Coin toss comes up Drumheller...again! “It looks like it’ll be Drumheller for another 100 years,” said Sam Drumheller (left, played by Eric Neuman) after a redo of the famous coin toss that decided the name of the town 100 years ago. Drumheller tossed the coin with Thomas Greentree (Michael Todor) during Drumheller’s centennial celebrations on Wednesday, May 15. The Badlands Community Facility was packed Wednesday afternoon as Drumheller celebrated the official day it was incorporated 100 years ago. “It went awesome. I’m so thrilled. People came and enjoyed themselves. Everyone was in a great mood. Also, the people who came were all ages. We are 100 years now, so we want the youth to come out and support Drumheller,” said Sharel Shoff, chair of Drumheller’s centennial committee. The afternoon opened with a barbecue and entertainment by local musicians Joe Vickers and Pat Parsons for Drumheller’s eldest residents. “Today was interesting in that we had four people over 100 years old, one that is 93, and another that is 92. It’s pretty awesome to have them at our centennial,” said Shoff. In a touching moment Blake Vickers and Dr. Brummy Aiello cut the centennial cake. Afterwards, the general public arrived for the celebrations. Dignitaries gave a few words about Drumheller’s 100th birthday. “I have thoroughly enjoyed this day in

Drumheller. It’s been a real pleasure to be here,” said MP Crowfoot Kevin Sorenson. “This is a very special day. The exact day local officials secured the future of the Village of Drumheller. The date Drumheller was officially incorporated.” MLA DrumhellerStettler Rick Strankman congratulated Drumheller as well. “One of my great pleasures in my newly elected position is going throughout the constituency and recognizing 100 years of residents or (municipal) incorporation. I really enjoy seeing these historical pictures that signify the values and the roots of the province of Alberta. Hardworking, honesty, and loyalty, I want to congratulate the town for its achievements and each and every one of the residents,” said Strankman. The celebrations closed with a skit, performed by Michael Todor and Eric Neuman, reenacting the fabled coin toss that decided the name of the town, followed by another cake cutting with Mayor Terry Yemen and Strankman. “I think it’s gone incredibly well. It’s a good day to be mayor,” said Yemen. “I’m very happy with the turnout, the events, and the weather is great.” Though the official centennial day is over, there are more centennial celebrations planned. “I know for sure Cathy Smoliak, our FCSS coordinator has

started planning. We, as a (centennial) committee, will help her with that and do whatever we need to do. If people want to come down on Canada Day, they should come. That’s the weekend to come,” said Shoff. “We’ll probably have a meeting within a couple weeks. Then we’ll come out with more information about what’s happening.”

Town outlines summer street improvements

ENTER TO WIN

Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller residents will be getting a smoother ride through parts of town this summer. The Town of Drumheller is close to finalizing their plans for the annual street improvement program. If all goes well, crews could be resurfacing several major streets in the near future. Bidding for the contract closed earlier this week, with a recommendation to be presented to Council on May 21. “We hope to be in a position to award the tender on May 21 to get the project started as quickly as possible,” said Allan Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Drumheller. The streets destined for work this summer include 5th Street East between 6th Avenue and Riverside Drive, half of the road to the Drumheller Institution, part of 8th Avenue, and part of 3rd Street SW. In Nacmine, 1st Street between Hunter Drive

When the work proceeds, the highest priority is 5th Street East to ensure there is no conflict between road construction and the Tour of Alberta race rolling through Drumheller on September 6. “It was brought up that 5th Street has to be done well in advance of the

bike race or after. Anytime we’ve run (a project) into the fall, there have been issues. We’d rather get things done before,” said Kendrick. Council is expected to make a decision to award the tender for the street improvements at their next meeting on Tuesday, May 21.

Encana unveils CNG filling station Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Encana oďŹƒcially unveiled its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) ďŹ lling station on Wednesday afternoon. Encana’s vice president –demand development and policy, Matt Most, was in from Denver for the facility tour. Drumheller-Stettler MLA, Rick Strankman, and local politicians came out to learn more about the station. “This is a real opportunity to bring locally produced fuel to be used by local consumers to drive much cleaner products,â€? said Most. “We are really happy to develop this station, not only so we can bring natural gas into our own operations, but we also invited the community to participate.â€? Encana has made efforts to convert about a

