Historic building know-how sought for open house Tuesday Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Those interested in the postdinosaur history of Drumheller will have an opportunity to suggest significant buildings and to assist the Heritage Steering Committee in their quest to compile a list of historical buildings. An open house will be held on Tuesday, May 10 on the second level of the Civic Centre at 7:00 p.m. It’ll allow those in Drumheller interested in heritage properties to contribute to the inventory of buildings, which would eventually allow these buildings to seek heritage status from the town. Municipal designations of historic significance on properties make them eligible for grant funding from the province. “We’ll be able to talk to people with properties of interest, or ones they know about, and give them information about the process of the inventory,” said the project’s town resource and coordinator for the project, Paul Salvatore. Buildings that earn a place in the estimated 30 spots of heritage buildings could qualify for funding for preservation. After 30 historic buildings have been identified by the committee, they will request permission to hire a professional consultant to go through the buildings and as-

A man who was discovered unconscious on a boulevard in Nacmine early Monday morning with severe injuries to his head and breathing difficulties was taken off life support Wednesday. At about 8 p.m. Wednesday, he passed away. Earlier in the day, the man accused of aggravated assault following the discovery of Neil Austin McMaster, 55, was released on $1,000 bail. Calvin Wade Laughlin, 49, of Drumheller made an ap-

pearance in provincial court in Drumheller on Wednesday, May 4 for a show cause hearing to speak to his release. Duty council represented him. As it is an indictable offence, Laughlin has the choice to be tried in provincial court or in Court of Queen’s Bench, by either a judge alone or by a judge and jury. Laughlin reserved his election. About six acquaintances of Laughlin were in the court room. Judge Grieve released Laughlin on $1,000 bail, which one supporter said they would

CORRECTION In the Friday, April 29, 2011 edition of inSide Drumheller, in the article “Sorenson, Parker, Turner show for federal political forum on Tuesday”, it was incorrectly reported that John C. Turner’s reason for mistrusting the government and running in the election was because a “former lady friend” was “sexually assaulted by a Northern Ireland republic terrorist” and he did not receive any support from the government. She was physically assaulted, not sexually assaulted. We apologize for the inaccurate reporting.

After McMaster, 55, was discovered early Monday morning, he was taken to Calgary via STARS Air Ambulance and he was put on life support. Police say an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Upon the cause of death being determined, the investigation will be reviewed.

Tyrrell goes batty against mosquitoes Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

The Tyrrell museum will be recruiting bats to combat the annual spring plague of freshly hatched mosquitoes after bat houses were donated to the museum for their Green Team initiative. Donating houses to the Atlas Coal Mine, Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club, Dinosaur Provincial Park, and one to keep for themselves, the Tyrrell hopes bats will take up residence in the skinny wooden structures to provide a chemical free solution for dealing with the pesky problem. “Spraying for adult mosquitoes or poisoning the larvae seems like an unattractive idea,” said Mike Dooley, public relations coordinator at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. “The trick is to put these houses out in places that are appropriate for them to live, and they will eventually move into them.” The valley is home to two species, the little brown bat and big brown bat, with plans to attract the little kind to the houses. These bats can eat up to 5003,000 insects a night.

The opportunity to control mosquitoes through use of natural predators will reduce the risk to the public of West Nile Virus, which is one major benefit to this project. “We thought it would be an interesting way to reduce the pesticides we use,” said Dooley, adding they hope it will provide a more enjoyable experience for those using the trail systems around the museum. The Atlas Coal Mine is accustomed to having swarms of mosquitoes coming from the wet ground around the historic site, and with a lot of wildlife around the site, executive director Linda Digby said it was a relief to have this option. Dooley said he will be donating the fifth bat house to the Town of Drumheller as the town prepares to use its last stockpile of pesticide which has now been discontinued. The chemical in use now is far more effective than the greener options they will have to choose from next year. “We would rather not use chemical if at all possible,” said Director of Infrastructure Allan Kendrick, saying the town has looked into using bat houses

The Tyrrell Museum’s Green Team initiative donated bat houses to the Atlas Coal Mine, Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club, Dinosaur Provincial Park, and the town as a means of controlling the expected high amount of mosquitoes this spring.

Two East Coulee non-profit organizations will also receive funds from the Alberta government’s Community Spirit Donation Grant Program this May. believe what we do is worthwhile and get that a lot of what we do has no price tag on it,” said Atlas Coal Mine executive director Linda Digby. Dinosaur Valley Heritage Society president Brent Noland said, “I love the name of this grant: ‘Community Spirit’. ager Keith Russell said there is more standing water this year than average years, saying the valley can expect more mosquitoes as a result. “We’ve detected some larvae already in the valley, so we’re in the midst of applying our aerial application,” said Russell. “We still have an adequate supply which will carry us through this year, depending on how bad they are, and hopefully carry us

The society will use the funds in the revitalization of the East Coulee School Museum. The Community Spirit Donation Grant Program matches donations made by Albertans. These East Coulee organizations received word of the program’s funding at the same time as the 12 other non-profits in Drumheller.

Cinco de Mayo Fare I thought I would share a recipe in the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, which happened to be yesterday. This is a nice way to use up some leftover chicken, too. I personally do not care for cilantro. It seems to be something people either love or hate - no in-between. The soup is scrumptious with or without it.

