explains McNichol. “She said, ‘Yeah, absolutely!’” Through collections taken at the Drumheller Health Centre, Elim Pentecostal Church, IGA, The Pioneer Trail Centre and DVSS, the bus was stuffed with all kinds of items from toiletries, clothing, diapers and other necessities for the evacuated population. “In Drumheller it has just been wonderful,” said McNichol. Her idea more than took off, but continued to soar. Fowler, manager of First Student Canada for Strathmore, Drumheller, and Airdrie, said McNichol’s idea spread to the point there are now four busses from different communities all filled to capacity with supplies. “I put a random call out to drivers, and it has been so overwhelming,” she said. The word spread through word of mouth, Facebook and eventually Calgary media. “We had the Taber bus coming up to meet the Drumheller
Drumheller residents have come out in force to support the thousands who have been uprooted by the wildfires near Slave Lake. It appears there was a need for residents to find a way to help those affected, because in less than two days, they filled a school bus with needed supplies for the evacuees. On Thursday afternoon Drumheller resident Tracy McNichol got behind the wheel of her bus and was on her way to Athabasca. McNichol, who works for First Student Canada, knew the company was sending busses to the area to help with the evacuation. She thought, 'why send the busses empty?' She contacted her manager Sue Fowler Tuesday morning and the idea took off. “I called her yesterday, and said ‘Sue, I have a crazy idea, and I want to know what you think?’ And that’s how it all got started,”

Yemen adds the wind not only delayed spraying, but also could have exacerbated the problem by bringing more mosquitoes into the valley. “Part of the problem is the tourist mosquitoes, they blow in from unsprayed areas. They can travel five miles in a breeze at night,” said Yemen. “Those ones we have to keep dealing with, we can’t expand our spray area.” Now it is just a matter of allowing the existing mosquitoes to complete their lifecycle. After that, the valley may feel some relief. Until then, buzz… slap! Buzz…buzz… slap! Itch…itch, itch.

The cool, wet spring combined with windy conditions has slowed the Town of Drumheller mosquito program, but Mayor Terry Yemen says relief should be on the way. “We should notice some improvement in the next couple of weeks,” he said. Because of the wind, aerial spraying was delayed, however they have completed a full application of the area. The Town has also sprayed ditches, and has tested and treated standing water that has the larvae. Because of the wet spring, there is much more water in the area to test and treat. He explains that the Town of Drumheller’s program attacks the larvae before they become adult mosquitoes. They do not spray or fog for

Driver killed in head on collision on Highway 9

On Wednesday, May 18, at 4:50 p.m. the Hanna RCMP were dispatched to a serious two vehicle head on collision just west of Secondary Highway 855 on Highway 9. Hanna Fire and Emergency Services also attended the scene. As a result of the investigation, it is believed that a red Chevrolet Aveo, driven by a lone occupant, was traveling westbound when it collided head on with an eastbound fully loaded Super B that was hauling condensate. Both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch and the semi burst into flames. Both vehicles sustained ex-
tensive fire damage. The driver of the tractor trailer unit was able to escape from his vehicle prior to it bursting into flames. The driver of the Chevrolet Aveo was pronounced dead on scene. Highway 9 was shut down for approximately five hours while police investigated the collision. The collision is still under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time. The name of the deceased is not being released pending positive notification to the next of kin. photo submitted

The Solar Bee circulation equipment has been installed in the town’s four water reservoirs to curb the water discolouration Drumheller residents saw pouring from their taps last fall. The $232,628 price tag included installation and delivery of the solar powered devices, and was approved by council in January. “They’ll initiate some savings in power, chemical and hopefully down the road some time,” said Director of Infrastructure Allan Kendrick. It will reduce chemicals used to treat the water by treating it the natural way by keeping the water circulating. “We’re not necessarily quitting the chemical but we’re certainly reducing the dosage and time we’d have to use that chemical. From that standpoint we look at it in energy savings and a reduction in energy costs.” Potassium permanganate, citric acid and copper sulfate are the chemicals used to treat the water. The Solar Bees work by slowly circulating the water so temperatures remain somewhat constant and the water is not allowed to sit. One of the causes of the discolouration last year was from organic matter, such as bluegreen algae, dying and releasing manganese into the reservoir. The Solar Bee helps combat this by not allowing the algae to gain energy from the sun by sitting on top of the water in the day, and gaining nutrients from the bottom at night. “If you reduce the food for it, it helps reduce particular strains of algae. Once it dies off, it disperses the chemical that was in it. We’re

Manganese levels rise in hotter weather and had naturally dropped off as temperatures cooled into the fall of 2010. The colouration also wasn’t seen at the water treatment plant. Summer’s high temperatures and prolonged contact time with the chlorine caused the water to become darker as it travelled along water lines.

