Your guide to tourism in the valley

2-year-old Ryan Engler, son of Sara and Gary Engler and 1 1/2-year-old Madelyn Bladen, daughter of Lindsey and Mike Bladen, ventured out after this week’s rain in their new shiny rubber boots to find a few puddles to splash in Wednesday afternoon. Tonnes of waste and old technology carted away in Drumheller’s 2014 Spring Cleanup Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Old technology got the old heave-ho during Drumheller’s recent Spring Cleanup. From May 5 to May 16, Town crews collected 185 computers, 279 televisions and 90 microwaves for disposal. That’s 85 more computers than residents disposed of last year, and a few units over last year’s numbers each for microwaves and televisions. Drumhellerites had a lot of materials stashed away at their homes - 269.47 metric tonnes of household materials were hauled away by the Town. The household total also includes wood and compost. Tammy Nygaard, Operations Manager for the Drumheller & District Solid Waste Management Assocation, said the total collected for household in Drumheller during Spring Cleanup is the equivalent of one full year’s garbage in a smaller community with a population of 270 people. That equates to about 135 half ton trucks. Nygaard notes that’s a decrease in last year’s total of 283.37 metric tonnes, or 4.9 per cent.

The Town of Drumheller and the Drumheller & District Waste Management Association were kept busy with the 2014 Spring Clean-

There was a sharp spike in propane tanks collected over last year - 2014 saw 237 tanks collected, compared to 2013’s 159. This year the town also collected 404 tires, 1,020 paint cans, 89 appliances containing freon, 43 batteries, and 40 metric tonnes of metal only. Manhours spent by crews on the spring

cleanup work out to 864 regular hours, and 107 hours in overtime. Nygaard identified problems with this year’s cleanup as a lack of public sorting and separating their items, those rummaging through the materials making a mess of the pre-sorted piles, and unmanageable piles of trees.

CRIME Keith Doner sentenced

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller man who has a drug record dating back to the 1970s was sentenced to three more years in a penitentiary after pleading guilty in provincial court. Keith Roland Doner, 56, appeared in provincial court in Drumheller. He was charged with trafficking, possession for the purposes of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. He pleaded guilty to the possession for the purposes of trafficking charge. The court heard that in June of last year police had received intelligence that Doner had been dealing drugs from a home on Newcastle Trail. RCMP put the home under surveillance. In the early morning hours of June 25, a female known user was stopped by police upon exiting the home and admitted she had purchased cocaine. Police obtained a search warrant and it was executed, and in Doner’s room at the home, they seized 19.6 grams of crack cocaine as well as drug paraphernalia and cash. There was also a list of known users in the community. Doner was a serving federal inmate doing time

for a similar charge and was on statutory release. His parole was revoked and he was returned to the Drumheller Institution. Federal Prosecutor Colin Kloot argued for a sentence in the range of 5 years. These were very similar charges to Doner’s most recent convictions for which he was sentenced to four and half years and Kloot argued that general deterrence and denunciation are of great importance. He also said the Step Principal, where the sentenced should continue to be increased to reinforce deterrence applies in this case. Defense for Doner, Andrea Urquhart, told the court mitigating circumstances included an early guilty plea and that Doner himself was a user and it was not a venture solely motivated by profit. She also argued that the principle of totality, looking at the entire sentence Doner could be facing was also a factor to considered. Judge Shriar used five years as a starting point for handing down her sentence and gave Doner a year reduction for the early guilty plea as well as a year reduction to reflect totality, leaving a sentence of three years. The drugs and drug paraphernalia that were seized were forfeited, however money seized upon arrest was given back to Doner.

Police warn of suspicious activity Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A gold jewellery scam that has been making the round in Alberta communities appears to have been observed in Drumheller. The police report that a resident was in his front yard cutting the grass on May 18 when he observed two men of East Asian descent driving a rental vehicle. The two men asked the resident if he was interested in purchasing gold jewellery that was located in the car. The man asked the pair if they had a business license, and the two men sped away. Drumheller RCMP said in this case the vehicle in question was a 2014 white Dodge car. There was a report out of Hanna just days previously, which described similar circumstances. Police ask if anyone has observed similar suspicious behavior, or have encountered people matching this description, call the RCMP at 403-823-7590.

