday as I’m writing this. Eating too much (rarely junk food
though). I love good food! Three words that best describe you? Positive, happy, friendly. What makes you happy? Sunsets and having a good time with good friends and good food. If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? To take away all the suffering, the injustice and ignorance from this world. If you could have one super power what would it be? To be super strong, like Superman is strong. If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year old kid, what advice would you give yourself? Always do what you feel is right. Words to live by? There’s no wrong or right, but I’m sure there’s good and bad. (E. Vedder)

Name: Victor Bustamante. Age: 30. Job: Food services manager at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Employer: Compass Group Canada. What do you like about your job? The “Can-Do” attitude of the people I work with, and that every day presents a different challenge. How long have you lived in Drumheller? For about two and a half years. If not all your life, where do you come from and what brought you to Drumheller? I’m originally from Peru and I’ve lived in a few places in Ontario, then moved to Calgary and now Drumheller. I came here because of work. What do you like best about Drumheller? It’s such a unique town; almost surreal with all the dinosaurs around. I also really like seeing the sunset from the valley, just before sunlight disappears and the hills are coloured orange while the coyotes howl in the warm summer air. If there were one thing you could change about Drumheller, what would it be? I would make it more bicyclefriendly and add a good sushi restaurant. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? It needs to be somewhere tropical by the ocean. Either Hawaii or the beaches of Northern Peru would make me happy. Have you ever taken a life changing decision? Yes, two that I can think of: First, staying in Canada when the rest of my family went back to Peru about 9 years ago. Second would be last October when I decided it was time to take care of my health by becoming more active and losing some weight. I’ve felt great since then. What do you do in your spare time? Right now I’m focused on training for the Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. I’m training for the ride by running, riding my bike (and trike) and also recently started swimming to help me

Drumheller residents to see tax increase of three percent submitted | inSide Drumheller
Drumheller Town Council gave 1st and 2nd readings for the 2010 taxation to be levied against assessable property within the municipality at the May 10th Council meeting. In March 2009, Town Council authorized a three year budget which included a 3 percent annual increase in municipal tax revenue, a 1.5 percent municipal tax revenue increase due to new assessment growth and increase in service fees of approximately 3 percent. The estimated municipal expenditures and transfers set out in the budget for the Town of Drumheller is $14,785,349 and municipal revenues and transfers from all sources other than taxation is estimated at $7,981,342 and the balance of $6,790,302 is to be raised by general taxation. Mayor Bryce Nimmo said “Council is required to levy on the assessed value of all property tax rates that are sufficient to meet the estimated expenditures and
requisitions. Our budget was approved last year and this three year budget has allowed us to focus on service delivery resulting in improved operations.” CAO Ray Romanetz stated, “The 2010 budget provides for a 3 percent increase in taxes collected compared to 2009. The change in taxes paid by the individual taxpayer will be dependent on the changes in their assessment.” The Town of Drumheller budget is available at www. dinosaurvalley.com

Last time they were in the valley to play was for Canada Day celebrations last year. About a year ago when they appeared, their remake of Fleetwood Mac’s Second Hand News was on the radio. Today they have a new single in heavy rotation. Searchin for You has broke the Canadian Top 20, and the band has a new album ready to drop on June 1. That’s What I Am will be on store shelves at leading music
retailers such as Wal-Mart and HMV as well as iTunes. According to a release, Nashville songwriter Byron Hill, who has written scores of hit songs for everyone from Reba McEntire to George Straight, produced the album. That’s What I Am is a reflection of Hey Romeo’s commitment to their craft, whether it’s defining a great melody line, polishing a glistening chorus, or putting a new spin on a universal theme. “You’re supposed to get better with age, and I think that is exactly what we’ve done with That’s What I Am says singer Rob Shapiro, who was also named Keyboard Player of the Year by the CCMA in 2009. “Better songs and better singing from all of us. Byron’s intense approach to writing and his commitment to getting the best possible performances from everyone has paid off.” The album was recorded in Nashville and Saskatoon, That’s
What I Am dishes out a perfect balance of vocalist Stacie Roper’s emotive and charged, yet sweet voice, alongside those of the testosterone driven pipes of her pals and partners Rob and Darren Gusnowsky. Those voices are painted onto material that one minute can take the listener on a deep personal ride, and the next provide the ultimate escape. The Dinosaur Derby is coming up fast. It is on Father’s Day weekend and features the top drivers of the WCPA Dodge Pro Tour on the aptly christened “Half Mile of Hell.” Along with the races, the Stampede and Ag Society has a full slate of events planned including the Hey Romeo’s performance on Saturday night. Downtown Drumheller and local businesses are also getting in on celebrating the chuckwagon races. Keep reading The Drumheller Mail and InSide Drumheller for more details.
Volkswagen campaign features valley landmarks Volkswagen is the latest company to use Drumheller as a backdrop for its advertising campaigns. Last weekend, crews from Untitled Films were in the valley filming scenes for a Volkswagen commercial. Residents and visitors may have encountered some small traffic delays as the crew worked on the feature. The crew filmed at The World’s Largest Dinosaur as well as Dorothy and East Coulee. At times the weather threatened to affect the crew’s progress, but they continued Sunday undeterred. Last fall Honda was in the valley using the valley for one of its campaigns, reported to feature Honda’s advanced robot ASIMO. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Badlands Basketball is back, and has expanded. The season has already begun for spring leaguers, and the scope of the organization has grown. This is the second year they have had a junior program, and the first year they have had an organized adult division. “We are up to 100 kids,” said league organizer Chad Pidhaichuk. Not only are the numbers strong but they have also grown geographically as the organization expand sits reach. A junior team from Hanna is coming to play. This year there is also representation from St. Anthony’s School and a strong core of girl’s players from Morrin School, as well as players from Acme. “We have branched out quite a ways,” said Pidhaichuk. The adult division has also taken off. “The reasons for the new adult division is we have the college players coming back for the summer to play. They are coming back to coach and organize,” said Pidhaichuk. “They are all taking part, so they are giving back.” The success of basketball in Drumheller and the effectiveness of getting court time in the off-season can be measured in the success of the players. Tyler Fournier is playing college ball at King’s College in Edmonton, Jason Aiken is at Lakeland College
in Lloydminster and James Fournier, Joey Browning and Will Belliveau play for Olds College. Jasmine Mraz and Kirby Travis both play for Olds. Pidhaichuk adds the adult league helps raise funds for the travel team to be able to play in tournaments. This year Pidhaichuk said the calibre of play is strong and many of the games are down to the wire. This has been the most evenly matched teams we have ever had,” he said. “We’ve had six boys games so far and one went into over time, and there has been a couple two-point games. There was an eight-point game and that has been the biggest margin of victory.” While the league is strong, despite many other sports in the valley competing for players, Pidhaichuk said it would be difficult to expand. “Right now even if we wanted to, we couldn’t add any more teams just because we don’t have the facilities to run it,” said Pidhaichuk. "We could have taken the girls team and divided them into four because this is the most girls we have had, but we just don’t have the gym for it.” He is grateful for the sponsorship from Encana, Myles Travis, the Kinsmen and the Newcastle Recreation Association that helped keep the registration costs reasonable. The season continues until the end of June.
