Principal requests North Dinosaur Trail school zone Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The principal of St. Anthony’s School is hoping to get motorists to slow down when driving by the school. Discussion is resuming over whether or not to make a section of North Dinosaur Trail a school zone, reducing the speed of vehicles to 30 kilometres per hour during school hours. “I am very concerned about the safety of our students when crossing the highway in front of our school. We have had several near misses to date. I have approached the Mayor’s office, our MLA’s office and the RCMP to see if there are other solutions that could work,” said JoAnne Akerboom, principal of St. Anthony’s School. “Everyone I have approached in the community is very supportive and are working with us to explore alter-

nate solutions.” Prior to the school opening in February last year, the RCMP asked residents to be vigilant when driving by the school. Students crossing North Dinosaur Trail must use the crosswalk in an area designated 70 kilometres per hour. Because North Dinosaur Trail is a highway, it is administered by Alberta Transportation. Initially RCMP and the Town of Drumheller asked Alberta Transportation to install a system of early warning lights which would flash if students were crossing. The RCMP also had a greater presence in the area after the school opened. For its part, the school placed a greater emphasis on educating its students about traffic safety. Now, those measures may not be enough. Akerboom sent a letter to

the Drumheller Town Council on Tuesday asking for their support in lobbying Alberta Transportation. At the meeting, Council agreed to support the school’s initiative, but felt a complete review of all the traffic issues surround St. Anthony’s School was necessary.

They were willing and able, but conditions were favourable and members of the Drumheller Fire Department ready to battle wildfires were stood down. inSide Drumheller reported in its May 17 edition that three fire firefighters Mike Devaleriola, Ryan Young and Steve Hatt were ready to roll and provide their services to the residents of Nordegg who were threatened by wildfires. inSide Drumheller also learned that Cody Blasken made himself available to help. They were to re-

port on Saturday morning, however at the last minute, they were asked to stand down. “We received a phone call at 4:30 on Friday afternoon and they said they had it under control and were letting people back in (to Nordegg), so Drumheller didn’t get to participate,” said Drumheller Fire Chief Bill Bachynski. He goes on to say the community was appreciative of their commitment. “They thanked us very much, and I told them if there was ever another time, by all means call us, we should be able to

help,” said Bachynski. Recent cooler temperatures and moisture have helped to drop the risk of wildfires, although there is still fire bans in much of south central Alberta. “We go through this every spring. It depends a lot on humidity conditions, how cold it gets at night and if there is dew forming. There are many factors that play in to it,” said Bachynski. Currently there is no fire ban in place for Drumheller. There are still bans in the County of Stettler, and Special Areas 2 and 3, and a fire prevention notice in Kneehill County.

Town targets mosquitoes Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Public Works staff have been targeting one of summer’s most annoying pests. Staff have been hard at work nipping mosquitoes in the bud. Over the past three weeks, standing water in the area has been monitored and sprayed to help keep outdoors tolerable. “We finished the first application on the ground and in the air,” said Daryl McConkey, a licensed applicator with the Town. To control the mosquito population McConkey monitors any standing water for mosquito larva and, if found, sprays a product that targets the larval stage. “You go out and check some water, for example, a roadside ditch, and if there is larva, you spray it with a backpack sprayer. It’s a granular product that eliminates larva,” said McConkey. “We use Alpine Helicopters and go out and cover farmers’ fields and several

Council Notes From the regular meeting of Town Council

May 21, 2013 • • • • • • Mayor Terr y Yemen opened the meeting by introducing the Town of Drumheller's new Director of Corporate Service, Byron Nagazena. The week of June 3 to 9 was declared Seniors' Week in honour of the past, present, and future contribution of seniors in the community. Mayor Yemen congratulated the Drumheller Centennial Committee for the centennial celebration on May 15, and thanked the volunteers and sponsors who helped make it happen. • • • • • • Mayor Yemen presented a letter from St. Anthony's School Principal JoAnne Akerboom requesting the Town's support in making a school zone on North Dinosaur Trail. Town pledged their support, but felt it was necessary to do a complete review of all traffic issues near St. Anthony's School. • • • • • • Council held a public hearing for Bylaw 09.13, which would close portions of unused and undeveloped road allowances on 16 and 17 streets SW for retention or sale. AltaGas and ATCO, who have utilities under the roads, stated they had no objections. • • • • • • Council was presented with five appointments to the Badlands Community Facility Fundraising Cabinet. Kimberly Suntjens, John Shoff, Linda Lacher, Heather Colberg, and Koren McDougald were appointed to the cabinet for an unspecified term. Council discussed the term each should be appointed for. Councillor Andrew Berdahl felt it would be necessary to give terms to help set a timeline for when fundraising should be complete. Mayor Yemen stated he would address the matter with fundraising chair Hansine Kostelecky at their next meeting. • • • • • • Allan Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services, presented a request for decision regarding the upcoming street improvement contract. Mr. Kendrick recommended the contract be awarded to Brooks Asphalt & Aggregate Ltd. for $1,082,720. Councillor Tom Zariski asked when the work would begin. Mr. Kendrick replied the original estimate was June 30, but the Town is pushing for June 3. The motion to award the contract was carried. • • • • • • Mr. Kendrick presented a request for decision regarding the 2013 cast iron water line replacement project. It was recommended that Knibb Developments Ltd. be awarded the contract for $353,493 and the remainder of the Town's $620,000 budget be included if there is opportunity to do more lines than previously planned. The goal would be to efficiently use available grants and get the project back on track. Councillor Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk asked if Knibb Developments Ltd. was the contractor who took longer than expected two years ago. Mr. Kendrick felt the previous delay was an isolated incident and explained Knibb Developments Ltd. had other projects at the same time and, in the past, have done excellent work for the Town. A motion to award the contract was carried. • • • • • •

