The investigation into the suspicious death of a man in Newcastle is continuing. Drumheller RCMP have released the identity of the male discovered deceased at a Newcastle home Monday morning. Hopkins said the RCMP Major Crimes Unit has completed a thorough investigation. An autopsy was expected to be performed on Wednesday, April 29, and he said extensive forensic examinations are ongoing and will take an extended period of time to complete. The death remains suspicious. “Foul play has not been completely ruled out, however, I can assure the residents of Drumheller that this is a very isolated incident and that they are not at any risk,” said Hopkins.
Mayor Terry Yemen is taking his concerns about what appears to be lack of action to deal with the flood mitigation in Drumheller to the interim premier. This follows him attending The Flood and Drought Symposium in Calgary on Tuesday with CAO Ray Romanetz. The meeting provided few answers to issues facing Drumheller following the flood. “The big thing I took away from it is there is support for flood mitigation in Alberta and it is happening in Calgary, High River and Medicine Hat,” said Yemen, adding that Drumheller was only mentioned once throughout the whole meeting. “Am I disappointed? Yes. I realize that it is
an incredibly big thing they are doing here, they are going back as far as record go, looking for ebbs and flows, but as far as any new news for Drumheller, we came out with nothing whatsoever.” “When we asked, they said it was all part of the process. We were going to meet on May 1 for specific questions on Drumheller, and in Drumheller, but they have cancelled that until sometime later in May.” He asserts that residents dealing with the aftermath of the flooding deserve answers. “There are rumors going around and some of the things they even suggested about relocating people, residents want to know. “Should I side my house? Should paint my house?” and they don’t have the an-
swers for residents.” He said the Red Deer River Basin was hardly mentioned at the meeting. “I know we are not in the same situation as Calgary or High River, I would never suggest that… Why don’t they take us off the table and then go on and do the other stuff that is going to take a lot more time and money?” “We are going to amp up our lobbying efforts, we are going to push them even harder for answers.” One major concern stems from correspondence from then Minister of Municipal Affairs Doug Griffiths, dating back to last August relating to Approved Development Zones within the Town of Drumheller, recognizing the mitigation and
bylaws that Drumheller has in place for developing in area that on maps appear as floodways. The letter from Griffith concluded by saying the staff from Alberta Environment and Municipal Affairs (AESRD) “will work with your municipal administration to confirm our understanding of the details of your mitigation measures and bylaws.” This week Mayor Yemen sent a message to Premier Dave Hancock, asking when this is going to happen. “…when will staff from AESRD and Municipal Affairs work with our municipal administration to confirm our understanding of the details of our mitigation measures and bylaws?” he asks in the letter.
“We need help here, these conversations have not happened and we have no idea what to tell the people of Drumheller as far as flood mitigation,” said Yemen. There was one positive from the meeting for Yemen. He said when the programs begin, the funding is expected to flow through the existing grant process, allowing the municipalities to take control of the projects. “We’ll be able to get the tenders and push the process through, that will speed the process up and not deal with an additional level of bureaucracy,” said Yemen. “We are knocking on the door and asking the questions but ultimately the Government of Alberta is writing the cheque.” w52eowa

MS Walk set to go Sunday For a decade and half the MS Walk and Run in Drumheller has been a stalwart event to raise funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis, and there is no signs of slowing down. The annual event goes this Sunday morning, May 4 at the Badlands Community Facility. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the walk goes at 10 a.m. Organizer Shauna Brown is excited by how this year’s event is shaping up. “Our participants are up, our volunteers are up, we just need the sun to stay up� said Brown. “It is really inspiring this year to see all the groups that are joining in, especially with all that is going on in the valley.�

Angela McLellan, 29, and Andrea Price, 24, are holding “The Live Life To The Limit Social� evening up at the Stampede Barn on Saturday, May 10, starting at 7:30 p.m. “We want to celebrate living life to the limit because it’s not something you can always do when living with a
chronic illness,� said Andrea. “Life with Lyme has a Price - in this case it has two� is the slogan on their poster - Angela’s maiden name is Price. Andrea started noticing vision problems while playing volleyball, and was diagnosed with having Lyme disease by a naturopath in October of 2012, after seeing neurologists for quite some time. Andrea said through treatments, she had a lot of ups and downs, but has been getting better. Angela was diagnosed at 21 with a rare neuro-muscular disease, hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. Her neurologist said another issued could be causing the strange sensory symptoms she was having. Through a clinic in Calgary, her bloodwork, sent to IgeNex Labs in the United States, tested positive for Lyme

The sisters appreciate everything valley residents are doing to help. “We’ve had a lot of support from the community - Angela and I are so grateful,� Andrea said.