quarter of its eet in the US and Canada to natural gas. While there are only a handful of vehicles working out of the Drumheller oďŹƒce, there are 40-50 operating out of its Strathmore oďŹƒce, which also has a ďŹ lling station. A third Encana ďŹ lling station has been installed in Sierra, in northeastern B.C. Ben Coates of Encana explains the station is manufactured by IMW Industries and arrived self-contained on a skid. It hooks up to the local residential supply and is able to dispense CNG at pressures for public and eet use. The bulk of station use right now is Encana’s eet, although there has been trailer tank traďŹƒc, which is buying CNG for oil and gas ďŹ eld applications. A few days ago, Luigi Vescarelli, community relations advisor said they had their ďŹ rst private passenger vehicle ďŹ lled up. Most says many markets beyond the U.S. and Canada have tapped into the potential of CNG, and in North America, it is starting to catch on. “There are 13 million

the United States. We are making it here and there is a real drive to us that product here.â€? He said more manufacturers are making vehicles, which are coming right o the line which can utilize CNG. There are also aftermarket companies that are performing conversions. A typical conversion would cost in the area of $10,000. In a vehicle that is driven 40,000- 50,000 kilometres a year, the expected pay out is two years. The mileage per tank is equivalent to a conventional engine, although power output does drop. The ďŹ nal piece of the equation is access to CNG for customers. â€œâ€ŚAll the pieces line up; having the fuel aordable, the stations available and the vehicles available, and it is all happening now,â€? he said. Most says beyond private cars, the biggest users of CNG are medium duty trucking such as busses and refuse vehicles. “The type of large vehicles that tend to return to base every night,â€? he said, adding there could even be agricultural applications to explore. “The opportunity for natural gas to play in the transportation industry is just huge,â€? he said.

Clearwater County called for help and the Drumheller Fire Department has responded. The county near the Hamlet of Nordegg has been fighting a wildfire all week threatening the community. There was a call out for assistance and the Drumheller Department has offered some Help. Drumheller Fire Chief Bill Bachynski tells inSide Drumheller that firefighters Ryan Young, Michael Devaleriola and Steve Hatt have all volunteered to spend two days battling the blaze. Another firefighter is also looking at possibly going if he is able. “We are fortunate enough we have a good turnout, so I can spare a few members,” said Chief Bachynski. Hatt has been a member of the department for less than a year. He says they are being deployed to act as guardians to the Hamlet. The firefighters are scheduled to depart Saturday at 10 a.m. and finish up Sunday night. Bachynski says there is no request for any apparatus. “They have a lot of pumps there, they are just short of people,” said Bachynski. This is not the first time the Drumheller Firefighters have ventured outside the valley to lend a hand. On top of the many mutual aid agreements it honours, a few years ago when wildfires were raging in British Columbia, the Drumheller Fire Department sent two members.

Four cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease have been confirmed in four children at a local daycare facility. Earlier this week, Little Explorers Childcare and Daycare received word four children, out of roughly 50 who use the facility, had come down with the disease. The daycare has been swift to respond and remains open. “We’ve had four confirmed cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease,” said Nola Wallace, director of Little Explorers. “We saw some symptoms here, told the par-

ents, and suggested they see a doctor. That’s how we confirmed what it was. We contacted Public Health, posted signs, and alerted parents. It’s a highly contagious disease, so the children who had it are at home.” In addition, the daycare staff disinfected everything at the daycare to ensure the disease is not transmitted to others. “We do everything we can. There’s a lot of handwashing going on and we’ve bleached everything down,” said Wallace. “We work very hard to keep things clean, but when something like this happens, we work extra hard.”

WORKS St. Anthony’s plans entrepreneurship program Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

It is not by accident that many community leaders the world over, are entrepreneurs. They have carved their own niche in the world. St. Anthony’s School is taking steps to offer students a chance to look at entrepreneurship and create their own future. “Entrepreneurship is a good fit for this community. We rely heavily on the entrepreneurs in our community. They are the ones who drive our economy,” said Principal JoAnne Akerboom, who is spearheading the program at the school. “We need more of them and we need to take more time to understand and value their contribution.“ On Tuesday, May 21, Akerboom is holding a session in Padua Hall to explain the new entrepreneurship courses the school is planning to offer to students in Grades 9-12. She was involved in developing, training and delivering entrepreneurship education in Nova Scotia for

students from kindergarten to Grade 12 a well as working with youth up to 30 outside the traditional school system. This was in collaboration with the Nova Scotia departments of education, economic development a n d c o m munity ser vices as well as the Atlantic Canada O pp ortunitie s Agency and Human Resources Development Canada. “Our work eventually led to the start of an innovation centre that worked with people from 65 countries. The most amazing result was

