OPINION

inSide STREETERS This weekend, Drumheller will be celebrating its mining heritage, so inSide Drumheller asks: “How do you think you’d fare living in the early mining era of the valley?”

Mary Mate “Quite well. I grew up with no running water. I think we’re a bit spoiled now and settlers were hardy.”

James Turner “It’d be easier, because things would be less complex than they are now.”

Province announces school in Wheatland, Three Hills Submitted | inSide Drumheller

After years of waiting, Golden Hills School Division is very excited to hear the announcement from Premier Redford and Minister of Education, Jeff Johnson of two new area schools. Over the past number of years, the communities in East Wheatland of Hussar, Standard, Rockyford and Gleichen have been experiencing challenges with respect to shifting student populations and quality of school facilities. Last year, in order to provide solutions to this problem, a working group of parents representing each of those four school communities was formed to explore possible solutions for education in the area. After an involved process of collaboration and consultation that extended broadly to all four communities, this Working Group pro-

posed closure of those four community schools and consolidation of all the students in the area to one K-12 centralized school. The GHSD Board of Trustees endorsed this proposal and with this announcement, the province has made the decision to support this area and these four communities with a new consolidated school to support all the students in East Wheatland. “We are very excited with today’s announcements. I can’t say enough about the Working Group and the excellent job they have done in moving this whole situation forward,” said Golden Hills superintendent Bevan Daverne. “Truly, this is a solution that not only is good for students, but is also a model for rural sustainability. For the province to recognize that work and support all the communities in East Wheatland with a consolidated solution

and to fund a state of the art facility where all our East Wheatland staff and students are able to work and learn together is fantastic news for all of us!”

Bevan Daverne… Golden Hills superintendent

The second school announcement impacts the community of Three Hills, where, for the past eight years, the Prairie Christian Academy’s campus has been split between multiple campuses in a variety of leased space. This announcement provides

funding to take the elementary campus and right-size it for the entire K-12 student population. The addition of teaching spaces would include support for high school program courses as well as a new gymnasium suitable for senior high athletics. This announcement will mean that all PCA students and staff will be able to learn and work together in a modern boardowned facility. Board chair, Dave Price, stated, “This is a wonderful announcement today for the community of Three Hills and parents, staff and students at PCA. From an educational and financial perspective – for the culture of that school FOLK

community, this is an excellent solution and we are very appreciative of the support we have received from the province on this situation.” The projects are part of Premier Alison Redford’s promised investment in education infrastructure and the second major capital announcement this week. “We made a commitment to build new schools and we’re doing just that,” said Premier Redford. “This is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about building strong communities so all our kids get the best possible start in life. By investing in schools today, we are investing in ourselves, and our province.”

Town Hall move set for late June Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Although it may not necessarily look like it on the outside, the inside of the Drumheller Civic Centre is buzzing with activity. At the Monday, April 29 meeting of The Committee of the Whole, CAO Ray Romanetz gave Council an update estimate for the building to be complete. Should all go well, the Town could begin moving Town Hall to the Civic Centre by mid June. “As far as a completion date, substantial completion, meaning the building can be turned over to the owner, but with a number of things...needing to be completed...our best guesstimate will be substantially completed by the end of May,” said Romanetz. “We could start moving sometime between June 15 and 30.” Estimates earlier this year had an earlier completion date, but the Town is confident the new timeline is accurate.

The Town of Drumheller is hoping to begin moving in to their new Town Hall location, the old Civic Centre, between June 15 and 30, with an opening for the public in September. The move was decided early

“Although it looks like there is a lot of work to be done, I think everything will be done in a reasonably timely manner,” said Romanetz. The move of Town Hall to the Civic Centre was confirmed early in 2012. The desire was to have the municipal centre of Drumheller in a more central location

and modernized. Given the age and of the current Town Hall, it was felt renovating it was not practical and would have taken considerable work to bring the building up to current building codes. The cost of the renovation is roughly $2 million. Of that, $1.5 million was covered by a

provincial grant. The Civic Centre was gutted last fall and construction has proceeded to create a new space for the heart of the Town’s governance. In addition to moving in, Council is considering an opening for the public in September.

May Day concert highlights our talent Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

This weekend, May Day festivities will be punctuated with some young, local talent who have made their way on the stage of the Drumheller Music Festival. The Drumheller and District Music Festival Association is hosting a concert at the Badlands Community Facility on Sunday, May 5. The concert features Kjel Erickson, who, as a youngster, competed at the Music Festival. Other performers include Chelsea Murphy, as well as sisters Shelby and Rayanne Laycock. All three performed at this year’s Music Festival and were recommended

to compete at provincial festivals. He says the Music Festival shows there is great talent in Drumheller. “There are a lot of young people in the valley who are good at what they do,” said Erickson, adding that funds from the show will be shared between the performers and Drumheller and District Music Festival. Erickson, an accomplished operatic singer, is studying music and Visual Arts at the University of Lethbridge, where he continues to sing. He is looking forward to the show. The concert is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at the Badlands Community Facility.

