“I love the hills, especially while on a quad.”

We have seen, heard and done lots in this job over the years and while not much surprises this writer anymore, we have also learned there is always something new that comes along that catches us off guard. Such was the case last Wednesday morning when we ran into a truck driver working for an out of town-based transport company. He delivers liquor to a store about the time this writer is delivering his newspapers to an adjacent business. Having seen him on numerous occasions, we exchange a "good morning", and each goes about his business. (Editor's Note - We wish to make it perfectly clear this company is NOT Hi-Way 9 Express who have a company uniform policy.) Last week, this gentleman was wearing a red T-shirt with the following on the front and the back (while this may not be exactly what it said, you get the idea): 5UCK M1.DICK The '5' starts out the first word and the '1' supposedly takes the place of a 'Y'. This gentleman obviously has a low opinion of himself, but has an equally low opinion of those forced to read it. It is an insult to the clients or customers of the company he works for, and has no humour attached to it. There is obviously some shock value there, and the wording could be a website, although we didn't examine the shirt close enough to make that conclusion. After discussing this with a number of people who were equally disgusted, we decided the best course of action was to write this piece. But think of it this way: If you were filling a prescription at the pharmacy, would you like your pharmacist to hand you your medicine wearing a shirt with that message? How about when buying a car? Would you sit across the desk negotiating a car purchase if the salesman had on a shirt bearing that message? Or how about your favourite food establishment? How long would you patronize a place that would allow staff to serve meals wearing a shirt like that? Some things are better left unsaid, but not this time. This offensive T-shirt and its owner need to know that not everyone finds any value in that display. If this printed word is so powerful, we hope it finds its way back to the owners of the company so they know how their company image is being tarnished. There are limits to what society will stand. magical touch to its performances. Ertman is confident that his cast of close to 40 actors and musicians is up to the task. Special to this performance is a rotating children’s choir of 22 talented young entertainers from Calgary and Southern Alberta. Ertman’s unique approach combined with Terry Gunvordahl’s spectacular Dickensian London inspired set is sure to captivate audiences. “I love this story of a boy who goes from the darkest underbelly of Victorian London to finding his true birthright. The songs are so wonderful - melodies that capture the spirit of the moment and linger with you long after. This musical is pure magic - a dose of goodness emerging from an unexpected place,” said Ertman. “The characters are very nicely drawn, and we have actors in principle roles who will give people the entertainment, pathos and heart that this story demands. Nathan Schmidt, who audiences know from his many character roles on stage in Rose-

Sykes. He’s a scary, tattooed underworld character that comes right out of the Godfather. The kids are great. Cassia Schramm, a young apprentice actor, plays Oliver, and she is so lovable and so full of spunk that you’ll want to take her home with you. The company is fantastic, and there is an energy radiating out from our rehearsal hall that is infectious!” Among Lionel Bart’s unforgettable songs that will fill Rosebud Theatre’s Opera House are Food Glorious Food, Where is Love?, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, As Long As He Needs Me and many more. Oliver! runs from May 28 to August 29, 2010 at the Rosebud Theatre Opera House. It includes evening shows Thursday through Saturday, and matinees Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, with Sunday matinees in July and August. Special Father’s Day matinee Sunday, June 20. Dancer takes in show 50 years after she takes stage Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Bev Larsen took in Carol Todor Dance School’s 26th annual show Olympics to Vaudeville on May 10. Bev preformed as a youngster at the Napier in the 1940’s, and is on the poster seen behind her now displayed at the Napier. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

This year’s year end dance revue by Carol Todor’s Dance School had a special guest, one that was tapping her toes on the stage of the Napier Theatre more than 50 years ago. This was the second year the dance school has collaborated with the Napier for its year-end recital. This year the theme of the shows on May 9 and 10 was all vaudevillian. While the art of vaudeville predates their special guest’s performances by a few years, to have someone that performed in community variety acts in the 1940s, made the show special. Beverly Larsen (nee Cowles) made her way from