Marina Flater, Guy Latour, and Cathy Kuntz presented BCF’s 2014 Marketing Plan to Mayor and Town Council. Cathy Kuntz worked through the presentation, which included eight key areas the facility is focusing on this year. • Research, which includes identifying and evaluating existing markets. • Target Markets, which includes identifying three or four target markets to focus on for the year. Two identified are weddings and conferences. Branding and Messaging which can be achieved by focusing on BCF’s organizational priorities of safety, customer service, cleanliness and efficiency. Currently working on digital and print ads, and BCF is now featured on the Badlands Adventure Website which is run by Canalta, and a business brochure has been created. Evaluation - to date, BCF notes the majority of feed-

back they’ve received has been positive. Marina Flater read positive feedback staff has received from a number of customers. Guy Latour presented current and previous years’ sales figures for the facility. With $83,865 worth of business currently booked, he notes the facility is already at 63 per cent of the 2013 figure of $101,097. During question and answer with Council after the presentation, the figure of 319 bookings was broken down to 178 paid bookings, 95 non-billable bookings (such as community groups), and 46 internal bookings (Town of Drumheller, Council committees.) Latour said BCF has done some research and found conferences to bid on, as well as being able to find information based on different community members’ knowledge, which can also help the facility get a foot in the door for hosting future events.

of Drumheller. What did you enjoy most about the museum? Juergen: the kind of presentation, it’s not only bones on the wall, it’s all the surroundings. Elke: I agree, and it’s also the order you walk through the displays, and I like the Cretaceous Garden. If we visited Germany, what would you suggest we see? Juergen: Munich-downtown & surrounding area is very nice. Elke: Heidelberg-there is a very old & very famous castle, and the landscape is different than North America (very small compared to here), and the river Rhine.

Throughout summertime, The Weekender will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Brent partially restored the car himself, which has a beautiful all-original interior except for the carpeting. Brent said the car has the origi-

Kevin Sorenson Reports Kevin Sorenson M.P. Crowfoot Constituency

Ottawa - The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, is pleased to announce that the Harper Government is now seeking applications for projects that will help seniors continue to make a difference in their communities through the New Hori-

CLASSIFIEDS

zons for Seniors Program (NHSP). “These communitybased projects help empower seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences with others and support communities by increasing their capacity to address local issues,” said Sorenson. “I encourage seniors groups and organizations throughout our Crowfoot riding to apply. Our local seniors know best what projects would improve and enhance local servic-

es and facilities.” The call for proposals will close on Friday, July 4, 2014. Organizations may receive up to $25,000 in grant funding. Projects must address one or more of the program’s five objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social participation and capital assistance. “I have always appreciated being able to work with all the communities in our riding to qualify,” said Sorenson. “By in-

vesting through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, our Government is working to ensure that seniors maintain a good quality of life and continue to be active members of our communities.” For more information and application forms on the NHSP, visit: http:// www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/seniors/funding/community/index.shtml. WHITE SHELDON CHARLES JANUARY 03, 1986 - MAY 26, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved son; Sheldon Charles White. Sheldon was born January 03, 1986 in Drumheller, Alberta and passed away May 26, 2014 in Red Deer, Alberta at the age of 28 years. Sheldon was passionate about numerous things in life. His younger years were spent growing up in Morrin, AB where he enjoyed playing hockey year round (street or ice). He was known for his “cat like” skills tending net for his team. He was an awesome goalie. Some of Sheldon’s other passions in life included his love of music from the time he was a very young boy. Sheldon also loved the outdoors. He loved camping at the Morrin Bridge with his family but his favourite vacation spot was Penticton, BC where he loved to float down the canal time and time again. Sheldon’s dream in life was to grow up and be just like his dad; working in the oil patch on the drilling rigs, which he did. Sheldon shared with his mother a passion and love for Alberta’s majestic mountains and they enjoyed numerous hiking trips to Banff National Park. Sheldon had a heart larger than life itself. He was a kind and gentle soul who thought the world of his family and friends and he loved to make them laugh. Sheldon adored and cherished his sister and best friend Amanda, as well as his two nieces; Paige and Claire. Sheldon leaves behind his loving parents; Darrell White and Anna-Marie White (Raisbeck), his sister Amanda and brother in-law Reid (Swain), his nieces Paige and Claire Swain, Grandmother Julie White (Jackman), Grandfather Grant Raisbeck, Grandmother and step-Grandfather Mary and Don Jackson, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sheldon was preceded in death by his Great-Grandmother Mary Ellen White (2003), Great Grandmother Florence Matchett, Grandfather Melville Charles White (1993), his cousins Justin Laverne Bremer (1997) and Shane Robert Grant Raisbeck (2009). Services for Sheldon will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Grace Lutheran Church in Drumheller, Alberta with Pastor Boehm officiating. A “private” family interment will follow immediately at the Morrin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to STARS FOUNDATION, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Box 570, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 9Z9 . Courtney Winters Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. 22c

Pie and Picnic Season Picnics are always something to look forward to in the summertime. You have to hit it just right to miss the mosquitoes but have sunshine and dry ground to sit on! This pie is perfect to take along to a picnic, but it is also just fine for dessert any day of the week. It is so simple to prepare and also has but five ingredients! 14054KA0 14034KA1