Due to windy conditions and high wildfire risks, fire bans are now in place across the province on all land in Alberta. The fire bans are effective immediately, and until further notice. The only exceptions are federal lands where there are no fire control agreements, such as some National Defence lands, First Nations reserves outside of forest protection areas, and urban municipalities: cities, towns, villages and summer villages. Urban municipalities are encouraged to consider fire bans in their jurisdictions. Currently in Drumheller, the risk has been assessed and there is no fire ban in place. The fire bans prohibit the use of all wood, briquette and propane/ natural gas fires, including those contained in designated fire facilities and portable fire pits. Gas and propane stoves, when approved for cooking, are allowed. People can be charged under the Forest and

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves
in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves
in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Whether it has been under a tarp, or babied in a heated garage, it’s time to reconnect the battery, spray off the dust, pump up the tires and boogie. A sure sign of spring in the valley is the annual Boogie in the Badlands Car Show and Shine May 28 at Drumheller Chrysler. The show is the first chance to bring out your pride and joy to let local gawkers see what’s under the hood. The show is open to all marquees, and all conditions. Sometimes the most interesting rides are works-in-progress or untouched originals. This is the 15th annual Show and Shine, sponsored by Drumheller Chrysler. It attracts a strong contingent of local whips as well as out of town rides. Northern Mopars Car Club often has a strong showing of its membership. There is no entry fee for spectators, however exhibitors are asked to make a $5 donation to support the work of the Drumheller and District Humane Society. Spectators are also encouraged to donate. The Humane Society was formed in 2008 and this year it became a charitable organization. It is a volunteer driven organization with a deep concern for animals at its heart. It operates its adoption centre on 3rd Street West and is open Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

When I go to the food court at the mall, this is the first dish I seek out. My favourite is a little different than this in that it doesn’t have any type of grains in it. It is mainly parsley and tomato and is found at a Lebanese stall. But most people tend to use more ingredients and it is more filling that way too. I had a guest who was gluten-free, so I used quinoa instead of the bulgur. It was very good.

Cook 1 cup bulgur as directed on package. (or quinoa, rice, or couscous)
Cool and mix with 1 diced, peeled cucumber 1 cup chopped parsley ½ cup chopped mint ½ cup chopped scallions ¼ cup olive oil 3 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. allspice ½ tsp. pepper Sprinkle with minced jalapeno and crumbled feta to make it even more delicious than it already is. Another provincial political party. Just what this province and its electorate needs. The Alberta Party is not new, but it is now electing an executive and all the rest. Are eight parties not enough? Conservative, Liberal, NDP, Wildrose Alliance, Social Credit Communist, Evergreen, and Separation Party. That’s right, there are eight registered political parties in Alberta. There are literally, parties left, right, center and everywhere in between. Adding a new one only serves to muddy the already cloudy waters. Take a look at what happened federally. Personally, I have no complaints with the result of the federal election, I am in fact, elated, but those on the left will argue the 70 per cent of eligible voters, (more accurately, 60 per cent of those who voted), voted for something other than a Conservative. To which I can only say. “So what?” If that 60 per cent had concentrated their vote to one party, there would be no Harper majority, but no, everyone wants their particular niche, and they must have a party to represent them. My point is, there are too many parties, therefore too much vote splitting. It is a wonder that any party can achieve a majority, that a conservative party ever wins a majority is pure happenstance, luck, an aberration. 60 per cent of the vote split among at least five other parties. You see how difficult it is to gain a majority. Let’s don’t let this happen in our province. Do your homework, read the policies, become familiar with them, then pick a party that is credible, and has at least half a chance of winning an election. Anything less than this is foolishness, and a waste.
The other morning, after breakfast, I went upstairs to brush my teeth. This is my routine, and there is nothing unusual about it, in fact I would not even be writing about it were it not for a certain lady who told me to write something about the guy who writes “Salsa”. Anyway, there is nothing out of the ordinary about me brushing my teeth after breakfast, however, this certain morning I experienced what I will call a “movie moment”. I refer to it as such because it reminded me of those times you see in the movies when someone might toss a valuable object to someone else. It goes through the air in slow motion, and the fellow who is supposed to catch it has to make a diving catch, and he utters, in slow motion, “Noooooo.” He of course makes the catch, cradling the object just centimeters before it hit the ground. Well... I opened the cabinet above the sink, grabbed the toothpaste, only to have it slip out of my hand onto the floor. No problem. I bent over, picked up the tube, and on my way back up, it somehow jumped out of my grasp. I watched in horror as it flew in a beautiful slow motion arc right toward my toilet. I yelled in slow motion. “Noooooo” and watched helplessly, waiting for the splash down. Instead, there was a muffled “thanks”, as the tube landed crosswise on the rim of the bowl. It was perfectly balanced, one half looking into the water, the other half overlooking the floor. What were the chances? I grabbed for it the way Indiana Jones might grab for a crystal skull or whatever. Sounds odd, but next time I brush my teeth, I’ll put the toilet lid down first.