having people realize they can create their own future,” she said. The school is planning to use the curriculum from the Nova Scotia Department of Education. A common outcome of entrepreneurship education is that students feel more self-reliant and realize they have control over their own futures.” She says already there is interest at the school. “We did a presentation and asked who was interested and I have no doubt we will have a great class. I am hoping that after the presentation to parents and the community, students will have additional encouragement to explore the world of entrepreneurship and take more control of creating their own futures,” she said. As the program takes off, there may be ways for the business community in Drumheller to get involved. “The involvement of the community would enhance the program significantly and I hope to find business people who are willing to mentor our students as they start their ventures,” she said. The meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday at Padua Hall.

Caroline: I always like coming here, it’s not my first time by far. Bea: It’s cool! Devon: They love dinosaurs. Anything you’d recommend seeing near Martinsville? There’s a Western Development Museum in Saskatoon, which is pretty good, but there’s not much to see in Martinsville. It’s pretty much a suburb of Saskatoon. It’s pretty quiet. Would you come back to Drumheller? Every time we come through we always have to stop to at least look around.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Dan MacDermid had his very rare 1951 Frazer out at the Drumheller Centennial car show last Wednesday afternoon. The Frazer was one of the flagship lines of the Kaiser Frazer Car Company and was built from 1946 to 1951. It was powered by a Continental Red Seal 226 CID ”Supersonic”

HAPPENINGS Surveyors leave mark on Homestead Museum Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

As Alberta was settled, part and parcel with the adventurous pioneers were the surveyors, charting the territory. The Alberta Land Surveyors Association celebrated its centennial in 2009, and they are helping the Homestead Museum celebrate the Drumheller Centennial with its exhibit “Making Their Mark.” Last week the exhibit was installed at the Homestead Museum. It was created to celebrate the centennial of the Alberta Land Surveyors Association and has been on display all over the province. While much of the original survey of the province was completed years before, after Alberta became a province, it passed the Land Surveyors’ Act, and the Dominion Land Surveyors then practicing in the province organized. The display features a campsite typical of what a surveyor would have lived in when working in the field. It also has all kinds of historical artifacts and equipment related to the industry; everything from calculators to monuments. There is also an audiovisual display and a handson activity centre for students. Kerry Barrett, administrator for the Alberta Land Surveyors Association also worked on the history and the display. He says the “Made to

According to the Alberta Land Surveyors Association, the exhibit in general is related to all kinds of areas of study including Aboriginal Studies, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences and Social Studies. Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

“What matters most is the dash between the years.” Linda Ellis Bryan Allen “Bucky Buckskin” Baxter of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Hospital comforted by family and friends. As one of the original employees of Foothills Hospital, Bryan worked there from before the hospital actually opened until he retired in 2011 after 45 years of serving the community and forging many friendships. Bryan was the PROUD grandpa of eight grandchildren; Trevor, Amanda, Melanie, Mackenzie, Ronan, Gavan, Justin and Canyon; father to Todd (Bonnie) Baxter, Glenn (Nicole) Baxter and Laurie (Shayne) Cassidy and brother to Bev (Art) Young, Carol Baxter, Linda (Garth) Bennett and seven wonderful step-sisters. He is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Hazel Baxter (nee Monkman) and other family members and friends. Our dad lived by his own words, “Find joy in everything you do” and shared that joy without hesitation. A celebration of Bryan’s life is open to all his friends and family at Oak Park Church of Christ (11263 Oakfield Drive SW, Calgary) on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Bryan’s family through www.evanjstrong.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the organizations near and dear to Bryan’s heart: Canadian Bible Society - Bike for Bibles (www.bike4bibles.ca) or Rosscarrock Church of Christ - Hazel Baxter Memorial Fund (1140-40th Street SW, Calgary, T3C 1W5, www.rosscarrockchurch.ca, (403) 249-5293). Panic Squad takes stage Saturday at FAITH FEST Submitted | inSide Drumheller