1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 cups cubed cooked chicken breast 1/2 cup fat-free sour cream 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro (optional) In a Dutch oven, saute onion in oil until tender. Add garlic; cook

1 minute longer. Add the broth, beans, tomatoes, corn, chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, cumin and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Stir in chicken; heat through. Garnish with sour cream; sprinkle with cilantro, if desired.

Her book Crow’s Black Joy ends with a short poem about Drumheller and a longer story-poem about the Badlands. Day, it was greatly appreciated! We will be having a community clean up May 7, 2011 at 12:00. We could use everyone’s help to get ready for the busy spring and summer ahead. The new camp kitchen is complete and survived the flood! A couple weekends ago all of us in Wayne were surprised to see a 20 foot speed boat on the river; I guess it was one of those rare times there was enough water. They had tried to go a few days prior when the river was still flooding but they couldn’t fit the boat under the bridges! Although they didn’t show it they did end up buying a few items from Fred. The Disk Golf Tournament will be August 5-7, 2011. It’s always fun to see those guys scaling the hills, come out and watch! I’ve amassed a huge collection of dinosaur bones and prehistoric shark teeth from walking in the hills with my two dogs. What’s playing on your iPod? Blues, soul music, and classic rock. If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Some kind of potato. What’s your theme song? Here Comes the Sun. Favourite sports team? It’d have to be soccer, because I’m from England. Hull City Football Club. What’s the one piece of technology you couldn’t live without? Laptop. Dream car? My Volkswagon VR6. Dream job? Well boys, you protested how strongly you didn’t want an election, but you forced one on us anyway. How do you like it? Stephen Harper was called to war by Jack Layton, Michael Ignatieff and Gilles Duceppe. It was a war he did not want, but the opposition demanded it, because they said that the House no longer had confidence in the government. Perhaps the three opposition leaders should first have consulted with the electorate, because apparently Canadians had not lost confidence in the government. In fact, Canadians felt so confident that they gave Stephen Harper a battle axe, which he used to lay waste to his opposition, and humble their respective leaders. Canadians gave the Conservatives something they have not had since the days of Brian Mulroney, a majority government. Oh joy, oh joy. The three opposition leaders gave us an election we did not want or need. When all the ballot boxes were emptied, and all the ballots counted, the three all got exactly what they deserved. Michael Ignatieff lost his seat, and his party has been reduced from 77 seats to just 34. Gilles Duceppe suffered the same fate, with the Bloc Quebecios reduced to a puny 4 seats, making it a virtual non entity. But the big loser of the night had to be Jack Layton, who not only re-took his seat, but increased his parties seat total to 102. So why do I say Layton is a loser? Because when the election was called, the NDP had 34 seats. Subtract that from 102 and you get 68. At the same time, the bloc held 48 seats in Quebec and the Liberals 15. Jack didn’t really change anything, or win anything in any other province, he merely inherited Quebec from Duceppe and Ignatieff. In doing so, he and his party become the Official Opposition. He has lost his power to influence policy because he no longer holds the balance of power, he can be ignored by the government, and defeated on every vote. He won nothing, he merely linked himself and his party so tightly to Quebec that he may ultimately divide what he has created. There was much made of Jack Layton and the surge of the NDP. Why so much was made of it I’m not sure, because there is nothing to it. All Layton and his party have done is take over what the Bloc lost in Quebec. Prior to the election the NDP held 34 seats. After the election, excluding Quebec they would have had 41 seats. That means that the much vaunted surge in popularity, so trumpeted by the media, resulted in a increase of 7 seats, 5 of which were picked up in Ontario! A national surge? I hardly think so, hell they lost 2 seats in Manitoba. Mr. Layton’s 100 plus seats come courtesy of the Bloc Quebecois and the Liberals in Quebec, who between them donated 54 seats to the NDP, the other four coming from the Conservatives. Mr. Layton has tied himself very securely to Quebec, and most of the rope I believe, he will find, is around his neck. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, at least that’s what I hear.

Theory. What would you do with $1,000,000? Pay off all my debt, spread it around, and open a bigger, permanent restaurant. If you had a time machine, where would you travel to? Fifty years in the future. I’m into physics and astrology, so I’d like to see where we have come in that time. We’re on the brink of many things now.

Drumheller elementary school aged children will now have the chance to learn the basics of golf, thanks to the National Golf in Schools program. Educational sets of golf equipment, aimed at Grades 2-5 students were distributed to Greentree School and St. Anthony’s School Thursday morning. The kits include all kinds of golf supplies, from clubs to balls and targets, as well as teacher resources, designed with learning in mind. “This is part of our mandate to bring golf to the community,” said Tom Zariski, director for the Alberta Golf Association and president of the Drumheller Community Golf Association. “Virtually every elementary student in Drumheller will have an introduction to golf.” The kits are provided by the Royal Canadian Golf Association, and distributed through the provincial associations. Zariski said the Drumheller Community Golf Association applied to the Drumheller Family Fund, administered by the Royal Tyrrell Museum Cooperating Society for the kits, and the society came through with the funding. Each kit is worth about $500.
