The Badlands Community Facility received a boost on Wednesday morning as the Pylypiw and Lubinski, and Western Chev family made a $100,000 donation to the Badlands Community Facility. Western Chev has been a pillar in the community for many years with Hellar Pylypiw at the helm for almost 40 years, retiring earlier this year. Giving back to the community has been a priority for many years, both for his family and the company. “This community has been good to us,” Pylypiw told inSide Drumheller. “We always want to give back; from the high schools to baseball or hockey to 4H.” With the donation, the gallery area in the BCF will now be named to reflect this donation. He said his family enjoys art. His family also utilizes the facility on a regular basis and feels it is an asset to the community. “We come here just about daily and it is tremendously good for us,” said Pylypiw.

Longboarders causing traffic concerns Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Local police are asking longboarders to use more care and attention when travelling through the town. RCMP Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins explains that at a recent meeting, concerns were expressed about the manner in which several youth are operating their longboards through Drumheller’s streets.

He said the concerns expressed were on the unsafe manner in which the longboards were being operated - it was felt to be dangerous. He said it was felt that it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. The operators were weaving all over the road, cutting across or through traffic, or obstructing traffic. Hopkins said many of the longboard riders were

distracted, observed to be speaking or texting on their cell phones while operating their board. “I have researched this and, except for some fines such as stunting or obstructing traffic there is little that can be done save the implementing of a Town bylaw,” said Hopkins. RCMP ask that anyone having an issue with a longboard rider to please obtain as much information as possible, includ-

ing the longboarder’s identity, and report it to the local RCMP detachment, to determine what can be done. The Staff Sergeant notes not all riders are operating in a dangerous manner, so each incident must be investigated on its own merit. A longboard is typically longer than a regular skateboard, and is used more for transportation than performing tricks.

Town entrance beautification started Town crews and contractors continue work on the south entrance to Town Thursday morning, May 22 along Highway 9 in front of Extra Foods. The Town plans continued work on beautifying and improving the entrances to Drumheller and making them virtually maintenance free.

PLEASE LICENSE YOUR PETS! Bylaw members continue to find animals that are not licenced and pose difficulty in finding the owners. When this happens and there is no licence tag, tattoo or microchip on the animal, bylaw members do not know who may be responsible for the animal and cannot return the animal home. Please buy a licence tag for your dog or cat, get it tattooed or have a microchip implanted by a veterinarian. There is a much better chance of returning an animal to its home if there is a way to identify it. If you wish further information please contact Greg Peters at 403 823 1363.

Council Notes From the Regular Meeting of Drumheller Town Council Tuesday, May 20, 2014 • Rescheduled from Victoria Day, May 19 After the in-camera session at the May 5 regular meeting of Town Council, Council moved to revert to the regular Council Meeting, and approved a three per cent cost of living increase to Chief Administrative Officer Ray Romanetz, retroactive to January 1, 2014. •••••• Deputy Mayor Tara McMillan called Council to order, with a big thank you to the Town's Public Works Department for their Spring Clean Up efforts. •••••• Brad Wiebe of Palliser Regional Municipal Planning spoke at the Public Hearing of Bylaw 05.14, to amend the Land Use Bylaw 10.08, which is to provide modifications and additions to the land use regulations within the Town of Drumheller. The first reading of the bylaw was April 22, 2014 and the matter was advertised. Amendments include regulation of cell towers using best practices and common approaches, mainly to keep the towers out of residential areas, further clarification on specific land uses - including sea cans, and rezoning land near the Passion Play site. There was no one from the public present to speak at the hearing and no council questions, so the public hearing closed, and Council moved forward later with the final readings and approval of the bylaw. The CAO clarified the zoning change for the land near the Passion Play site is following through on previous Council commitments from about seven years ago. The rezoning reflects more appropriately the land use of parking and temporary fencing. •••••• Council held a Public Hearing for Bylaw 6.14 to close an undeveloped portion of Riverside Avenue in the

Newcastle area, and to sell or hold the land. This matter came about from a specific request of D.A.R.T.S. for future development. The information was circulated to affected homeowners per municipal regulations. Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk requested clarification of the land location, and Coucillor Zariski's question of which area D.A.R.T.S. wanted to buy was answered as the adjacent lot. There was no public to speak at the hearing, and the public hearing was closed. As the land closure involves a road, the request is sent to Alberta Transportation for approval. Costs for the land transfer become the responsibility of each property owner. •••••• Council approved Marigold Library System per capita levy of $5.71 for 2015, and $5.83 for 2016. Councillor Zariski asked if the Library Board felt the increase was logical and reasonable. Councillor Kolafa, a member of the Library Board, said the Board felt it was fair. Councillor Garbutt said the Town could only provide the excellent service to the public it does because of membership in Marigold, and stated he had no objections to the increase as it is inflationary. •••••• Council awarded the contract for the Town's 2014 Street Improvement Progam to Brooks Asphalt & Aggregate Ltd. for the amount of $2,407,995. The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

WHEN YOU HAVE TO GO! Visitors... if you need a washroom, please use ours!