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

If you would like to offer this service to our visitors, call 403-823-2580

There aren’t too many Mopars out there that have more power than Bill and Barb Lewis’ 1970 GTX. The Rosedale couple has had the Plymouth for 20 years and unlike many collectors, they make sure it gets driven. And what fun to d5rive! It’s powered by a 440 c.i. V8 with a six barrel,

more than enough to get moving. The car was originally purchased in Star Alberta. While it has been repainted, it maintains the original Limelight Green. They also have the numbers- matching engine in his garage. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

If anything the centennial car show proved that Drumheller gear heads have some hidden treasures, and next weekend they have another chance to let them out. Organizers of DinoFest are making the event bigger and better, and have landed a giant in the music industry for over two decades. Sit Down, Servant will have primetime billing on the DinoFest Canalta Stage on Saturday June 8 right after the Fire Coulee Bandits. While the name might not be familiar, the voice and the guitar will be. Being a fan of Gordie Johnson has always been downright fun as he has always forged his own direction. As front man of Big Sugar, the band created its own brand of bluesrock, adding a bit of a reggae vibe. He went on to become ”Grady Johnson” fronting county infused blue-rock act, releasing four albums. Along the way, he has produced albums for artists from Taj Mahal to Joel Plasket. “It’s super exciting,” said Mike Dooley of the Drumheller Festival Committee, who are staging DinoFest. He explains it was as simple as looking for who was available at the time and who showed interest. Sit Down, Servant fit the bill.

This year, they are getting behind the Alberta Wish Ride, supporting the Children’ Wish Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to granting wishes for children who have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. “It may not be right in the valley, but it is about being a good neighbour,” said Telford. He has been busy promoting the event hoping the early spring show will catch on even more outside of the valley. For more information, contact Telford at 403321-0091.

coming to Drumheller to play on our golf course, which brings more people here.â€? The Dinosaur Trail course is one of the most unique in Alberta. To ease new golfers into the badlands, the order of the holes has been changed. Golfers will do ďŹ ve holes on the riverside front nine, then head to the back nine in the badlands, then ďŹ nish o with four holes on the front nine. “Our back nine is quite unique with the badlands. It’s kind of a Jekyll and Hyde, course. The front nine is nice park setting and then you get up to the back nine and there are no trees and dierent terrain. It really creates a challenge for golfers,â€? said Scott Westman, general manager

“Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club has been chosen by the Alberta Golf Association to host one of its provincial championships,â€? said Tom Zariski. “We’ve secured the championship here to see how things go.â€? The tournament is one of 14 held by the AGA. This will be the ďŹ rst time Drumheller had been chosen as host. Nearly 100 golfers are expected to participate. It is hoped the tournament will produce a considerable economic spino for the Valley. “It obviously helps the economics of Drumheller. It’s interesting to note that golf tourists spend more per capita than most other tourists,â€? said Zariski. “We will have people, between now and the tournament,

I’m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks I’ll write about my training and what I’ve learned. What to wear, what to wear. I’ve learned over the past few weeks just how important the right pair of shoes can be. I’ve used the same pair of tattered running shoes for awhile and, considering their ragged state, decided it was time for a new pair. Gavin Makse, athletic director at St. Anthony’s School and marathon runner, had some advice. “When you’re buying shoes, have a few dierent pairs in mind to try. Make sure they’re comfortable and run around the store to see how they feel,â€? said Makse. “Shoes are marketed to look cool, but you have to think about if they’ll work for your feet.â€? One thing I wanted to

try was thin-soled shoes. I found a pair I liked and jogged around the store, to the bewilderment of other customers. It felt dierent, but I knew getting my feet used to them was part of the process. “If you go with running shoes that are more a barefoot feel, you almost have to train just to wear them,â€? said Makse. After getting them home, the next thing I had to think about was how to run. Running the wrong way can lead to soreness and even injury. Initially, I would say I was a heel-striker, someone who, when running, lands on their heel and kicks o with their toes. The vast majority of people land on their heels. “Most people tend to land on their heels. It’s supposed to be less than an ideal way to land, but if you’re not having any injuries, you might not have to change. If you do change,

go for a toe strike,â€? said Makse. To change my style to a toe-strike, it took a couple running sessions concentrating on my form. The change has improved my runs, I feel like I run longer and with less muscle soreness than heel-striking. My ďŹ rst run with thinsoled shoes was a dierent experience. I could feel a lot more under my feet and each step felt like more of an impact, but, by the end, my feet were killing me. I kept at if for subsequent runs and tried to train my feet, but it didn’t seem like they were getting any better. After a few runs, I gave up and switched back to my old, ratty shoes. “There has been some research saying it’s supposed to have less risk of injury, but you have to think about what terrain you’re running on. Your feet ex, blend, and react dierently. Trying it on grass may help improve your ankle and calf strength,â€? said Makse. I’ll give thin-soled runners another shot, but my shoe experiment is looking like a case of “if it isn’t broken, don’t ďŹ x it.â€?

of the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club. “Most people, even if their skill level isn’t the greatest, enjoy the challenge of the back nine, and the beauty and uniqueness of it. If all goes well, more tournaments may choose Drumheller in the future. “It’s kind of a foot in the door. There are people from Alberta Golf who say ‘we will never have a tournament in Drumheller, that course is just too weird’. I’m trying to prove them wrong, said Zariski. “We could conceivably get on the rotation for Alberta Golf, maybe even all of Canada, and have bigger, better, more important, and more attended tournaments in the future.