Coconut Lemon Cream Cheese Pie 1 block of cream cheese, softened 1 can of coconut milk, chilled 1 jar of lemon curd 1 cup of coconut 1 baked pie crust (or ready-made graham or shortbread crust) Drain the liquid from the solid in the can of coconut milk. Beat the solid until fluffy. (save the liquid for another purpose). Stir into the cream cheese. Spread mixture into the pie crust. Smooth the lemon curd onto the cream cheese base. Top with the coconut. You can also toast the coconut first if you like. *note- the colder your coconut milk, bowl and beaters, the better it will whip up.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

WORKS Rare coin comes home

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

An interesting coin, used exclusively in Drumheller took a long road back to the valley. inSide Drumheller received an e-mail from Vera Smith, a 91-year old woman in Mechanicsville VA. She had found an article online about the historic buildings on Drumheller, in particular the Elks Lodge. Why this piqued her curiosity was because she had a rare coin. On the obverse it has an image of a Tyrannosaurus Rex surrounded by hills. Across the top it says “The Dinosaur Valley,” and on the bottom it says “Drumheller, Alberta.” On the reverse, the top states “A Prehistoric Past, A Golden Future.” Spelled out on the coin was that is was worth 50 cents in trade at any cooperating business in the Drumheller district, or redeemable at face value at the BPO Elks #54 until December 31, 1963. She told inSide Drumheller she found it in a collection of coins, along with some other rare finds including a token from the 1962 American Space Age Fair in Seattle from 1962. Vera was born in Washington State. She left in 1934 and returned in 1966. She lived there until 1980, and still has family in the area. She figures it was when she was living in Washington that she acquired the coin. Both she and her husband, who has since passed away, were Elks members in Florida and Washington. She mailed the coin to inSide Drumheller. “You can decide what to do with it … if the lodge is still active, they may want it as a part of history,” she writes. inSide Drumheller began inquiring with local members of the Elks as to the origin of the coin, but the Elks contacted were not members in the valley at the time, or only had vague recollections of it. That was until inSide Drumheller spoke with Barney Popovich. He is a lifetime member and recently received his 55year membership pin. “I remember them be-

ing passed around,” said Popovich. “I might even have one myself.” In fact, he dug a similar coin out from his collection, but it was from the 1970’s and featured a different sponsoring service club. He said he doesn’t recall any members traveling to Washington, but said it is entirely possible a member from Washington could have picked one up in their travels. He recalls this is was a fundraising endeavour by the club in which they produced a set number of coins. Residents could purchase the coins and use them as tender at participating businesses. He said the number that people acquired but did not spend it was profit for the club. “I kind of remember another group put them out for one year and then we kind of took them over and produced them for the next year,” said Popovich. “If everyone took one as change

Minor baseball numbers up this year Michele Scott

| inSide Drumheller

More local kids have signed up to play spring baseball this year. “Drumheller Minor Ball is having a great year. We have seen growth in numbers for a lot of our age groups,” notes Laura Cawiezel, a Board Member for the Drumheller Minor Ball

Association. Minor Ball this year has two T-Ball teams, which is generally the 4 and 5 year olds. There are also two coach pitch teams - they are the kids mainly age 6, Cawiezel said, where the coach does the pitching for the kids playing. This year’s HomeTown Realty rookie team for ages 7 and 8 plays out of Midland diamonds,

Cawiezel said the Minor Ball Association really appreciates BP’s help in a pinch. “We found ourselves with too many teams and not enough uniforms, so they were gracious enough to help cover the costs.”

She said there has been no hardball, which is usually youth ages 12 to 16, in Drumheller for two to three years, but she’s optimistic for the future of local minor ball. “We hope it keeps building - it seems to be catching on again in Drum.” Minor ball usually starts practice in May and the season runs until the end of June.

Local lacrosse took a bit of a hit this year, with fewer kids enrolled than previous years. “We’re trying to keep lacrosse in Drumheller. Our numbers are down this year,” said Vice President of Badlands Lacrosse Association Heather Van Dyk. Van Dyk said it could be the fact there’s a number of different spring sports in Drumheller, and possibly a bit of burn-out from winter sports. “After a long hockey season, parents may be tired of driving across the province.” She notes that lacrosse is a very short season, starting in mid-March and running to midJune. Drumheller formed one Pewee lacrosse team this year, for kids born in 2001 and 2002. The Bantam aged kids, those born in 1999 and 2000, went to play with Three Hills as part of Kneehill County. The Drumheller PeeWees play six home games and six away games as part of the Central Alberta Lacrosse League. Dave Powell brought lacrosse to the valley about ten years ago, as he thought it was something that Drumheller needed. His son played lacrosse, and he and his wife ran the local lacrosse association for a number of years. He still helps out with lacrosse, and said he thinks Van Dyk is doing a great job of working on revitalizing lacrosse in Drumheller “Lacrosse is an excellent skill building sport. It is the fastest game on two feet,” said Van Dyk, adding “It is Canada’s national sport.”