We’ve profiled Gunnar Mortensen and his 1950 Nimbus before, but never with his riding partner who spends most days parked at The Brick in downtown Drumheller. Gunnar has had the bike since 2001

when he imported the 750cc four cylinder. We won’t go as far as saying we have two dinosaurs cruising the valley with side cars, but we can say both make up a rich part of the valley’s local colour.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 You come on too strong sometimes, Leo. Those who know you best can handle this approach, but you can scare off potential new friends if you do not ease up. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Be patient and do not demand too much of yourself during the next few days, Virgo. You need to keep your workload light; otherwise, you may get easily overwhelmed. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a time to discover the value of others, Libra. A willingness to try new things and delegate some responsibilities will free up your calendar. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Certain personalities don’t always click, Scorpio. Don’t feel the need to overcompensate for a strained relationship. Spend more time with those with whom you connect. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Flexible thinking is key, Sagittarius, especially as you face a few new challenges this week. There are some opportunities to reconnect with family later in the week. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 A rush of activity fills your calendar and keeps your phone ringing off the hook, Capricorn. Your challenge will be separating the pressing events from others. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, paperwork has built up and requires more time than you had originally planned. There is no way to avoid this task, but a helper can make it move more quickly. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Moderation is your mantra for the week, Pisces. Do not let the pendulum swing too far in either direction.

Dale Goulder, left, and Pat Doyle were two of the almost 90 particpants in this year’s Walk A Mile In Her Shoes fundraiser for the Big Country Anti Violence Association. The funds raised go into a number of areas for the association, including support programs and Angel’s Corner, which is being developed on the south side of the Gordon Taylor Bridge, to acknowledge and support victims of violence.

“The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog” by Dr. Bruce Perry

Age: Younger than Scottish peat. Occupation: Substitute teacher at St. Anthony’s School. How long have you been doing that? One year, but I taught my first year of teaching in Whitecourt, Alberta, then retired from full-time teaching after thirty years in Hanna. What’s your favourite thing about teaching? My students. I’ve been very lucky over the years. I like going to class. Where were you born? Glasgow, Scotland. The family came to Canada when I was 12. What was that like? We took the wrong flight from Montreal, and landed in Edmonton instead of Calgary. Calgary Mayor Don Mackay was in town with Stampeders football, and offered us the flight to Calgary with the team. What do you miss about

Scotland? The small pub lunches. What do you like best about Drumheller? The paved back roads - I have a motorcycle. And the path by the river. Anything you’d like to see here? More variety of stores. I tend to stick mainly around here for shopping. Do you use social media? My computer crashed a year ago, so, no. My sons bugged me to get a smartphone a couple of months ago. Favourite hockey teams? The Calgary Flames, and I’m rooting for the Montreal Canadians during the play-offs. Favourite Scottish musicians? The Proclaimers. What superpower would you want? Mind reading. A lady friend told me sometimes I don’t connect the dots. A final thought? Always laugh.

My book club’s choice for the month of May was “The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: and other stories from a Child Psychiatrist’s Notebook--What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love, and Healing.” One member of our group recommended the book because she had been to an event with the author speaking. Dr. Bruce Perry, child psychiatrist, has treated children who survived horrific circumstances. Some of the cases in the book include children raised in cages or closets, witnesses to parent’s death, abuse, violence and other forms of trauma. He also worked with the children who escaped the Waco disaster. Dr. Perry shows how the developing brain works and how situations alter proper brain development. Human love is his most powerful therapy. His case studies illustrate the importance of a caring, loving, safe environment needed to nurture a child in order to grow up without neurological consequences resulting from the effects of trauma. These children have to learn to love and be loved. Often, children are misdiagnosed. The reasons for their behaviors actually stem back to trauma in the early years. This doctor uses various methods involving all senses, depending on the original circumstances. He can spend hours before getting the slightest response. Besides the client, the parents and peers might also be involved in the therapy. Most of these stories are heart-breaking, but in the end, many of the results are very up-lifting. The power of love and healthy relationships is very evident and gives us faith in seemingly hopeless situations. Reading this book also shows us how to react towards children who are acting out. The more patience and sensitivity we display, the more positive the child’s response is likely to be. This is a very worthwhile book to read.

backers on the field. He has two solos, an assist, a sack for a loss and a fumble recovery.” All of this came in a single half of play for Lister. He was the first Drumheller Titan to play in a Senior Bowl. “For the last three years Alan has been my number one guy. He has been the leader on the defense since he entered that locker room three years ago, so to have this experience with him was special,” said Fournier. The Senior Bowl turned 25 years old, and it is a chance for the top players in the province to showcase their skills. They took to the field on Monday, May 19. This year the North beat the South in a close 14-10 finish. Fournier said his team came out firing hard and scored right away in the defensive battle. Penalties away from the ball however were costly for the team. “We capitalized on their mistakes early and they capitalized on our mistakes later on,” said Fournier. The South was able to score with less than three minutes left in the game, but it was called back. “That’s how close it was,” said Fournier. Just to coach was a thrill for Fournier, but it was business. “The game was played in Commonwealth Stadium, and that is a rare opportunity,” said Fournier. “We ran a pretty structured weekend, it wasn’t a four day vacation, it was time to go to work.”