The zany comedy-improvisation troupe, Panic Squad, will be on the stage at Rosebud’s FAITH FEST this Saturday. FAITH FEST, the next series of events in the new eclectic and dynamic Rosebud Presents entertainment package, is shaping up to be an incredible three days of concerts, comedy, fellowship, prayer and worship. “FAITH FEST will provide an opportunity for RCA to engage in important discussions about faith, art and worship,” says Adam Furfaro, Executive Director of Rosebud Centre of the Arts. “It is an opportunity for us to embrace our Christian faith and join

together in prayer and proclaim unity in Christ.” On Saturday, May 18, The Panic Squad will prove comedy can be nutty and sacred at the same time. Panic Squad cast members come from all walks of life, but what they share is a God-given and God-honouring talent to make people laugh, a love for entertaining, and a commitment to only settle for the highest quality of improv comedy. Ertman describes them as “some of the coolest guys I’ve ever met. There is real heart here. And when you combine that with their wit and outlandishness, anything can happen!” Panic Squad will also lead a workshop at the Studio Stage from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm

on Saturday, with special pricing offered for anyone wanting to attend both the workshop and the performance. Rosebud School of the Arts founder, LaVerne Erickson, notes that the organization has a long-standing tradition with such ministerial sessions. “We used to do these gatherings yearly. I am definitely excited we are beginning again. For forty years we have been on a journey of the Creative Spirit being. This seems as natural as breathing.” It was Erickson who prompted Furfaro to re-introduce the ministerial event and it was an invitation by Pas-

tor Wall to lead worship for a similar event in Drumheller which cemented the idea. “I am thrilled we are going back to our roots with this. It’s the 40th anniversary and 30th anniversary of the school and the theatre company, respectively. What a wonderful way to celebrate and thank God for blessing this organization,” says Furfaro. He adds, “Morris has secured some exceptional talent. It is going to be an enriching, Spirit-filled and faith-fuelled week. We invite everyone, from all faith backgrounds, to attend.”

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist My sister has a dairy-free diet and these are two of her delicious cake recipes that she relies on. (she does not eat the icing, but it is included because it is a good one) I made the first one and froze the leftovers for trifle. The icing is sprinkled with green for grass because it was a soccer-themed cake, which you may like to try this time of year! JUDY CAKES This is a war time cake that is quick, easy and yummy. It’s particularly good for trifle because it is rather dense. Combine 3 c flour, 2 c sugar, 1/2 c cocoa and 2 tsp soda. Add 1 tsp vanilla, 2 T vinegar, 3/4 c oil and 2 c water. Mix in the blender or beat well. Grease and flour a 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 35-40 mins.

New ideas. New approaches.

This is our favourite chocolate cake. Combine 2 c flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp soda, 3/4 c cocoa and 2 c sugar. Add 1 c oil, 1 c hot coffee and 1 c milk (I’ve used 2 c water instead of coffee and milk /or coffee and water /or water and almond milk - so basically 2 c liquid) Beat on medium for 2 mins. Add 2 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla and beat 2 mins more. It’s a thin batter. I’ve always made three 8” round layers as in the recipe but you can use it for everything , including a 9x13 cake. Bake @ 325 for 25-30 mins for layers. Creamy icing Cook 1 c milk and 5 Tbsp flour until a thick blob. Cover and cool completely in the fridge. Beat 1 c butter, 1 c sugar and 1 tsp vanilla until creamy. Add the cooled blob and beat for 10 mins.

Tyrrell reopens Cretaceous Garden Submitted | inSide Drumheller

A three-tonne petrified tree stump, two gingko trees and an intact dinosaur footprint found just steps from the museum are treasures in the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s Cretaceous Garden, reopening Friday, May 17, after almost two years of renovations. The garden was closed in the fall of 2011 to allow improvements to visitor flow and accessibility for special needs patrons. During the process it was completely emptied of plants, with some of the more rare specimens housed offsite. Drawing from Alberta’s fossil record, the museum’s horticulturalist worked closely with palaeontologists to locate appropriate materials to recreate Alberta’s Cretaceous Period landscape. The redesigned garden allows visitors to experience a lush natural environment similar to the one dinosaurs inhabited 75 to 66 million years ago, when Alberta was covered in swamps, ponds and forests. It features ferns, tropical palms and flowering plants that are living relatives of the plant species that thrived in ancient Alberta. The Cretaceous Garden also simulates Alberta’s ancient climate, which was warm-temperate and seasonal. The change of seasons is replicated through adjustments in lighting conditions, temperature, and variations in watering amounts throughout the year.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum Cretaceous Garden will be open to the public this weekend. The garden has been closed for nearly two years for renovations. One of the biggest new features is a raised walkway for guests to view what the plant life would have been like during the late Cretaceous Period in Drumheller. photo submitted