Chilliwack B.C. to take in the show. Bev is the mother of Napier Theatre owner Jeff Larsen, and she grew up in Drumheller. She had a trip planned for a family birthday party in Calgary, but arrived about a week early to see the Napier Theatre alive once again with dancing. Of course, the theatre has changed. In 1951, the original building burned and the stage on which Bev performed is no longer there. While it was rebuilt as a theatre designed for motion pictures, the space still seems to have a live spirit. Bev tells inSide Drumheller she thoroughly enjoyed the show, and the glint in her eye hints it may have brought back a few memories. Many theatregoers have probably seen Bev’s picture on a poster from 1949 at the Napier. While still a preteen, she was part of some of the community variety shows of the time produced by Horace McHeffey. The show featured dancing, music and McHeffey’s famous ‘chalk talk’ where he would narrate a story and illustrate live as he spoke. The show also featured the traditional, if not politically correct, minstrel show. Bill Franklin would pound out a tune on the piano for all the

acts. Bev was born and raised in the valley. Her father was a carpenter who worked with Earl Parsons. He was also a musician, and played saxophone for a high school dance band along with Joe Yopek and Bob Llewellyn. Bev played piano. She got her start dancing under the direction of Kay Bigelow. As the mines closed in the 1940s and work dried up for her father, they moved to Calgary. The family came back every summer. “I was never sorry I grew up here,” she said emphatically. She enjoys visiting as the valley has always been home to her. Many of the landmarks remain, although many, including the Newcastle cottage schools and DHS where she attended, are no longer here. Neither is the Sylvia Theatre where she also performed. “I never thought my son would come back to Drumheller and run the theatre,” she chuckles. She is glad dancing is alive and well in the valley. Todor has now been operating her dance school for 26 years. “It is great she has continued teaching,” said Bev, adding it great for the little ones to be involved in dancing.

Name: Jennifer Newbrey Age: 35 Job: Fundraising Coordinator Employer: Town of Drumheller What do you like about your job? It is a great opportunity to meet a lot of people in Drumheller and the surrounding communities and to be involved in something to help the community. How long have you lived in Drumheller? 2.5 weeks If not all your life, where do you come from and what brought you to Drumheller? I grew up in a small suburb, South Milwaukee, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My husband (Mike) and I moved to Edmonton from Fargo, North Dakota back in August 2007. We moved to Alberta because Mike was offered a joint post-doctoral fellowship from the University of Alberta and the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Plus I had a great opportunity to conduct research on wetland birds and to teach several courses at the U of A. My husband was offered a full-time contract for two years with the Tyrrell, so we decided to move to Drumheller. It is great because now we can spend more time together. If there were one thing you could change about Drumheller, what would it be? The town of Drumheller really needs a modern facility for recreation, health, well-

Jennifer Newbrey ness, culture, and socialization. I am really excited about the Badlands Community Facility because it will provide new and enhanced opportunities for Drumheller residents, people in the surrounding communities, and tourists. Have you ever taken a life changing decision? Many. One was deciding to get my Ph.D. because so much of your life needs to be devoted to your career to be successful as an academic. However, I really enjoy teaching, so my teaching time is always time well spent. I also spend a significant portion of my time involved in research, and I am still actively involved in several projects here in Alberta. I am studying the effects of wetland restoration on the reproduction of wetlands birds and also the grebes that died during the Lake Wabamun oil spill back in 2005. What do you do in your spare time? I really enjoy bird watching, going for walks, hiking, travelling, reading novels, going to movies, and spending time with my husband. I also enjoy spending evenings and weekends working on my avian research. Your life’s best achievement? Obtaining my Ph.D. in zoology in August of 2007. What are your strengths? I am well organized, detail orientated, and a good writer. Any weaknesses? I cannot resist sweets (espe-