Kjel Erickson, as well as Chelsea Murphy, and Shelby and Rayanne Laycock will be performing at the Badlands Community Facility on Sunday, May 5 to close out May Day weekend. submitted

Aulenback was chosen at random from members who took the time to fill out the BCF’s membership survey. The survey was also a big win for the BCF. The survey showed a 92 per cent customer satisfaction rate. To improve, the BCF will give staff further training on fitness equipment, have staff circulate in the fitness area more and interact with guests, develop programs in the fall, and hold an increased hours of operation pilot in the fall. inSide photo by Michael James

Lori’s Nacho Wings

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with some delicious Mexican foods!

Use an amount of wings according to the number of people you plan to serve this to. (remove the tips and divide if using whole wings)

Here is a dish I concocted while trying to blend two of my favorite foods into one. I served it to a large crowd and it was a hit, so I will share it. This is a fun, fattening recipe - but if you make it once a year you can justify it! (you can lighten it up using chicken breast strips and light cheese, etc.)

Let us assist you in finding the perfect window treatments for your office or home. We offer full consultation, design and installation services to ensure professional results every time.

Dip them in melted butter – I discovered this to be a good way to get the coating to stick well. Then roll in crushed nacho chips. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes to an hour - or until they are done. (there is nothing worse than biting into a pink chicken wing, so be sure to test the doneness). Spread a layer of wings on the bottom of a baking dish (again the size will depend on the number of people).

Bev’s Valances Beverley Plett 403.443.5192

Top with grated cheese (I used the Mexican blend with jalapeno bits), some salsa and chopped green onion or chilis. Then add another layer of wings, cheese, onion, salsa and jalapenos. Bake at 350 until everything is melted nicely - about 15 minutes. Serve with guacamole, sour cream and more salsa – just as you would a plate of loaded nachos. 18cd

Hope Clinic Presents: How to shop for a healthy diet!

Documentary film “Ladies of the Saturday Night” and photo documentary book “Coal In the Valley.” Part of the May Day Miners' Festival Events in partnership with the Atlas Coal Mine. 18+ only, please, for the film. We have lots of other things to keep the kids entertained in the museum while you're watching the film that’s in a separate room. Ladies of the Saturday Night: Film maker Dana Inkster premieres her intelligent, witty and respectful documentary about the red light ladies of the valley. Coal In the Valley: Photographer/Interviewer Lawrence Chrismas spent thousands of hours interviewing and learning stories from the colourful, poignant and humourous coal miners around Drumheller. Join him to learn some of these stories, see his photo exhibit and purchase his seminal book. Part of what made Alberta strong: coal mining. Part of what keeps Alberta vibrant: recreational pleasures. The two join together in our upcoming May Day Miners' Festival offering at the East Coulee School Museum. For more information call 403.822.3970.

Come join Hope Clinic’s naturopathic doctor, Dr. Keshia Kamphuis, on a tour of your grocery stores, where she will show you how to buy groceries that will help you maintain a healthy diet.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Mother’s Day 2013

Celebrating more than moms on Mother’s Day Every spring individuals celebrate their mothers on Mother's Day. It has evolved from a day to honor mothers to one that recognizes all special women. Therefore, if there is a woman in one's life who isn't a biological mother—but special nonetheless—Mother's Day can be a time to tell her how much she is appreciated. There are many reasons a person may want to honor a woman that is not his or her mother. Perhaps the person's own mother has passed away or is not prominent in this individual's life. Maybe there is a grandmother or aunt with whom one is especially close. There may be a teacher or mentor that has touched the life of a person in a special way. Although Mother's Day is built around giving thanks to Mom, it's certainly acceptable to thank women in addition to dear old Mom. Furthermore, one needn't wait until a specific day in May to honor a notable woman. This can be

done all year long with certain gestures and sentiments. For those who are celebrating all women on Mother's Day, here are some ways to set the day apart. • Create a handmade card with personalized sentiments that reflect the unique relationship with this special woman. This can mean more than a prepurchased card that may not offer the right words. • Find out her interests and spend a day doing entirely what she wants to do. It doesn't necessarily have to take place on Mother's Day. A trip to a museum or a day at the park—whatever it may be—can be a nice outing. • Treat her to a special dinner. Ask about favorite foods and create a meal at home. If dining out is a must, choose a day other than Mother's Day to avoid the crowds and have intimate moments with just the two of you, especially if you are also honoring your own mother on Mother's

Day. • Find something you both enjoy and then go and do that. Maybe you met up due to a hobby or interest. Remember the first day you met and reminisce by heading to that place for a celebration. • Have an extended family fiesta. Host a Mother's Day party at home

and single out all the special women in attendance. Serve cocktails and enjoy the time spent together. Mother's Day is a special time of the year to honor not only a person's mom but also any other notable woman in his or her life. The holiday can be customized any way a person sees fit.