It seems like yesterday that Rosebud Theatre produced The Kite, a humourous W.O. Mitchell play that left audiences literally crying with laughter. Rosebud patrons have very fond memories of Daddy Sherry’s performance as the oldest man in the world, and his colourful sense of humour. This summer (May 27-August 28), W.O. Mitchell’s rural humour is back with Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons - and who better to play Jake (the hired farm-hand), than the man who played Daddy Sherry, Nathan Schmidt. According to Schmidt, “The fun of playing characters like Daddy Sherry and Jake is that they are refreshingly honest, headstrong and lovable. I relish the opportunity to attack and speak impulsively rather than thinking before I act. It’s similar to the dynamics Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau have in Grumpy Old Men and The Odd Couple. Jake and Old Man Gatenby just say what
they think and fight for what they know to be true and delight audiences along the way. Add to that the fact that W.O. Mitchell is a magnificent Canadian author with tremendous skills in creating realistic stories and humour. In both The Kite and Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons, the punch lines are perfect and the humour lands every time. It is a treat to get to play these roles.” Schmidt hails from the small Alberta town of Vermillion, located east of Edmonton near the Saskatchewan border. Rosebud Theatre patrons will remember Schmidt in numerous other memorable roles including Schmendrick in Village of Idiots, The Fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof, Father Damien in Damien, Fagin in Oliver! and the gardener, Ben Weatherstaff, in Rosebud’s Christmas production of The Secret Garden. charge of the Acting Programme. The play shapes three of W.O. Mitchell’s Jake and the Kid stories (The Day Jake Made Her Rain, Cabin Fever and You Gotta Teeter) into a two-act play with tall-tale story lines, colourful vernacular dialogue and poetic descriptions of Canada’s prairies.
Combined, the show successfully brings to the stage the cantankerous hired hand Jake, the Kid, the Kid’s ma, Old Man Gatenby, a character that reappears in the stories as Jake’s neighbourly nemesis and a CBC radio reporter. Jake and the Kid: Prairie Sea-

The Alberta College of Art and Design offered Grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to showcase their work in the ACAD SHOW OFF. This year a DVSS Art 30 student submitted his art work in a juried exhibition and of the 400 students province wide, he was one of the 75 accepted. Joon Ahn had one of his pieces accepted and displayed at the exhibition in Calgary from April 30 to May 7. He had to submit three pieces of his work and the school picked one. At the art show there was a possibility of Joon winning a scholarship for his work. Although he did not win on Monday, May 16, Joon found out he was awarded a $7,000 scholarship for his portfolio. Joon comes from Seoul, Korea. He has been in Drumheller since 2008. Joon will be attending ACAD in September to continue his studies in art. Joon’s artistic ability is inspiring.