It appears that Europe has its own Quebec, by which I mean a state that requires large cash injections (tens of billions) to prop up its economy. Those injections coming of course from those Euro states that in this country would be regarded as “have” provinces. The “have” provinces or states are always looked upon to help out the “have nots”. In the European case, it is Greece that needs the bailout, and France and Germany will likely be the two nations asked to provide the most assistance. Neither one of them is really thrilled about the prospect, as they see it (Germany most strongly) as something of an ant/grasshopper situation. In Canada, with Quebec it’s more a case of basic blackmail. Turkey was once known as “The Sick Man of Europe”, but that was 200 years ago, and its empire (the Ottoman Empire) was collapsing around it. Today, Greece is the infirm one, as its economy collapsed. Greece, much like Quebec, has very generous social programs, a low 20% tax rate, and a retirement age of 58, with a government pension. And, as with most Western nations, it has allowed its birth rate to slip low enough that it can no longer replace itself. This is a combination that requires heavy spending and, over time, heavy borrowing. It works for a while, but sooner or later you get to a point where deficit financing builds up such a load of debt that you can never hope to repay. You no longer have the capacity to borrow; you are insolvent, bankrupt. It happened to Greece, and it can happen to any country (I believe Great Britain is out of money) or for that matter, any individual. Possibly the best example is the credit card that was supposed to be used only for necessities and emergencies. The convenience of buying now, paying later is very attractive, and very addictive. Soon you are buying things “on time” that you never would have considered if you had to pay cash at point of sale. Oh sure, you pay the card off every month, but then one day the credit card company calls and says you have been a good customer and they are raising your credit limit. Why not? What could happen? After that credit increase, you start using that card to purchase just about everything, until one day you use it to make a really big purchase. After all, you do have that higher limit, don’t you? When the monthly statement arrives at the end of the month, you find that with all your other bills, you don’t have cash enough to pay the full amount. You decide to pay the minimum due. You are hooked, and on your way to Greece. Easy, wasn’t it? It can happen, it does happen, any country is susceptible. Yes, even this one. The unfortunate part of an individual becoming overburdened by debt is that there is no “have” province to bail them out, or to supply more cash for more reckless spending. In this country, there is a euphemism for bailout - it’s equalization payment. This is basically a socialist scheme, where one province is robbed of its riches so that they may be redistributed among those provinces with fewer riches. It creates animosity and contempt. It also encourages profligacy. If Quebec were to leave Canada (oh, would that it were so) and continue with all the things that equalization allows it to fund, but without the billions in equalization payments, it would soon occupy the same sinking vessel as Greece. Vigilance people, vigilance. Over the last couple of weeks, Stephen Harper has been called a misogynist for cutting funding to some women’s programs, and a homophobe for refusing to fund events that celebrate the homosexual lifestyle. A homophobe and a misogynist, 20L what’s left?

ially anything with peanut butter and chocolate). chocolate) cially Three words that best describe you? Studious, adventurous, and caring. What makes you happy? I really enjoy working with wild birds, mucking around in wetlands in a pair of chest waders, collecting bird eggs for my research, photographing baby birds in my study nests. I also enjoy spending time with my husband and my pets (two budgies, a cockatiel, and a Russian hamster), and seeing rare wild birds that I haven’t seen often. If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? 1. To be able to spend more time with my family in the States, 2. to eliminate pollution and its negative effects on the environment, and 3. to have world peace. If you could have one super power what would it be? I have always thought it would be really fun to be able to fly. Although I am a bit nervous about heights, so I am not sure why! Words to live by? We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children (Native American proverb).

Food for

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist Summer weddings, showers and tea parties It’s that time of year for summer parties and fun foods. Sometimes they look too good to eat! Using the idea from the cake every little girl loves, I made this dip for a wedding shower and iced it with pink-tinted cream cheese. Using a 4 cup glass measuring cup, I lined saran wrap then packed the dip in. After refrigerating overnight, I turned the cup over and removed it. I took the legs off the doll before setting it into the top. Of course, you could use any type of bowl as well. Any firm dip would work. Using the block-style cream cheese, it firms up well when refrigerated. I used my usual spinach dip. This corned beef dip was a hit at a previous party and is a little different. Normally, I heat the spinach dip in a bread loaf at 325 for 2 hours, wrapped in foil. The corned beef one is served cold. Spinach Artichoke Dip 2 - 8oz. pkg. cream cheese 1 pkg. frozen spinach, thawed and drained well 1 c. grated cheddar cheese 1 c. grated Parmesan (or the Italian blend package) 2 tsp. dill 1 can artichoke hearts, chopped 1 c. mayonnaise ½ c. diced onion 1 clove garlic ½ c. cooked, crumbled bacon Mix all together.