CRIME

Willful blindness invoked in traďŹƒcking trials

Michael James | inSide Drumheller

A new defence is gaining popularity among the inmates of the Drumheller Institution, forcing prosecutors to jump through one more hoop to convict those charged with smuggling drugs into the penitentiary. Defendants charged with attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison, have claimed they were under the impression the contraband they were attempting to bring in was tobacco. The “tobacco defense,â€? as it is becoming known, has had some success so far. Federal Crown prosecutor Colin Kloot sees it as a growing issue. “I think it’s problematic. We’ve just had two trials where the tobacco defense arose,â€? said Kloot. “In the ďŹ rst case, the inmate raised the defence that he had been told to pick up the package and that it was tobacco. He got o because he raised a reasonable doubt, notwithstanding we said he was willfully blind.â€? On April 11, 2010, Ashley Yardley retrieved a package on the Institution perimeter. He was immediately caught and claimed he was unaware the package contained drugs. A witness for the defense, a fellow inmate, testiďŹ ed he told the defendant the package contained tobacco. Yardley was aquitted. The inmate who asked Yardley to retrieve the packaged was charged and subsequently found guilty. In the second case, in which the charged inmate was acquitted on April 12, Donald Holden was alleged to have attempted to bring in two packages containing cannabis resin after returning from a meeting in town.

Upon arriving at the Institution, he was informed he would be searched. Afterwards, two sta members saw him throw two packages on the roof of the Warden’s oďŹƒce. Packages were retrieved by sta on the grounds near the oďŹƒce. “He testiďŹ ed he was told he was only picking up tobacco and that he had only one package and a Bic lighter,â€? said Kloot. “He had the person who told him to get

the package testify, who said, as far as he knew it was just tobacco. That’s just ridiculous. No one asks for tobacco and gets drugs instead.â€? Judge Judith Shriar, who presided over the trial, felt there was sufďŹ cient doubt if Holden was in possession of the drugs in question, due to the inconsistencies between the sta members’ reports of where the objects landed and where they were found. In February of last

year, Justin Neuman was found not guilty of smuggling drugs into the Institution using the tobacco defense. Tobacco is prohibited in the Institution, but not an illegal substance outside. “Because tobacco is contraband there, but not an illegal substance, they can’t be charged externally for having it, said Kloot. The defense adds another step for prosecutors and Kloot expects

to see more inmates charged with attempting to smuggle drugs use the tobacco defense, given the success rate of it so far. “We then have to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, they knew, ought to have known, or

are absolutely lying. It adds a new dimension to what we have to prove. Word goes around the pen very quickly. The ďŹ rst guy was successful and so was the second,â€? said Kloot. “I’m expecting a lot more of this to come forward.â€?

Badlands Lacrosse gets boost from Calgary Roughnecks

DRUMHELLER

KING OF THE BADLANDS

Badlands Lacrosse is getting a helping hand from the Calgary Roughnecks. On Saturday, $5 from every ticket sale, using a special code, will be donated to Badlands Lacrosse. “We’re getting $5 from the (Calgary) Roughnecks per ticket that’s purchased. The money will go towards promoting lacrosse in the area next season. We’re hoping to bring the Roughnecks to schools and have them do some demonstrations for the kids,” said Brandi Belliveau, vice president of Badlands Lacrosse. The game starts at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Saddledome. Lacrosse season has been going steady for three weeks already. The Midget Raptors are looking for their first win of the season on Saturday when they take on the Innisfail Phantoms in the Drumheller Memorial Arena at 7 p.m. The Midget Raptors are heading into the game with a three game losing streak, being bested in their last outing 8-2 by the Red Deer Chiefs. The Pee Wee Raptors are also looking to break into the win column this weekend. On Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m., the Pee Wee’s will take on the Olds Stingers in the Drumheller Arena. “We’ve been having a tough go of it so far, but we have been improving. We had a lot of new kids this year. The

most important things we work on every practice are shooting, passing, catching, and positioning,” said Ren Dumaine, head coach of the Pee Wee Raptors. The Pee Wee’s were defeated 10-3 by the Sylvan Lake Buccaneers two weeks ago. The Novice Raptors have had a busy schedule so far, but are still looking for their first win of the season on Saturday when they host the Blackfalds Warriors at 4 p.m. in the Drumheller Arena. The Tykes are looking for some help to get their season off the ground. ““They’re having fun and learning, but we’re in desperate need of players. We only have seven kids and we need 12 to keep our team this year. We’re looking for kids to register late. It’s a requirement of the league that you have to have a minimum of 12 players,” said Dan Belliveau, head coach of the Tykes. Should the team not have 12 players soon, they will have to cancel their season. If that happens, they will still play as much as possible outside of the league. “We’ll continue to practice and pick up games with whoever we can, wherever we can,” said Belliveau. The Mini-Tykes are set to start their season this weekend when they take on the Red Deer Chiefs at the Drumheller Arena at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
