Couple featured in STARS commercial leading up to 24-Hour Jam Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A local couple who has shown dedication to STARS by raising thousands of dollars each year are now part of STARS’s latest advertising campaign. Fran Nargang, owner of the Old Grouch's Restaurant, and her husband Garry have become famous for hosting the 24-Hour Jam at the restaurant. A few years ago, they began to dedicate the funds raised at the event to STARS Air Ambulance when their grandson was injured after being hit by a car. The couple credit STARS’s quick response for him today living a normal life. This year STARS kicked o its new Red Ring For Life campaign. This is a program where supporters can, for $60, receive a red stainless steel ring. According to www.stars.ca, “the ring is a symbol of survival, and worn by former patients, members of the chain of survival and supporters. It represents the many hands involved in a life-saving mission.â€? Beginning in June, a television spot will feature people who have been touched by the work of STARS. This includes patients, family, and friends of patients; all wearing the Red Ring. It starts by stating that one out of 10 Albertans either knows a STARS patient, or has been a STARS patient. Fran and Garry are featured in the 30-second spot. Fran tells inSide Drumheller the commercial was shot a few weeks ago, and commercial will be in rotation starting June 1. They went into Calgary, and Shaw Cable shot the commercial. “I thought it was good,â€? said Fran. The spot comes out just in time for this year’s 24Hour Jam. Last year the event broke its $6,000 goal by raising about $6,500, and this year they are hoping

to raise $10,000. Fran says they are on track to have a successful event with many items donated to the silent auction that runs during the event. Sta at the Old Grouch's also donate their wages and tips to the cause each year. They are also lining up some great entertainment. Fran says this year representatives from STARS will be at the event with information and merchandise. The 24-Hour Jam starts on Friday, June 4 at 6 p.m. and ends on June 5 at 6 p.m. Another addition to the event is the possibility of seeing Garry in a skort. Pledge sheets are available

Tom Savage Trio to get heels stomping at Last Chance Saloon Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Speaking on the road from Brandon, Manitoba, alt-country rocker Tom Savage is en route to the Last Chance Saloon in Wayne to play what will be his fourth show in just over two years in the badlands. In support of his new album, Live at the Acoustic Grill, Savage and his three piece band will be playing at the Last Chance on Sunday, June 6, one of his favourite spots on his Canadian wide tour spanning from Banff to Picton, Ontario. “(Drumheller) is like entering another planet… it feels like a day off when we play at the saloon,” said Tom Savage on Tuesday, making his way to a show in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Newly installed murals reflect Drumheller’s history Patrick Kolafa Weekender

QUOTE

After months of planning and hard work, residents and visitors will have a new view of the park at the corner of South Dinosaur Trail and 2nd Street West. For the last year, there has been considerable work done on the plot of land across from Mac’s Convenience Store. An agreement was reached with the land owner to beautify the lot, which has stood vacant for a number of years. On Tuesday morning, May 25, crews were out installing a mural along the fence on the north side of the park. This six-panel work, on four foot by eight foot canvases, reflects the historic roots Drumheller has in the coal industry. “I like doing the teaching because many people don’t feel they have the right to be an artist, because the artist is some sort of ‘special being.’ Everybody can be creative, it should be part of your daily thinking life.” Vicki Meyers

Vicki Myers guided two inmates from the Drumheller Institution in creating the installation. She says the project has been over a year in the works, and since February they have toiled away painting the mural at the Stampede Barn. She said it was an exciting process. The inmates built the murals from the canvas up, and she facilitated the work. She did a couple impromptu basic art lessons and was there to help guide the project along. By the end, the artists were playing solo. “The guys were great… they got right into it,” said Myers. “They were doing it on their own, they weren’t relying on me, they just kind of got in there and got at it. By the end of it, the last one that one inmate did, he did completely by himself.” Myers is an accomplished artist and for a time ran her own gallery in Drumheller. She is also experienced at teaching. She finds both creating and mentorship satisfying. “It is more about the process, that’s what it is all about for me… In the process of doing art, there are much more interesting things going on than what you come out with in the end,” said Myers. “I like doing the teaching because many people don’t feel they have the right to be an artist, because the artist is some sort of ‘special being.’ Everybody can be creative, it should be part of your daily thinking life.” “You can’t go wrong, and if you do go wrong, you learn from it.” The beautifying of the park is a collaboration amongst a number of community organizations including Communities in Bloom, the Drumheller Institution, The Town of Drumheller and many businesses that have donated to the project.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

tacting the ball… Followed by an unutterable string of curse words and excuses. Yep, it's golf season again. Duffers are in luck as Drumheller and area have two great courses within easy driving distance. Akokiniskway in the heart of Rosebud, and of course, Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club. Manager of Dinosaur Trail Scott Westman said the course is in pristine condition for the upcoming season. With a soft opening on Easter weekend, the course is now in full swing and many are taking advantage of the spring weather. One of the biggest changes to the course golfers will see this year is the completed new 14th hole. Westman said they undertook the project to improve visibility, especially of

other golfers on the course, making it safer. They have opened up the landing on the fairway. Westman said the change will also speed up the pace of play, and adds the hole still poses a healthy challenge to golfers. He said the course also undertook improvements to all of the fairways. “Last season we aerated the whole course. It doesn’t sound like much but it will make a difference, especially in the back nine which have a thinner base of soil,” said Westman. He says aerating will strengthen the roots of grass, allow the base to retain moisture and nutrients, and make it more durable. They have begun a program to annually apply more earth to the fairways to continually improve them.

Later golfers have another reason to hit the links, as the course is offering twilight specials after 3 p.m. Early golfers also have an advantage as the course has worked to improve its breakfast and even offer an earlier bird special. The improved breakfast menu includes “grab and go” selections including an English muffin breakfast sandwich. This year the course is introducing its “Nine and Dine” program on Friday and Saturday nights. This includes nine holes, a cart and dinner for one low price. “We have a great kitchen and want to let everyone, not just members, know we are open,” said Westman. The pro shop is set for another busy season. Westman says there is a full line of the top names in golf equipment, and they are planning a demo day on Thursday, June 10. Akokiniskway is just 30 minutes from Drumheller nestled in the Hamlet of Rosebud along the Rosebud River. It is a nine-hole Par 30 course with grass greens. It has a full

menu in the clubhouse and offers a pro shop with pull carts, power carts and club rentals. They have completed extensive renovations to the clubhouse and pro shop. Laurie Slezak at the pro shop said the restaurant is under new management. “We are going to do breakfast buffets every weekend and are open everyday from lunch to supper,” said Slezak. “The public is encouraged to come for a meal.” Back this season is the Sunday evening Turf and Turf special. This includes two rounds of golf, a power cart and two steak dinners. Last season they sold out almost every weekend. They are also adding daily specials in the restaurant. Little Country Blessings, the convenience store in Rosebud, has moved onto the golf course. The course has done extensive work on its campgrounds, which feature treed sites and power hook-ups at each site. All the sites are numbered, which allows the course to take reservations.