Dilly Corned Beef Dip 1 - 12 oz. can corned beef 2 c. sour cream 2 c. mayonnaise 1/3 c. minced fresh parsley 2 T. finely chopped onion 2 T. fresh dill or 2 t. dried ½ t. seasoned salt Combine all ingredients except the beef. Pour over crumbled beef and toss. This would also be cute for a sweet sixteen party. Have a blessed day and remember to be a blessing... 20l

Royal Tyrrell Museum celebrates 25th anniversary Kyle Smylie The Weekender

The Royal Tyrrell Museum, quite possibly the valley’s crown jewel of attraction, is celebrating its 25th birthday this year and is celebrating with an exhibit and party as gargantuan as the museum’s contents. To kick off its anniversary season, a new exhibit, Alberta Unearthed: 25 stories of discovery, will showcase 25 of the museum’s most significant specimens and the intriguing stories behind them. May well being the centerpiece of the new exhibit, Black Beauty, one of the most complete tyrannosaurus rex fossils in the world, was found in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta by two children fishing. She is one of many examples of the interesting stories behind the chosen specimens on exhibit. Selecting 25 specimens from a collection of 130,000 fossils was a challenging task. “The specimens we chose tell the story of the Royal Tyrrell Museum while highlighting some of the most

significant discoveries in modern science,” said Andrew Neuman, the museum’s executive director. “The result is an incredible exhibit,

featuring everything from a stunning tyrannosaurus rex named ‘Black Beauty’ to an exquisite piece of amber, to a flying turtle from China.”

Alberta Unearthed will open to the public May 25, the anniversary celebrations will be held September 1719. The official Royal Tyrrell Museum birthday party will be held Saturday, September 25. “The Royal Tyrrell Museum has been making Albertans proud for 25 years,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit. Alberta Unearthed is about the people, places, and pieces of heart of Canada’s world renowned dinosaur museum. Amazing stories, extraordinary illustrations and photographs, and spectacular specimens come together in this tribute to a quarter century of scientific success. The Tyrrell has come far from when it first layed down its mandate to share Alberta’s rich fossil history. New initiatives set out by the museum include the ambitious distance learning program now being offered. Students can now have the expertise of a world-renowned Tyrrell palaeontologist broadcast into their classroom via the internet, with interactive and intimate instruction being sent as far as New Zealand.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Walls come tumbling down Demolition work has commenced on the former Home Hardware building across from the post office in downtown Drumheller on Wednesday, May 19. Efforts ramped up to deter May long weekend rowdiness Campers urged to be aware of fire risks Nearly 280 enforcement officials will be patrolling Alberta’s highways, parks and public lands to encourage order, safety and stewardship during the May long weekend. In the past, the weekend has resulted in environmental damage, public safety issues, and conflicts between land users. At the core of these issues are a higher volume of users, poor user ethics and fragile environmental conditions due to spring thaw and frequent precipitation. “Enforcement efforts will be stepped up during the Victoria Day long weekend. Abuse of our public lands will not be tolerated,” said Ted Morton, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development. “We will have more officers on the ground this year to ensure visitors have a safe weekend and that those who vandalize our natural resources are charged.” The Alberta government is taking a variety of steps to reduce the environmental and social impacts associated with the Victoria Day weekend. On May 7, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development; Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation; Alberta Transportation; Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security; and the RCMP signed an agreement to create an interagency task force to better coordinate efforts to deal with recreation education and enforcement. An informal partnership has been in place for more than ten years in the southern Rockies and Clearwater areas. Under this new agreement it is now expanding to other parts of the province, including the Grande Prairie and the Foothills areas. This May long

weekend, about 280 enforcement officials will be: • Checking off-highway vehicles to ensure they are legal and safe to be used on our public lands; • conducting checkstops;

• conducting education and compliance patrols; and • managing public safety concerns. Albertans are also advised to check fire bans before they head out for the weekend. The

wildfire hazard is currently high in many areas of the province due to dry and windy conditions. Recreationists are urged to use caution when lighting campfires and to never leave

fires unattended. People who start an open fire outside of a designated area may face a $575 ticket. For information on fire bans, visit www. albertafirebans.ca or call 1-866-FYI-FIRE.