are WHO you? Bob Moatt Age: 78 Occupation: Retired, but started in the Red Deer Mine in Nacmine in 1952 and then went to the HyGrade Mine in North Drum from 1954-1957. I closed the Murray Collieries in East Coulee, and stuck around for a year to sell off the equipment. I started picking bones, but then became a pony driver. I left mining and went on to be Deputy Fire Commissioner for Alberta. What brought you back to the valley? I would visit once a year and every time I came down the hill, I said, �I’m home.� I came back in 1993. What did you like about mining? I liked the money, and the temperature in the winter. How do you keep busy now? Doing tours at the Atlas Coal Mine, training staff and maintenance. I am also a poker player.
What do you like about doing this? It is a part of my heritage and I would hate to lose it. Drumheller was built on mining. Someone has to keep it up. Over the years what is something that Drumheller has lost? The character. There were robust rowdy crowds. Some were fighting, but most were laughing and having a good time. Now the streets are empty at night. What have we gained? We have gained a great tourism industry. How many times were you kicked out of Fanny’s? Never! I used to drive guys down there, they would save a taxi fare, and have more to spend. She liked me, I used to drink her personal scotch, I wouldn’t drink her rot gut rye though. Final words of wisdom? Get a trade.

There is a full schedule of events for the area’s May Day Miners’ Festival to honour those who went underground to mine the area’s coal. The 4th Annual event remembering the valley’s mining history is a group effort between a number of different organizations in town. Events for the weekend start off Friday night with East Coulee Springfest at three East Coulee locations - the Hotel,
School Museum, and Community Hall. “May Day historically was something that was very important to the coal mining families, especially back in the coal mining boom in the 20s and 30s,” explains Atlas Coal Mine Interim Manager Jay Russell. He said the traditional May Day was more serious, with thousands of people marching in the parade to support the miners. “We wanted to bring May Day back, but in Drumheller style. It is
a family friendly event and an opportunity for our mine families to take part.” The Atlas is hosting a reception at the Miners’ Memorial this year on Sunday afternoon at 1:30, with light refreshments. The Rosebud Men’s Choir will be performing at the memorial. Jen Balderston, Visitor Services Manager of Atlas Coal Mine said it’s important Drumheller celebrates its coal mining heritage. “...We’re carrying the history forward to say that not only is the history not dead in the valley, but that we remember their cause and we are just as excited about it as they are.” “I think it’s just important to remind the mine families as well as the local families that that’s an important part of our
past.” “We want to keep that alive in the future.” Balderston said there was a great turnout to the memorial last year, and they’ve had quite a few mining families, involving all generations, confirm their attendance. The event wraps up with Kjel Erickson in concert at the Badlands Community Facility. Five young ladies will be guest performers at the concert, practicing their musical numbers for the provincial competition in Edmonton in May. Mother’s Day Roses are often hard to come by and quite costly around Mother’s day. Here is a way to treat a special person that you admire on Mother’s day. Strawberry roses are quite simple to make. All it takes is a sharp knife and some imagination! I arranged mine in a round oasis, but you can also make them look like a bouquet with long wire stems. For embellishment, you can use silk leaves and baby’s breath, pearls, etc. OR use fresh mint or basil for the leaves. To make the “roses”, hold the strawberry by the stem. Begin making slits along the bottom edge, usually
about 4 will fit. Don’t cut right through to the stem. Now make another row the same way and continue to the top of the strawberry. I slit the top piece about 1/4 inch down. Use the knife to pull the cuts away from the centre. You can serve this with some chocolate sauce to dip them in. I used a salted caramel dark chocolate blend with mine. I’m sure the recipient will enjoy this special bouquet as much as you will enjoy creating it!

There will be a free shuttle bus to take festival goers from Drumheller out to the East Coulee Springfest and back. The Dekeysers are providing a 20 passenger bus to shuttle Springfest attendees. The bus can be recognized by its lettering, “Dinosaur RV Park Shuttle & Tour Bus”. Pick up and drop off in Drumheller is at the Quality Inn and the Heartwood Inn. The East Coulee bus stop is located at the Community Hall. On Friday night, the bus leaves Drumheller at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., returning at 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. On Saturday. the bus runs on the half hour starting at 11:30 a.m. out to East Coulee, and on the hour back to Drumheller. The bus will be available until after midnight on Saturday. East Coulee Springfest runs Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3. The annual fundraiser for the East Coulee School Museum has forty-plus groups performing among four stages this year.

Area residents wanting to be a part of local events without the lengthy commitment could ďŹ nd their match volunteering for this year’s DinoFest. A volunteer for DinoFest from June 13 through June 15 could put in a short shift and still be home in time to update Facebook before dinner. Angela Keibel of the Drumheller Festival Society said volunteer shifts are kept to a four hour block. “We keep the volunteer shifts short so it’s not onerous for the volunteers, and they can enjoy the DinoFest and have fun.â€?
